Just got some new "Rings of Power" spoilers today this time from the Daily Rings of Power Twitter account and detailing more on the main Númenor storyline for season 2!!! :D Also confirmed a few of the new cast members' roles.
I'm linking to the Twitter thread in the comments but they confirmed that the main Númenor storyline is setting up the Faithful versus the King's Men which starts everything that leads to the downfall. This storyline has been filming a lot too starting in last fall and now filming again, which also lines up with what Calam Lynch said about when he was filming which also goes along with how a lot of us have been speculating that he's actually playing Elendil's son Anárion instead of Celeborn so this seems to hint more that's who he's playing or someone connected to them. Plus there had already been speculation with him and showing him being part of the Faithful while Isildur is still in Middle Earth. Lloyd Owen also posted about how they've been doing nightshoots for the past couple weeks, though Morfydd also talked about it too and both the Númenor and Eregion sets are on the same massive connected set. Elendil's group too will also be there and shown at how they're torn between the two growing factions.
So of the new cast Will Keen and William Chub are playing two opposing members of each side, with the latter being a High Priest of the Faithful. I'm really looking forward to this as it's setting up what's to come in a later season when Sauron eventually makes his way back and the downfall/sinking comes.

nurr you have to tell me about all the costuming atrocities on ROP. (i have it all blocked on tumblr so i don't see anything.) SPILL. I MUST KNOW. ahahahahahaha.
So the most important thing to start with here, and the thing you must always keep in mind when discussing RoP costuming, is that the show had an enormous budget. This show was the most expensive show ever made. This show made the budgets of blockbuster Hollywood films look like community theatre budgets. It was hammered into every promotional piece, every marketing ad, every talking point - this show was so expensive.
Which makes the costuming all that more atrocious. Because I can look past some meh costumes. I can understand that there are a lot of different places to put the money. But when you have $60 mil an episode, you can't complain when people scrutinize the costuming.
Putting the rest under a cut since I'm going to post images too.
Wait wait hang on in the process of looking up screencaps to get good quality photos I came across this article and incredibly it is not satire.
Morfydd Clark, who portrays Galadriel in Amazon's epic fantasy series, recently spoke with Empire about her character's outfits, and about the fans who have taken on the daunting task of recreating them. Clark says that The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power's costume designer made a special effort to keep the series' costume designs complicated enough to challenge cosplayers: "Kate Hawley, the costume designer, was like, 'I want to make it really difficult for them. I want it to be a real challenge.'"
It is absolutely laughable that any of these costumes would challenge cosplayers. Anyway. Back to the discussion. (ID's in the images.)
The costumes look cheap.
The costumes don't look like they belong to distinct cultures.
The costumes don't look like people wear them on a daily basis - they aren't outfits, they're costumes.
The costumes look like they're made of cheap fabrics you can find at a craft store. They are all pretty thin and plain. There is very little layering to create a sense of "these are clothes people wear every day", there is very little texture with the use of different types of fabric or embroidery or other touches like that. Anytime texture is added, it feels like "texture=dirty and rough=poor" (see, harfoots and southlanders).
Typically when representing a variety of cultures, you should be able to look at a piece and basically tell which group it's from. If we look at the LotR movies, the difference between the elves and the hobbits and the Rohirrim and the dwarves are all different. Even Rohan and Gondor, while both cultures of men, have distinctions in color and motifs. The dwarves are harsh lines while the elves are curving, organic, leafy designs. The hobbits are like English gentlefolk with vests and the kingdoms of men have long tunics. In RoP, it's like the designers said, "Greco-Roman? Greco-Roman. Cool. Let's do that." FOR EVERYONE. Nearly every silhouette for all women is "one piece long dress gathered with a belt." Every man is "robes."
And costumes shouldn't be costumes - they should be outfits. They should be functional outfits that you would look at and say, "Yes, I can see that someone would wear that when doing the role they are in." Or recognizing that there is wear and tear because people don't buy new clothes every day. It should make sense when you see it, and not draw you out of the story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let's start with Gil-Galad because he was one of the first people I looked at and said "what???" This gold fabric looks basically like something I see at JoAnns anytime I walk through. The criss-cross vest pattern does have some embroidery to it (it looks like dwarven runes??) but the way it's set on his chest to me is reminiscent of straps on a backpack. The embroidery looks sharp and linear, while the embellishment is circular with pearl-like beading so the texture that is there is off. And then we have the "look it's Roman do you get the classical Roman background?" laurel crown.
Next to him is Elrond who, while really coming alive through a great actor, has a pretty humdrum costume. The cloak and the tunic look like they're made from the same material. It's lightweight with a printed swirly pattern on it - presumably this is to provide easy texture, but I don't think the elves had invented printed fabric yet. The only embellishment is the fringe/feather thing on the shoulder, which looks weird, I'll be honest. The feathers look like they're made of plastic, and the fringe isn't repeated anywhere else in the outfit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Want to see some atrocious armor now? This armor is so confusing (and also ugly). On the left we have the Numenorians, and on the right we have the "special traveling to Valinor" armor (yes, that's a thing). Let's start with the elves. It looks like it's been made with a 3D printer. It doesn't look like metal, it looks like cheap plastic. It's super impractical for fighting, because those shoulder pieces would catch any swords and keep them close the body instead of letting them glance off. They wear skirts underneath so better hope no one tries to cut you below the waist.
The Numenorians have this whole scale motif going on throughout the costumes, presumably because they are an island nation. Okay, whatever. So why do they have horse hair helmets? They don't care about horses. They care about ships and the sea. And they've got the sun motif on their neck plate along with horses. So, all over the place. The matte white armor is an...interesting...choice. And the weird under scale shirt, with the addition of the white quilted shirt under that - it's confusing, it looks strange, and your eyes aren't really sure what's happening there. They also don't have any armor covering their lower half, and their helmets will fall off at any point.
Tumblr media
Here we have the Romans Numenorians in their togas and printed fabrics. Like, seriously. Plain robe/tunic things that are functionally togas, with an actual printed fabric sash. I would not look at this still and think "fantasy" or "Middle-earth" or literally anything but "Roman drama."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Interestingly, here we can see with the dwarves a similar scale pattern to their armor. And in the wide shot, we see these draped garments that wouldn't look out of place in Numenor or the southlands. These background dwarves have a lot of circular motifs, while when we focus on Durin he has the more angular patterns we are used to from LotR.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Celebrimbor showed up early and had, to me, an outfit that was almost right. You see how it has different textures, different embroideries, it feels layered and real. But it's so not the right outfit for a guy who is known as a world reknowned craftsman. We do see him in his metalworking outfit, which is...different. It just has so many metal elements that I can't help but think will get too hot while you're at a forge! Also the stretchy shirt material is very similar to the material of Galadriel's dress in that scene and Elrond's tunic, so..there's that.
Honestly I saved a bunch more screencaps and had plans to go into more detail about Galadriel's various outfits and Miriel's various outfits (the only two people who got costume changes) but I just want to be done with this post so here we are.
I recommend checking out Lana Marie's youtube channel because she goes through a lot more of this from a more knowledgeable perspective.

#clearthelist April 2018: Now I Know My Language Level
Welcome to my latest language learning update through #clearthelist. Clear the List is a support and accountability blog group sharing monthly language learning goals. I have got LOTS OF GOALS this months, so let's get going.
What Happened in April 2018?
First of all: I went to Wales!
My big April goal was Book a day in Wales: SMASH SUCCESS PARTY, I went and attended a 2 day Easter Course in Wales in early April. You may have heard about it on the podcast I recorded there, which I was so happy with. The course I attended was awesome, so great to spend 2 days in the classroom with others who are also at my level in the language.
Talking of level, I have more good news. I chose to sign up for the course at intermediate level (“Canolradd” or roughly B1). I was not convinced, thinking I’m actually a little lower. But having taken a short self-assessment test, I figured I might as well be ambitious and downgrade if necessary. Turns out, I didn’t have to downgrade.
After 2.5 years of self-study I now know B1 level Welsh! This is so exciting, because I’ve never 100% self-studied a language to this level before. I still enjoy learning the Welsh language so much, and have a long way to go.
If you’re also a self-studier, see if there’s a top-up course like this available in your target language. They are great fun, and the tutor knew exactly which parts learners at our level are struggling with the most.
German Course Creation
I am currently working on a new German course. A lot of my working time was spent working with this story and creating resources for our students. German Uncovered in collaboration with Olly Richards from I Will Teach You a Language, and we're coming close to opening the course for the first time.
The Fluent Show
On the podcast, there were some great episodes during April, but the most exciting one has to be the episode Welsh is Not English.
I had never tried this “radio documentary” style of editing and was so proud of the result. Give the show a listen and subscribe for more episodes if you like it. The Fluent Show is now available on even more platforms including Spotify and TuneIn Radio.
Most “Fun Fact” of The Month
Welsh has 50 ways of saying yes or no. I can correctly use about 1.5 of them. Sigh.
How Did It Go With My April Goals?
In addition to the 2 day course, I also had some other goals:
Have 3 natural conversations with my tutor/exchange partner and listen carefully: Ohh gosh, oh my, I missed the one session I’d booked and never even rescheduled. So that’s 0 out of 3.
In April I had several conversations in Welsh while travelling there. I actually tried to use Welsh in 3 or 4 shops and restaurants, and couldn’t find any server who actually knew the language. So my conversations were with enthusiasts, i.e. all the people you heard on the podcast. Thank you so much to Gavin and Steffan, Morfydd and Janet, for speaking Welsh to me.
Practice Welsh listening by playing with no-subtitle TV, and reviewing the Pigion podcast vocab before I listen: I didn’t watch any good TV, I need to stop even setting this goal as it’s just not what I get up to right now. But I listened to 2 Pigions and made good use of the vocab supplied with the show.
Write a longer Welsh poem and continue playing around with different poetry formats: I managed one longer poem, but it was supremely nonsensical. Well, better than nothing, right?
Finish my easy reader novel and read all of the latest Lingo Newydd magazine Yep! I finished Bywyd Blodwen Jones, my first ever book in Welsh! Also did well with the magazine, which continues to be such a joy in my house. Great to add a bit of Welsh over breakfast.
Daily Contact Goal
In April, I logged 19 days of contact with the Welsh language. My most used language apps were ApGeiriaduron, Duolingo, SmartCards+, and Clozemaster. Followed by Instagram and Twitter.
Goals For May 2018
Sometimes there’s nothing special or grand to be aiming for, and those are the hardest times to keep going. It feels like “another month of the same”, without that fizzy excitement of a fixed goal.
I find that my goals get more exciting when I share them with others, and when I join a group. So it’s time to search for accomplices.
They’re also more exciting when they are a challenge, so I made sure to include challenging things in the Speaking and Writing sections for May.
Listening
Complete at least 2 intensive listens to the Pigion podcast This podcast publishes a vocab list for each show, so intensive means I’ll read through the vocab, add some words to my lists, and then listen until I feel like I’ve understood 75%. This is natural, full speed, native content. No shame in not understanding it all.
Reading
Start reading Ffenestri or Sgwp I bought two books for learners when I was in Wales, and then I got stuck because I can’t decide which one to start with. Goal: Pick one and just bloody start.
Read poetry in Welsh! Great job writing wonky poems on Instagram, Kerstin. But it’s time that I expanded my education here and learnt to appreciate what the language is like when used by a true expert. I love poetry more and more each day, and will
Speaking
Have at least 6 (!) short conversations in Welsh only This month I’m aiming to increase the frequency, not the length of my exchanges. I’ll take any opportunity from tutor sessions, friends, exchanges, and group chats using the Say Something in Welsh Slack group. By short, I mean 15 minutes (but you may make your own definition of “short”).
Look for a book club I mentioned new books above, and I am going to hit the forums at Saysomethingin and social media to see if anyone would like to have a book club meeting to chat about what we’re reading.
Writing
Write 2 language poems, and more considered ones. I have proven that I can write wacky, slightly nonsensical poetry in the Welsh language.
Anything Else?
Note to self: I need to start getting organised and booking my accommodation for the National Eisteddfod in Cardiff nice and early. I'm planning to volunteer again this year, which means a chance to speak and hear lots of Welsh.
I don’t have any goals in a language other than Welsh, but I do have something special and linguistic. to work on. I am reading several books that will help me with my general understanding and appreciation of language, and the English language in particular.
The first one is Getting Through by Roger Kreuz and Richard Roberts, a sequel to their book Becoming Fluent, which I LOVED and reviewed here on the blog (read the review).
There are two poetry books, too: Lifesaving Poems by Anthony Wilson,Collected Poems by Carol Ann Duffy. I’m also interested in finding more great French, German, and Spanish poetry. Great way to discover new worlds in my existing languages!
How was your month?
Is there anything you’re curious about? What did you learn in April? Leave a comment below or join #clearthelist to share your own language learning journey.
