If I may ask, what inspired you to make your world and story for Lornwood? was it a random idea and you build something on it over time, or something else? I'm really curious since many people have so different kinds of processes of creating something like a fantasy world.
In a broad sense my story creation process is adhd and overthinking.
Basically my brain has a lot of restless energy and it likes to bat ideas around sort of like a cat with a yarn ball; I see ideas or concepts and I roll them around in my head.
The story that became Lornwood was built heavily around Aeon, first as a character, and they were not necessarily created unique but out of something that affects a lot of my ideas: I really like "final boss" type characters, grand weird mystical beings or such, and it stands out to me that a lot of the deathless fantasy dark overlords of fiction exist almost entirely out of context with other characters. It's often hard to imagine what sort of daily schedule they might keep, if they live somewhere, or if they live at all.
One of my favorite things to do is put character archetypes played more or less straight in roles that they would normally have nothing to do with, also played as straight as I can get them- so, putting the space flea final boss in a protagonist role.
So I guess if there's a kernel that has been with Lorn from the very start, it was a question of, "Well, what makes someone a bad person? How do they become that way? And, what are they supposed to do when they've been that person for long enough and don't want to be?"
Because if you think of someone who, despite absolutely having the power to ruin or end others' lives, lives in the equivalent of a bleak dark room with no real possessions or comforts, there's a certain bereavement to that. And if you start to extrapolate a character just from that idea- it becomes a question of morality. Would we be good people, if we were alone in the dark and the only way that we reached other people was to make a fist and strike it out into the world?
Early Aeon was much more willfully aggressive- an active schemer and destroyer fitting their original inspirations. They were a big monster with no natural human form, who had, over a long period of time, played games and cut deals with various people of different degrees of desperate or angry, and took parts of their petitioners that they coveted, eventually assembling a body that they meant to use to escape into the real world.
It was a lot more of a narrative about laying low a haughty god- the chronic pain of the body thus assembled forced them to rethink everything about how they had before been unable to feel pain at all, and cared little about inflicting it. So early Aeon was a little, for lack of a better term, tropier- straightforward jrpg villain archetype, with one twist (basically living in a sensory deprivation chamber and lacking much ability for cognitive empathy) sent on a redemption arc. There were other gods in the setting, but their reasons for disliking Aeon were basically just because Aeon was a genuinely evil god. The setting overall was much more “rpg fantasy” rather than what it is now, which is more of a gothic fairytale vibe.
Honestly one of the biggest remainders of this time period is Eva’s color palette- she was directly inspired off a final fantasy white mage, so her outfits always prominently featured white with red accents. She was overwhelmingly invented as Aeon’s deuteragonist, who would supply them with medicine and carry her own troubles that led her to deciding somehow despite her mounting anxieties that this was Her Patient and she was going to see them through to the end.
That early story, called Heal, started to unravel I think the more I got acquainted with Aeon and Eva, and the former ended up more the deuteragonist to Eva than the other way around; not because their issues are less compelling but because the more their situation came together for me, the more it seemed intuitive that Aeon wasn’t really making progress on their issues- they were stuck, while Eva was the one whose presence and influence became the reason things start moving at this particular point. When she’s the whole reason the story happens at the time it does, it made sense to focus on her perspective.
Really, the funniest thing about that was I settled on Aeon‘s animal motif really early on as a shark, with the idea of their fearsome reputation as man-eaters contrasted with the fact that most shark attacks are an earnest accident, the consequence of a nearly blind predator groping in the watery dark with the only ‘hand’ they have to understand the situation- a hand that happens to be full of very sharp teeth.
Now, I feel like the shark as a motif fits current Aeon (trying their best, frustrated and trying to decide if they’re really resigned to being an ‘evil demon’ rather than actually working to be accepted as a god who can bring good to others) way more than it did original Aeon (a certain amount of genuinely malicious and uncurious, didn’t really worry about things until they were forced to). Although it certainly could be that in coming up with the symbol first, I built a language to talk about Aeon and then adjusted my understanding and depiction of the character based on what those symbols were telling me.
The Lorn itself was actually inspired off of Silent Hill- in particular I was thinking of how several Silent Hill games imply that the town is itself particularly antagonistic or angry due to its inextricable tangling with Alessa, and her perspective around her upbringing and torture. It made me wonder how a comparable “species”- a living location that seethes with power and reflects the hearts of those within it- might behave in a truly neutral sense, and that made me think of fairytales and folklore, the kill-or-cure of snake venom. And of course, the role of The Woods in so many stories; particular among them Little Red Riding Hood and her fraught passage into adulthood, the need to contend with darkness and ill-intended strangers to make her way to maturity.
So Lorn coming into the picture as simultaneously a setting and a character itself really was the thing that broke things away from Heal and gave an immediate and significant goal with all of the characters. At all times, they’re boxed in- both by the literal trees and eerie manifestations of the forest, and with the things in their lives it has taken on and embodied. The phrase “Lornwood” was a thing that I came up with offhandedly from a different idea and liked the sound of, but it wasn’t until I could properly anchor it in this story that I could answer what exactly the Lornwood was- the word “lorn” etymologically talks about loss.
And I think that was perhaps an important movement in conceptualization- because “Heal”, while I always intended it as a story to ask questions about what can and can’t be fixed and what it means to want to fix someone in the first place, still nonetheless implies that this is a story about, well, healing- rather than a story about loss, a story about grief, and the necessity of making our bed with the darkness one way or another, healing or not, to be complete human beings.
As far as fiddlier decisions, a lot of those happened sort of incidentally. Syther was originally conceived as a vampire, which in this setting was a thing accidentally Aeon’s fault; the character of Shion has probably changed the most out of the core three; I batted around a lot of different concepts for the gods before settling on the decision that this whole pantheon is one troubled family.
(the earliest concept for what became Sivi was close to an abject villain, which is very funny to me considering her current character incarnation is in some ways the closest thing this entire family has to a Lawful Good)
Really the person who’s changed the least is Eva. She became steadily more deadpan and a bit more fleshed out but for as much as the setting changed around her, her backstory stayed mostly steady. Sometimes you just get an idea that keeps going. I guess this is how she was able to seize the main character slot so easily.
Sorry Aeon. You’re still a protagonist in my heart.

Italian Doomers BRETUS Tell Ghostly Tales on New LP, ‘Magharia’
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Tumblr media
Artwork by DamianaMerante
Hailing from the City of the Two Seas, Italian doomers BRETUS return with a new album of ghost stories. Longtimers know that Bretus and Doomed & Stoned practically grew up together. Though the band has been active since the turn of the century, our first exposure came with their debut full-length 'In Onirica' (2012) and subsequently we formed a friendship with the Catanzaro doomers that continues to this very day. It's hard to believe they're already over two decades old (okay, 20 years young, if you like). And what do they have to show for it? A handful of LPs, an EP, and a split with fellow Italianos Black Capricorn.
If you're as much a fan of vintage horror movies, H.P. Lovecraft lore, mysticism, and the occult as Zagarus (vox), Ghenes (guitar), Janos (bass), and Striges (drums), there's a whole world of story and sound awaiting your deep dive into the Bretus catalog. Adding to their already excellent discography, a fifth album now reveals itself: 'Magharia' (2021).
I won't spoil my interview with the band (see below) if I tell you that the album concerns, shall we say, several tales of the supernatural variety. An ominous gong is struck to the backdrop of monastic chant as Magharia opens in epic fashion "Celebration of Gloom," a song characterized by a chugging proto-trash tempo, trve metal stylings, and Gothic vocals appropriate to it's subject. It's a rather grim account of a certain sacrilegious priest and his daliences with young women of the church. As a preacher's kid, I've seen this kind of thing play out a hundred times and can assure you these sweeping romances between clergy and laity never end well. In this case, it winds up with a ghoulish rite and a victim's vengeance.
"In the sky lightning strikes...wicked laments rise from the ground." Welcome to "Cursed Island." True to the spirit of the lyrics, this track really let's it all hang out, with quasi operatic vocals that occasionally erupt in maniacal laughter (reminding me vintage Reagers-era Saint Vitus, with its lusty swagger). And why not? This is after all about the mystery that surrounds one of the most haunted islands on earth.
Thus far, the record's been sporting a pretty up-beat pulse, so surely you're ready for some good old fashion doom? "Moonchild's Scream" concerns a albino girl accused of being possessed by the devil for her appearance. One day, she disappears in the dungeons of a castle and legend has it that her cries can still be heard every five years during the Summer Solstice. Doesn't get more doom than that, folks!
After a brief interlude ("Necropass"), we arrive at my favorite track of Magharia. "Nuraghe" concerns the spirit of a woman judged and condemned for a crime she was innocent of still roams among the ancient stones. Boy, the ancients sure did have a hang-up with free-spirited, independent women, didn't they? The song itself is possessed by the spirit of Pentagram in its biting guitar work and rhythmic attack. Love the riffage on this one! Some of it could have been played out just a little more for my taste, like the all-too-brief Soundgardenesque motif at the two-minute mark. It returns a minute later, again in brief. C'mon Ghenes, let your inner Kim Thayil loose! Maybe we can convince them to improv at this point with a bitchin' guitar solo at their next festival appearance. Then again, perhaps this fits artistically with the song, which speaks of obscure "grim dancing bats" and a ghost that haunts through swift shadows passing over glimmers of light. Once again, Zagrus expressive song style comes through to distinguish this as a gem of the genre. I shall be revisiting it on my personal playlist often.
"Headless Ghost" strikes graceful Goatsnake groove as the yarn is spun about the restless and tormented soul of an ancient Roman warrior who has risen from his place of rest. All he wants is the skull that was looted from his place of burial. Give it back to him! "No one will be spared tonight," the lyrics warn, as the song shifts down to a dire doom dirge as the night unveils a strange moon and the wanderings of a cursed soul, seeking his head and not more. "He is living again in this hell."
"The Bridge of Damnation" is one of the creepiest of the record, said to be about "a bridge, a young boy, and his three torturers." The mood is quite dark, with esoteric atmosphere, reverberating vocalizations, guitar and bass trading off notes. Oh, and did I mention this tale from the crypt involves death and resurrection, as well? The riffmaking and drumming are absolutely on point, as is the singing -- which by now in the record I'm not only am accustomed to, but have grown to admire. Another keeper!
"Sinful Nun" winds and grinds as Zagarus croons about the inner torment of a Sister who has never gotten over her beloved, who died under such unspeakably tragic circumstances that she decided to consecrate herself to God in celibacy. However, her vows are in vain as she still pines for her long lost lover. The verses are sung to the accompaniment of a galloping tempo, which seems to represent the fevered anguish of a soul forever stricken by grief and the haunted memories of lost love. This is juxtaposed in the chorus by a cursed riff that seems to speak as the Hand of Fate itself. "Farewell to this life," are the Sinful Nun's final words.
At last, we reach the album's namesake and though "Magharia" is entirely instrumental, it would be a mistake to assume you know what it's going to do. Around the four-minute mark, I had to check and make sure I was listening to the same album, as dark synth busted out a metronomic rhythm, leading to a declamatory section of keyboards to accompany the math-like guitar play and an improvisation of almost creepy seventies-sounding prog, which after its playful fit dissipates suddenly in a bluesy collapse.
Bretus have cooked up a remarkable horror soundtrack that, though it speaks of ancient lore, is very much a fitting backdrop to the unreality of our own times. Fitting somewhere on the stylistic spectrum between Candlemass and Paul Chain, Reverend Bizarre and Cardinals Folly, Margharia may be the band's finest effort to date. Certainly, it rewards repeated listens, and will haunt you for many years to come. Look for the record to drop this weekend (pre-order here), with multiple physical formats releasing via The Swamp Records (compact disc), Burning Coffin Records (cassette), and Overdrive Records (vinyl). Until then, you can stream it all, right now, right here!
Give ear...
Magharia by BRETUS
An Interview with Bretus
What is the concept behind the new album and what themes do you explore?
Musically the new record is most "in your face" than the previous album. Also our approach to the recording was different. We rehearsed and arranged together more than before. The result is an album more raw to us. It is a concept album born around different italian old ghost tales. Some of these is supposed to be legend or myth, who knows.
When did you write it? Was it during the pandemic lockdowns?
We had more ideas about new stuff long before the pandemia arrived. We spent this time working on the pre-production of the tracks.
Tumblr media
Can you give us a track-by-track explanation of each song on the album?
For sure!
"Celebration of Gloom" is a strange song because there are many influences in it. Including a solo flute in the middle of the track. However is a very loud and gloomy song.
"Cursed Island" probably is the most rock 'n' roll song of the album. If you know what I mean. Rock in the attitude. Also the first video of the album.
"Moonchild's Scream" is 100% pure Doom with a heavy mid-section.
"Necropass" is like Caronte travelling the damned souls across the Stige River.
"Nuraghe" is a heavy oriented track with a very dark feeling.
"Headless Ghost" has a more stoner trend than the others and in the end there is a psycho riffing.
"The Bridge of Damnation" includes our '80s dark influences into our sound, probably the most haunted track of the album. The story is based upon an old weird story that happened in our native city, Catanzaro.
"Sinful Nun" is like an experiment and neither of us can explain really what it is... ah ah aha! For sure the most heavy track of all.
Finally "Magharia." You cannot believe it but the idea comes from a Who's album, Quadrophenia. Either of us wrote a part of the song. The result is a kind of horror soundtrack.
Magharia by BRETUS
How do you feel that your basic style or approach to song composition has changed since you first started writing songs in the early days?
You already know a lot of things about us, we know you from so long ago! Please don't ask how old we are. (laughs) Basically our approach is the same from the beginning. Of course we listen to a lot of new stuff during these years so every album brings different "colors."
Where are you most looking forward to playing live once pandemic restrictions are eased?
Everywhere! We are angry for live gigs or simply to drink beers with friends.

Question spam! Are all the different types called rooks? Are they only real animals, no dragons or unicorns? What about insects or spiders? You mentioned wounds and the cats having bandages because of 9 lives, are they spirits? Is Jock and Hunk the only two-headed one? Don't feel like you have to answer all this 😛
@zycout THANK YOU FOR BLESSING ME WITH YOUR ICON AGAIN AKDJFA
These are all so wonderful, thank you for asking, it’s really nice to get the thoughts I’ve had out in writing for you guys ;v; 💓
1. Yes!!! Rooks are their species. There are obviously different types of Rooks, but they all are Rooks. So take Doll, he’s not a Cat Rook, nuu he’s just a Rook. There’s no division, they’re just one race.
ALTHOUGHHHHH, Fun Fact: When I started working with Doll himself, I was originally planning on making Rooks only feline based! And not only that, the Rooks would have had their types based off of the type of wound dressings they had! Doll has bandaging on his arm, as well as a tail that resemble Ribbon! So Doll would have been a Ribbon Rook :3 Other types consisted of Button, Zipper, Thread, Velcro, Yarn, Needle, and Fabric Rooks! This concept was dropped only because of design issues, and I really wanted to do more than just one animal species omg 💨
and another Fun Fact!!! Rooks were only called Rooks because they were all supposed to have a black base with a pop of color (Like Doll and Stud’s designs) because a Rook is actually a crow! and crows are black :3 The name kinda stuck, so there you go ✨I was too infatuated with lots of colors to really just keep it the same all throughout /////
Anywayyyy to keep going…
2. Absolutely not! All creatures, including insects, marine and avian animals, prehistoric or fantasy creatures, are bases for a Rooks design if you want it too! I haven’t had the moment to make other body types 💦 but they’re feasible as well :3 Rooks don’t have to be just bipedal creatures, they can look like centaurs, have spider leggies or mermaid tails, however you’d like, just as long as there’s an animal like trait that they’re base off of!
 3. Honestly, I haven’t quite figured that one out, but I’d just put it as Felines being the most mystical of the species. Like they’d be the cryptids of Rook culture, but it’s still something natural?? Doll floats around all he wants and no one bats an eye, its just a societal acceptance, Hunk and Jock have two fucking heads, Looker’s got a few more eyes on his face, no big deal. Totally not cause cats are my favorite ///////
But the nine lives thing stands, feline looking Rooks tend to have the most wounds, these wounds come from past life trauma (the equivilant of the human version where scars and birthmarks are symbols of how you died, yada yada). So Doll was beheaded at one point and that doesn’t phase him pff 💨 Jock probably had his tongue cut out and Hunk got an eyeball plucked. But wounds of course are not limited to felines of course, it’s just the pure AMOUNT sometimes.
BUT!!! Bandaging is limited to felines! The bandaging of a body part would refer to the loss of that body part. Doll’s past life could have had their arm and half if their leg taken off, but Doll still acquired those parts when some other Rook who’s not based feline would not have those parts to begin with.
So kinda going off topic, but I don’t think Rooks ever truly die, they only would when wounds are so extensive that there’s literally no body left to pass on. Then I guess they’d become spirits :3
and finally 4. Nope!!! But!! Polycephaly is a rare thing, it’s not every day you see Rooks who have a few heads on their shoulders, but again, nothing is shamed or made fun of, monsters don’t give a damn about looks and I think that’s wonderful
Oh goshhhhh, that was so much fun writing, I really appreciate you asking me all of those questions, bby, it really helps me document things, I love it 💖 Please ask me any more questions if you’d like, I’m all ears
- Dolly ❤

WIP update for my pastel sweater project:
I am making the Juniper Sweater by Nomad Stitches!!
It is a crochet sweater that is made in 3 pieces, has a lace like feature on the (raglan!) sleeves, and a scalloped hem. It is a paid pattern, so I will do my best to talk about the process without too many details that would spoil the pattern...
Here's some pictures of the sweater from the creator of the pattern!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The pattern calls for DK/3 so I am holding 2 fingering weight yarns that I dyed specially for this project. They are single ply and are working up a really interesting texture so far.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Theres a bunch of increases and decreases in the pattern and I have been struggling a little bit (I'm being overly picky about how/where to work the increases) but I think once it starts really building bulk, it will be easier.
I do LOVE how the colors are working up!! They are being soft and kinda glow-y in a way that I love, but am apparently bad at photographing... but it won't stop me from trying!!

I decided to dye some yarn for a crochet sweater I want to make. This is the single ply super wash wool base I use. It's fingering weight, so I need to hold double for the pattern's DK.
Tumblr media
I did my best to try and plan how I dyed the yarn to work well for holding the two colors. (Because I guess just dyeing 6 of the same color was too boring? Idk) I've never tried to dye for a speciffic project or pattern before, so it was a bit of a challenge.
I had to re-do half of it because I made it too dark. (As in, I grabbed 3 undyed and started over to replace the darker 3 skeins)
I know these look almost the same, and the photos make it even more so... but one is mostly blueish green with some purple and the other is mostly purple with some blue. I promise. Lol
Tumblr media
Caked up there is a more obvious difference, one looking aqua ish and the other purple.
I can't wait to share progress on this project, as they look so pretty together!!!

This was my initial thought for how to dye the Batty colorway, but decided it needed it's own space.
Say hi to Mystic.
It's really difficult to capture this one on camera!
Mystic is a mix of a cool pastel purple, and a cool minty color. It turns this really pleasant grey where they overlap and mix. It's really subtle compared to all the other things I have dyed, and I really find it to fit it's name sake!
I feel like this would make some really pretty garments, or something lacey. I will likely be visiting this color again later, even if only to dye up a sweater's quantity for myself ;)
Currently, I have 10 skeins available on a 100g sock base.

This color is special to me, as it's an attempt to recreate one of the first intentional dyes that I did with my step mom ♡
I messed up some of the technique a bunch, but its still so pretty (and I know what to correct in future batches). So I only have this color on 2 bases, sparkle and single ply, which are both sock weight. The other two bases for this one turned out so different that I had to give them a different name...
This is Neophyte.
In my mind the name is for a novice or apprentice mage of some sort, learning how to magic. I imagine someone new to magic would be likely to put too much into their work, and still miss some spots.

I started working on a dragon!! The reason I bought the book.
I don't do a lot of amigurumi, so it's been kinda challenging, but doable! It's super lumpy so far, but most of it is from mistakes I was too lazy to go back for. Which is better than mistakes I didn't know about or understand how to fix...
I'm really glad I'm starting with a redheart acrylic, it is surprisingly forgiving for how often I've had to frog rows. I'm a bit concerned about how this will come together because of how lumpy it is.
I'm planning on doing the standing pose (picture below from book) and adding wire so it can be posable.

I do sell the yarn I dye! I will try to mention if what I show off is in-stock of not here, but don't be afraid to ask me about it! :3
The shop is up on Ko-Fi, and isnt behind a tip/pay wall, all shop items (so far) are available to anyone. I would love to be able to set up membership tiers and rewards at some point, but that will likely be when I have enough people interested to help me figureout what tiers would be exciting 🙂🙃
Big thanks to anyone who does check it out or send someone to look at it 💜🦇💜
