Happy 45th Birthday Scotland’s most successful Olympian, Chris Hoy.

Born in Edinburgh on March 23rd 1975,the 1982 film E.T the Extra Terrestrial inspired Chris Hoy to cycle. He was then a mere six year old boy. Between the age of seven and fourteen, Chris Hoy raced for BMX and was ranked two in Britain, ninth in the World and seventh in Europe. He then received a scholarship from Kwik-Fit and Slazenger to compete in the United States and in Europe.

Chris Hoy was also into rowing and rugby as a student. The first cycling club that he ever joined was Dunedin Cycling Club in 1992. Chris then started focusing on only track cycling from the year 1994 joining the City of Edinburgh Racing Club, his main events included the Team Sprint and the one kilometre Time Trial. It was Team Sprint that brought him his very first World Championship medal. His team came second in 1999. The first World Title for his team came in the year 2002 at Copenhagen in the Ballerup Velodrome. He also won the one kilometre time trial that same very year beating Arnaud Tournant. He was World champion in the years 2004, 2006 and 2007.

Chris won his first Olympic gold medal in Athens 2004 in the Kilo – an event that was dropped from the programme for Beijing 2008. Chris took this in his stride and switched his focus to three other track sprint events – the Keirin, Sprint and Team Sprint. He went on to win a gold medal in all three at the Beijing Olympics, cementing his name in the history books.

Following his historic hat-trick of gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, Chris was voted 2008 BBC Sports Personality of the Year. He was also awarded a Knighthood in the 2009 New Year Honours list, capping an extraordinary year. At the 2012 Olympics in London, Chris won his fifth and sixth gold medals – in the Keirin and Team Sprint – becoming OUR most successful Olympic athlete of all time with six gold medals and one silver.

In all he won 11 Gold medals, 6 Silver and 6 Bronze in World Championships, 6 Golds and a Silver at Olympics, and 2 Gold and 2 Bronze at Commonwealth games.

Chris retired from competitive cycling in 2013 he was the first Briton since 1908 to win three gold medals in a single Olympic Games, and one of the most successful Olympic cyclists of all time.

Following his retirement, Chris remains passionate about bikes and has successfully made the transition into the business world following the launch of his bike range HOY Bikes, cycling accessories and clothing. He has published a series of children’s books – Flying Fergus – and is currently working on a second series.

In June 2016, Chris added to his record list of achievements when he finished the world’s most demanding motorsport endurance race, the Le Mans 24 Hours, on his debut. Last year he had a miracle escape after crashing a racing car at more than 100mph at Silverstone race track.

Chris has become a polished public speaker and media presenter, and he was a key part of the BBC TV’s commentary and punditry team covering the 2016 Rio Olympics and 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Hoy has been Ambassador for SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health) since 2009. In that time he has devoted many hours to raising awareness of and funds for the mental health cause.In December 2016 and December 2017, Hoy supported the Scottish Social Enterprise Social Bite by sleeping out at their Sleep in the Park events to end homelessness in Scotland.

What would Mihawk do if he was in a modern setting?

There's a few modern verse settings that I'm considering for Mihawk.

The first one is obviously a fencing teacher. In this setting I imagine him to be a retired multi-gold-Olympic-medal winner with several world champion titles under his belt that opens up a fencing school to teach young prodigies of that sport.

In the second setting I imagine him being an antique shop owner/collector of curiosities. I feel Mihawk would really appreciate such things and would proudly display them (and sell them to those willing to pay the price). The whole shop would be situated in a two story Victorian style house, where the store would be on the first and he'd live in a small flat on the second story.

The last modern setting I see Mihawk in is as an antique swords expert. In this setting he'd probably work as a university associate in the history department or maybe in a museum or even as a consultant on archaeological dig sites.

Founded in 2014 by Bryan Shull in Vancouver, WA, Trap Door Brewing is a multi-generational company producing an array of high-quality, award-winning beers. It currently operates two locations – a brewery and “beer porch” in Vancouver and a brewery and kitchen at its production location in Washougal.  

Trap Door offers a selection of beer styles including lagers, pilsners, fruited sours, stouts, and pale ales, but what it’s most known for are its hazy IPAs.  

“Trap Door is a hop-focused brewery,” says Jake Watt, Head Brewer. “This means you can expect any modern, hop-forward style from us and for us to be on the leading edge of hoppy beers including clear and hazy seasonals and one-offs.”

Bellingham Cider was begun by Josh Serface and Bryce Hamilton. Both not only came from backgrounds of growing and pressing fruit, but also made their own homemade beer and cider. When they decided Bellingham needed a great cider presence, they opened their bayside location in 2018.  

“Only using Washington-sourced ingredients, we are excited to share the bounty of our state by growing our Washington distribution,” says Bryce Hamilton, Owner of Bellingham Cider.   

The company offers a variety of fruit-forward ciders like their Rainier Cherry Dry, Blackberry Ginger, Imperial Pineapple, and even a Cascade- and Citra-hopped variety dubbed as “cider for the beer drinker.”

Patty Wagstaff (née Patricia Rosalie Kearns Combs; born September 11, 1951) is an American aviator and U.S. national aerobatic champion.

Wagstaff was introduced to aviation as a child; her father was a pilot for Japan Airlines.  After graduating from high school in California, she moved to Australia for five years where she traveled up the west coast of Australia in a small single-engine boat with no radio.  After moving to Alaska in 1978, she worked for the Bristol Bay Native Association in Dillingham, Alaska where she started taking flying lessons and began her own career as a pilot. Her first flight in a small airplane in the Alaskan bush ended in a crash and that was when she decided to learn to fly.  Her first lesson was in a Cessna 185.  After earning her single and multi-engine land, single engine sea and commercial and instrument ratings, she became a Certified Flight and Instrument Instructor. Since then Wagstaff has earned a commercial rotorcraft rating and has flown many types of aircraft. She  holds type ratings in the TBM Avenger, T-28, L-39 and Tucano. Her sister, Toni, is a pilot for United Airlines.

In 1985, Wagstaff qualified for the US National Aerobatic Team and competed both nationally and internationally until 1996. She was the top U.S. medal winner, winning gold, silver, and bronze medals in international competitions for several years.  In 1991, she won her first of three US National Aerobatic Championships, the first woman to win that competition. She was the International Aerobatic Club champion in 1993. The following year, her Goodrich-sponsored Extra 260 airplane was put on display next to Amelia Earhart's Lockheed Vega at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum. From 1988 to 1994, she won the Betty Skelton First Lady of Aerobatics award six times in a row.  In 1996, Wagstaff was the top-scoring US pilot at the World Aerobatics Championship. That year, she was also the first person to win the  Charlie Hillard Trophy, awarded to the highest scoring U.S. pilot at the World Aerobatic Championships.

In 1997, Wagstaff received her first Hall of Fame inductions, becoming inducted into both the Arizona Aviation Hall of Fame and the International Women's Aviation Hall of Fame. She was awarded the National Aeronautic Association Paul Tissandier Diploma in 1997 and won the Bill Barber Award for sportsmanship in 1998. In 2001, Wagstaff began training pilots of the Kenya Wildlife Service in Kenya. In 2002, she won the Katherine and Marjorie Stinson Award, and in 2004, was elected into what is arguably aviation's most prestigious hall, the National Aviation Hall of Fame. In December 2006, she was inducted into the International Council of Air Shows Foundation Hall of Fame and in 2007, the International Air and Space Hall of Fame at the San Diego Air and Space Museum.

Based in St. Augustine, Florida, Patty Wagstaff Aviation Safety, LLC trains pilots from all over the world in aerobatics, airmanship and upset training. She continues working in the aviation field as an airshow pilot, stunt pilot for films, consultant, flight instructor, and writer. Wagstaff is emeritus board member of the Smithsonian Institution, National Air and Space Museum, and was on the Presidential Advisory Committee to the Centennial of Flight Commission. She flies airshows across North America in a variety of airplanes, including an Extra 300S, T-6 Texan, and a P-51 Mustang. In addition to airshows, she has flown OV-10 Broncos as a seasonal aerial firefighter director in California. She is an instrument-rated pilot and has owned a Beechcraft Baron and a Cirrus SR22 and currently flies a Beechcraft Bonanza.

My Love Letter to the LuNa Ship

“As things stood at the moment, Nami begrudgingly acknowledged that she was only receiving a bronze medal. Luffy’s greatest love by far was adventure, and it was followed closely by meat. She liked to think that she was ranked in third all by herself, but knowing him, she was probably among the rest of their nakama. However, Nami was a winner, and her love for gold knew no boundaries. Meat was a very formidable opponent, but she was going to ensure that she ascended the ranks to at least be tied for first.

‘Nami, what’s with your face? That’s a creepy smile.’

Choosing to disregard that, she schooled her features and directed a question at him instead. ‘So what were you thinking about so seriously earlier?’

Instantly, his face fell, and he was silent for a few moments. ‘The next adventure won’t have something as awesome as the One Piece waiting at the end.’ He was sulking, his bottom lip protruding in an exaggerated pout.

Her eyebrows shot up. That’s what was bothering him?

‘What are you saying, Luffy?’ She reached over and placed a hand on his knee. ‘Raising a child is an even grander adventure.’

His wide eyes darted over to her then, and the sullen expression slowly dissipated. ‘Promise?’

Nami gave his knee a reassuring squeeze. ‘Promise.’

She was positive he had no idea what was coming for him, but she was going to make sure it hit him like a ton of bricks. This was going to take all the patience in the world, but she had a feeling that it would all be worth it in the end. Her brown eyes roamed over his face, drinking in the sight of his appeased, clueless smile that widened as the sunlight basked him in a soft glow. And, she had to be completely honest, if she happened to fall in love during the process, then that was a large bonus.”

“Together Forever” is a multi-chapter fic I started writing in July 2020, and it’s essentially my love letter to the LuNa ship. It’s set in the future after Luffy has accomplished his dream and now has to figure out what’s next. My opinion is that it’s not necessarily marriage/settling down, but I imagine that leaving behind a legacy would be a priority, including a child. And who would be the mother of the child? As I’ve been an ardent LuNa supporter from the very beginning of their adventure, it can only be Nami, his navigator and the one he’ll need beside him for the rest of his days as the Pirate King.

My love for LuNa started when I was in middle school and first began to read and watch One Piece, and let’s just say that it’s already been more than a decade since I was amazed by the lengths Luffy went through to save Nami from her past and secure her future with the Straw Hats. Of course, one could say that he did just as much, if not more, for Robin. But let’s be real here–the dynamics are just too different for there to be a fair comparison.

I can blab on and on about why I support LuNa, but I’d much rather just share my fic. This story is how I express my love for them, and I hope my feelings reach you all, should you choose to give it a chance. The feedback I’ve received thus far has been so incredible, and it really gives me so much joy to see an active LuNa fandom. So here I am on Tumblr, just hoping to spread the love.

This fic is up to Chapter 9 thus far, and I’ve brought the crew back to Alabasta, Skypiea, and Weatheria. I’m in the process of writing Chapter 10, which I think is about the halfway mark in this story, and I’ll be bringing the crew back to an ancient island…so stay tuned! ;)
