This week's episode of Vinland saga was deeply heartbreaking.

So far we have seen how terrible slavery is, but only (mostly) in theory. In the way one may look at a neighboring country with serious issues and think, yeah, that sucks.

This episode takes it to a personal level. Sure, we saw Einar's family die at the beginning of the season, but we didn't care for him then. We didn't know him. He was just one of many victims. Like Arnheid. She is first introduced as a mild, nice lady that won't harm a fly, fooling us into thinking her life is perhaps not too bad. And little by little, we're fed pieces of her misery.

Abused by the mistress of the house. Doomed to a life as sex slave, and pregnant with a child of the master. A dead child. A lost family. And yet she smiles through it all. She picks up the little crumbs of joy she can and gives up on her freedom, on her past life. She is able to laugh at last. Until the storm hits, and she's not able to let it pass. Just when she was starting to accept her fate, when she was settling in her life as a slave.

Garnar, her husband, ruined by slavery, shaped into a desperate beast driven by blind revenge finally reunites with her, only to die in her arms as he dreams about the life they can no longer have. And she can't even have that one moment in peace, because she's a slave, and surrounding her are men waiting to take her back to her doom. Her life is no longer hers. Her future snatched right out of her hands.

Just beautifully done. At the beginning of the season I used to think Thorfinn was being too hard on himself. He was just a child after all, when he was out in the war. However, living like this, amongst slaves, experiencing first hand their struggles and regrets, the sheer injustice of the abuse, how could he not blame himself? He, too, ruined lives, broke families apart. Killed indiscriminately and sent people into slavery.

#Doodles #Wander Over Yonder #Wander #Sylvia #Lord Hater #Ahhh ♥ Finally the results of my scribbly warmups coming to fruition #I wanted to make a comparison of how on-model I could get everyone first - thus the doubles from the last set as well #Yeah some of those were meant to be a bit wilder....like I said those were my warmups lol here's where things started getting good #It was still an uphill battle but Wander was where I broke - after his big ol' pile'a sketches anyhow. They weren't quite what I was after #But after a point I just got double mad and started making up weird shapes!#And ended up happy with them :D #He looks quite different but I rather like all those aspects of him haha #Squinty eyes and claws and sharp teeth and a bit of a mullet haha #He's a hippy he deserves a mullet as a treat #And a pipe for good measure #And then if Wander was fun Sylvia was on another level <3 #She has something of a Thraddash thing going for her which was not what I intended especially since I've never drawn a Thraddash #But I mean I'm not mad about it lol the Thraddash are pretty cool :)#I think her bottom lip is the real deciding factor there - it's a cool overlap shape! Very shape!#And I know she's got a comb but fluff was too fun not to try fjdsklafd #I do really love how Wander hugging her turned out there haha <3 They're so cute #And finally a differently stylized Hater! Heck! The sharp cheekbones sticking out from his hood is so fun to me haha #And I'm quite pleased with the how the little divot under his chin's shading turned out hehe #I haven't shown off much of my Skeleton Dance stuff which is a shame! My little sister is on her high school golf team, which is already really funny because she does not have the vibes or personality you would expect of a golfer, but she the other day she sent me a picture of her senior student athlete poster and the energy is so incredible. It's got her in her little polo shirt and glove and everything except instead of coming across as cute suburban golf girl she looks more like the sullen frontwoman of a sapphic grunge band.

Please picture a tiny Korean girl with half her hair dyed hot pink, a bunch of ear and nose piercings, eyebrows filled in with sharp red and black liner and a slit shaved into one of them, and a deeply unimpressed expression on her face, standing there in a golf uniform with a club slung over her shoulder looking more like she's about to hit you with it than she is a golf ball.

#it's so funny to me that somehow my very average centrist parents who made a point of living in boring middle class suburbia #somehow managed to raise three raging bleeding-heart socialist hippie queers in spite of themselves #which has also lead to. some very funny intersections #from what i've heard my little sister shows up all the men at the driving range with some frequency #which is a mental image that always delights me. suburban golf guys destroyed by one (1) powerful bisexual #i love her; i'm looking forward to seeing her soon #even if it's wild to think about her graduating high school -- that's my baby sister!!
