Guess who watched Crimson Peak (2015) for the first time. And loved it.
Tumblr media
(Spoilers discussed below)
I wanted to watch this movie for a long time (possibly seven years now) after seeing so many scenes/gifs of it ever since I've become a Tom Hiddleston fan. After gathering a lot of courage to watch a horror movie alone, I have finally watched it.
And, oh my god, every actor is so great in this film. The cinematography, the setting, and the music take you deep into the depths of the film. And also the outfits are so beautiful!! Love the gothic vibes!! I will never understand why this movie isn't that popular and has only 6.5 imdb rating.
Love, love, love the waltz scene.
I watched this movie specifically for Tom Hiddleston, so I'll be talking about him.
God, this man. He is so beautiful throughout the film; his expressions are so beautiful, they literally make me cry. This role suited him so much. I wish he plays more roles like this in the future. Sir Thomas Sharpe, I am obsessed with you now.
Tumblr media
Look at him, he's beautiful.
Also, hate Lucille, she gave me the creeps throughout the movie (love Jessica Chastain tho🫶)
Tumblr media
(this scene broke me. brb still crying from the ending🤧)
Time to go read some fics 🏃‍♀️

hey sky, i get it may be hard to tell the others about the Curse, but for what its worth i don’t think they’ll blame you. be angry a little, react before thinking? yeah definitely but won’t blame you
Sky: That's the thing, I know all that. I've seen the other reveal some big secrets of their own and the rest take it very well, but I still have that fear.
Sky: I mean, imagine one of your closest companions telling you that they are the reason you never had a childhood, the reason you had to fight and suffer, the reason you lost almost all of your loved ones, the reason you are one of Her favorite playthings.
Sky: I think it will still be a while yet until I get the courage to tell them.

Oh my gosh all my writers gather up cuz I have shit to say.
USE. VERBS. TO EXPRESS. THE MOOD.
For example, you could say:
She took the beans from his hand and tossed them out the window.
What do you think of that? Cuz if I were to see that sentence with no context, my mind would go: wow! fun! lighthearted! I'm thinking that he's offering her the beans and she's taking the pleasure of tossing each out the window one by one like a pleasant daydream in a dress that looks like it was made from a picnic blanket, and he's in stained overalls and a plaid button down, and all is well in their little garden.
OR, you could say:
She TORE the beans from his hands and HURLED them out the window.
Oh. O h. Now my mind is rethinking shit. Now I'm like "dang, she's pissed. she's pissed and she's tearing these beans out of his hands in anger and frustration and, with all her absolute might, she is hurling these godforsaken beans out the fucking window. Maybe tears are running down her face. Maybe not.
And then you could say:
She stole the beans from his hands and yeeted them out the window.
And now, my mind is thinking that I've stumbled upon the crack story to beat all crack stories. I see a short ass, sly girl sneaking up on this tall, brooding guy with a serious case of resting bitch face. I see her carefully yet quickly taking the beans from his hands while he's talking. Maybe she's even replacing them with small pebbles so he doesn't suspect anything. And then, with oh-so-much grace, she throws those motherfuckers out the window before anyone can stop her. And maybe, just maybe, there's an explosion in the background.
Verbs are so powerful because they give the reader a visual image. And yes, CONTEXT ALSO MATTERS. If you have a heavy scene going on, you'll most likely get the point across either way (although, I don't recommend using "yeet" during a very angsty scene), but using powerful and impactful verbs vs lighter verbs will get you a very different scene and uhhhhh yeah that's all I have to say

what are your Sibling Rane headcanons 👀
FOAMING AT THE MOUTH. OK OK.
they were born into the faith in a very zealous family, but for some reason they have little contact with their parents (and younger sibling)
theyre very young, like 18-20, during season 3 (for reference i hc faulkner to be 19ish in s1 anc probably around 22 in s3)
theyve been on like 2 pilgrimages, which were both relatively low stakes but successful, so they really feel like they need to prove themself some way other than a pilgrimage (being faulkner's right hand is a way of doing this)
they really, really look up to faulkner and want his approval badly. Rane is a victim of his cult leader charisma like everyone else, but its not just that - faulkner is a young, devout, successful and loved member of the faith, eveything rane wants to be. they arent necessarily jealous of him, but they certainly long for his position
they see faulkner as the ultimate conduit of the trawlerman and have sacrificed the long-held traditional beliefs of their family to follow him
they fear that if their family found out about their denomination changing, theyd disown them, or worse
thats why they really need faulkner to be the "right choice" to follow, so theyre justified. they also think that by fully committing to faulkner's cause, theyll be less accountable if he's proven wrong - victim of charisma, like i said
thats why they curse carpenter so vehemently, even though they must see her as an almost legendary figure from their childhood stories
i think that covers it.... im so normal about this character with like 2 appearances and 4 lines sibling rane i love you

no bc the way chloe gong used the tragic story structure for tvd/ove is perfectioN, especially with the reversal of fate/peripeteia is just so well done, like it is just the end of tvd and the exact idea of "the lover and the lair, the lair and the lover" and like AHHH it's so good

Who was the most lucky and un-lucky person from TBoSAS?
Why do you pick them? Please give reasons.
You can interpret the luck and un-luck thing however you want.
Thank you :)
@curiousnonny
before i start i just wanna say tysm for asking my first ever question!!
so, i believe that the most lucky would be just anyone who wasn’t affected. take Festus Creed, for example. he was a mentor but wasn’t really harmed, emotionally or physically. you could also say Livia Cardew, Palmyra Monty, Felix Ravinstill, etc. basically any mentor who got to stay in the Capital and wasn’t harmed in anyway. not tribute, because their lives in the districts aren’t amazing so they weren’t lucky to begin with.
i believe that the most unlucky is Sejanus Plinth. i think that Lucy Gray is a very close runner up, but Sejanus is definitely my choice. he had a terrible series of events in his life, and then it ended *way* too quickly. these events include:
the dark days
moving from two to the Capital
getting assigned Marcus
Marcus dying
getting kicked out of school
becoming a peacekeeper
witnessing his first hanging on the peacekeeper side
his hanging
obviously, each event has its own emotional and psychological stuff that has affected him besides just the events themselves. Sejanus had a tough life, and if he survived it would’ve been hard for him to live in the Capital. it would’ve been horrible either outcome. if he had survived, he might’ve gone through with the suicide plans this time. i consider Sejanus as the most unlucky character because no matter what, he had a terrible lifetime ahead of him.
this was a great question and i really enjoyed writing this out :D thanks!! (i noticed your version of this question for the trilogy, too)

[Part 1] My thoughts on Last Twilight (01x10-11)
Spoilers for eps 10-11, obviously!!
Hi guys, just finished watching ep 11, and to be CLEAR, I’m not here to complain about the ending- it’s one of the aspects that I actually quite agree with, but I do have some thoughts about the last few episodes, specifically eps 10-11.
Maybe it’s just me, or I just lack a nuanced perspective in watching dramas, but in my opinion, there are a couple of things that seem… off in terms of pacing and development.
1. Day’s Mom + Night + The Surgery
Throughout episode 10, Day’s mom was reticent and disapproved of Day’s relationship with Mhok, as evidenced by her barring her son from seeing his boyfriend, confiscating his phone and changing the wi-fi password, etc. Aside from this, she says lines such as:
“I’m losing him no matter what I choose to do. At least I feel more comfortable knowing he’s inside his room.”
Tumblr media
(Not her best moment HA)
From what I saw, the mom was acting as a mom should do— being protective of her son, worrying for his future, as well as the struggle that many parents go through, to let go of their children and see them as adults.
These are the underlying reasons for her behavior, and although we, as viewers, understood her motives and motivations, we also understood that Day being blind should not remove his right to autonomy. [This post by @befuddledcinnamonroll here, explains it well.]
Although he is blind, this does not mean that he is somehow unable to function as a human being, nor is he unable to live life and pursue his dreams and ambitions. Day is a person with his hopes and dreams, and his blindness does not define these intrinsic things that make up his humanity.
Tumblr media
If at episode 9, Day had embraced his blindness, and accepted the reality of his situation, his mother remains to be at the same point that he was at in episode 1- she is grieving.
She grieves her son’s future, the image of her son that she had built in her head, which that thereupon been shattered with the accident that led to his condition. Day was her Mirror - he was ambitious, successful, self-assured, and even overly cocksure. With him being so similar to her, it made sense why she had a bias towards him. He was the “golden child”, while Night was the “villain” because he was the “good-for-nothing” son that mirrored his father. They all had defined roles in the family dynamic, which then dramatically shifted when Day became blind. Suddenly, Day couldn’t be the successful or self-assured one. He couldn’t be the golden child and Night had to step up, ultimately breeding resentment between the parties. [ @btwinlines makes a really good analysis of this here.]
With the shift in dynamics, Day resented Night for seemingly “taking what was his” aka occupying the role that he once had. He resented Night as he believed that Night relishes in the spotlight, now that he has the opportunity. And aside from Day, the mother also resents Night, blaming him for the accident because she also feels like she has lost something, as a mother— the once bright future of her favored progeny.
Tumblr media
Throughout the show, Day grows past his resentment as he adapts and embraces his reality, but this is a growth that is not similarly reflected in his mother. While Night and Day were able to reconcile, what episode 10 failed to address (which I had hoped would be addressed in episode 11), was how she, too, had to face the reality that her son’s blindness did not take him away from her. He is still him, the same Day with the same personality and soul. Although he would not be able to accomplish the things that he initially set out to do in his life, his blindness doesn’t make him less of a person. Keeping him caged in his room and prohibiting him from contacting people outside of the house is choking the progress that her son had made from episodes 1-9, and she must see that Day has the capacity to be independent and NEEDS his independence to be a fully realized being. She needs to see that her son is not without agency now that he is disabled.
Tumblr media
And I had thought that this is where the surgery would come in. C’mon, no one actually thought it would work, right?
Ok so. With the surgery as a plot device, what could have been done is to create a catalyst— casting a glimmer of hope in what the mother believes to be a hopeless situation, and then forcing her to realize and accept the reality, like what her son had already done. In my head, it would all be slow, a depiction of the last 3 stages of grief— bargaining, depression, and acceptance.
Bargaining— the surgery is a representation of this stage, as the mom holds on to the hope that her son can be “cured” and all the previous familial dynamics of the past can return to “normal”.
Depression— the surgery fails, all hope is gone, and the mother will be left to pick up the pieces— Day’s devastation at the failed surgery and her own devastation as all doors to the past are now closed, all opportunities exhausted. Maybe this will bring out tension in the family, and maybe the mother would take initiative to repair her relationship with BOTH of her sons, making mistakes along the way.
Acceptance— the mother accepts all that I have highlighted above (Day is STILL Day, and he needs independence to live a fulfilling life as a fully realized person, Night should not be a villain in her eyes, and that change is necessary for her family to stay together).
But that is not what happened at all.
Instead of addressing the prior concerns of the previous episode, after Day’s surgery became an opportunity, it’s like the mom did an abrupt 180? She is suddenly accepting of Mhok (like… wow… didn’t see that coming) her issues with Night are never addressed beyond the beef stew scene in episode 10, and… all her previous controlling behaviors just… vanish… *poof* magic. And to top it all off, A TIMESKIP, OF ALL THINGS.
Tumblr media
Change takes time. It’s not like the mom can just flick a switch and then immediately change her viewpoints, address her internalized resentments and just be “fixed” herself, just like how all the problems in the family dynamic can’t just be fixed with one shared beef stew at a Christmas dinner. These are deeply rooted concerns, all planted before the show had even begun, even before Day’s blindness.
Tumblr media
Episode 11 had the perfect catalyst, a catalyst that would throw a wrench in the tenuous peace previously established that Christmas day, a catalyst that could have triggered a forceful, painful, organic growth in the lives of the characters, one that would have them take a step back and say,
“Man. We need to change things.”
Everything is not fine. The room is on fire, and we can’t continue to stay in this room.
Just… imagine how beautiful the contrast would have been. A calm before the storm, a truce on Christmas, immediately followed by a crack in the glass, a break in the fabric. And a reminder that change is painful, and the last stage of grief, acceptance, is crucial for any permanent state of change.
Tumblr media
And that’s not what happened. It feels… hollow, somehow.

Okay but Mami is insanely strong and low key kinda broken when you actually think about it
Not counting Madoka (who is an outlier power wise because of time loop shenanigans) Mami is probably the strongest member of the Holy Quintet and one of the strongest magical girls we’ve seen full stop, being both incredibly powerful and highly competent/tactical
Tumblr media
To start with the fact that Mami’s muskets aren’t summoned weapons like with Sayaka’s sword or Kyoko’s spear, but instead are made out of her ribbons not only shows Mami’s sheer dexterity and precision with her ribbon manipulation but also just how creative she is, for Madokami’s sake the girl literal got ribbon magic and just went ‘you know what would be cool to make out of this muskets’
Tumblr media
Speaking of which Mami’s muskets have some frankly absurd firepower with her volume of fire ranging from average bullet hell game to almost enough dakka
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Destruction wise her Trio Finale is basically a ballistic missile she can summon which is powerful enough to easily kill witches in a single shot or level buildings if she wanted, seriously in the Magica Record anime after she transforms into Holy Mami it takes everything Sayaka has just to deflect one of Mami’s Trio Finale (after getting her arms blow off trying to block it) and the resulting explosion is absolutely massive
Tumblr media
Mami is also a very experienced fighter being a veteran magical girl with years of experience fighting witches and the occasional other magical girl giving her incredible awareness and instinct in battle
Tumblr media
Even in a smarts/tactical sense Mami is pretty incredible not only using her ribbons in a variety of ways to give herself the edge such as swinging around to increase her mobility or restraining/binding her opponents but also how in Rebellion she managed to both work out a strategy to counter Homura’s time-stop and stealthy attach a ribbon to Homura without her noticing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So yeah basically Mami is actually a beast, what an absolute queen.
Oh, and she looks elegant and graceful as hell while being a badass.

IN MY ENGLISH CLASS, WE'RE DOING A SPOOKY/HORROR UNIT AND ONE OF THE THINGS WE COULD DO WAS A LITTLE SNIPPET FROM THE STRANGE CASE OF DR. JEKYLL AND HYDE AND MY INNER THEATER KID IS SCREAMING. BC IT'S ALSO A MUSICAL, so I was telling my teacher Abt it and he was like "oh, it sounds interesting" or something (PLUS HE WORKS WITH THE THEATER CLUB IN OUR SCHOOL) SO I PLAN TO TELL HIM TO LISTEN TO THE MUSICAL (or just the best songs)...... AND AND AND, DURING HOMEROOM HE PLAYS MUSIC OR JUST A SONG (this morning he played Taylor Swift ((I low-key don't like her, idk why))) AND MAYBE IF I REMEMBER I COULD ASK HIM TO PLAY I NEED TO KNOW BC THAT SONG IS SO GOOD

i've washed my hands what seems to be a thousand times, scrubbing every imperfection off my skin. as the ink that stains my hands slowly starts to fade away, i imagine pieces of my insecurities washing away with it. the water feels cold; unknown. i scrub, rub, scrub, waiting for something to happen: anything. i rub, scrub, rub, begging for something to occur. i beg for a solution: on my knees; never on my feet. i scream, i scream, i scream, but i am left unheard. for what is an imperfection against unknowingness?

She found herself teetering on the edge of a cliff, where love felt like a delicate tightrope stretched across a chasm. Her heart, like a fragile bird, perched precariously, torn between taking flight into the unknown or retreating to the safety of its cage, wary of the winds of affection that threatened to both lift her to new heights and cast her into the abyss of heartbreak once more.

On Common Metaphors and Their Inadequacies
I know that the phrase "double-edged sword" is traditional and all, but I feel like it doesn't convey the concept of "this could serve you, but it could also hurt you" very well.
Perhaps I misunderstand the phrase, but I'm pretty sure a "double-edged sword" is supposed to be, like, a broadsword like this:
Tumblr media
You can see that there are, in fact, two sharp edges on that sword.
Now, this doesn't seem like a bad thing that could hurt the user (of course, all weapons can hurt the user, but that's not the point). Both of those edges are pointing away from you and are separated from you via the guard. It doesn't easily harm the user, as the phrase "double-edged sword" would have you believe.
Based on this, I propose that we stop using the phrase "double-edged sword" to refer to such a situation.
Now you may be wondering, "But it not for that most wonderful, traditional, and well-established if inaccurate phrase, how would we convey the emotions and circumstances related to a situation that might as easily harm its user as it would the user's opponent?"
Well, on this momentous and revolutionary day, I, an innovator, a linguist, and a person who's usually correct, propose to you:
Nunchucks.
Yes, that's right, nunchucks.
According to Wikipedia, my brain, and probably yours too depending on who exactly you are, nunchucks, also known as nunchaku, are two sticks, traditionally wooden but often made of other things nowadays, connected by a chain. See:
Tumblr media
You may see this and think "wow, that sure seems like a handy and easy-to-use weapon!" You are wrong.
You may not know this, but chains are kinda hard to control, and so are dense, fast-moving things. Now imagine putting those two things together and then putting them right by your hands. It doesn't make a pretty picture.
Obviously any weapon can be used well when one has the training, but I can only imagine it takes significantly more training to use hard-to-control, fast, and volatile weapons than it does use stick-but-sharp-and-heavy.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
