My inability to write anything chronologically has hit so here’s a conversation from a later point in my Charming Conundrums AU (Ever After High Murdoch Mysteries AU). The context is Dexter hasn’t spoken to any member of his family since he was disowned six years ago, and now he’s investigating the murder of the father that disowned him. The murder that happened at a Family Ball.
Yeah. The whole family’s there, and they’re all suspects (except Good-Enough, who couldn’t have committed the murder because he’s left handed).
So, anyway, here’s a bit of how Daring’s interview goes. (Off track, horribly off track. These dumbasses need therapy.) It’s rough but please cut me some slack this is one of the few times I’ve posted some of my writing, like, ever.
“What you had to do?” Dexter spat incredulously. “What you had to do? Tell me, Daring, did you have to ignore me on the street every time you passed me for the past six years? Did you have to return every letter I sent you unopened? Did you have to completely erase me from your life?!”
“Dammit Dexter!” Daring shouted. “After you got assigned to Station House 4, I changed my daily route just to get a glimpse of you! I would hold your letters up to the candle light to try and make out as much information as I could without opening the envelope!” His elder brother seemed to realize then just how loud he was being. With visible effort, he lowered his voice back to acceptable levels. “I never wanted to erase you from my life, little brother.”
“But, as for your question…” Daring slumped, his ever perfect posture evaporating like water on a summer’s day. Dexter was discomfited by the sight. He wasn’t used to seeing his elder brother so tired.
“Yes,” Daring sighed. “I did. Because if I did anything less, then they’d have thrown me out without a second thought as well. And then…”
“…who would be left to shield Darling?” Dexter finished.
His twin’s proclivities, both hobby-wise and romantic, would be an absolute scandal if they ever were discovered. Or worse, if their parents should be the ones to learn the truth about their perfect little debutante. Dexter shuddered internally, recalling how pale Darling was after she was let out of one of her parentally mandated confinement periods. For her health, their parents had said, but the truth was clear to both boys. What their parents truly meant was for our displeasure.
Daring’s thoughts must have gone in a similar direction. “Exactly,” he said. “You know what it was like in that house. The constant pressure for perfection, the expectation of total obedience. Still, as bad as we had it, at least we were never locked in our rooms for weeks at a time.”
Dexter nodded grimly. “And if that was their standard response to petty grievances, what would they do if they found out about Darling’s…other interests,” he said carefully, not quite sure just how privy Daring was to their sister’s secrets.

I'm still poking away at the latest story in the Mysterious Tales of the Strange and Uncanny series. This one features some goings-on at the University of Toronto in 1905, and I managed to find digitized copies of the yearbooks from that time. This picture is from Torontonensis volume VII, 1905. The whole book is a hoot.

a doctor's care
prompt: examination (alt no.7)
whumpee: william murdoch
fandom: murdoch mysteries
remember how yesterday i said i might possibly write a follow up to my fic? well. i did that immediately lol. (the first part can be found here btw). hope you enjoy!!
Dr. Grace is fortunately not busy when William enters the morgue. She is cleaning a scalpel, and sets it down with a rather loud clatter when he nearly stumbles and has to grab onto the doorframe for support.
“What’s wrong?” she asks, hurrying to his side.
“I was struck over the head.”
“With what?” She gestures further into the morgue, and William follows her, gratefully sitting down in a chair in the doctor’s office space.
“I don’t know. Something made of metal.”
“Well, I’m glad that you came to me,” Dr. Grace says. “Too often, people think that a head injury isn’t even worth noticing.”
William does not understand how anyone could fail to notice such a painful injury. He rather wishes he was capable of this himself.
“Where on the head were you struck?”
He does not remember. The only thing he recalls is that a man had hit him. He does not know how it had happened.
“I…can’t seem to remember.”
“A bit of memory loss is quite common in cases like this,” Dr. Grace says. This is reassuring, a bit. Still, he is not accustomed to being unable to remember things. He does not like it.
Dr. Grace feels for an injury, her fingers carefully threading into his hair. It does not take long for her to discover the place where the metallic object had struck him.
“There’s a bit of blood on your head, near the hairline. The wound has stopped bleeding now, though, no need to worry.”
“Oh.” He hadn’t felt any blood. It makes sense that it would be there, he supposes.
“Now, when he hit you, did you fall unconscious?”
“Yes.”
“Have you been hearing any strange noises?”
He recalls the noise in his head when he’d first attempted to sit up. “Yes.”
“Have you experienced any strange visions?”
The black spots come to mind. “Yes.”
Dr. Grace nods. “All quite common. Have you been vomiting?”
“No.”
“Have you felt at all nauseous?”
“Yes.”
Another nod. “It is my professional opinion, Detective, that you most definitely have a concussion.”
“What is the recommended treatment?”
“Rest, first of all. I’m afraid you may need to take a few days away from work. You should lie down as much as possible, and keep your extremities warm.”
He can do these things. Even the thought of missing work does not seem so terrible in the face of recovery.
His head throbs insistently, as though to prove this point.
“Can anything be done for the headache?”
“I can give you an injection of strychnine or camphor. This ought to lessen the symptoms, but I’m afraid only rest can truly eliminate them.”
Even a lessening of the pain sounds quite good. He gives his consent for an injection and watches attentively as Dr. Grace slides the needle into his arm.
The drug starts working almost immediately. The pain in his head dulls and fades, though, just as Dr. Grace had explained, it is still very much there. This is still quite the improvement, and he relaxes, very slightly.
“I can administer more medication in a few hours, should you need it,” Dr. Grace says. “I’ll stop by after work, if that is agreeable to you.”
“It is. Thank you, Dr. Grace.”
“You’re welcome. Feel better, Detective Murdoch.”
He makes his way to the door and nods to her before he exits. His head does not spin as it had before, and he breathes a sigh of relief.
With that, William steps outside into the sun and sets a course for home.
thanks for reading! i did my best in terms of turn of the century concussion treatments, hope it was alright <3

CW Discussion of smut fanfic
Ever since I read this fic and it mentions Ed being too frustrated to bother with the fiddly ribbons holding up Stede's stockings?
Yeah, so now I can't get the image out of my head of Ed undoing said ribbons with his teeth!

For a future binding project, I’ve been typesetting a fic series I’ve loved for many years and today I hit a treasure trove! The fic takes place in the early 20th century and dancing—waltzing specifically—is present throughout. Given that the main character is a detective and technically minded, I knew I wanted to find some clip art of the footstep diagrams used to teach dance moves.
Today I found a PDF of a book from 1914 that is absolutely chock full of these illustrations—I even found a simple little arrow diagram to use as page breaks!
But my favorite illustration of all is this simple waltz step/turn that I put on the title page, entirely because when I tilted it to fill up the space, it looks like a heart ❤️

Anyway, if you binged The Murdoch Mysteries during finals week of your sophomore year in college and thought the actor that played James Pendrick looked like David Bowie if you squinted and were also drunk, you should read this series.

My media this week (21-27 Apr 2024)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
😊 rounding third, sliding home. (througheden) - 68K, enjoyable steddie AU with pro baseball player Steven & massage therapist Eddie
🥰 Daddy Issues (His Boy Next Door #39) (RJ Moray) - reread; just a big fan of Jack & Channon & their ongoing story!
🥰 Common Ground (His Boy Next Door #40) (RJ Moray) - LOVE that Jack & Ewan are finding some common ground - really love that this series is showing how two people who don't particularly care for each other can work to find connection for the sake of the people they DO love
😍 ACT-verse series (ann_anotherthing) - truly outstanding series about middle-aged Steddie getting a 2nd chance romance after their first one flamed out 25 yrs earlier. Full series is 117K but it starts with A Certain Type (54K), which is a fully complete story with satisfying HEA - the rest are flashback fics or wonderfully indulgent epilogue/vignettes, full of fluffy and delicious porn. The author confesses to basically turning them into her middle-aged OCs but 1) I think her projections of their characters in middle-age with these particular life experiences seem reasonably plausible and more importantly 2) I don't fucking care because this story and these characters (main & supporting) are AMAZING.
💖💖 +227K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
When you stop being a ghost in a shell (Bittersweet_in_Boston) - MCU: Stucky, 12K - Hydra finds Steve in 1952 & then they have The Asset and The Captain. Except they really should have known better than to ever let them see one another.
Where the Sunflowers Grow (AidaRonan) - Stranger Things: Buckingham, 30K - incredible Chrissy recovery fic with bonus Buckingham. Just. So Fucking Good.
Early Returns (rageprufrock) - Inception: Arthur/Eames, 15K - fabulous AU where Arthur's an editor who has everything on lock, dammit & Eames is a reporter who wants to mess him up. Also the newsroom is nothing but a high-pressure high school when it comes to gossip.

Update
Ever since watching the 1997 James Cameron movie, I found myself gotten into the rabbit hole of Titanic stuff. And of course...
Fanfictions.
I am not going to say which ones are good or bad but those titanic officer fanfics really caught be off guard—besides the shitload of Thomas Andrews fanfictions, of course. I found myself enjoyed some of them but most of them are just… meh. Nevertheless, I have stumbled across this one novel that worth a “Historical Fanfiction” style reaction-review.
Tumblr media
It is so obvious that this is derived from a fanfiction based on the movie (it’s an Ewan Stewart on the cover), but I have seen reviews that are “good” enough for me to read and roast about this novel
And at least, the one website that talks about our good boi Wil Murdoch has given a short overview on what the f is this about🤔
(Ngl that sweet boi has a bunch of female admirers despite already married irl)
I was thinking about letting this slide away but the price on kindle was just so tempting that I am thinking about getting a copy since it’s around £3 to purchase a Kindle edition. So, what do you guys think? A new series of historical fanfiction review?
If I am really doing this, the posts will not start until March or April since I need to work on my university postgraduate application first. ((Of course also read a bit more stuff on the Titanic officers before doing this🙃

And now that I watched my scheduled show, now is time to continue the Murdoch Mysteries re-watch. Probably while I write unrelated fanfiction.
We're at season 5 episode 11, Murdoch in Toyland, which I'm pretty sure is a James Gillies episode (I checked the wiki and I am right)
I do feel like I have to say that every episode is a threat of James Gillies now, and while there is definitely some other nemesis I dislike more, Gillies is probably pretty high on the list of Big Bads I Don't Enjoy. I don't know, I thought "I think that's a Gillies episode" and let out a little groan of displeasure.
I'll say it, I think James Gillies is just an unpleasant cunt who thinks he's better than every one. If it wasn't for the unhinged murders, he could be mistaken for my brother.

Here is just some more info about my blog:
My blog is going to be more than just Stranger Things and Jancy. This is a place for me to talk about the things I love. So here's a list of all of the things I enjoy:
Fire Emblem (No Engage spoilers please!)
L.M. Montgomery books (ex. Anne, Emily, etc.)
Murdoch Mysteries (No Spoilers for the latest season please!)
BBC Ghosts
Moomin
Manga (Yotsuba, Nichijou, Spy x Family, etc.)
Ace Attorney
Music (I play the bass and enjoy bands like Joy Division and Echo and The Bunnymen. Feel free to suggest other bands like them!)
History (ex. fashion history)
I may also post some art and fanfiction here at some point but I'm quite shy so expect mostly text posts and reblogs from me. For any of the art I post, please do not repost it anywhere. I would like to keep my art here. Please credit me also if you use it for something like a pfp. You can reblog or like the post for credit. Bio is also good too.
This is also a safe space so I will not condone any homophobia, transphobia, or racism here. People deserve to feel safe online and offline.
I will update this every once in a while when certain things like my interests change so keep an eye out for that.
I won't be posting too often as again I'm quite shy and I'm also busy with schoolwork.
I hope you enjoy your stay on my little blog. Feel free to leave when you no longer find anything that interests you on here!

🎬📺 Share ten different favorite characters from ten different pieces of media in no particular order 🎮🃏 Then send this to 10 people (anon or not, your choice)
Oh man, 10 pieces of media. That's like 10 fandoms, right? God, am I even part of 10 different fandoms? Well, different pieces of media could even be different Disney movies, so I'll start real and then use Disney to make up the rest.
Marvel - Oh, how do I pick one? Either Peter, Bucky, or Loki, I think. It varies from moment to moment.
Murdoch Mysteries - *no spoilers, please, I watch it with my mom and we haven't seen season 15 yet, or whatever the most recent one is, I lost track.* Constable George Crabtree.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine - Again, varies from moment to moment, but I love both Amy and Rosa.
Harry Potter - Either Draco or Hermione. I don't want hate over Draco because yes, he's canonically an asshole, but I've read way too much fanfiction where he's a decent person.
Kingdom Hearts - Either Riku or Axel, since I'm a sucker for nice eyes and they both have such pretty eyes ohmygod.
Final Fantasy VII (7 for those of you that don't know Roman numerals) - Cloud. See the nice eyes thing, and I'm a sucker for blondes.
Note, this is where it got really hard before switching to Disney because I don't watch that much TV, and while I read a lot, it tends to be fanfiction with my favourite characters.
7. Lilo and Stitch - Stitch. God I love Stitch, and I can even do an imitation of the voice. I have multiple hoodies, shirts, and even a pair of pajamas with Stitch on them.
8. The Lion King - Timon. He's just so fucking funny.
9. Frozen - Elsa or Olaf. Elsa is the Disney princess that is my soulmate, other than Sleeping Beauty because I would also like to sleep for a 100 years and wake up to a cute guy. But Olaf is so comedic and he doesn't always even know why. (see Frozen 2 for Olaf's comedic timing)
10. Hercules - Hades. He comes off like the gay best friend to me, and his sarcasm is unmatched.

Ok one last recommendation. This one is a full length story. A fantastic beasts crossover with merdoc mysteries. Just finished first chapter and I like it already. Anyway sorry I’ll stop posting now. I was just a very bored insomniac looking for some fun Newt fics to read and thought I’d share what I come by, since it’s really hard finding good Newt fics. Seems like there’s some good ones on ffnet. Anyway I’m hoping sleep will come now.

Fame Dr: like what sort of things do you do, like acting/training for roles (like stunt training and stuff), photo shoots, premieres? How do you deal with the paparazzi? Do you ever get overwhelmed? I’m afraid I’ll find it super scary and not fun, I know I could script that stuff out but idk if I should
when it comes to training for roles, it just depends on the movie! here's my roles and what i did to prepare:
tv shows:
The Witcher S3: i did some sword training, and learned to ride a horse again (i used to be a horseback rider but havent ridden in years so it was nice to brush up on it!). i had a dialect coach as well as i needed a british accent lmao
The Orville New Horizons: no real training required, just read a few books that Seth recommended to me so i could understand what i was saying and met with Neil Degrasse Tyson with Seth as well and he answered any questions i had
Criminal Minds: nothing really, although i did take a refresher psych course, and met with a forensic psychologist and a profiler to interview them and get a taste for the work they had to do on a daily basis
Murdoch Mysteries: nothing! just team bonding really, which i did with all of them!
The Falcon and The Winter Soldier: not my first marvel project but i sustained an injury during The Witcher shoot so i had to rebuild by core muscles a little. i also read the comics about my character.
Movies:
We're The Millers: no prep i literally showed up and did what my mom told me to do lmao
Knives Out 2: team bonding which was scary and i had just come off of The Witcher shoot (literally less than 18 hours after wrapping) and was exhausted but we all went out and partied. other than that, i met with Rian and rewatched the first one
Batman v Superman: oh dear lord. i put myself through literal hell for this role but i dont regret it. i was eating as healthy as i could and working out every day, plus fight training, and taking extra ballet classes to make sure my body was in the best shape it could be (shit was rough) so i could do my own stunts. met with Zack Snyder and read all the comics Kara is in. I only met with Henry once as despite being in the same film, we were only in 2 scenes together, and one of them i didn't talk so we barely connected (he literally forgot that we were in the same movie and thought they'd recasted the original actor for Justice League the big dummy)
Mama Mia Here We Go Again: i took some refresher vocal lessons since i've only ever sang praise songs in church.
Mockinbird: my first marvel project and it literally knocked me on my ass. i thought the training for Batman v Superman was rough, it was nothing compared to this and the sheer amount of time and choreography that goes into a single fight scene oh my gosh. when i wasnt training, i was reading every single marvel comic that had my characters parents in it, and was meeting with illustrators and writers because my character wasn't in the comics, but was actually an original character that took over the internet bc of a fanfiction in 2012, and they decided to add her in lol so that meant making new comics that fit into the mcu timeline and giving my character a back story before the movies. i also met with so many marvel executives, was constantly doing interviews and meeting new people and trying to adjust to script changes practically hourly. i literally couldnt move or speak when i got a break from filming. i loved every second of it though!
Spiderman No Way Home: had just finished filming Man of Steel 2 so no training needed physically, but rewatched my past marvel projects and reread some comics that Kevin told me to to remind myself of the character
Enola Holmes 2: read the Enola Holmes book series and a few Sherlock books. i also watched Sherlock Holmes (the one w rachel mcadams as she played my character before i did) but thats about it. Henry actually remembered who i was and recommended me for the role
Secrets of Dumbledore: wand training! i took a beginners latin course to help with pronunciation at the request of JKR
Multiverse of Madness: no retraining, finished filming NWH and went into preproduction for MoM immediately
Drawing With Light: re read the book, met with the author, and met with my dialect coach again
They Both Die At The End: met with the author and reread the book!
and ngl, i despise photo shoots. i hate them with a passion, but i power through because i know they're important, but other than for promo, i don't do photo shoots which can sound weird considering im working on a makeup line with Sephora but i chose to have my siblings model it instead (with their consent of course).
and premieres can be fun if you make them fun! the red carpet usually lasts for an hour or two before the movie actually starts, and (at least for me) i only ever do between 3 and 5 interviews on the carpet because anything else overwhelms me and i'll shut down. i spend the rest of the time talking to fans and taking photos, and i'll go into the theatre early to give myself a noise and speaking break before the movie starts, and then the movie starts, and its so much different from a regular movie screening. everyone stays until the end credits, every one claps for everyone, and not a single person gets up during the movie (u didn't hear this from me but my mom wears depends for premieres just in case). the director and executives and producers usually talk to the audience and thank them and things, and sometimes it happens before and sometimes i happens after. just depends on the timing and the studio really!
i fucking hate paparazzi. i don't hate the people bc i know they're just doing their job, but i find it a tad ridiculous they have to approach me while shopping for pads and ask me how i feel about Pete Davidson and Kim Kardashian dating WHEN WE HAVENT BEEN TOGETHER FOR 3 FUCKIN YEARS. they can take photos of me all they want, i dont care. they can literally blast "ava aniston shops for period products at 3 am in dri fit shorts, puma socks, birkenstocks that are falling apart and a red henley that looks like it belongs to chris evans" all they want but to ask me about an ex's new relationship pisses me off and crosses a line. and dont get me started on the way they were when my grandma passed away because how dare i go get a coffee when i should be at home comforting my grieving mother 🙄
and i absolutely get overwhelmed. my dad has gone viral a few times because he doesnt hesitate to yell at the paparazzi when they cross a line or when he can tell i'm overstimulated. i'm very thankful that i have someone like my chrissy boy who can tell when i've had enough and am going to meltdown/shutdown and removes me from the situation (literally called his mom to come and get me in front of them because they all know not to mess w mama lisa and her babies)!
you can always script these things out, but i didnt, because it gives me a better appreciation for celebrities and the things they go through, and i personally think its a part of the experience. and messing with the press is kind of fun (in the middle of gaslighting them into thinking chris and i are married and we're having tons of fun with it) so just remember that its your dr and you can change whatever you want within reason!!
happy shifting and i hope this helps! <3
