Malex Thanksgiving Ficlet
Just a little holiday fluff.
Read it on AO3
When Michael decided he wanted to host Thanksgiving, he imagined a table covered in delicious, picture perfect food, with their friends and family gathered around it, smiling and laughing.  It was nothing like that.
Michael was so worried about undercooking the turkey that it was quite possibly the driest thing any of them had ever tasted.  Alex had underestimated the amount of time it would take the mashed potatoes to boil so by the time he finished them, the sweet potatoes were cold and had to be reheated.  The crock pot blew a fuse, and Michael cut his hand opening the green beans and bled into the casserole so they had to start it again.
But Maria brought Mimi’s famous cornbread stuffing, and Greg had taken up baking during the pandemic and made rolls that rivaled any bakeries.  The turkey wasn’t bad if you poured enough gravy on it, and no one was more surprised than Alex when his mashed potatoes were deemed worth the wait.
Michael - exhausted from getting up at 3am to start the turkey - fell asleep during Dallas’s blessing.  But Dallas made Max cry so everyone was too busy teasing him to notice Alex nudge Michael awake.  Kyle keeps checking the football scores on his phone, and Bonnie and Rosa get into a loud debate about some band only the two of them have ever heard of.
Liz forgot the pies, but Isobel brought double the wine requested and that seems to make up for it.  After Isobel breaks three glasses trying to clear the table with telekinesis, Kyle takes over and cleans the kitchen to surgical precision.  Alex makes popcorn everyone is too full to eat, and Kyle finally gets to watch the late game.
Alex and Michael fall asleep on the couch while Max and Dallas are bringing the tree in from the garage.  When they wake up the house is empty and quiet, the tree is up, the lights strung, and the ornament boxes stacked neatly next to it.
Alex yawns and hugs Michael to him.  “Wow, that was. . .”
“A disaster.”
“Perfect.”
They say at the same time.
“Best Thanksgiving of my life,” Alex tells him sincerely.
“Mine too,” Michael agrees.  “But we’re not doing it again, right.”
“Hell no,” Alex says, then catches the way Michael winces. “You already invited them for Christmas, didn’t you?”
“I love you,” is Michael’s only reply.
“I love you too,” Alex sighs. “There’s always catering.”
“Or a Christmas miracle.”

9 for malex
First of all, how dare you?? Second of all, play this song based on this post
9. “You need to wake up because I can’t do this without you.”
Pick a number from this list and send to me with a ship 💕
The rain had just started to trickle down from the sky, heavy drops shining iridescently as they fell, landing all but silently around them.
Michael knelt, pulling Alex up over his thighs and cradling his head in his hand, the other holding his ribs as they strained for breath.
He wasn't sure what was the rain and what was coming from his own eyes, the drops landing softly on Alex's pale cheeks.
"Alex," he muttered in a choked cry. "Alex, please."
It was every fear being realised all at once, it was every wall coming crashing down around him, everything they had built just crumbling into nothing. Because that's what it would be without him, nothing.
Alex reached up slowly, fingers barely grazing Michael's cheek as his breaths grew shallow, his eyes still warm, still looking at Michael the way they always had.
"It's okay," he said, and Michael shook his head.
"No, no Alex this isn't okay, you need to hold on," he sobbed.
"You're here," Alex said, the words getting caught in his throat. "That's all... I ever wanted."
Michael held him tighter, his teeth grit tightly in his jaw, lump rising in his chest, or maybe it was his heart tearing into pieces.
Others stood around them, Max and Liz, Isobel and Maria, but as far as Michael was concerned, there was only Alex, and he was begging him not to go.
"You'll be okay," Alex said, tears falling down into his hairline. "You will."
"No, this never should have happened," he said. "I was supposed to keep you safe. It should be me, it should be me."
Alex was shaking his head, wincing at the movement, fingers trying to press deeper into his skin, but they were growing weaker.
"They need you," he said, his voice tired, low. "Michael you're... you're their family."
"Maybe," Michael said, leaning in to press his forehead against Alex, knowing the tears were landing on his skin, feeling his breathing slow under his hands as he barely managed the words. "But you are mine."
"Hey," Alex said. "I know."
His voice was cracked and rough, Michael felt the way his body was pushing out each syllable, like they were physically weighing him down.
"I love you," Michael said, lips brushing against Alex, filling the gaps between his words with soft kisses to his skin. "I love you Alex, please, I love you..."
"I love you... too," Alex stuttered, taking in a slow breath, and then another, followed by a slow exhale as his hand went limp and fell from Michael's cheek.
A sound came from Michael's mouth that was barely human, it was agony, manifested from his lungs and spat out into the cold night as though someone out there would hear it, change fate.
"No, no, no, no, Alex!" he yelled, a great heaving cry that made the headlights around them flicker, the light-towers creak and quake. "No you can't go, you can't..."
Max made a move to step forward, but he couldn't do it. His heart broke for Michael, there was nothing he could do, nothing he could say. If it had been Liz, there would be nothing to soothe the burning fire in his body, nothing to quell the sheer heartbreak.
"Please, you have to wake up," he sobbed, holding his body tighter. "Alex I can't do this without you."
He cried out his name, the light towers flashing with loud cracks, everyone covering their faces as the sparks fanned out like fireworks through the rain.
Michael's fingers held Alex's head, wiping the rain and tears from his cheeks, whispering promises and apologies against his skin, pleading to a god he never believed in to bring Alex back to him. He couldn't lose him, not like this, not before they'd really even started.
His mind was reaching out for a miracle, for anything that could fix this, bring Alex back to him. And he was grasping at straws, going over every scenario in his head, because he refused to believe that this was the end.
Max's powers were gone, but maybe there was something deep inside him like his father, as much as he had rejected that thought for so long he was finally in a position to hope for it. He pressed his hand to Alex's collarbone, every inch of him willing something, anything, to happen.
Tears streamed down Isobel's cheeks as she watched him, her arms around Maria who was sobbing into her shoulder. She shook her head, biting her lip as it trembled.
"Michael..." she said softly, about to go on until she saw the pendant around his neck begin to glow.
They watched as his body trembled with it, the force of his efforts and his unmatched will to make it work. The steel in the light towers were now warping with metallic screams that filled the air while the pendant against Alex's lifeless chest hovered to meet Michael's, glowing in symmetry until the pieces met between them, crashing together with one final spray of sparks from the towers behind them, fading back to darkness as the air was sucked back into Alex's lungs in one deep breath. Michael's body relaxed as he stared down at him, the silence closing in around them as he pressed his fingers to Alex's throat.
"Michael..." Isobel said, in barely a whisper, looking down at the shimmering pattern ever so faintly painted on Alex's skin.
"He's got a pulse," Michael said incredulously, letting out a laugh between his heavy panting breaths.
"What did you do?" she whispered.
Michael's head lolled to the side, dizzy and light, his breathing laboured before he looked back up with an unfocussed gaze.
"Call Valenti," he said, before he slumped down to the ground beside Alex, the alien glass still connected between them like a tether.

Malex Monday fic.
*anti Maria Deluca*
Michael doesn't sit on a bar stool and act like things don't matter!
Alex was feeling good, fantastic actually. He and Michael are finally an official thing, their solid. They defeated Jones and now he's dead. All threats are done and over and now they're celebrating.
Isobel called them to the Wild Pony the day after his and Michaels first date. They were going to decline and spend time alone at his place but Isobel insisted, saying they all need to let loose together and celebrate. So they accepted and met everyone there.
He hadn't been that close with everyone lately, only Michael, Kyle and recently Max a bit. But he and Isobel hadn't really connected much. Rosa hasn't really spoken to him since returning from the grave. His friendship with Liz fell into an actual grave after she picked favorites and how she treated him last year. And well him and Maria, that friendship is dead, he just can't get past the things she did last year and he shouldn't have to. He felt like an odd man out for a long time.
But tonight he didn't feel that way, with Michael, Kyle and strangely Dallas and Heath there they made him feel belonged and included. They've been playing a few rounds of pool for a while now with Dallas and Michael kicking each other's asses.
Alex smiled watching them, he could see a good friendship here. One Michael could really use. Maybe even Dallas. He doesn't know much about the man but he's already a wonderful addition to the group.
After yet another round of Michael winning, Michael shouted happily, going over to him and planting a kiss right on Alex's lips like he's done each time he wins.
Alex laughed against the kiss, laying a hand on his cheek.
Dallas laughed, admitting defeat, " one of these days imma kick your ass and you'll be paying for the next round"
" Nope!" Michael claimed, wrapping an arm around Alex's waist, " we'll be wrinkled and in diapers before that ever happens, Alex will be pushing me in a wheelchair"
Alex laughed as Dallas shook his head laughing, " I'll beat your ass with my cane then if you win at that age"
Michael raised his glass with a smirk, "I'd like to see you try grandpa"
Alex laughed, grabbing the cue from Michael" alright old men, calm yourselves before you pull a muscle. Also step aside it's mine and Heath's turn "
Michael let it go in his grip, leaving a kiss on his cheek making Alex blush and smile. He's still not used to the pda but he's getting there, even loving it so much to have Michael hold, kiss, show him with affection in public.
Heath took the cue stick from Dallas, " I haven't played since college so you'll probably easily kick my ass, especially since your boyfriend is clearly a pro"
Alex smirked smuggly, restarting the game for them. Michael pulled out a coin for them to flip when Isobel called them to the bar for a toast.
Michael groaned " come on Izzy my boyfriend was about to beat Heath's ass"
Isobel waved a hand, pouring a line of shots for all other them, " Michael! We get it, he's your boyfriend now! Now get over here"
Michael groaned, grabbing Alex's hand pulling him along with him as Heath and Dallas followed.
Isobel handed out the drinks to everyone as they gathered around the bar as she stood behind it with Maria.
Michael had his arm wrapped Alex tight, vibrating to get back to play pool.
As soon as Max and Liz joined from the corner they huddled into and had their shots in hand, Isobel spoke up loudly and drunkish.
" A toast to another glorious alien defeat! A toast to our glorious friendship, old and new! A toast to new friendships and romantic relationships! A toast to Liz being back, to Maria's amazing recovery and to Max being the only one with that face again" Isobel announced raising her glass.
Everyone laughed and clicked their glasses. Before anyone took their shots Maria spoke up, " and a toast to Guerin finally getting off a bar stool and acting like things matter "
Everyone laughed except Alex, Michael and Dallas.
Dallas looked confused as he slowly down his shot. Michael chuckled faintly then took his shot, trying to hide the hurt in his eyes. And Alex was furious.
How did any of them find that funny? How did they miss the hurt clearly on Michael's face?
Alex could feel Michael's body tensed against him while he pretends like the 'joke' didn't hurt him. But he couldn't fool Alex like he fool everyone else. It honestly pisses him off that they all are completely unfazed by it. That they all laugh at a completely untrue statement.
Without thinking the words left his mouth, " What the fuck?"
Everyone quieted down and turned to him confused and shocked. Michael however was surprised, like he knew what the meaning behind it was for and that it surprises him that someone said something. That made him even angrier.
Michael eyes shifted nervously, " Alex -"
" No" Alex stopped, he wasn't going to let Michael defend this. " That comment wasn't okay, that's not a joke. And it's completely uncalled for."
Maria scoffed, rolling her eyes, "come on Alex, lighten up. It was just a joke and… besides it's not like it's a li-"
" Actually it is a lie," he interrupted again. He was in no mood to hear some bullshit excuses. " And that is not a joke by the look on Michael's face. That hurt him. So it's clear it's not the first time you've said it to him"
Liz stepper forward trying to calm the situation, " Alex it's just an innocent joke, we all thought it was funny"
Alex scoffed, raising a brow. " Not all of us. If you guys actually paid attention you would've noticed Michael's hurt. But you weren't, your all just praising the queen"
Maria stood up straight now, clearing agitated " would you just sh-"
" Nope" Alex interrupted again harshly this time. "Michael doesn't just sit at a bar stool and do nothing. And you all know this"
Liz looked around uncomfortably, shifting, " Alex look-"
"No"
Maria huffed rolling her eyes, she honestly looked like a brat not getting her way. " Alex you can't just attack everyone because you have a delusional version of Michael in your head that no one else sees"
" You're so full of shit Maria. You're seriously so ungrateful. This isn't some delusional version of Michael. Michael is one of the most caring, loving people I've met. And you're just too delusional to see that" Alex said, upset that they were trying to shut him up, he wasn't just going to stand there and let them hurt Michael and get away with it.
Maria snorted like what he said was completely ridiculous. " Michael's destructive, he lies and breaks-"
" Maria enough!" Alex snapped, "Michael is none of those things. He has a hard time sometimes but that has never stopped him from taking care of the people around him. He saved my life multiple times, from my father twice and from my brother and Hellen Ortecho. He took the fall for a murder he did not commit for a decade and never complained once just so he could protect Isobel. He built a damn alien heart pacemaker that brought his brother back and is keeping him alive as we speak. He protected Liz like she's his own family. And Kyle when he was in danger even though Michael acts like he hates him. And he sure as hell has protected and taken care of you. He was there for you when you were attacked by Noah, he supported you through the mess with your mom, took care of you with your powers and he saved your life multiple times as well. The only problem here is you not appreciating that and wanting to find any problem with him like he's done something wrong to you. He hasn't. You need to grow the hell up. Stop talking crap about him all over town, stop yelling at him, and show him some damn respect for once because last year without him you're dumbass would have ended up dead. I'm sick and tired of you getting away with do stupid selfish shit while you belittle Michael all the time." Alex shouted angrily. Maybe he went a bit overboard but he didn't care honestly, if none of them were going to stand up for Michael he would.
Alex down his shot finally, then slammed it on the bar, looking up at them challenging them to say something against him. None of them did. They looked horrified and ashamed. Dallas looked impressed and a bit proud. Max looked proud too, like something he's known for a long time just had been proven. Michael looked blank, just blinking surprised.
An uncomfortable feeling filled him, twisting his gut. Telling him he did something wrong.
Alex shifted uncomfortably grabbing his coat, looking anywhere but them, "just thought you guys should know"
Before anyone can say anything he left, bolted out of there like jackrabbit.
God what was he thinking, it's obvious Michael didn't want him defending him. Also he probably just isolated himself even more than before now. Maria is their beloved bar tender, they fond all over her, praise her, protect her, he's just the guy on the outside. They're probably going off on how awful all that was and that Michael needs to get his boytoy under control or worse break up with him.
He didn't even realize he was crying until the tears hit his mouth, gasping he wiped them away. Alex walked up to his car door, trying to find his keys in his jacket ignoring how freezing it was.
He finally found them unlocking the door with a clock of a button, he laid a hand on the door prepared to open it when a hand grabbed his arm and whipped him around. Facing Michael now, before he could react Michael pounced on him, kissing him deeply.
Alex's brows raised, surprised, gasping against his lips, clenching Michael's arm. Michael kept his lips locked on Alex's backing him up against the car door, reaching up and threading his fingers through his hair, clenching tight.
His confusion washed away, kissing Michael back, holding his face in hands. Michael's wrapped around his waist, pulling him in close, deepening the kiss.
Alex slipped out a moan, tightening his grip on Michael.
Time went by sharing messy kisses against the door. When Michael finally pulled away, resting his head against his, Alex gasped for air but also to keep his tears under control.
Michael ran his fingers along his cheek and jaw staring deeply into his eyes with the same look from a few days ago on his couch. The look he had when he told Alex he's home. Alex's tears finally fell as he swallowed down a sob.
Michael quickly swept them away, replacing them with kisses.
Alex shook his head, " you're not angry at me?"
Michael smiled softly, with his own tears now filling his eyes, " no. Baby… that… that was the first time anyone has ever stood up for me like that."
Tears fell from his cheeks then and Alex did the same he did for him. Swept them away and replaced them with kisses.
"Michael, you didn't deserve to be treated like that. I just… couldn't stand for it" Alex said, hating the way Michael never expected someone to defend him like that. He deserved better than that.
Michaels face scrunched up trying to keep his tears back, he sniffed deeply as tears fell. Alex caressed his cheek, comforting him.
"I didn't think I deserved better before" Michael admitted tearfully, " I was always told I was broken… destructive, dangerous. That I was going to fail and never succeed…. I was told that for so long, I didn't believe I deserved better. So… I never stood up for myself. I never stood up when people belittled me or thought less of me. And….it.."
Michael seemed to struggle with getting the rest out as he choked on tears. Alex wrapped his arm around his tighter, using his other hand to rub circles over his cheek comfortingly.
"Michael, you don't have -"
"It's makes last year so much worse" Michael interrupted, choking on tears, hiccuping, " I was a mess last year, making dumb, irational choices. I hurt you the worse and now you're here defending me against the person that I broke your heart with. Alex I am so sor-"
" Hey no" Alex took a hold of his face, kissing him, " Michael that is in the past now. We are not who we were last year. Last year hurt, it broke my heart and killed me. But with everything that has happened the past week between us has helped heal that. There will be moments where I struggle with the pain I went through but I will fight through that to have you. Michael I don't want you apologizing. And you do deserve to be defended. None of what she has said about you now or then is okay. She doesn't just get to belittle you like that. "
Michael clinged onto him tightly, lip quivering, " Alex it's fine honestly. She has her own views and -"
" No baby, just no" Alex caressed his face gently, " Michael, you are so much more than what she views. Your a genius, stronger, brave, so fucking care and with so much compasity for love it amazes me. You fight for and take care of the people you love no matter the cost. You are not some destructive town drunk, that doesn't care about people. And I love everything bit of you, even the stubborn macho cowboy part…. He is very sexy actually."
Michael's smile grew as he blinked away tears, he leaned and kissed him. " Really, even that part. I guess it really never got old then"
Alex scoffed playfully, shaking his head " oh hell no. Never did. Never will in fact"
Michael smiled, light returning to his eyes. Alex leaned his head against Michael's, running his fingers through his hair.
Michael hummed happily, holding Alex tight to him. After a few moments he pulled back, wiping the few stray tears left away. " Let's get home. I don't really want to see any of them right now. I wanna be with you, in a safe place…all night. And for….. the rest of our lives."
Alex smiled nodding, giving him a kiss. Michael kissed him back then hesitated going to the otherside of the car.
" What is it?"
Michael looked at him for a while, turning something over in his head.
" I love you…. It's you Alex. It's always been you" Michael said with so much love and sincerity.
Alex smiled big, " I love you… it's been you always and forever."
Michael smiled " I know, I always knew "

1.09 || 3.10
[Image Description: Ten stacked gifs of two scenes from Roswell, New Mexico.
1.09 scene - Liz and Max at the turquoise mines Liz: That’s the problem, Max. I don’t know what to do with the way that you feel about me. It isn’t real. For ten years you have loved a version of me that doesn’t exist anymore. This smart, perfect girl who believes in God and - and love and humanity. I am different now. I’m a mess. I run away from everything - Max: And you’re overly defensive. And you’re sometimes selfish, and you’re always muttering in Spanish like you think it’s some secret language that no one understands but you. Max takes a few steps closer to Liz. Max: You always have to convince everyone you’re the smartest person in the room, like we don’t already know. His hands gently reach for her arms and slide down until he's holding her wrists. Max: You think your sister was hard to love, and so you think that being perfect and being the smartest, that you’re easier to love. But you’re not perfect. I see your faults. And I love you. Easily.
3.10 scene - Liz and Max at that lab after finding a scientist that Jones killed Max: No matter how many awful things Jones does, I’m still drawn to him. Liz: Max, it’s a tether. That’s all. Max: What if that is my destiny? Liz: Then screw destiny. Cause you, Max Evans, you are the most… Liz takes a few steps closer to him. Liz: Genuine, caring, wonderful person I have ever met. I- I saw it in your eyes that first day on the playground, and I still see it in them. Even now. Max: You can’t be sure. Liz: Yeah, I can, cause I’m not the only one who sees it. Isobel loves you, Michael loves you, and… I love you, Max Evans.]

and the winter passed and the sun shone upon her- chapter 1
Tumblr media
Thanks to the lovely @primalmusic and @sam7sparks7 for beta reading! (All mistakes are mine). You guys are amazing <3
A few hours into their mall trip sees the four of them with various bags and smoothies. It’s Isobel’s favorite kind of outing, one packed with all sorts of colors and new things to experience. Which is what sees them being dragged from store to store by their overly enthusiastic sister.
Max doesn’t mind at all, she’s managed to find a dress and a translated copy of Renée Vivien’s poetry. All in all a successful outing, even without the constant sibling bickering that has a dopey grin on her face.
“You two are impossible,” Dallas chuckles.
Isobel finally manages to free the buckle from the box. “Ta da!”
“Impossible?” Michael scoffs, passing the recently de-buckled belt to Isobel. “We’re just celebrating your turn to the macho cowboy side of the tracks.”
“Macho?” Dallas quirks a brow.
“He’s right,” Max says, “definitely more melancholic.”
“Two for two,” Isobel says, clicking the buckle into place. It’s silver and ornate, there are four turquoise inlays surrounded by swirling intricate metal. A metaphor if Max ever saw one. Dallas’s first belt buckle, bought on his first mall trip with his newly discovered siblings, being a cluster of four similarly built and shaped stones.
“The both of you definitely got our angsty nerd categories covered,” Michael snorts.

I really like your writing. If you still accept prompts, could you please write about how when Michael was with Maria, it was obvious how he was always thinking of someone else, even while they were talking or how his gaze always slid to Alex whenever he was around. How he couldn't really focus on anyone other than Alex and if she had forced Michael to choose, he without hesitation would have chosen Alex. Thank you
***
Michael and Alex had people over a lot. Well, not people, per say, just his siblings, the Ortechos, Maria DeLuca, Walt, Kyle Valenti (he was still tragically Alex’s best friend), and occasionally, when they had the time, Alex’s brothers. And not a lot, either, just when Michael was willing to spend the night doing something other than Alex.
This, believe it or not, had been Alex’s idea. He’d wanted Michael to feel at home, and Michael felt at home with his family. Funnily enough, only Alex had ever really been his home, and after he had suggested they invite his siblings over more, even to stay overnight whenever they felt like it, Michael realized that he’d never felt that more strongly.
The only issue was that Alex worked long enough hours as it was, either staring at screens or overexerting his body, so when he got home, he was always exhausted. It was bad because he didn’t sleep even after everyone usually left. Then, to Michael’s fear and relief, those days would catch up with him, and try as he might, Alex just couldn’t stay awake. It was concerning, but also very, very cute.
So moments like this, whenever Michael and his siblings, Liz, and Kyle were sitting in the living room, Alex already has his head on Michael’s lap, so far past dozed off that even their conversation couldn’t wake him up.
“Poor guy,” Isobel murmured fondly, reaching up from where she sat cross-legged on the ground to pet Alex’s hair. “He must be so tired.”
“Hands off,” Michael said, kissing Alex’s temple. “He’s mine.” As if on cue, Alex whimpered under his breath like a disturbed kitten and snuggled deeper into Michael’s lap. Michael kind of wished everyone else would go away just so he could carry his boyfriend back to bed.
Maria scoffed as she took a sip from her beer bottle. “Guerin, I swear, if you’d ever done that to me, you would’ve lost an arm.”
Kyle raised a brow at Alex. “Yeah, I don’t think that would’ve been a problem.”
“Come to think of it, you’re right,” Max said thoughtfully. “I don’t think you’ve ever cared this much about anyone but Alex. Not even us!”
“Well, look at him!” Isobel pointed at Alex’s beautiful sleeping face accusingly.
Everyone snickered and cooed an aggrieved Michael, and while Maria was still smiling, her brows had pinched, her bottle halfway to her lips. “Seriously?”
Michael shrugged, running a hand up Alex’s arm, his other hand in Alex’s hair. “He likes it when I’m possessive,” he said with a smirk that earned him a scoff from Kyle.
“He likes you a little too much, if you ask me,” Kyle muttered. “Even when you act like a freaking Viking.”
“You know,” Maria said slowly. She was the only one that hadn’t laughed. “Now that I think about it, even when we were dating, I don’t think there was ever a time you didn’t look distracted.” She huffed an unconvincing chuckle. “Like you were . . . thinking about . . .”
Alex scrunched his shoulders and turned his face into Michael’s lap before he settled again. Michael’s heart felt like it was going to suffocate him, and he would’ve been happy to let it.
He probably should’ve lied, should’ve said that he’d cared about Maria as much as he’d always cared about Alex, that he’d given Maria all of himself. But he didn’t want to lie, not with Alex in his arms.
“Always,” he murmured, and instead of looking at the hurt in Maria’s eyes, he leaned down to kiss Alex’s temple, his ear. Then the room erupted in groans.
“Oh my god!” Isobel complained. “Get a room!”
“Okay,” Kyle pushed himself up. “I’m calling it.”
“Me too,” Max sighed, holding out a hand for Liz who was watching Michael and Alex as if just really seeing them for the first time. She shook herself out of it and nudged Maria’s shoulder.
“C’mon,” she teased. “He’s gone.”
Was Michael supposed to deny that? Yeah, he was gone. He couldn’t think of anything but getting Alex into bed, nuzzling his jaw, and holding him tight as they fell asleep in each other’s arms. The others seemed to realize that as they cleared out. Maria was the last to leave.
“Can I ask you something?” she mumbled, like she already knew the answer. Michael already knew the question.
“It was always him,” Michael answered, unwilling to take his eyes off Alex as he brushed his bangs back with his fingers. “Even when it looked like it wasn’t, it was. There was never a choice.”
Maria didn’t say anything, but after a few seconds, he heard her walk out and close the door behind her. Michael pressed his lips to the shell of Alex’s ear, kissed it again, and whispered, “Even when it looked like it wasn’t,” he promised fiercely, “it was, Private. It always was.”

wip thursday
In typical disaster style, i have 1000 wips and started a new one but I’m just happy the muse seems to be back while my life continues to be hell.
The door opened at Sanders and Son Trinkets, and instead of a traditional chime, Michael had in a fit of irony, programmed the sensor to make the soft chitter of a Star Trek communicator badge upon entry. Walt had thought it was both hilarious but also in bad taste for a shop mainly run by an alien to engage in that particular science fiction trope to welcome business in the door. They battled over the options, Walt with his own sci-fi choice, but he lost because it was clear that the lightsaber noise from Star Wars was too distracting to Michael, and the Star Trek chitter was just soft enough to be ignored if there was a project in progress.
He didn’t have the nerve to tell Walt the real reason why he avoided StarWars and any reference to it.
Michael didn’t look up from his beading efforts, and let Walt take the shop floor in greeting the customer. It was his turn after all, to accost a tourist since Michael had patiently waited on Mrs. Ann Evans that morning. Painfully awkward for them both, since she kept talking about the backyard campouts that he had participated in as a child while remarking over the cost of the various pendants on display. It was clear that the rich stayed rich through shameless negotiation of a discount, even if it was bled from the child now adult, that she had left in foster care. Her final selection was a lab-made gem that Michael had spun a clever story of mining personally from the hills of Roswell’s river valley, and while she walked away believing she had won, Micheal knew the real score.
Isobel would approve of his tactics while he was sure the story would garner a look of reproach from Max, although it’s possible Max was love-drunk over his upcoming wedding that he might find it funny.
“Welcome to Sanders and Son, I’m Sanders, and anything you see is for sale, including the display case.”
Michael hid a smile, and then threaded a bead through his needle and started to slowly draw it through the loam, Walt was a ruthless broker when it came to closing a sale. He looked down at the simple bracelet, and then glanced at the glass case below his work space where various other completed projects rested, with small white paper price tags attached to the ends. The mix of black, purple, and turquoise bracelets were always popular with the walk-in traffic of casual tourists. Pendants of all lengths and sizes were nestled on crushed velvet, and there were small bowls of hand-made silver rings.
Outside of jewelry, there were shelves filled with small handmade figurines. Small flying saucers, fashioned out of scrap metal by Walt’s hands and then painted into brilliance by Rosa Ortecho. Old hubcaps made for metal flowers, repurposed car hoods had been trimmed and modeled into small buildings, carefully crafted to look like Main Street. Walt’s true gift was making small windmills, with colorful blades that function as fidget spinners for bored children.
“I was interested in your jewelry, more specifically your wedding bands. A friend of mine recently showed me hers, and she said she got them here…”
That voice. Michael froze at the sound of the soft low husky voice and didn’t dare to look up from his work. It couldn’t be. It was impossible. It had been fifteen years since that voice had called Roswell home before leaving for the military, and twelve years since he had last visited on leave. Twelve years since that fight that had broken Michael.
The needle slipped through the loom, breaking free of the pass through the beads abruptly and stabbed Michael painfully into his fingertips. He bit his lower lip and flexed his right hand in reaction, while his left, well… his left remained much the same. There was no flexing those fingers free, forever frozen in shattered bones and teenage hope.
“Wedding bands are done custom, no exceptions. We sell premade boutonniere pins or tie tacks, if you’re interested.” Walt was no-nonsense in his explanation, uttered without a shred of an apology even as he offered a replacement to the customer.
“Well, how do I get a custom set of wedding bands then?”
“You talk to the artist and he decides if he will make them and how they will look.”
“And is that you?” The note of disbelief was a little hurtful but largely earned considering Walt sported a black eyepatch and his hands shook slightly, a marker of his age, as he moved throughout the shop.
Slowly, as if he was talking to a small child, Walt drawled, “No, the artist is back behind the counter, where it says workshop.” You idiot, was unsaid but was an almost audible chaser.
Michael chanced a look up from his work on the bracelet. It was possible his mind and his heart were playing tricks on him and it wasn’t Alex. Except. Fuck. With his dark hair, much longer than the military cut Michael remembered from the past, and his black glittering gaze, Alex Manes was indeed, standing in his shop, and he wanted wedding rings. For a man, presumably. For a man that wasn’t Michael.
Fifteen years ago, a hammer had sliced through the air and had pulverized his left hand. Today, there was no hammer in sight, just the truth cutting through him with the same ruthlessness. Alex was back, he was back at last, but he was not back for Michael.
