So . . . My Grandpa died on Thursday night. I found out Friday morning after I'd stopped driving. When he passed, I think we felt it. Honestly, I have some regrets about our last few years, having to live with the decisions I made trying to protect my heart, yet trying to navigate living and loving from afar. I choose not to stay there, in this moment. I choose to be thankful for his life, his presence in our lives, and his beautiful way of drawing you into his. I miss him. I will always miss him. Good night, friend of my Grandmother who after many trips and talks and outings married her and made her a better woman than the donor that left her and my mom (...and might even still be alive). Good night, friend of my father who suffered long hours of friendship with a man whose love for God and family drew you together and knit you in friendship and fathership in that bond that is hardly described in simple or concise terms. Good night, friend of us kids who never knew how much we needed a Grandfather until you came along and with cake and ice cream and Christmas gifts and the constant need for profound sayings and hard handshakes and strong hugs, you made your presence known and felt and even longed for in your way. Good night, father to my mother, who took her kids and her heart and cherished us with the most gracious and gentle love, wit, and humor that negated all pains, hardships, and faults. Good night, and I'll see you in the Morning.

Eighteen years ago today I lost one of the greatest men in my life, my Grandpa Gernatt, my mom’s dad. I was eight when he died, but I still remember his hearty laugh, hardworking mentality, and his talks. I didn’t get many of them, but when we lived with them I loved being around him. I miss him a lot in the good times and found myself missing him today. I tried not to think about it much and I’m crying writing this but It’s okay to cry. I can’t wait to see him again.
