What’s up with the humans in Moominvalley?? (2019) Like are they actually human, or just humanoid? Because I’ve seen people draw Snufkin and sometimes Little My with a tail. I mean Mymble seems to be a human rabbit mix because of how many children she has (lol) but seriously there’s only like a handful of humans and whenever they pop up I’m just so confused by their presence

Too-Ticky seems to be human and imma just assume so because 😎👍 but Snufkin and Little My aren’t off the hook because I’ve seen that in a different version of Moominvalley Snufkin has a dad?? (Pfft can’t relate) and isn’t his name like The Joxter? And that he has a tail in that version because if so then does Snufkin in that version have a tail too or not? And if not is that because of Mymble?

I’m not sure either way but I will say I do love seeing Snufkin with a tail, I think it’s adorable and tails are under appreciated in my eyes but thank you for reading this and have a lovely day/night/time!!

I think Snufkin and Joxter might be the only one that is not named their own species.

Mymble is named that because she is a mymble. Little My is similar, she is a little Mymble.

Moomin and his parents are all named Moomin because they are Moomintrolls

Snork and Snorkmaiden are snorks

Every fucking hemulen is named Hemulen and THERE ARE SO MANY HEMULENS

Mrs Fillyjonk and her children… the Fillyjonk children

But Joxter is a mumrik and Snufkin is a mumrik-mymble hybrid and they are one of the few that are exceptions to the rules

i love you mama blondie!!! i love you sm!!! shes kinda my mymble tbh she just wants loads of kids man. her wife has to disappear often for her job and when she comes back blondie has 3 new kids holding onto her, cupid gets excited like its christmas and she just got a new puppy but instead its a mixture of new sons and daughters, some of which are not even human. cupid loves her most-of-the-time pregnant wife sm, the biggest pro is of course the bigger boobies her wife gains. during blondie's first pregnancy she had ran to cupid to excitedly show off that her bra no longer fit, the two had a fancy dinner to celebrate lol

future cupid has short hair bby!! after a while into their relationship she started allowing herself to show parts of her real self, so the shorter hair and blue eyeshadow is back baby!! she sometimes just fully stays in her elemental form at home, but her cherub look is more accepted in public, blondie and the kids are use to the changes in looks that cupid undergoes.

their first daughter is shy, sweet and looks very much like blondie (the current Goldilocks) and blondie's mother (the prior Goldilocks). a perfect future Goldilocks to continue the story... although there is a chance she could end up a beast- daring who had become a much more generous king had offered to be the donor when blondie and cupid announced they were looking for one. blondie jumped at the opportunity to have her child be royal blood, so daring and rosabella also have shared custody and usually have her every other week. blondie and daring have a furious bet going on about whose destiny she is going to get, rosabella and cupid stay far out of it.

their first son is adopted, his parentage is unknown but its likely he's not a fairy tale character. hes rambunctious and likes to play in the garden with blondie. he usually ends up covered in mud.

their third child is in fact a bear cub, blondie refuses to elaborate where she got him from but cupid has some ideas and they aren't great. blondie puts him in special handmade baby clothes, its unknown if hes a sentient or wild bear until he turns 4 and speaks for the first time. cupid sighs in relief happy she doesn't have to learn to speak bear. blondie and cupid are fiercely protective of their furry little boy and will straight up throw hands with anyone who talks shit about him.

their 4th child is a girl, although she isnt born in this picture. she has brown hair like her father dexter, blondie managed to snag kids from both the charming boys and shes very proud of that (she jokes about how she wishes darling was a boy so she could complete the whole set) cupid was the one who asked about dexter being the donor and raven had raised a teasing brow "you're not still trying to get with him right? it would be a little crazy if you've been waiting this long for your big master plan to steal him from me" cupid had playfully punched her shoulder and explained it was blondie who would be getting pregnant not her. thankfully raven and dexter also agree to shared custody so blondie isn't struggling with all the children constantly. the little girl is kind and loving, she idolizes her mother raven and tries to dress like her, cupid and blondie support her fashion choices.

theres more kids that come and then grandkids when those kids are older, but these are the 4 that appear here :)

Snufkin's backstory

I have a headcanon that seems to explain the whole backstory of Snufkin. I don't know, maybe someone before me has already proposed such an idea, but personally I have never seen anything like it. In all animatics, comics and just fan clippings, I saw a baby Snufkin in a basket being carried down the river like some kind of Noah. And I have always been haunted by the question why did they do it? what were the prerequisites for this? After all, the Mymble-mom and Jokster may not be the best parents, but clearly not so much.

As a result, I remembered the very first book, where there was a terrible flood. And what if this flood got to the island of the Mymbles? In this case, Snufkin, caught up by the wave, could simply be separated from the others. And he was incredibly lucky to survive such a flood at all. Since we know perfectly well what the current is capable of, even for an adult. The Mymble-mom has quite a lot of children, so it's quite understandable why she couldn't save everyone. Perhaps a few more children besides Snufkin were lost in that flood. I'm not even talking about the fact that someone could not survive at all.

So I finished my Snufkin costume, which is very fun and exciting. And when I make costumes, especially for one like this where I have to extrapolate a lot of details, I like to think about the character the costume is for and their background and why they would wear what they do.

So this got me thinking. Snufkin isn’t given a ton of background, at least not in the books (I haven’t watched any of the shows yet). We know that his father is the Joxter and he’s one of, if not the, youngest of the Mymble’s children. So it’s at least inferable what some of his childhood was like, based on the Mymble and the Mymble’s Daughter’s appearances.

So what I figured from there would be how Snufkin became who he was. He’s clearly shown to be an introvert who needs plenty of alone time. And from what’s shown of the Mymble’s family, it seems like the antithesis of the environments he prefers. So I think that that’s the reason he became a wanderer. I’d imagine he would probably try and duck out of the house whenever possible in search of peace and quiet when it all got too much. As he got older, he would have left for longer, eventually staying out for days at a time; with the number of children in the house, there’s a decent chance his absence wasn’t even noted. Eventually, he just left altogether; the constant noise and chaos of home just got to be too much for him. I don’t imagine the Joxter, noted for hating the rules and avoiding anything involving effort, would have been a very attentive parent. He probably drifted in and out of the house, avoiding responsibility and wandering off on adventures whenever he felt like it. Maybe a young Snufkin looked up to him, figuring a life like the one he led would be better than living in the busy and chaotic Mymble household. Snufkin heading off on his own from a young age would also explain why he and Little My weren’t especially well acquainted before she came to the Moominhouse: he just wasn’t around.

I’m really happy with how this costume turned out. I used a lot of linen fabrics, since I figured they looked a bit rough and natural and perfect for him. I also put wooden buttons on the jacket and shirt, since that seems like something he would wear; he’s seen whittling at some points, so it’s not too much of a stretch to imagine him making wooden buttons. After a long internal debate with the part of me that wants to make every costume cute and frilly and fancy, my only concession to girlishness was Kirsten-Larson-style looped braids, which was honestly just more of a concession to my hair than anything else. As cute as cottagecore Snufkin would be, it just doesn’t fit the character.

There were a handful of details I added that I really liked. The wooden buttons are one. The hair ties are made of the same sturdy linen as the pants rather than being fancy ribbons. There are extra pocket in this outfit, in both the pants and the jacket. The hat brim is interfaced with whatever random interfacing scraps I had, which felt very appropriate.And the flowers on the hat come off, so I could add a feather instead later if I want.

Hi! I’m obsessed with the joxter and snufkin species charts you made a while ago, and your headcanons for other creatures like muddlers, hemulens, and fillyjonks. Have you ever thought about what other species that we haven’t seen in canon (to my knowledge) might be like? Such as the children of unions between muddlers and joxters, or fillyjonks and mymbles, or anything else honestly, I’m just listing what comes to mind. Or your headcanons for some of the less well-known canon species. Apologies if you’ve already covered this— I just really like your takes :)

First of all, thank you so much!!! I was actually really nervous about posting that at first but I'm glad to see some people enjoyed it so much ^^

Secondly, "species" in Moomin are a tough thing to crack, because there are so many design iterations that change drastically, one-off designs, vague designs and unnamed consistent designs, all of this compounded by the universe's vague naming conventions, that to try and make a comprehensive taxonomy would be a scientific nightmare. Why do I say this? Because this goes hand-in-hand with the impossibility of truly classifying or generalizing characters of mixed parentage.

Like, riddle me this:

How in the world are these two siblings??? (Assuming Fuzzy is still Fuddler's mother in the comics which feels likely but, you know, tHeRe'S nO cOnFiRmAtIoN)

This is a very exemplary case because, like, these two were never referred to as "a Muddler" or "a Fuzzy" before, which is especially notable for Sniff because we get a bunch more content of him and he was never referred to as a thing other than "a Small Animal", and to further muddy (haha) the waters a bit, Sniff was originally going to be named "the Muddler" before Tove had settled on naming him Sniff and giving it to his replacement (in a play adaptation of Comet in Moominland) turned father. They come from the same parents but to make sweeping headcanons that apply to not just both of them but also every possible character of the same or similar parentage would be an injustice.

And it's not just them: Misabel and Mabel? Hodgkins and his brother? They look nothing alike either, who's to say what general statements about their biology even should apply to them?

Moomin species genetics can be so wild. Did you know bipedal creatures can have viable offspring with the Sea-horses? The sky really is the limit!

As for headcanons about lesser known species... Hmm... Well it's kind of hard to try and refer to them because most of the time they're not named at all, and even then so many of those unnamed species are so straightforward it's kind of hard to come up with something weird about them in a way that isn't on an individual level, but if you held a knife to my throat.... Uhhh....

I like to think these beaked people that you see quite a bit in the comics can move their necks quickly and they look like birds where they look around.
