Spring Gully, Bendigo, Victoria, circa 1910 A photo of a diver getting ready to go down a mine shaft. Bendigo was a small town untill the gold rush in the late 1800s which resulted in a massive boom in population. I will never be as cool as some of these guys but I don't envy that job whatsoever. Can you see the xylophone-playing sticks on his shoes? US-born Will Mahoney was a famous comic vaudevillean of the early to mid 20th Century. I didn't know there was a photo of him (by Press photographer Laurie Richards) in the @museumsvictoria collection that showed the xylophone for his comedy tap-dance act. The pic was taken in 1959 at the Melbourne Tivoli theatre in Bourke St, one of the last remnants of the 19th Century theatre strip, until it burned down in the 1960s. He looks to be wearing street clothes, aside from the xylophone-mallet shoes. His usual performing hat was a bowler (aka derby). Up to the 1960s Mr Mahoney set up his xylophone like a giant trestle table on stages all around Australia and NZ, and danced on it, playing a tune: George Gershwin gave him some. The xylophone was 5.2 metres long and with Will did 17 tours of Australia. He managed a theatre in Brisbane in the 1940s and his old mates visited: Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Artie Shaw, Tough way to make a living. Press reports of the music hall/vaudeville bills he was on also mention 'personality singer' Evie Hayes (Will was her husband), chorus girls chosen for their 'shank and shape', Cusco's trained dogs and pantomimes. The xylophone act was described as 'uproarious', 'rollicking' and a 'riot' and his comedy style as 'gay not giddy'. "She kisses me with such a smack, she makes my shirt roll up my back". The Xylophone was in his act for decades. He was nominated for a Tony award in 1956 for his role in Finian's Rainbow. You can see some of his fabulous footwork on YouTube: search Will Mahoney or Tivoli. Thanks to Trove newspaper archives and Australian Dictionary of Biography for the info. Will Mahoney 1894-1967. Born Montana, died Melbourne. @national_library_of_australia #tivoli #xylophone #vaudeville #comedian #tonyaward #eviehayes #theatre #musichall #australiantheatre #tapdance

(Swipe left) Possibly the other great gem hidden away in this year's @vamff cultural program (apart from a little talk I hosted on denim last weekend, ahem) was this small event celebrating Madame Serini - a talented designer who had worked for @le_louvre_melbourne in the 50s and went on to open her own fashion house soon after. Madame Serini (Itala Irredenta Serini) was represented by her son Marcello Serini whose daughter can be seen modelling a dress made and once worn by her grandmother. The talk was hosted by curator Deborah Tout-Smith (!!!) and former @ngvmelbourne fashion curator Laura Jocic. A compact display featuring examples of her glorious designs was sourced from the collections co-owned by @co.as.it and @museumsvictoria #laurajocic #madameserini #deborahtoutsmith #marcelloserini #fashionhistory #melbourne #melbmoment (at Immigration Museum)

The future of fashion is ethical and sustainable and it’s already underway. I wrangled a panel of impassioned participants tonight as part of the Melbourne Museum’s You Can’t Do That public programme and left infused and renewed by @jadesaritaarnott of Arnsdorff, Lois Mcgruer-Fraser of @loishazel, Ben Asakoff of @nobodydenim and the incomparable @yolandafinch, general manager of @vamff who should really have her own show! Thanks to @melstow Melanie Stow for the pic and audience participation in a ripper discussion all round @melbournemuseum @museumsvictoria @reasonmichael #youcantdothat #melbournemuseum #ethicalfashuon #sustainablefashion #futurefashion #paneldiscussion (at Melbourne Museum)
