one thing I love about reading today’s Draculaposting is all the analyses of how Dracula is a master manipulator, because not only is it interesting, there are a lot of things he does that people point out that seem like obvious red flags that I didn’t even notice, which just makes the book scarier.
Plus, Dracula’s manipulation tactics are incredibly realistic. He doesn’t do anything supernatural, no mind control or whatever, but he allows Jonathan to let his guard down by being familiar with him, gains his trust by appearing insecure (I elaborated on this in a previous post), and once he does; he disguises commands as invitations, slowly establishing a power dynamic in subtle ways. There’s nobody else in the castle, so Jonathan has only Dracula to rely on, and Dracula provides him with food and even regulates his sleep schedule, meaning he’s getting Jonathan to depend on him even for basic needs. He tells Jonathan where he’s allowed to go and where he’s not, and does all this in the guise of a gracious host, so that Jonathan suspects nothing.
Oh, and just remembered! Jonathan is an orphan, and Dracula is providing him with paternal care- giving him meals, engaging him in conversation, telling him about local superstitions and offering protection from the wolves outside (WHICH HE CONTROLS)… yeah, I hate this.
