“Attempt By Mob To Make Raid On Royal Palace,” Kingston Whig-Standard. October 31, 1932. Page 1. ---- Police Able to Hold Off Thousands of Unemployed in London ---- AT TRAFALGAR SQUARE ---- Dozen Injured as Orators Address Crowd From Base Nelson Column ---- LONDON, Oct 31— Mounted and foot police held off thousands of unemployed and “hunger marchers" from the King’s Palace and from official residences on Downing Street yesterday after a disturbance at Trafalgar Square.
Booed by unemployed and sympathisers, the police were forced to retreat at least once as the mob attempted to swarm streets leading to Buckingham Palace and Westminster. They were finally forced back into Trafalgar Square, where communistic and unemployed leaders were condemning the Government.
Today's casualty list hardly exceeded ten or twelve persons injured, although ambulances were kept busy for a while, as compared with the sixty or seventy Injured when “hunger marchers" from all parts of the country gathered on Thursday in Hyde Park.
The unemployed will attempt to present a petition before the House of Commons.
Thousand gathered for the mass meeting in Trafalgar Square, stormed entrances to the Mall (leading to Buckingham Palace at its west end) and Whitehall, which street is flanked by Government offices.
Led by a dark, bareheaded man screaming “Smash the Palace windows!" the crowd attempted first to rush Admiralty Arch, which commands the Mall, but failed when the massive iron gates were closed against them. They were pushed back by a police rush.
Whitehall Protected A crowd of many thousands then poured into Whitehall but were met by a stonewall of “bobbies” at the Honrse Guards' Parade (an open space off Whitehall, well known as the scene of the daily guard relief ceremony.) They were driven back.
Fighting broke out just as speech-making from the pedestal of massive Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square had ended. The crowd commandeered a taxi in an attempt to force through police lines. With a mighty surge, a company of bluecoats was driven back but only for a moment. Most of the crowd scurried to safety and the street was cleared within a few minutes, when the "bobbies" charged.
Then rioters closed in again on the isolated police squads of about thirty, who drew batons, appearing engaged in an even fight. Mounted police charged out from under Admiralty Arch and broke up the disturbance. At another place, a policeman was pulled from his horse, which kicked him while he was on the ground and he was removed to an ambulance.
Stones Are Thrown Some atones and sticks were thrown and windows at the head of Northumberland Avenue (a wide thoroughfare descending to the Thames Embankment) were broken. Iron grills in front of the Hotel Victoria were closed and a crowd stood Jjeering and booing liveried servants behind them.
A large automobile, carrying on elderly man and woman, forced its way to the hotel entrance and a mob turned on it, threatening the occupants, who were then escorted by a detail of police, who broke through the mob.
It was not until well after dark that the normal appearance was restored to Trafalgar Square vicinity and traffic was able to make way. By that time the unemployed, escorted by mounted police, had drawn off to the music of fifes and pipes.

2024 Patio Trends: Blending Indoor And Outdoor Spaces
According to Houzz, the demand for outdoor spaces has increased by 50% since 2020, signaling the growing popularity of seamless indoor-outdoor living. This reflects homeowners’ increasing desire to create a harmonious living environment by integrating the natural beauty and open feel of the outdoors with the comfort and aesthetics of indoor places.

New 2024 Patio Cover Trend: The K-BANA™ Manual Roof
The preference towards blending interior and exterior areas emphasizes the significance of design components that establish a coherent whole. A smooth indoor-outdoor transition requires extending flooring materials from interior to outdoor spaces, utilizing complementary or comparable color schemes, and incorporating natural components like stone and wood.
Like Azenco Outdoor’s K-BANA™ Manual louvered Roof, you may match the manual louvered pergola’s floor color to your patio’s. These architectural choices create a harmonious transition between indoor and outdoor surroundings and improve the visual appeal of living areas.
Tumblr media
Additional Features That Makes The Difference
The practicality of these spaces is also greatly improved with the addition of features like  BBQ island kitchen, fire features, fire bars, fireplaces, fire pits, fire grills, fire rings, pizza ovens, BBQ grills, griddles, smokers, cookers, rotisserie, refrigerators, heaters, sinks, patio covers, outdoor accessories and cozy seating. With the addition of these options, living space is expanded beyond the typical boundaries of the house, offering new opportunities for entertainment, relaxation, and taking in the scenery. Retractable screens increase the adaptability of your pergola and make it easier for homeowners to adapt to shifting weather patterns and personal preferences.
Architectural features like motorized louvers enable seamless interaction. Simple transitions between natural light are made possible by Azenco Outdoor’s R-BLADE™ motorized louvered pergola, allowing dynamic interactions between interior and outdoor areas.
Embracing Multifunctionality And Customization In Patio Design
A statistic from the National Association of Realtors (2023) shows how the world of home design is always changing: 64% of homeowners currently want their patio to serve several purposes, a percentage that is predicted to increase by 5% in 2024.
Multifunctional patios are becoming the heart of the home, hosting everything from quiet, sunny meditation sessions to outdoor offices and mostly lively evening soirees under the stars.
Tumblr media
Covered Functional Outdoor Kitchen
Customization is at the heart of outdoor living, a trend shaped by modern homeowners’ interests and lifestyles. Based to the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA), 75% of millennials have expressed an interest in outdoor kitchens in 2023. The number of entertainment areas has risen by 40% since 2021, suggesting an increase in interest for personalized patio spaces that expand beyond functionality.
Tumblr media
Pergola Customization
Patio customization possibilities are endless and adaptable to a wide range of design preferences. Azenco Outdoor’s R-SHADE™ insulated roof pergola provides architectural elegance and shade, while the R-BLADE™ louvered pergola offers a breezy feel. From integrated fire pits to comfy seating areas, each feature can be customized to meet the homeowner’s needs, transforming the patio into a real extension of the home’s living space.
The distinction between indoors and the outdoors is fading away as personalization and customization become more and more significant. Today’s homeowners seek solutions that represent their aesthetic preferences while also meeting the necessities of their specific lives. The opportunity to customize their outdoor buildings and furniture so that each space is not only functional but also a true statement of personal style and vision.

Smart Solutions: Technology Enhances The Patio Experience
With 82% of homeowners interested in outdoor innovation (NKBA, 2023) and a $154.4 billion worldwide smart house industry (Statista, 2023), smart solutions are becoming a growing trend in patio design. From motorized louvers to integrated LED lighting, technological advancements are transforming the way we interact with and enjoy outdoor areas.
Tumblr media
Home Automation Extends To Outdoor Spaces
Outdoor automation takes the lead, providing both convenience and efficiency. Motorized louvers offer personalized shading solutions, allowing homeowners to control sunlight exposure and ventilation to their liking. Integrated LED lighting not only lights the patio area but also provides energy-efficient solutions that help to save costs and promote sustainability.
With the development of smart controls and voice-activated assistants, it is now possible to operate patio amenities such as lighting or heating and cooling elements with simple voice requests or at the touch of a button, adding ease and refinement to outdoor living areas. Smart solutions allow homeowners to take their patio experience to the next level by providing the ideal environment for entertaining guests.
Future-Proofing Your Patio Investment: Durability And Adaptability
Durability and adaptability are crucial factors for homeowners wanting to invest in their outdoor areas in the fast-growing outdoor living product industry, which is estimated to reach $26.8 billion by 2027 (Freedonia Group, 2022). As the business expands, the demand for long-lasting, adaptable patio structures increases. These 2024 patio trends are demonstrated by Azenco Outdoor’s durable, weather-resistant aluminum pergola structures, which not only provide greater longevity but also have a modular design that allows for future customization.
The growing patio trends such as versatility, customization, and smart technology are key. Having spaces that adapt easily to our needs, whether for a peaceful retreat or lively social gatherings is becoming a must-have. With smart tech integration, convenience is at every homeowner fingertips, making outdoor living both sophisticated and sustainable.

hi hi hi ceil! I hope you're doing well. My new year's resolution is to read more books, and I was just wondering if there were any you would rec? I really enjoy the stuff you right, and wondered where you get the inspiration from
hi hi!!!! im doing great actually, i had a nice day :))
oh i have SO many!! these are just my personal favourite and i read a lot of literary fiction and non-fiction and 'weird' lit, so hopefully something on this list sounds fun to you:
glass, irony, and god by anne carson [poetry - although i would recommend absolutely anything by anne carson]
half-light: collected poems 1965-2016 by frank bidart [poetry - honestly one of the poets you MUST read if you love poetry in my opinion - bidart, carson, dionne brand, louise gluck, paul celan, maggie nelson, adrienne rich, rainer maria rilke, t.s eliot, jan zwicky, kahlil gibran]
rings of saturn by w.g. sebald [literary fiction - unnamed narrator takes a walking tour of suffolk, england, and the book is about the encoded meaning found in everything; i love sebald so so much]
house of leaves by mark danielewski [architectural / weird horror; cult classic; spooky and eerie in the best way; high concept, a bit complicated to follow but worth it]
drive your plow over the bones of the dead by olga tokarczuk [fiction / thriller, a bit - read this last month and this book hooked me oh my god, it was so good]
severance by ling ma [apocalyptic / post-apocalyptic - possibly one of my fave books in this genre]
the overstory by richard powers [environmental fiction - multiple different narratives that sometimes converge, sometimes don't; truly had me weepy at points] (also, if you like environmental books, the golden spruce by john vaillant)
the complete cosmicomics by italo calvino [strange literary fiction, short stories - oh these are so delightfully strange and zippy and weird, they feel like eating starbursts or something!!!]
underland by robert macfarlane [non-fiction - this consumed me for days when i read oh my god. all about underground structures, catacombs, caves and caving, mines, radioactive waste disposal, etc]
the lonely city by olivia laing [non-fiction - a sad book, but still hopeful; she has such insightful commentary on art and queer history too]
the library at mount char by scott hawkins [weird fiction - so cool, SUCH a cool fun book oh my god. very interesting premise and executed to perfection]
some other names i'd recommend: eileen myles, maggie nelson, rebecca solnit, and ursula k. leguin (for your scifi/fantasy needs)

I'm trying to make a hybrid CQB and melee mech and I have no idea which mech to choose for that
The new Raleigh variant, the Stortebeker, is literally built for this. You can do it one of two ways:
1. Slap two Main melee weapons in the Flex slots and a powerful loading weapon in the Heavy slot. I recommend the Bolt Thrower which comes with the Raleigh 2 license because it doesn't have the Ordnance tag. In terms of Main Melees, two Charged Blades are never a bad idea but if you have spare LLs available you can grab Nelson 1 for the War Pike. For those with many LLs to spare, instead grab Mourning Cloak 3 and run two Variable Swords. Having the first level of the Duelist talent is functionally a requirement for this build.
2. Slap four Hand Cannons in the Flex slots and a powerful melee weapon in the Heavy slot. The Kinetic Hammer from Raleigh 3 is an obvious choice, but if you're feeling truly decadent you can splash all the way to Balor 3 for the Nanobot Whip. If you've only got two LLs to spare, the GMS standard Heavy Melee Weapon is a perfectly respectable choice. If you're at LL3, applying the Auto-Stabilizing Mounts Core Bonus to your Heavy melee weapon is a very good choice.
The Stortebeker has a trait called Dynamic Reload, which says that if you crit with a non-Auxillary melee weapon, you reload all ranged Loading weapons that weren't fired this turn. (Technically it also works the other way round, but because only one Loading melee weapon actually exists in the core book, this is way less relevant)
The Stortebeker also has Truesilver. Once per fight, it lets you turn a regular hit with a non-loading weapon into a crit. This doesn't change the damage it deals, but it does cause all of an attack's on-crit effects to trigger, including Dynamic Reload.
The basic idea here is that you run on a two-turn cycle. On the first turn, you slam in with your loading ranged weapons, dealing tons of damage. The next turn, you slam in with your melee weapons, fishing for crits to reload your ranged weapons with. This is why Duelist 1, the Variable Sword or an accurized Heavy melee are so powerful - having at least point of Accuracy significantly increases your chance of landing a crit. If you really need your ranged weapons back and you didn't get a crit, you can use Truesilver to convert a regular hit into a crit.
If all else fails, the Stortebeker has two additional options: Hopkins Doctrine, which lets you reload all Loading weapons not fired this turn as a quick action, and your Ult, Truesilver Arsenal, which simply lets you use Truesilver three more times this fight.

On January 26th 1861 Edinburgh heard the sound of the one o'clock gun for the first time.
Walking along Princes Street when the gun goes off separates the locals from the visitors, one group stand in bewilderment, while the Edinburgh populace just walk on as if nothing has happened.
The gun has become an Edinburgh institution, it is fired six days a week from the castles on Mill’s Mount Battery on the north facing side of the castle, but originally it was fired from the Half Moon Battery which faces the Esplanade.
So what's the point of it? Well it's just a tradition nowadays, but it has all to do with the time ball on the top of the Nelson Monument on Calton Hill drops simultaneously at 1 o’clock too, many of you won't even know about this.
At 456 feet above sea level the Monument is highly visible from far off. This led to a 762kg time ball being added to the Monument in 1852 to enable captains of ships moored in the Firth of Forth to set their chronometers for accurate navigation by observing the dropping of the ball at one o'clock Greenwich Mean Time each day.
If you know anything about oor Scottish weather, particularly on the East coast, you will know we sometimes get the haar coming in of the sea. Haar or sea fret is a cold sea fog. It occurs most often on the east coast of England or Scotland between April and September, when warm air passes over the cold North Sea, on days like this you can hardly see a few yards so the mariners had no way of seeing the time ball drop, so it was to have an additional auditory signal, or as they say in Ireland "a big bang!"
Don't tell the people of Edinburgh, but their big bang is not the world's oldest, that honour goes to the Noon Gun from Signal Hill in Cape Town which has been fired since 1806.
Over the years some of the gunners have became almost as famous as the gun itself, Tam the Gun being the most well known, but Shannon the cannon is worth a mention, Bombardier Alison Jones became the first woman to fire the one o’clock gun in 2006.
There is no truth in the rumour that the time of one o’clock was specifically chosen by the Scots, as only the one cannonball each day would minimise the cost of the exercise. 😉

hello! recently, I've made the decision to (with various mounting augmentations from GMS) mount a combat drill on a Caliban, then strap a Nelson's thermal charge to the drill, and give the whole thing enough ramjets and boosters to send any poor chump in front of or behind the whole affair directly to christ-the-buddha.
the question is, and I ask this for liability issues, does this now count as a manned siege projectile? and what restrictions are placed on the use of one of your lovely frames as a ship-to-ship burrowing cruise missile?
eagerly awaiting your reply, as the creative application of a mechanized force multiplier may be necessary in the near future.
yours sincerely, Experimental Pilot/Construct ARCHIVIST.
Hello ARCHIVIST! You’ve put together quite the use case for a Caliban—while we never anticipated it, this kind of creativity among our end users is something we’re always excited to see!
According to our legal team, if that chassis is maneuverable in space to the point it doesn’t need external engine mounts, it would constitute not a siege missile but rather a boarding craft or bomber, depending on the specifics of the paperwork you need to fill out.
Because of this, their only recommendation to stay in-line with current regulations is to ensure whatever crazy SOB you ask to pilot such a Caliban isn’t forced to do so. As long as they’re a willing pilot, you should legally be in the clear.
We look forward to hearing how it goes!

This morning, Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex had the honor of being welcomed to visit the Mount Currie Community Centre on the traditional territory of the Lil’wat Nation. After a meeting Prince Harry and Chief Dean Nelson had last November, the Chief invited the couple to visit their land and speak with Chief Gélpcal of the Lil’wat Nation as well as other tribal counselors and members of their community. The couple learned about their wheelchair basketball program, created as an inclusive adaptive sport to bring young people together. The Duke and Chief Nelson joined students and young adults in an exciting game of wheelchair basketball, cheered on by government officials, members of the Invictus community and partners. Upon their arrival, The Duke and Duchess received a tradition welcome and were presented symbolic gifts for their family including a traditional basket which takes over a year to make and a hand carved cedar art piece symbolizing strength. The couple were humbled to be invited and extend their deepest gratitude to Chief Nelson, Chief Gélpcal and the people of the Lil’wat Nation for their generous hospitality and kindness.

Alright I'm done with these "how do you play X character in D&D?" "how do you play Y concept in D&D?" especially after the ogl bullshit
HERE'S HOW TO PLAY SEKIRO IN LANCER
» Sekiro // WOLF « Outlaw, LL6 [ SKILL TRIGGERS ] ACT UNSEEN OR UNHEARD (+6), SPOT (+4), SURVIVE (+4), TAKE SOMEONE OUT (+6) [ GEAR ]
[ TALENTS ] Exemplar 3, Skirmisher 3, Duelist 2, Combined Arms 1 [ LICENSES ] HORUS GORGON 2, SSC ATLAS 3, IPS-N NELSON 1 [ CORE BONUSES ] Full Subjectivity Sync, Auto-Stabilizing Hardpoints [ MECH ] « KUSABIMARU » HORUS GORGON H:2 A:6 S:0 E:0 SIZE:2 STRUCTURE:4/4 HP:19/19 ARMOR:0 STRESS:4/4 HEAT:0/5 REPAIR:4/4 ATK BONUS:3 TECH ATK:1 LTD BONUS:0 SPD:7 EVA:16 EDEF:12 SENS:8 SAVE:15 [ WEAPONS ] FLEX MOUNT: KRAUL RIFLE MAIN MOUNT: War Pike MAIN MOUNT: TERASHIMA BLADE // Auto-Stabilizing Hardpoints [ SYSTEMS ] JÄGER KUNST II, Mimic Mesh, Rapid Burst Jump Jet System
This build is focused on using the Gorgon's Gaze trait in order to take a stupid amount of reactions each turn, specifically with Duelist lvl2 and Jager Kunst 2 to reduce incoming damage and force sword clashes (which you'll win more often than not with your +6 agility)
Jump Jets give you high mobility, Kraul Rifle lets you hook to distant enemies and pull yourself to them, and Mimic Mesh allows you to close gaps when trying to defend a specific ally (such as our sweet boy Kuro)
Once engaged use Exemplar lvl3 to challenge your target to a duel to the death, and switch Terashima Blade into Lord's Stance so you can start deflecting bullets and knocking enemies to the ground
If the enemy tries to back away from you follow after them with your Prosthetic Spear (War Pike) with an Overwatch reaction
Remember that enemies who roll 1 or 2 trying to hit the Gorgon immediately get posture broken (stunned)
Once the enemy is stunned finish them off by switching your Terashima Blade into Troll's Stance and dealing high armor penetrating damage, following it up with a Jager Kunst Fatal Clash for a proper Shinobi Execution

There are many reasons to convert your garage into a kitchen. Especially if it’s attached to a garage you rarely use. It can become just another place to put your crap. So why not convert that space into something that can be used to cook outdoors year round??
You’ll be able to create more square footage in your home and maybe even have a dining room. If your original kitchen was too small, you’ll be able to expand your work area and create the kitchen you’ve always dreamed of having. Once you’ve decided you want to turn your garage into a kitchen there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind as you go about your project. Here are a few tips.
Understand the Basics of Your Conversion
Make a list of all the things you currently keep in your garage. You’ll want to find homes for all that stuff. If you are storing stuff that could easily be stored in a shed and you have one, then it’s just a matter of moving that to the shed.
If you don’t have a shed, you might consider renting a storage unit or building a shed on your property. There are many big box stores that sell storage shed kits that will suit your project nicely. You’ll also want to understand the total cost of your conversion. You’ll want to research how to finance home improvement because you’ll most likely be getting a loan to complete this project.
You’ll also want to research any building codes or permits you may need to obtain through the city, county, or HOA you belong to. There may be restrictions you aren’t aware of and could cause you heartache and more expense if you don’t follow the rules.
Look at Your Load Bearing Walls
If your garage and kitchen share a wall and you are considering knocking out the wall between them, you’ll want to review your building plans to make sure you aren’t removing or damaging a load bearing wall.
A load bearing wall is one that is critical to holding the whole structure up and in place. If you happen to remove the wrong parts, you could risk part of your home collapsing. Most homes have plans that have been submitted to the city or county offices and can be reviewed.
If you had your home built, you’ll probably already have a set of plans that were used to build it. You’ll want to review it with a contractor to ensure you’re removing or changing the right parts to a load bearing wall.
Don’t Forget About Insulation
Most newer homes have well insulated garages, but there are still a few homes around that don’t. You’ll want to be sure to get the right R-rating insulation to keep your new kitchen insulated from the cold outdoors. Depending on where you live, you’ll need to research what R-value insulation is appropriate.
Getting the wrong insulation means a colder room and higher heating bills. Not to mention the possibility of water pipes breaking. Your kitchen will have plumbing fixtures that will need to be protected.
Check the Windows
If your garage has windows, you’ll want to consider upgrading them to good solid double pane windows. If you’re going to be installing windows, you’ll want to review where your electrical wires run so you don’t end up having to reroute or cut lines. You don’t always have to buy new windows to get what you need. Many construction outlets will have returns and craigslist is a great place to search for the right window at the right price.
Decide on Kitchen Appliances
Are you going to replace all your kitchen appliances? Perhaps you just bought that new dishwasher a year ago and it still runs like a dream. Consider smaller appliances like a sink disposal and trash compactor when you’re planning your layout.
All of these types of appliances will need to be situated to best utilize the existing structure. Perhaps your kitchen drains are easily accessible once you tear down the wall between the garage and the kitchen. If this is the case, then you’ll want to situate your sink where you are able to plug directly into the existing drains.
This saves a bunch of time and money from having to route new drains to the exterior. Your water faucets will probably be the same, too.
Don’t Forget the Time Factor
When you’re planning this conversion, consider that at some point, your kitchen won’t be available to use. It could take a few weeks to get everything in place to work again. If you don’t have a plan for this time, you might be in hot water with your family, let alone uncomfortable yourself.
This doesn’t have to happen. You can consider working in stages, so that each stage has a short period of time that the kitchen isn’t used and then it’s usable again. Repeat this until you’ve finished the project. Or you may consider putting your family up in a rental while you finish the job. If you’re able to afford that, it’s a viable option. Whatever the outcome, don’t forget that at some point, both your garage and your kitchen won’t be usable.
If you aren’t using your garage for its intended purpose and you’ve decided to make use of that space to extend your home and build a kitchen, you’ll need to remember these tips to help you create the best experience for your project and for your family.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a garage typically included in the square footage of a house? In most cases, the square footage of your home includes only livable spaces. So, a garage would only count toward the square footage of a home if it is finished (with flooring, walls, heat, and electricity) and has been legally converted into a living space.
Can I convert my garage without a permit? The answer depends on where you live and the scope of your project, so check with your local zoning department before making any changes. If you are making structural or electrical changes, moving or adding plumbing, or installing HVAC, you will likely need a permit.
Will converting my garage add value to my home?Again, the answer depends on where you live and what type of space you are building. If your garage conversion is properly permitted and performed professionally, it can add interest and valuable square footage to your property. If, however, your neighborhood has limited street parking or your home has limited storage, a converted space might negatively impact the value of your home.
How much does it cost to convert a garage? On average, it will cost between $5,000 and $26,000 to convert an unfinished garage into a livable space. If you are installing new floors, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing, that cost could climb to $50,000 or more depending on the project and the size of the space.
