my new poster for the 30th Anniversary of Myst, available over at the Cyan store (link in the source and the comments)! This imagery has been indelibly inscribed on the inside of my eyelids since I was a kid, so it was an absolute joy bringing it to life in a more official capacity. 📚

MYST
A humble tribute to one of my favorite games of all time. The perspective is...well..horrid, but I did my best to capture all my love for the very first in a long string of games that have fascinated and inspired me since I was six.
It was a perfect excuse to break out my sepia pens too!

Water always seemed like something that would be extremely hard to do, but surprisingly, it really wasn't. At least for a still render like this. No idea how it would look if I tried animating it, but this is literally just a glass shader with the proper refraction, and a wavy bump texture.
I didn't even need to do any displacement on it. It actually made it look worse because it screwed up the refraction, so you couldn't see through it unless you were looking straight down into it.
So yeah. "Decent looking water" became "ocean," which became "islands," which became "some sort of MYST-inspired thing."
I really want to try making a point-and-click game with pre-rendered scenes at some point. It seems like it should be pretty easy to do, so of course I expect it to be painfully difficult in lots of unforeseen ways.

i'm playing return to monkey island. i went through the scrapbook at the beginning because it's been years since i played, and it made me so, so happy see the third, fourth, and fifth games in there, too? like, the kind of happy where you cover your mouth to hide your smile. and with the whole-hearted embrace of elaine and guybrush as a couple feels like a love letter, and dominic armato's voice is a 'hello' from an old friend you never thought you'd meet again, and the mellow marimba of the game's theme made me feel better just to hear it.
i'm not very far in at all, so who knows how it will go, but it's already more than i ever thought to hope for.

Been considering doing some video game streaming as a side project. Just some chill, relaxing streams of me playing old-school (vintage, abandonware, etc) point-and-click adventure games talking in my old-timey okey-dokey way, peppered by streams of profanity if something startles me.
Stuff like Myst and the early Monkey Island games, yes. But also Schizm, Connections, Legacy of Time, Darkfall, Day of the Tentacle, Atlantis, The Cameron Files, Post Mortem, The Longest Journey...
Anyway. SylvanFrecklesGaming. Coming...soon? I have no idea, but it could be fun!
