“The only regret I have is selling my soul to spineless scum like you.” — Chapter 10 of Part Four - Collector of the Sahuldeem series has been up for over a month!
...and I’m just now posting art for it, haha, oops. :’) As I said, I’ve had a few things going on IRL that have needed my attention (and I’ll be posting about the biggest of those things quite soon). This big ol’ RL event is still in-progress, so not as much headway as I’d like has been made with Part Five - Martyr, but rest assured that it is still on the horizon. Also a hell of a Q&A backlog.
In the meantime, enjoy this weird art~

Star Wars and racism
Normally I don't like to talk about this topic and given Tumblr's reputation I might as well have a ''kick me'' written on my back but just like those people are allowed to write pages upon pages about how star wars is ‘‘problematic’‘ I’m  allowed to disagree. And I'm sure a lot of people have similar opinions but are too afraid to show it.
1. ‘’An alien has an accent therefore it's a caricature of whatever people have this accent.’‘ It's a huge galaxy with thousands of different species, planets, and cultures. Of course, not everybody will speak the same way. I think it's pretty cool and accurate.
2. ‘’Toydarians, Muuns and Trandoshans are Jewish stereotypes.’‘ It's just like the Orc argument. If you think any of those creatures and your immediate thought is, Jew, maybe you're the racist.
Watto is the poster child of the Jewish star wars stereotype and I never understood that. Because of his accent? Because of his nose? When we see more Toydarians in the Clone Wars, we see they are nicer and nobler than Watto. Their clothes and their king's saber remind me of Polish szlachta. And even Watto has a great backstory that explains his selfish and greedy behavior. Basically, he took part in a war that left him traumatized and he took it out on others.
Tumblr media
Random person: Then why didn't they explained it in the movie?
Me: Because that's not what the movie is about.
Random person: How was I supposed to know that not every single member of this species is an asshole?
Me: Basic logic. Just because a white person, a man, a Chinese person, or whoever was mean to you doesn't mean that everybody is like that.
Muun noses help them warm up to the cold air in the mountains that they live in. Their architecture is similar to that of Greece. In the clone wars, we see that they have somewhat of a clockwork theme. Because they're so good at math. That's more of the Alps and the Switzerland inspiration.
Tumblr media
Neimoidians have Asian accents and hats. But their clothes and jewelry is more similar to the European aristocracy. Even their guards look Spanish to me.
Tumblr media
Long story short the star wars aliens aren't supposed to represent one single group of people. They’re a mishmash of multiple things to create something completely new and alien.
Trandoshans were never a Jewish allegory. The voice actress for Cid is Jewish and some dumb people come to the conclusion that now all Trandoshans are Jewish. Cid is a Trandoshan! She's not even the villain. The actress was chosen because her voice fits the character. Also, Cid has a bar and her VA played in the show Cheers. This is grasping at straws to create a controversy.
Tumblr media
3. ‘’But there are bad guys who are racist.’‘ ''But this guy was a victim of speciesism! Why is he a bad guy?'' ''But these are good guys why are they racist to other species?''
Tumblr media
It's almost as if things aren't so black and white.
Someone can spontaneously be discriminated against and discriminate against other people. Chiss think of themselves as the best in the galaxy. Meanwhile, Thrawn is being looked down upon for being not human. A taste of his own medicine in a way. And it doesn't look like he thinks ''This is terrible! No one should be treated this way!'', it's more like ''I'm going to put up with this until I get to rule you all, you pathetic humans.''
That one episode of the rebels in which pretty much everybody calls the last Geonosian ''the bug''. Or during the Umbara arc when our beloved clones call the Umbarans ''shadow people''. Or how in the unfinished Utapau arc Anakin is a dick to a Toydarian because he reminded him of Watto. Or how Anakin hates Hutts, even a baby.
It's almost like the characters can have grudges against their enemies or form their opinions on their worst experiences.
Besides, in a galaxy where you can die any number of ways, be enslaved, full of alcohol, drugs, crime, and other terrible things name calling isn't that big of a deal.
Tumblr media
It also shows the tragedy of it all. Every species suffered in some way and if they were allowed to talk about it and bond they might've been friends.
It’s getting long. I might write a part 2 or responses if I get any comments.

Star Wars species study: muun

Do you have any Muun headcanons?
So I didn't really know that much about Muun and had to do a little research this morning. One thing I find interesting is that they are said to live in a snowy, mountainous climate, yet have super elongated and slender features.
Tumblr media
In biology, there's a principle known as Allen's Rule, which states endothermic animals in colder climates tend to have shorter limbs and appendages than similar animals in warmer climates to reduce heat loss. This appears to be the opposite of what we see in Muun.
Tumblr media
For a long time, this was thought to be due to selection pressures, but actually some research is showing that cold temperatures actually suppress cartilage growth in homeotherms. The hypothesis is that, because cold weather constricts blood vessels, that limits nutrient flow and therefore growth in soft tissues like cartilage.
In Muun, their most distinguishing feature is said to be compressed/flattened noses! So perhaps the cold weather in the environment they are native to contributes to their appearance. So if you took a Muun infant and raised them in a warm climate, would they grow a normal nose? Perhaps.
I'm still perplexed in how they've adapted to a cold environment yet have such long, frost-bite ready limbs. Maybe they are native to a particularly warm microclimate, like volcanically-active mountain ranges, and originally lived near the natural heat source? And over time, obviously being intelligent, they made body coverings and structures that allowed them to expand their range further out, but at the cost of their nose cartilage?
Just a thought.
Also I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that I strongly prefer how @stagbeetleboy draws Muun to how they are depicted in canon.

Army Swap AU: 8D8
In a galaxy where the Confederacy of Independent Systems went super into biotech instead of mass industrialisation, and the Jedi’s secret deal with the Kaminoans fell through so they had to create a different army, the Republic soldiers are droids and the Separatist soldiers are clones.
We found a weird guy in the basement blowtorching people to death. He’s our receptionist now.
Following the collapse of the Separatist movement and the isolation of the Outer Rim from the rest of the galaxy, the demand for clone soldiers also collapsed, leading to clone manufacturers unloading their remaining stock with no cyborg modifications or education anywhere they can, usually for cheap manual labor. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to find one of these unfortunate beings under Jabba’s service.
Alternatively, 8D8 is a natural-born Muun who ended up in a Man in the Iron Mask type situation. It’s a mystery!
Regardless, a Muun majordomo instantly lends an air of refinement and luxury to any establishment. Naturally, there are rumors that 8D8 is in fact a retired IG-88 with severe scarring from surgical removal of cybernetic implants. Boba isn’t sure either and he’s just going along with any clout advantage he has.
IG-88 died raiding the second Death Star, but he doesn’t know that.
Reinterpreting 8D8′s intricate joints as silk cording is one of the best design ideas I ever had because:
Fancy
Sharp geometric lines in a droid vs. organic flowing lines in a living being
Looks like embroidered matador pants, tying back to his violent past

San Hill was seated in his office at his preposterously large desk, idly enjoying the view from his window instead of doing anything about the stacks of datapads, credit notes and durasheet documents before him. The intercomm beeped for his attention, and he accepted the call with an annoyed sneer. “What is it? I’m incredibly busy right now.”
But instead of the expected pleasant vocabulator of his secretary droid, a thick cough burst over the line like static, followed by a familiar, growling voice. “Clear your schedule, San Hill.”
The Muun sat up straight as a duranium beam, but remained calm. He depressed the transmission switch. “Good afternoon, Grievous. What, exactly, are you doing on this line? Did something happen to my secretary droid?”
“Yes. I did. I’m coming in.”
Chapter 10 of Part Four - Collector of the Sahuldeem series is up! This is the FINAL chapter of Part Four! (Chapter art will be posted as soon as I can get to it)
Copying/pasting what I said over on AO3:
And thus concludes Part Four - Collector! Phew. This one took a VERY unexpectedly long time to get through, for which I apologize. For how eager I was to post Qymaen's adventures as a collections agent, I was slammed with a ton of burnout during 2022 followed by a new job, which has kept me busy (though thankfully not as overwhelmed). But WE MADE IT! And now Qymaen is going home.
As usual, I'll need a bit of time before I start up the next part, especially since I have a few RL things going on (family visiting, house-hunting, probably moving, etc). I don't have a set date in mind for when Sahuldeem will resume, but HOPEFULLY not too long. There's still quite a bit to get through, even if the next part will be considerably shorter than 2, 3 and 4! Perhaps in the interim I can finally tackle another Q&A, and record something I've been meaning to for a while...
Regardless, THANK YOU ALL for your comments and support! I know I don't always respond but I promise I read and appreciate all of your kind words. It definitely helps with the motivation! <3
See you around, and stay tuned for Part Five - Martyr.

Muuns have 3 hearts. One normal heart and two that were consciously controlled. That might explain how they can live for so long, over 100 years old. But there are other species with only one heart that live longer.
I think three hearts regulate their temperature and oxygen intake. That way they don't get cold and don't get sick from climbing mountains.
How else do you think 3 hearts affect them? Especially being able to consciously control them? Imagine, you have a heart attack and then just think ''Heart on the left, go!''.
Right, so for most species that have more than one heart, the hearts are spread further around the body than ours are, such as in insects
Tumblr media
Where multiple hearts are necessary because they don't have a well-developed, pressurized vascular system to pump blood throughout the body, and are just like big blood-filled sacs. I don't think Muun are this way, I just think it's a neat thought. Raises questions about Geonosians. Real crime Fyzen Gor didn't get to finish watching that surgery, that's the novel I want to read.
But in cephalopods!
Tumblr media
Which also have three hearts, one to pump blood throughout the body, and two to pump blood just from the gills to the systematic heart for circulation through the body.
I imagine the Muun setup might be similar to the cephalopod system, where there is a ventricle heart which circulates blood through the body, and two hearts specifically dedicated to re-pressuring blood for circulation through the lungs, which would be helpful in high altitude, low-oxygen environments (I would think).
As for control/survival odds if they lost one heart, I would guess control would feel similar to our control over our breathing. Most of the time, it would be regulated by the autonomic nervous system and would just work without them having to think about it, but there are certain situations where they might want to have conscious control, such as we exert on our breath, holding it, hyperventilating, taking deep breaths, singing, talking, etc.
I think the ventricle heart would need to be functional irregardless, and if that one timed out, they'd die. But perhaps they could function with only one remaining branchial heart?
