#mod meme's character tips i guess
Note
Ugh, I wish I had fun stereotype-breaking characters to share. But my D&D characters are either straight-laced clerics who keep the rest of the party in line/alive, or whatever weird idea appealed to me at the time (including a kid raised by bears who transforms into a bear, a sea witch whose contact with an eldritch evil made her cloudcuckoolandery, and a plant thing that can wild shape into giants or dinosaurs). The middle ground is where all the stereotypes get broken.
Nah, weird ideas and non-stereotypical characters can totally go together, you just have to elaborate a bit! For example, take the bear kid. The two obvious classes are beast barbarian and druid (assuming they're not a shifter in which case they could be literally anything). Chipper, innocently aggressive barb kid who's never actually angry, just following Bear Mom's example? Completely un-spiritual druid who approaches civilization with all the clumsy delight of Child Discovering New Thing? Those meet the brief and break the stereotypes.
Or, y'know, give your next bard the straight-laced cleric personality. They get Cure Wounds too, y'know!

so co-mod and i have played this game a few times with the cpds characters, "guess who but with vibes." (insp by this video) each of us will pick one character and ask the other yes/no questions about their "vibes" to determine via process of elimination which cpds character the other has picked!
we've played this a few times, but i thought i would share the first round we ever played, and maybe you can play along? (we played by having a full list of the characters up and striking them out as questions eliminated them.)
we originally played this going back and forth with questions, but for readability's sake, i've separated his character and mine, so you'll only see questions and responses about one character at a time. i've also edited this to fix typos as well as condensing and eliminating some of the chatty bits.
first character
L: would this person post minion memes unironically?
R: yes i think so
L: for reference, i took out 3. would your character, after walking into a door, deny it ever happened?
R: no
L: they wouldn't deny it?
R: yeah they wouldn't deny it, i don't think
L: ooh tricky. i took down two. i just feel like i'm making the wrong decisions here. would this person talk during a movie?
R: ahh i'm conflicted about this. i think yes.
L: two down
R: oh no that's seven down for you??
L: wait but if you were conflicted...
R: you're almost there??
L: i'm doubting my final two ngl but we'll see. we'll just have to see if i'll have to start over from scratch or something. in the video once both have guessed wrong, they reveal who and figure out where they went wrong. if you've picked jonathan i'm rebelling. would your character pick flowers from a neighbour's garden?
R: i think so. yes.
[L was ready to make a guess, but we decided that you can't ask a question and guess on the same turn.]
L: can i tell u my guess now
R: okay submit your guess :)
L: is it max
R: no :(
L: aw man. who was it?
R: mine was annie
L: aw MAN. i'm pretty sure it was the movie bit that did her in
R: oh yeah i was conflicted on that. but i felt like on balance she probably would talk during a movie. not in theatres though just like at home lol
L: oooh good point. i actually did start thinking jonathan might. i was like hm well i didn't think jonathan would but also he might...
R: hold on i want to know who did you eliminate for the minion memes one
L: ha ha um trevor robert and chris
R: you were very right ha ha
second character
L: ur turn
R: would they break into a petting zoo to pet the animals?
L: no i don't think so
R: conflicted because there are some people i'm borderline on if i should cross them off for that lol i'm just like i could see them doing this but i don't think they would just do it spontaneously on their own. unlike Certain Others. you're still ahead of me, i knocked off two. would this person ride a bike to work? regularly, i mean.
L: no. i think literally the only person this would eliminate is jonathan (jokes)
R: lol well i've eliminated two so i guess our feelings differ. i hope the person i eliminated was not the person you are thinking of! maybe this is a bad question but it's all i could think of: would this person smoke?
L: hmm no
R: was sort of hoping you'd say yes :/
L: sorry
R: i still have a whole three people left in the mix ha ha would your person enjoy a jane austen novel?
L: yes
R: i have it like 75/25 rn
L: okay u can ask me another question or just guess, whatever's fine with u ha ha
R: okay... is it sandra
L: yes
R: YES
L: gg
R: gg!!!! that was hard!
L: was it jane austen that tipped ya off?
R: of course it was, i was trying to eliminate robert tbh
L: ha ha i'm surprised robert stayed in for so long
R: and annie has not struck me as a jane austen enjoyer, but i thought Maybe

Kacey is a Hellcat that uses he/him pronouns! He’s beginner friendly! They are a fast track spirit which means they will be taken down September 15th! Learn more about fast track spirits here!
Appearance: Kacey is a small black cat, similar in appearance to a Devon Rex. He is a small cat, reaching 10 inches in length, not including his tails. Knobly, appearing to be all skin and bones. He has four eyes, two gold on either side. First set are where a normal cat’s eyes are and below that and slightly offset are two smaller golden eyes. He has a soft, round face, however there is another secret. While not noticeable while talking and living life, when he opens his mouth to attack, his teeth are easily 8 inches long and 2 inches thick. Somehow, like an animator who was going for drama rather than realism, they all appear to fit inside of his mouth, even though we all know that there is no way in hell they should, those teeth are bigger than his head. Still, they exist the way that they are.
Tumblr media
Thankfully, all 6 of Kacey’s paws have regular sized claws. Yes, you read that right, 6 paws, for Kacey has an extra set of legs. They are built like his front legs, lanky and without the large haunches of the hind legs. Kacey’s rear is slightly wider than that of a normal cat’s, but for good reason: he also has three tails. The two on the edges are that of a normal cat’s, soft and sleek. However the middle tail is thickly scaled and tipped with a scorpion’s stinger.
Personality: Kacey is the fursona of most books “dark and brooding” type characters. Despite being 17 inches long, and 8 inches tall, Kacey has the appearance and aura of a much larger creature, one that demands the attention of the room. He carries himself with such dignity that despite his small stature, I often find myself moving out of his way physically, without even realising that he was there to begin with. At heart he is a softie, but he would never show it. He likes it when things work out as planned and get easily annoyed when people don’t follow through on what they say they will do. He holds great pride for himself and those he places trust in and thus comes off as nagging and a harsh critic. But at the end of the day, as long as everyone tries their best, he truly enjoys spending time with people. You’d never guess but he loves jokes, puns and memes. He may never respond to them, but in his heart, he really enjoys them. Of course, much in the same way your dad might, he will always use memes in the wrong way at the worst times, but unlike your dad, he knows what he’s doing and is doing it on purpose. Despite all that I’ve said about him, when using telepathy, though he does not speak any real language, Kacey has a really delicate way of speaking. Almost as though he were constantly talking in italics and speaking of flowers, constantly.
Species Info: Technically a demon and not related to “true” hellcats at all, Kacey prefers the term “hellcat” as it has cooler connotations than “demon” does. Each member of this race bears a unique appearance unlike any other, so it is hard to find family resemblance. Each child is born with the knowledge of a human 2-3 year old. They know how to communicate, survive, and basic skills that also can include anything from art to music to swordplay to althectisicm skills. As such, you’d think that family ties aren’t that strong since they are born being able to live on their own. However, this just makes family ties stronger as it’s a choice to stay and live and grow with the demons you are related to.
Past: He grew up in a family of 5, each member taking a different form. His mother is an elephant-esc creature, his father that of a grotesque centaur, and his two younger brothers a dragon/roc/cow creature and a snake. Despite their far differing appearances, this was fairly normal for many of the same species and had no problems living together. When Kacey was around the equivalent of 19 years old, he took a strong interest in fire and chaos based energy work and witchcraft. He spent the next 15 years studying and exploring the world to meet people and learn their opinions and expertise. Though he may be 31 in human year equivalent, he still has several hundred years laid out ahead of him, with a couple hundred behind him.
Tumblr media
Current Lifestyle: Kacey spends his morning offering his assistance and expertise to those who teach witchcraft. While the craft as a whole does not interest him, he still tries to offer help where he can. He has no place to stay, but often retires to Fox’s fireplace which is lit in the winter, and warm in the summer. He is not entirely fireproof, but human fires won’t leave a scratch on him and is just warm enough to remind him of home.
Companionship: Kacey is most interested in helping out his companion in their life endeavors, though mostly teach them about what he’s learned about chaos magic, energy work, and the strength of fire. If he bonds with someone who has no interest in such fields, it is their loss, but he won’t turn down companionship for differing interests.
Communication: Telepathy, astral speaking, tarot Kacey does not speak english or any other spoken language, but uses a very complicated series of emotions, intent, meaning and images to get his point across.
From Kacey: “Greetings. I look forward to meeting you all and getting to know you over the next month.”
Likes: Chemicals that make fire fun colors, perfect circles made on the first try, fresh made bread, pies, when all goes according to plan
Dislikes: Bathing, raw meat (some fish is okay), being coddled for being a small cat, trying to clean his teeth
Hobbies: Creating things (be it robots, businesses, or writing a book), working on his own craft, hanging out with friends, video games
Magic: Chaos, fire based, loose energy work
Songs: Powerwolf - Incense and Iron Mia Valie - American Dream Beast in Black - Beast in Black Sabaton - Night Witches
Friends You Might Know: Fook the Brimstone Elf Scorpio the Scorp Man  Ru the Hell Griffin
Vessel: “Up to you”

The Rise of the Highly Unlikely Twitch Streamer
“If I’d known at the start of this year that I’d be paying a queer artist in Germany to draw a horse wearing clothes for Twitch, I’d have been like: what the fuck is going on?” says British musician Shura. The horse in question has become a regular character in Shura’s lockdown life, a shared joke that grew from a story told to fans on Twitch, where she now streams three times a week.
The streaming platform, which emerged in 2011, is still mostly known as a place for gamers. But during lockdown, creatives from music, comedy, TV and so-called “variety streamers” have taken to Twitch to share their talents and engage with fans.
Back in spring, Shura was in New York when festival performances and tour shows for her latest record forevher were abruptly cancelled. Other musicians began regular Instagram Live gigs – many unpaid. Shura did a few, but: “It was not satisfying – you’re literally performing to a wall.”
Instead, she played videogames to relax. “I knew what Twitch was, but never understood why you would want to watch anyone on Twitch,” she says.
But while researching The Last of Us Part II, Shura browsed Twitch. She came across American gamer ChellOAG and loved her stream: “I was like, maybe I should do this? There were a lot of videogame references in my first record, so by chance I set myself up really well to become a gaming musician on Twitch!”
Her followers and subscribers are, she estimates, 95 percent prior fans of her music. Twitch has offered Shura a surprising way to forge a closer bond with them: “It was like making this giant sofa on the internet where you can hang out and still have some connection with your fanbase.”
While the music industry has focused on mailing lists to reach fans, Shura feels she’s found a more effective route through Twitch and the associated Discord server many streamers use as a place for followers to chat: “It’s been weird to realise there are these other tools that musicians have previously neglected.” She’s also determined to create a welcoming environment for fans in the gaming world, which still has pockets of misogyny, racism and homophobia: “It’s important to make this safe space where people who are queer can go and not have shit thrown at them.”
Shura has done some music streams – on the one-year anniversary of foreveher’s release, she played demos, did a Q&A and piano performance. Yet even while gaming, she’s found streaming replicates the on-stage experience: “You get that same adrenaline rush. You’re performing – if you want people to enjoy themselves, you have to find ways of engaging beyond the game.”

Comedians also saw their schedules wiped during lockdown. Scottish comedian Limmy has streamed for years, but announced his retirement from TV to focus on Twitch. Others joined him there – Josie Long and Richard Herring, while Bilal Zafar has thousands watching him in character as a PES football manager.
Sean Morley, standup and co-host of Mandatory Redistribution Party podcast, also moved comedy onto Twitch during lockdown. At first: “I had friends do guest parts, I’d write loose plots – like a comedy play.”
But after committing to twice-weekly streaming, he realised Twitch demanded a different approach. He introduced more audience interaction to two solo streams, Meme Machine and King Morl, and recently started an interactive game, Escape the North, with comics in Manchester.
“The premise of Meme Machine is: I’m making an image for Twitter, I want to go viral, but I have no ideas,” Morley explains. “So I ask people to donate ideas, then we make memes based on that.”
Fans have immersed themselves in unexpected ways. Morley plays Creative Commons-licensed music during streams – fans made their own albums containing shared jokes and posted them on Creative Commons for Morley to find. The Meme Machine community also received a commission from composer Ben Gaunt for a video to be played at a Nottingham University symposium. “It’s one of the weirdest things I’ve ever seen, let alone made,” says Morley.
King Morl is a little different. It uses an existing game, Crusader Kings II, but the audience can modify the world. “We let the chat choose a long-form objective. They learned early on that there were non-human characters in the game. They all said: make the pope a bear.”
Months-long storylines developed. Morley uploaded past streams to YouTube so anyone could catch up: “Even when there was 30 hours to get through, people started doing it.”
King Morl recently had its cinematic finale where a bear was finally crowned pope. “People were quite emotional – they said it helped them through a really horrible year. It was sweet. You can’t get close to that vibe with an hour-long [stand-up] show.”

Claire Lim (AKA Wee Claire) on Twitch. Photo: courtesy of Claire Lim
It’s this collaborative, community aspect that Scottish TV presenter Claire Lim loves most about streaming. Lim, known as Wee Claire on Twitch, has presented for the BBC and NME and joined Twitch in 2018. She started streaming videogames, but soon tried new formats, chatting and playing interactive games – guessing someone’s age based on their teenage crush or drawing followers’ portraits.
When she got a PC, she decided to make slicker TV-style formats: “It’s a big learning curve in terms of production, but I started to go: what can I do that’s always been a dream in my little nerdy head?”
Lim now hosts various chat shows, including the Top 10 List of All Lists and How I Met Your Streamer. There’s also the Wee Marbles Federation (“by far the most popular show”), a WWE-influenced programme that layers soap opera-style storylines onto a game called Marbles.
The pandemic encouraged Lim to learn new skills – she’s improved her editing and branched into music-making, creating a Christmas EP with input from her community, the Wee Squad. “People come to watch me, but it takes on a life of itself,” Lim says. “It’s 50 percent community, 50 percent streamer. The Wee Squad have helped me through the pandemic – economically in terms of subbing [subscribing], but also in terms of belief. The power of community is incredible.”
Like Shura, Lim also works hard to create a welcoming space for fans: “I have friends from the LGBTQ+ community, different backgrounds, ethnically and otherwise, so for me it’s important that my stream reflects my values.” Moderators (Lim highlights her “dad mod” DW who’s been with her since the start) uphold these values.
While streaming helps Lim hone presenting skills, it could one day be a career in itself. “I’ve had struggles trying to get agents and producers into what I’m doing on Twitch,” Lim says. “But if you’re looking to be an entertainer, be hugely creative and not just play games… I do think Twitch could be an alternative route. As long as you know that it’s just as hard.”
Morley has also turned Twitch into an income-maker. While streaming twice a week doesn’t equal his normal comedy earnings and there’s a battle with the algorithm to be seen, the in-stream tipping function mirrors “pay what you want”, his favoured comedy payment model. “You try to make people feel they are wilfully contributing to something they want to succeed,” Morley says. “Twitch has that from the start.”
Unlike Spotify and Apple Music, “the culture around Twitch is to support creators,” Shura says. “I’m also making significantly more from my merch than if I wasn’t on Twitch. It does help support all the other avenues at a time when your job basically doesn’t exist.”
All three artists plan to continue streaming when their industries return to normal. There’s also shared hope that Twitch will continue to diversify beyond gaming. Lim’s been watching more music streamers, such as The Village Ruse, while Shura’s given Ladyhawke tips on setting up her own channel.
Lim says: “There are so many amazing people on Twitch that are way funnier, more creative, dynamic and interesting than people I see on television. Twitch is a more diverse place if you go and find it. It’s not perfect, but the more people that come to it, the better it will be.”

Galloping Out of Town, but Not Out of Our Hearts
Or so, I’d like to think.   And I have to do this before anyone else tries to steal my thunder.
Tumblr media
That’s right, my sweet children and beautiful city-- this is not a “goodbye” but rather “see you again”, because life is unpredictable.  For the past six months or so, I’ve been struggling with balancing a 40 hour work week, modding, and trying to take care of myself-- as seen first by me mysteriously vanishing in terms of mod presence, but also when I dropped my characters to lessen my load, yet didn’t start becoming more prominent as a mod once more.  I openly admit to being a little scared to announce that I was leaving the mod team, and Stella City as a whole, and spent probably half of the time I’ve been “away” going back and forth with myself on how to approach doing it and if I even wanted to actually step down or not.
I’ve been part of Stella City prior to day 1.  I remember when Gini first messaged me and a few other friends about them working on a new rp group, and shooting their ideas at us and looking for tips and suggestions from us on names and the like.  I was waiting to board a flight when Stella City officially opened, and was quick to send an character application in-- despite my original unease about joining another group since I hadn’t been in one in years and was a fairly busy person.  From the first day, I’ve enjoyed every moment spent in the city of stars and candy clouds (and sheep.. lots, and lots of sheep..)  I joined the mod team sneaky sneaky, helping Gini with the inbox as they were busy themselves with maintaining the fresh city.  It wasn’t long before the official announcement of Sagittarius Mod was made-- I always felt like it was a month, though it was more like a week or two.. time apparently selectively flies when you’re having fun I guess, haha..
The group spent a long time being run by just Gini and I-- a concept we all look back on and wonder how we survived and how we never wanted to do that again, haha.  But we somehow made it work.  Bringing in more mods also initially scared me because… what if the fresh young meat took all my work?  What if people forgot the delightfully stupid Sagittarius Mod in the sea of Libra, Leo, and Virgo?  After a well staged fight with Aries Mod on Twitter that shook much of the group, while the two of us were cracking up (new mods included in the fear after I was removed from the mod chat)... We were ready to party.   I even got my own grave in Starlight Shrine because I was always dying.  Spooky Ass Ghost Mod truly became a ghost, showing up in the inbox whenever the young folk gave him the chance-- until grandpa had learned “wow not having to do the inbox is nice…. Me likey”  Mod memes consisting of miscellaneous stock photos and poorly drawn on astrological symbols were filling up people’s minds--- or at least my mind, and that’s the mind that matters, right? That’s what I like to tell myself.  Before I knew it, Pisces, Gemini, and Cancer were in our numbers, and I was even further trotting back from the mod-verse.
It was such an honour to help raise and watch the mods grow into really what feels like those who really run this city.  Each of them brought, and continue to bring, new ideas to Stella City and help the group grow in the best way, and in way that this grandpa can’t even imagine doing so myself.
I knew it wasn’t going to add stress to not be around for a little while with such amazing mods around, so I continued to take my break, not giving any suggestions of when I’d come back-- just occasionally swinging by to give my two cents.   I come into the mod chat when I get the chance now, and see the hard work all of the mods (excluding me) are doing each and every day and am shaken to my very core at how amazing they all are in their own ways.  Because Stella City has such an amazing team of mods, I feel better than ever about stepping away from being a mod.  I know (my lack of presence has proven already) that Stella City will not suffer without the strange half man, half horse cryptid that I’ve become.  If nothing else, it may suffer an unexplainable feeling of “this should be sad but... who is Sagittarius mod?”  I can only hope my grave will serve as a memory of me that’s far better than I was… New members going to Starlight Shrine and seeing it, and wondering “sag mod?????” Because, honestly? Me too.
Thank you, everyone who is part of Stella City, was part of Stella City, and will be part of Stella City, for so many amazing memories-- my own fears of stepping back were headlined by fears of regretting it because I have so many memories with this group and have had so much fun being part of it.  I’m determined to keep this not a farewell, because perhaps once I get myself put back together, perhaps citizens of this quaint little city will start reporting sightings of a strange creature with the head, torso, and arms of a horse, but the lower half and legs of a man… Who knows, and who will believe them?
That in mind, ahem, Yusuke Asahina  and Ohgi Krian have been dropped! (that sounds unsafe and DCF should be called..) .... *looks into a mirror* Thank you for playing them as you did ☆
For the last time,
Always and forever,
♐ sagittarius

(1/2) Hiya! I'm back again. Wanted to provide the specifics for my circumstances in hope of some tips & such. I'm a closet hs-pagan, at least in my household. I'm currently working through online shrines & one, admittedly very small, altar in real life. I'm mainly planning on working with The Beta Kids & Kanaya, Terezi, Sollux, Feferi, and the Vantases. I guess what I'm doing is kind of worship? Idk how to quite describe it.
(2/2) I’m in the middle of setting up their online shrines, and then I’ll basically just do offerings through there - kinda for blessings, I guess? And if I’d really like to ask their help with a situation or something, I’d set up the altar for whichever character I wanna work with and give a physical offering & a prayer. I guess my question is; do you have any tips on working with any of the previously mentioned characters - specifically, giving offerings & keeping my stuff hidden?
This is most exactly how I do it! Tho I don’t have to worry much about privacy, my Mom doesn’t care, I only have to occasionally tell her “No you can’t move that flower it’s for my invisible clown friend”
I don’t have much focus on the Humans, but one great thing with the Homestuck ensemble in general is they all have such casual interests, it’s easy to please and reference them! You’re especially lucky with me as I have shrines for Jade, Terezi, Kanaya, Feferi, Vriska, and Gamzee.
And now a rambling suggestions list:
Computer Based: You’re already good on E-shrines, which I’ve never gotten into because I’d want to spend hours and hours looking for aesthetics and I’m always on mobile where nothing loads- but considering Homestuck centers around computers and a video game there’s lots of legit options here. For example I have a Sims house with my three favorite entities I honor (Kanaya, Terezi, Jade) and I try to play a bit with them and give them great fulfilling lives in honor of their characters. There’s lots of other ways you can do this- building themed temples or houses for them in Minecraft, or playing a game they’d like near their shrine, or something that represents them, or just connecting and telling them that’s what they’re doing. My Vriska shrine is by my Playstation and I play fighting and adventure games for her!
Classic, but Lowkey Devotion: for Jade, I sewed her up a Squiddles plush! I also give her plant seeds. And I considered the craft of sewing in lane with Kanaya’s interests as well, but my main Kanaya devotional activity is just reading a book I think she’d like (which I’m very bad keeping up with, sorry I haven’t finished Silver Eyes luv-) For Feferi it’d be fun, she’d probably like you tending a fish tank! but if you can’t do that, my shrine to her is a fish bowl full of sand, sparkly beads in her colors, and knickknacks to her liking- I found a cute bejeweled squid pendant I keep in there! Terezi’s shrine is more a bowl full of rainbow glitter and shiny things, also chalk. Do Terezi related things with chalk when you can. Do not eat the chalk, though I’m sure she’d like that alot
It’s also mainstream deity worship to write poetry, special prayers, or make art to honor them!
All these are great because you can really pass them off as not devotion-related at all. Just take up a hobby to honor them with! It could even give you a craft that helps you in the longrun!
My suggestions would be: John: Show Magic, I should suggest pranking, but- | Rose: Knitting, Witchcraft, Art, Psychology | Dave: Music mixing, CD collecting, Memes | Jade: Gardening, Plush collecting, Astronomy study | Sollux: Computer programming, Gaming, Divination (There’s many inconspicuous ways to do this) | Kanaya: Reading, Sewing, Babysitting | Feferi: Fish care, Swimming, Charity | Karkat: Self Care, RomCom collecting/marathoning, Being responsible | Kankri: Bad Social Justice  | Signless: Spreading peace, Talking about your faith, Being open and noble | Terezi is last because she overlaps, silly baby and her thousand sided personality: Law Study, Gaming, Chalk Art, Divination, Good Social Justice!!!
Spirit Work: Now I’m definitely biased because this has always come very easy for me, but it doesn’t for everybody. Though Meditation in general is always a good way to go about things.
If your family doesn’t mind candles, get some in corresponding color (another thing Homestuck is great with- though you’ll never be finding a fuchsia ocean-scented candle-)
There’s more in-depth methods for doing this you can look up, but my quick tip is find some time you can be alone in your room for a while. Probably late at night when everyones gone and going to sleep. You can light that candle, having a picture or something that represents them with you is also key and can work on it’s own. Meditate and get into a relaxed state, and then try and call for who you’re looking for. You can look up methods of protection if this makes you nervous, and also write up what you want to say to call them beforehand. If anxious, flowery and formal is just a nice way to start. But Homestuck kids are all very casual, I can tell you for one the Kanaya I have gets flustered if you treat her as an actual ~deity~ and I talk to Terezi and Jade like my best friends (I’m already set up for this cuz the Terezi is a guardian thoughtform and Jade a independent… soulbound… spirit? I could spend an hour explaining what I have going on with Jade. Point is they already know how desperate and hopeless I am)
The point of all that is to just call them up and talk to them!!! Ask personally what they want of the relationship.
If you prefer a less personal method you can still just ask a general version of them for advice. But meditation in general will help you focus on that.
When All Else Fails: “You Dave I’m putting this stack of obscure indie rockband CDs here to honor you and uhhhhh please help me achieve that Fake Chill thanks I love u man”
My laptops dying, but I hope this helps!!!! Thanks for Playing
------~Mod Bee
