An “Intellectualized Rock ‘n’ Roll Artist:” Robbie Robertson Dead at 80
Robbie Robertson is dead.
The Band co-founder, guitarist and primary songwriter died Aug. 9, his management said in a statement.
“Robbie was surrounded by his family at the time of his death,” the statement said.
Robertson was 80; no cause was given.
“May Robbie Robertson rest in peace and love,” Todd Rundgren’s Spirit of Harmony Foundation said.
His death leaves Garth Hudson, 85, as the sole surviving Band member.
Robertson was an “intellectualized rock ‘n’ roll artist,” Michael Des Barres said.
“Robbie Robertson is so important in the history of rock ‘n’ roll music, bringing Americana and country music together … he will be remembered,” Des Barres said.
Given Robertson wrote “The Night They Drive Old Dixie Down,” “The Weight,” “The Shape I’m In,” “Stage Fright,” “Up on Cripple Creek” and scads of others, that is an understatement.
“Robbie Robertson’s words wove the fabric of the songs we all wear,” Joe Newberry said. “Rest in peace.”
“The loss of Robbie Robertson is heartbreaking,” Kiefer Sutherland said. “Canada has lost an icon, and music has lost a poet and a scholar.”
Robertson started - as his Band mates Hudson, Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel did - with Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks. They then became Bob Dylan’s band; then simply the Band.
“One of the all-time greats,” Tinsley Ellis said of Robertson.
When the Band split, Robertson’s output slowed considerably and he made just six LPs released between 1987 and 2019. But that didn’t faze Al Di Meola’s fandom.
“I absolutely adored Robbie Robertson,” the guitarist said. “His (self-titled) solo debut … is to this day my all time favorite pop album. … Robbie, rest in peace.”

Batman: The Animated Series - Paper Cut-Out Portraits and Profiles
Nostromos
Carl Fowler was a talented but unsuccessful actor who served a prison sentence for petty larceny.  Upon his release, he and his partner, Lucas, hatched a scheme to take advantage of the superstitiousness of Gotham City’s idle rich.
Fowler created the persona of ‘Nostromos,’ a powerful psychic who could foresee the future.  This Nostromos would make dire prognostications about the future and then Lucas would orchestrate things so these predictions came true.  Nostromos gradually accrued a group of loyal acolytes among the city’s elite, all convinced of his incredible powers.  When Nostromos predicted a financial collapse, his followers began pooling their resources into a superfund with him as the sole executer.
Among Nostromos’ followers was the estate banker, Ethan Clark, whose daughter was good friends with Bruce Wayne.  Wayne was intrigued by Clark’s conviction in Nostromos, as well as his daughter concern for him.  As such, Wayne infiltrated the burgeoning cult and was quickly able to ferret out that Nostromos was a fraud.
Seeing his scheme begin to fail, Nostromos and his partner abducted Clark’s daughter and threatened to kill her unless Clark agreed to transfer the superfund into gold bullion that Fowler and Lucas could then abscond with.   Fortunately, Batman intervened and saved the day.  Fowler was exposed as a charlatan and he and Lucas were sentenced to prison.
Actor Michael Des Barres provided the voice for Nostromos, with the fraudulent psychic appearing in the twenty-second episode of the first season of Batman: The Animated Series, ‘Prophecy of Doom.’

Some Miami Vice-related links from Tubi (free, no login req, works best on desktop) that y'all might find interesting!
^ At the 53:20 mark is a segment specifically about Don Johnson and Miami Vice, including old photos of DJ and an interview. Apparently in the early '80s a diverse group of actors and rockstars used to get together every weekend to play Trivial Pursuit!
The rest of the doc is very good too btw, and DJ is in more than just that segment.
(more links below cut)
Johnny Carson Show Interviews
Tubi lacks a comprehensive or even complete listing of episodes for this show, so these actually took a while to find. imo, JCS is cringe and so are these interviews, but they are historically fascinating
Tumblr media
Don Johnson - aired 9/25/87, 17:03; one of two appearances
Saundra Santiago - aired 9/17/86, 28:35; one of seven appearances (JC liked teasing ditzy women)
Philip Michael Thomas - aired 4/25/86, 24:25
You can probably find these and the missing ones on YouTube as well.
MV Actors Other Films
Currently on Tubi (Aug '23), which also hosts the entire series of Miami Vice (sans "Evan") for free. I didn't look up the smaller actors.

“One of Our Greatest Singer-songwriters:” Gordon Lightfoot Dead at 84
Gordon Lightfoot, the Canadian troubadour who found massive chart success both at home and south of the boarder while earning the respect of his contemporaries, has died, his management said.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm that Gordon Meredith Lightfoot has passed away,” it read.
Lightfoot, 84, died May 1 of natural causes at a Toronto hospital, the statement said. The hard-touring musician had recently cleared his 2023 concert calendar citing health issues.
“The world is a lesser place without him,” Bryan Adams said on social media. “I know I speak for all Canadians when I say: ‘Thank you for the songs, Gordon Lightfoot. Bless your sweet, songwriting heart.’”
Lightfoot was “one of our greatest singer-songwriters,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement.
“Gordon Lightfoot captured our country’s spirit in his music – and in doing so, he helped shape Canada’s soundscape,” Trudeau said. “May his music continue to inspire future generations and may his legacy live on forever.”
That soundscape might be best defined by the CBC-commissioned “Canadian Railroad Trilogy” from 1967. In releasing 20 albums between 1966’s Lightfoot and 2020’s Solo, Lightfoot heard his songs recorded by everyone from the Kingston Trio to Bob Dylan to Watkins Family Hour.
Lightfoot’s death elicited reactions from across generations and genres on social media. Among them: “What great music he gave us” (Foghat); “Brilliant” (Michael Feinstein); “You made the world a better place” (Jerry Douglas); “An amazing writer; an amazing singer” (Joe Newberry); “The Mark Twain of folk music” (Michael Des Barres); “Gordon really had the gift” (Jason Isbell); “Rest in peace” (Brian Wilson).
“We’ll never stop singing your songs,” Choir! Choir! Choir! said in a statement.
Among the best-known of those songs are “Early Morning Rain,” “If You Could Read My Mind, “Sundown,” “Carefree Highway,” “Rainy Day People” and “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”
In eulogizing the “Canadian treasure,” Steve Poltz recalled how Lightfoot would voluntarily play “soul-crushing,”“tweener” sets at Canadian festivals, leaving the spotlight to younger musicians.
“Gordon Lightfoot was a gift to the world,” Poltz said. “We were lucky he left us such a treasure trove of beautiful songs. Godspeed, you beautiful troubadour.”
