8, 11, 15 for the football game !!
Sarah ❤️🫂 thank you darling!
8. Who is your favorite European player?
Virgil 😋 I really gravitate toward defenders and I will never underestimate the transformative impact Virgil had on Liverpool (as someone who was around for plenty of the pre-Virgil days lol). One of the only posts I’ve ever made on here that I got anon hate for was saying people don’t respect Virgil enough and saying streets will remember late 2010s Virgil best defender itw. And people had the nerve to say I was full of shit hahaha cackling.
11. Who is my favorite South/North/Central American player?
It’s Darwin haha is it boring that my answers are just Liverpool players. Although in a previous ask I did respond that Alexis is my current favorite player so…I’ll also use this space to s/o my babies at Tigres, Diego Lainez and Marcelo Flores, both Mexican internationals at my fave Liga MX team 🐅💛💙
15. What is my favorite La Liga team?
Used to be Barca! I was a really big Barca fan in the earlier days of my soccer fandom - actually got to see Messi play at the Camp Nou which I’ll forever be grateful for. But I don’t care as much about them anymore. Most I just root for whoever is playing Real lmfao. I do like Bilbao though

iirc El Dorado is a Mexican hero and idk where jaime is from (but let's be real, he's from texas and the only latino countries that DC acknowledges are mexico and Puerto Rico lmao) but what if ed and jaime come from different countries and therefore bart ends up speaking the most appalling combination of the two dialects
Jaime is Mexican and YJA has made Eduardo Argentinian!
I won't lie and say I know the dialect differences, but I can see Bart doing that. Also I did see this meme about Mexicans and central Americans and changed it accordingly
Tumblr media
(Cuz if u think about, Ed was the one who could hold a slight grudge against Jaime since Tye and Virgil gave him benefit of the doubt and Asami was like sure)

Name Meaning Game
I was tagged by @fereldanwench and @wanderingaldecaldo, thanks girls ♥♥
RULES: Search and post the meaning of your OCs’ names (if you made their name up or they go by a nickname, post an explanation of how it came to you)! Bonus if you can find something for their last name too.
Tumblr media
VANESSA : from Greek "pherein" which means "bring", and "niké" which means "victory" ROSALINA : from the Latin word "rosa" which means "rose flower" VERGARA : "One who tended animals, a herdsman." SERRANO : "One who lives in the "sierra" - the mountains" I didn't know V had a name, I chose Vanessa to have a V name, but also a warm name, it came naturally to mind, and I liked the meaning. And even though my first OC in a game always follows the canon, I didn't adhere to the name Valerie for my girl Fun fact: I thought Vanessa was a Latin name, but it was invented by an Irish writer in the 18th century. Rosalina comes from Santa Rosa of Lima, patron saint of Latin America and of the Valentinos, as her father was one of them, this should be her main name, but her mother reversed the names. I still suck at last names. I liked the Vergara consonance with Vanessa (aliteration in A and V), then Mexican names often come with two names, from the father and mother, so I had to come up with a second one.
Tumblr media
VIRGILE : comes from the Latin "virga" which means "small flexible branch", but also the name of the famous Roman poet Virgile LUCA : in Latin with the term "lux" which means "light" ILARIO : comes from the Latin "hilarare" meaning "joyful" SARTO : An occupational name meaning 'tailor' in Italian, from the Latin sartor, from sarcire, meaning 'to mend'
Virgile (that I write in the European way and not in the American way, so with an -e at the end) wasn't supposed to be named that, it was supposed to be his netrunner name, because he is of Italian descent (his great grandparents moved from Rome to Seattle, they worked for Biotechnica). Finally, I like this name and I kept it even if it is not a V.
For the other two, he was given his grandfathers' names. I like the idea of light despite his dark years. As for joy, he was happy before he left with NetWatch and after the events of the game, with Panam.
As for Vanessa, I chose more his surname by sound than by meaning!
I won't tag anyone because i'm super late as usual, i saw this tag so many time on my dash ^^ be free to do it if you want !

Mexican Gothic Checkpoint #1
Just hit the halfway checkpoint (chapter 15/27) for Silvia Moreno-Garcia's Mexican Gothic and so far... I have my thoughts. This will contain SPOILERS so do not continue reading if you want to read it. Also, these are just my opinions and theories thus far, so don't judge!
Tumblr media
I am not a Gothic/ Horror reader, but recently I have been craving to read such books. The introduction of Noemí is quite relatable for me personally. A flighty, flirtatious and stubborn woman who is into her academics felt a little close to home. I find myself reading her through my eyes which is reasonably interesting since she feels like a mirrored image of myself (although I am not Mexican, I mean personality-wise).
The Doyle family is freaking weird! Like super weird and creepy. Howard, Florence and Virgil Doyle are just beyond gross in my opinion and it frustrated me to read about them. The rigidness of their characters and the lack of ability to interact with them in comparison to the sharp and cold moments that they do face off with Noemí is just jarring. But, obviously, it has its purpose. I do hope to get down to this family tree though.
I have a feeling Howard married his mother and has been pulling a Get Out form of keeping himself alive. It is such a gross thought, but I think that is the only way I can think it is working. Maybe Catalina and Howard, have been using the Mexicans who are close to them to elongate their lifespans.
Francis and Noemí's possible romantic relationship seems to be growing? I am not sure. It seems friendly, but it is interesting to see and keeps me hopeful for what is coming next.
I am hoping there is an intense spike of action coming, because of the dreams, the hunting down for answers, the increasing illnesses, and the hostility of the Doyles, I just want to know what is going on.
As a history geek who does study Latin American & Iberian history, I have to admit... I am enjoying the historical and Cultural references in this Gothic. Having the cures of mal de aire, lotería, the English-Spanish tensions and the layers of anthropological understanding makes this fun to pick apart. But, I have a feeling after all this eugenics talk with Howard, Noemí is gonna say jump ship.
Overall, I can admit I am creeped out, and I am not enjoying any of the interactions with the Doyles, but that definitely is the point. Although in third person, I can absolutely relate to Noemí and I feel truly bad for her. I don't know what is going to happen next but....

My Fancast for the Mexican Gothic adaptation.
This is only for the characters within High Place. Also, I am only doing this based on appearance alone.
Noemí Taboada - Ariana DeBose (Yes, I know she's older and I am also aware that she isn't Mexican but due to me being an American and the colorist nature of the Mexican film industry it was hard for me to find an actress that I thought could play the part.)
Catalina - Jenna Ortega (I know she's younger than the character )
Virgil Doyle - Alexander Skarsgård
Francis Doyle - Will Poulter
Howard Doyle and Florence Doyle - I don't know because there are a plethora of English actors and actresses that could play these two.
Ruth - Bella Thorne

does anyone else on the team have an accent? if so, what words do the rest of the team like making them say?
accents are so good
tws: racism
both Roman and Remus have Puerto Rican accents, although Remus’s is typically more pronounced; (the Prince parents put Roman through a number of speech therapy sessions in an attempt to “Americanize” his voice — it was a whole racist mess); having said that, the team generally doesn’t bother the Prince twins about their accents, but the twins do oftentimes quarrel with D in spanish (because “es ‘manejar,’ no ‘manejal.’ ¿incluso hablas español?”)
Patton and D both have, broadly speaking, “Mexican” accents — though Patton’s family has a Jalisco accent when speaking Spanish whereas D has a Yucateco one, which leads to slight variations in their English-speaking accents as well — and Patton’s accent is heavier since he grew up in a predominantly Spanish-speaking family; again, using their accents for entertainment is implicitly understood to be Off Limits, but their teammates will occasionally ask them for help ordering at Mexican restaurants
Emile and Remy grew up in California, but they honestly don’t have??? too much of an accent to show for it??? they say “like” and “hella” and “dude” more than the average Florida Ace — and Remy sometimes deliberately leans into the Valley Girl Accent for fun — but apart from that, their accents are pretty subtle
Logan is,,, Minnesotan. he does not have an accent, “Jared I Swear to God”
Virgil grew up in Florida and was raised by his White Mother, so his diction is exactly like the Floridian natives’; he can, however, talk exactly like the lead singer of Blink 182 when he tries, which is fun
OCs
Jared’s got an Texan accent, but — like Logan — his accent is more subtle than what the media likes to portray it as; he drops his g’s at the end of some words (i.e. “i’m goin’ to the store”), and he sometimes says “ice” a bit more like “ass” (which is hilarious), so the team at least has some material to work with; he has also unironically said “howdy,” so There’s That
Callen's native language is Korean, so he’s still got that accent going for him when he speaks English; again though, “we only force white people to use their accents for entertainment here in the Florida Aces Locker Room”
speaking of, Payton is Irish, so Everything he says is fantastic; the team’s favorite things to make him say include “th” words (thirty-three, third, thanks, etc) and phrases like “Top O’ the Mornin’ To Ya!”
David’s from New York, so fun words for him include “bodega,” “forget about it,’ "schlep,” and “coffee” among others
Myles is British. he has not known peace since he joined this team.
Teddy’s Italian, so he has a habit of skipping out on the “h” sound at the beginning of words like “happy” or “hospital”
Bo still prefers sign to spoken words, but when he chooses to speak, he’s got a Swedish accent going for him, (which. Jared Dies); the team made exactly One Joke about him swapping out a “J” for the “Y” sound, but then he showed them the word “sjuksköterska” and asked them to pronounce it, so they dropped it pretty fast

How TWD, FTWD and TWB Intertwine. Probably. ;D
About a week past, @galadrieljones, @wdway and I all had a discussion about the TWD universe. This isn’t necessarily about specific plotlines or even specific shows (Fear vs TWD, etc.) but more about how they are planning things, what they’re aiming for, and how they’ve incorporated symbolism. I just thought my fellow theorists had some really great insights and that some of you might find this discussion interesting.
So, this is very outside-the-show stuff, rather than my normal symbolism and foreshadow stuff. If it’s not your cup of tea, no worries. Just keep scrolling.  😉 But for anyone interested, here it is:
@galadrieljones:
This show offers so much more misdirection than I originally realized, lol. I remember hearing about this spin-off, and thinking how incredibly overkill it felt, and like how I felt it would immediately flop. Like, Reedus and McBride do not have great chemistry to me, and Carol and Daryl's relationship seems more predicated on struggle than success, which is honestly exhausting to watch. So, I have been wondering how the heck they will make this work, and I am now realizing they're probably messing with us, at least partially. Especially now after watching 10c and seeing how honestly tptb seem to be trolling Carylers very hard lol.
Tumblr media
Anyway, I have kind of a random question, going off of tptb and their intentions, for you, @twdmusicboxmystery and @wdway. I just started season 5 of Fear, and Al just discovered the CRM paperwork and the three-circles typography on the masked soldier in the mysterious, irradiated site of the plane crash. I just met Grace, too, and learned about the nuclear reactor meltdown. There is a whole arc seemingly dedicated just to irradiated walkers, radiation, and now there is a nuclear scientist. And Al discovered literal, obvious evidence of the CRM, deployed NEAR the radiation.
In season 10, with the satellite crash, the idea of radiation is barely even *touched on.* I mean, somebody mentions it, but that's like, it. That whole thing to me felt symbolic to the point of extremes. Like, storms of fire, maybe? Maybe it's a plague. I have yet to understand its greater connection to the plot. Until like, now, when I'm seeing radiation and the fall-out of nuclear radiation explored LITERALLY and expansively in Fear.
I have noticed while watching Fear that, as a show, it is much more interested in the larger, institutional angle of the apocalypse, ie: the military, the CRM. Even less mysterious factions like the Mexican cartels, One-percenter MCs, Native American tribes, prepper cults, and the Catholic church, all play a role, pointing somewhat obliquely to the great big institutional struggles and sometimes causes that outpace the control of the characters.
Tumblr media
In The Walking Dead, there is SO little of this, even hovering in the background. All of the factions in TWD are small potatoes. Even Woodbury, even the Saviors, just run by civilians, fighting guerilla wars, trying to survive.
In season 1, they tease the CDC's involvement, only to then immediately couch it as helpless, and send it up in flames. In season 3, a military helicopter is downed, and its pilot is easily killed by the Governor and Merle. Grady might be the most mysterious faction, with hints that it might be connected to something bigger, but those hints are vague, and the moment we have the opportunity to learn something more, the faction completely dissolves.
Even in season 10, Eugene's contact with Stephanie and her "mystery" faction are left deeply in shadow, and through 10c, are still merely hinted at, and almost totally just via imagery (nothing concrete, nothing in writing, anywhere).
Jadis is our most mysterious development, and her connection to the helicopters, the A/B symbolism, all extremely vague and unresolved. Michonne's discoveries on the island with Virgil are also super vague and unresolved. They are visual hints to the audience that something larger *might* be taking place, but very few of the characters seem to have any clue about it.
Tumblr media
Even Michonne, when she sees that phone with Rick's name on it, and finds Rick's boots, she is only concerned with finding RICK (an interpersonal drama), not finding out what's going on (a science fiction conspiracy plot).
Basically, I'm saying that the universe of The Walking Dead feels extremely impressionistic compared to the universe of Fear. In TWD, there are a million questions and open endings. It's to the point where it could all just be symbol. They're simply in purgatory, floating along the Acheron, with Virgil as their guide. Those who atone with their sins *die,* and ascend to a higher plane. I've always been interested in how little science fiction there *actually is* in The Walking Dead. There's never been any mention of the CRM, not overtly, and this faction with the Storm Trooper soldiers is still technically, fully shrouded in mystery.
So, when somebody refers to the CRM discourse, if you haven't watched Fear, or read the comic books, you literally might have no clue what they're talking about. Like I never once really understood what the CRM was or could be until getting to season 5 of Fear, where I am immediately presented with hard evidence of their existence(!!!!).
So, I'm wondering how much of the story in TWD do you feel is truly outsourced to Fear and then The World Beyond. At first, I was just looking for ways in which Fear crystallizes and foils certain themes that TWD only explores obliquely. But now I'm like, there's plot intersections! And they seem important!!
I'm just wondering like, how much do you think tptb are relying on audiences to watch closely, and to watch everything? I can see why the audience has waned if the intent is to create a massive crossover universe. I think that's actually a good thing lol, because it communicates that the show is smarter than it perhaps originally seemed, and that they're not willing to compromise. Anyway, this is just something that's been increasingly intriguing me over time, so I was wondering if, as way more seasoned viewers, you had any input to help me put the puzzle pieces together.
@wdway:
I don't know how well I can answer your questions, but I'll be happy to ramble for a while about the world of TWD.
Something I both love and hate about TWD is that there are so many levels of viewers watching. The diehard comic book viewers, who hate when there is any change from the comic. The larger number of viewers that enjoy the action/Syfy/horror of this type of show and accept everything at face value and never question if there could be more meaning than what their seeing or hearing in the story. Then there is the small group that loves the show because they believe there's so much more than what is seen on the surface and enjoys theorizing and analyzing the show trying to predict where the writers may be taking the storyline.
Obviously, we fall into the last group. Something that I was thinking about the other day and that @twdmusicboxmystery, @frangipanilove, and I have talked about a few times is how our world has expanded because of this show, not only through the people and friendships that have been made but the hours of research that has been done to back up the theories. TWD is a universe that offers a lot of different things for a lot of different types of people. Now to try to address a few of the questions you asked instead of just rambling, haha.
TWD is based on a comic book which is the main source of the storylines, and the writers are obligated not to venture too far from its source material. I think they found that to be somewhat limiting, so the spin-off Fear The Walking Dead was created to have a little more freedom in their storytelling.
Unfortunately, I don't think there was a long-term plan with Fear or in what long term direction they were going to take the story. They went through multiple showrunners the first few seasons, each of which wanted to take the show in a different direction.
Tumblr media
Scott Gimple became the head of the overall TWD universe and he absolutely had a long-term plan for that universe. You can definitely see that change when he took Morgan from the mother ship show and placed him in Fear. It hasn't always been a smooth transition and there has been missteps along the way, but in looking back the last few seasons you do see a certain direction they're going in and how it reflects and explains some of the things that are being set up in the mother show for the future.
As far as TWB, they're giving us a larger view of the world they're living in that's not limited to a small area but is much bigger than either TWD or Fear has shown before, and ultimately will pull all of these smaller worlds together in a much larger one. Ultimately, we will see that come together in the movies and the spin-off.
As far as the spin-off, since they are coming to the end of their source material and they are coming to the end of what has been known as simply The Walking Dead, the unnamed spinoff will still exist in that world and many of the same characters will be involved. They simply will not be legally tied to the comic book.
Since Daryl and Carol are the lead characters in TWD and they will continue on, it's an easy thing to refer to it as the Daryl and Carol spin-off. You can't please everyone, and I've heard a lot of grumbling about how knowing Carol and Daryl will live on takes away from the suspense of the series.
I don't really buy that, I think it helps the spin off knowing that there's at least these two characters that will be involved. I imagine that there will be other characters that will also continue in the spinoff but tptb are leaving that question up in the air for the suspense of not knowing who lives and who will die in season 11. This has been my opinion of the information that I've gathered over the last few years. Others might interpret the same information differently.
@galadrieljones:
Thank you for your reply!! I never really thought about the original TWD creators as being so "beholden" to the comic before, but that makes a lot of sense. It also makes sense why they want to end the original story and move forward in a new direction, especially since Rick is clearly gone, and it must be very hard to maintain fidelity to the comics with a hero (Daryl) who was not even *in* the comics at all.
I think you must be right about the spin-off not being just about Carol and Daryl, but they are ofc going to market it that way, as they're the two main characters that remain from season 1, so it is most likely to bring in a foundation audience of TWD fans who already exist.
Also, it's so funny what you say about Fear because it feels VERY true, ie: the show really suffered from a lack of unity of vision for a long time, but I feel that ever since Morgan joined the cast, it has finally felt like a cohesive show. I didn't realize that that also coincided with Gimple's taking over.
Like, I know ppl complain a lot about Gimple, but I think that for all of his mistakes, he's actually super masterful. He's a very good writer. Anyway, season 1 of Fear, I thought, was actually very good in its unity and attention to realism, but then seasons 2 and 3 just felt all over the place. Plots would be picked up and dropped in two episodes, whole factions, villains would just contrive into existence and magically disappear. There were weird character deaths that felt totally random (Troy's, for example), and there was this overall inability to create a dynamic, long term arc for Madison. I never knew what to make of her. Nick felt like hero, tbh. She did not!
So anyway, I'm excited to keep going with Fear, because I really love Morgan's role, and I'm liking the show more now that it feels cohesive. I am also excited to fill in the blanks with TWD. I go back and forth with how Kang is attempting to channel her audience in these final seasons of TWD. She seems super generic in her post-episode breakdowns. I stopped watching them, because they always felt like they were oversimplifying things on purpose.
The show feels dual facing. Like on one hand, it's trying to cater to mass, broad appeal, and on the other, it's trying to reward those who look closely.
I feel lately, it's been leaning REALLY HEAVILY on the "look closely" angle, like the episode "Find Me" made this very clear to me. Upon a single watch, I thought the episode was really vague and boring. I disliked the Melissa/Norman scenes. I thought they were so stilted. But after watching it a couple more times and talking with you all about it so much, I've come to realize how actually *rich* it is, and how all of those things I previously overlooked were actually just super oblique. I personally struggle sometimes to judge exactly how much of what I'm seeing is meaningful, like I don't always know how much to expect from the writers. Am I inputting too much of my own interpretation, to make things seem *deep?* But talking to you guys has made me feel much more confident that this show is really worth digging into!! So thank you!!
@twdmusicboxmystery:
Great discussion, Ladies! I'm not sure I have anything terribly different to add. I agree with everything @wdway said. Personally, I think Gimple always thought Fear would eventually intersect with the main show. Maybe he didn't always know how or what the details would be. I agree that the first three seasons seem very scattered by comparison to the last three. But I also think it all centers around when Kirkman ended the comics, which was in 2019.
A lot of this is my opinion, but I think Gimple and the show knew about Kirkman ending the comics long before it became public knowledge, and they planned accordingly. The final issue didn't drop until 2019, and everyone was shocked when RK announced it was the last issue, but we didn't get any shocked statements from tptb. By that time, Rick had already exited the show and Morgan had gone to Fear.
So I think they started out Fear, anticipating that they might need a second vehicle to tell their story, especially when it comes to back story. Gimple had his story planned out long beforehand, but as you say, @galadrieljones, the flagship show is very focused on the intimate stories of TF, and there just isn't much room in the narrative to explain what the CRM is or how they came to be, or what they've been doing all this time. Gimple didn't want to muddle his narrative with all of that, so he created Fear, perhaps unsure how it would all shake out, but specifically so he'd have another way to do that without using up valuable screen time in TWD. When they realized the comic books were ending, everything solidified.
Andy stayed on longer, exiting in S9 rather than S8 as was originally planned (or so we're told), Morgan went to Fear, and all of sudden everything felt more cohesive. We suddenly had rumors of a third spinoff (TWB) which is built around the CRM.
Tumblr media
And even this whole nuclear storyline feels like it solidified around the same time. Like they wanted it to be told in the past (Fear) and then catch up to TF in some way in the future. So they did the time jump but knew Fear would remain, at least for a time, in the past. Again, they knew what they wanted to have happen, but didn't have room for it in TWD's narrative. This way, they could tell what you might call origin stories for future conflicts for TF, but without having to do all kinds of flashbacks or side stories in the flagship show.
And of course, Fear also presents opportunities to tell more stories about more characters, different places in this post-apocalyptic world we've all come to love, expand the universe which results in more money for them, and double down on the symbolism. There are probably other considerations as well that none of us have thought of.
As for how many people are actually picking up on it, I think tptb know that not many of the viewers appreciate the full scope of it. But I also don’t think that bothers them in the least. On the one hand, they’re telling the story they want to tell and are making so much money on this franchise that it really doesn’t matter if viewership numbers go down. It’s still the most in-demand show/franchise in the world and it’s not going anywhere.
But I also think they’re probably banking on people going back to watch old episodes once all the big reveals and endgames are finally understood. Kind of like watching The Sixth Sense once and then knowing you’ll have to watch it again to catch all the nuances. People will want to go back and watch Fear and TWB and of course re-watch early episodes of the main show to study and interpret the things we already are noticed in real time.
The show is definitely smarter than most people believe it to be, and Nicotero once famously said that they would tell the story they’d set up to tell, no matter what various members of the audience thought. That was aimed fairly obviously at Carylers who constantly threaten to abandon the show if Caryl isn’t endgame, and that was Nicotero telling them it wasn’t going to happen and if they don’t like it, there’s the door. But it can be applied to everything we’re discussing here. As you said, the helicopters have been around since season 1. I think Gimple always had a long-game plan for that storyline, and just couldn’t truly bring it to fruition until he was actually in charge.
Tumblr media
And finally, I’m hoping the spinoff will have kind of a combination vibe of the two shows. In many ways, it will have to be more like Fear because we’ll be dealing with much bigger, more sweeping storylines. But I also think that’s where we’ll finally get Bethyl, and see a Richonne reunion, and a lot of other beautiful things we’ve been waiting for. So, my hope is that it will have the best of both shows and combine the epic with the intimate. I have no idea if I actually answered any of your questions, lol. But I’ll stop rambling, now.
I hope some of you found this interesting. Thoughts?

Octavio Paz Lozano was born March 31, 1914. He was a Mexican poet and diplomat. For his body of work, he was awarded the 1981 Miguel de Cervantes Prize, the 1982 Neustadt International Prize for Literature, and the 1990 Nobel Prize in Literature.
A prolific author and poet, Paz published scores of works during his lifetime, many of which have been translated into other languages. His poetry has been translated into English by Samuel Beckett, Charles Tomlinson, Elizabeth Bishop, Muriel Rukeyser and Mark Strand. His early poetry was influenced by Marxism, surrealism, and existentialism, as well as religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism. His poem, "Piedra de sol" ("Sunstone"), written in 1957, was praised as a "magnificent" example of surrealist poetry in the presentation speech of his Nobel Prize.
His later poetry dealt with love and eroticism, the nature of time, and Buddhism. He also wrote poetry about his other passion, modern painting, dedicating poems to the work of Balthus, Joan Miró, Marcel Duchamp, Antoni Tàpies, Robert Rauschenberg, and Roberto Matta. As an essayist Paz wrote on topics such as Mexican politics and economics, Aztec art, anthropology, and sexuality. His book-length essay, The Labyrinth of Solitude (Spanish: El laberinto de la soledad), delves into the minds of his countrymen, describing them as hidden behind masks of solitude. Due to their history, their identity is lost between a pre-Columbian and a Spanish culture, negating either. A key work in understanding Mexican culture, it greatly influenced other Mexican writers, such as Carlos Fuentes. Ilan Stavans wrote that he was "the quintessential surveyor, a Dante's Virgil, a Renaissance man".
Paz wrote the play La hija de Rappaccini in 1956. The plot centers around a young Italian student who wanders about Professor Rappaccini's beautiful gardens where he spies the professor's daughter Beatrice. He is horrified to discover the poisonous nature of the garden's beauty. Paz adapted the play from an 1844 short story by American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne, which was also entitled "Rappaccini's Daughter". He combined Hawthorne's story with sources from the Indian poet Vishakadatta and influences from Japanese Noh theatre, Spanish autos sacramentales, and the poetry of William Butler Yeats. The play's opening performance was designed by the Mexican painter Leonora Carrington. In 1972, Surrealist author André Pieyre de Mandiargues translated the play into French as La fille de Rappaccini (Editions Mercure de France). First performed in English in 1996 at the Gate Theatre in London, the play was translated and directed by Sebastian Doggart and starred Sarah Alexander as Beatrice. The Mexican composer Daniel Catán adapted the play as an opera in 1992.
Paz's other works translated into English include several volumes of essays, some of the more prominent of which are Alternating Current (tr. 1973), Configurations (tr. 1971), in the UNESCO Collection of Representative Works, The Labyrinth of Solitude (tr. 1963), The Other Mexico (tr. 1972); and El Arco y la Lira (1956; tr. The Bow and the Lyre, 1973). In the United States, Helen Lane's translation of Alternating Current won a National Book Award. Along with these are volumes of critical studies and biographies, including of Claude Lévi-Strauss and Marcel Duchamp (both, tr. 1970), and The Traps of Faith, an analytical biography of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, the Mexican 17th-century nun, feminist poet, mathematician, and thinker.
His works include the poetry collections ¿Águila o sol? (1951), La Estación Violenta, (1956), Piedra de Sol (1957), and in English translation the most prominent include two volumes that include most of Paz in English: Early Poems: 1935–1955 (tr. 1974), and Collected Poems, 1957–1987 (1987). Many of these volumes have been edited and translated by Eliot Weinberger, who is Paz's principal translator into American English.
He won the 1977 Jerusalem Prize for literature on the theme of individual freedom. In 1980, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Harvard, and in 1982, he won the Neustadt Prize. Once good friends with novelist Carlos Fuentes, Paz became estranged from him in the 1980s in a disagreement over the Sandinistas, whom Paz opposed and Fuentes supported. In 1988, Paz's magazine Vuelta published criticism of Fuentes by Enrique Krauze, resulting in estrangement between Paz and Fuentes, who had long been friends.
A collection of Paz's poems (written between 1957 and 1987) was published in 1990. In 1990, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.
He died of cancer on April 19, 1998, in Mexico City.
Guillermo Sheridan, who was named by Paz as director of the Octavio Paz Foundation in 1998, published a book, Poeta con paisaje (2004) with several biographical essays about the poet's life up to 1998, when he died.
"The poetry of Octavio Paz", wrote the critic Ramón Xirau, "does not hesitate between language and silence; it leads into the realm of silence where true language lives."

I’ve been tossing in some code-switching stuff in the Begotten and Gymrat AUs.
The Gymrat!Twins are Mexican Americans. And the Begotten!Twins are like half Costa Rican, almost half Filipino, and some Mexican diaspora. (In latter case, their dad is second gen Costa Rican immigrant, their mom is a third gen Filipino/Mexican immigrant.)
So I’m working on that whole platonic Gymrat!Prinxiety fic that starts off with both of them as each other’s enemies.
And was just thinking abt the right interjection in Spanish to use in this phrase
"My God! Why did Remus have to hook up with someone like you (Virgil)?”
"¡Dios mio!" is more like "Oh God!" which is more anxious/surprised
"¡Cielos!" is more like "Good heavens!" more of a surprised tone
"¡Santo Dios!" is more like "good God" a closer interjection to what i want here
aaand then there's shit like "¡Carajo!" that can be used to mean fuck/shit/damn-it... as an angry/surprised interjection... if so much more vulgar (in other contexts it can refer to dicks or nothing "i can't see shit!" and a perjorative in Latin American Spanish)
(I’ve been cross-referencing w/ Spanish dictionaries and language blogs to try to convey what I want. I try to make sure Google Translate isn’t my only research stop, because I know it can get extremely janky. And it’s important to mindful of dialect-specific items.)

I'm sorry to bother you but I read your fic Powerless and I noticed something that bothered me a bit. I know you're latina, you've said it and I'm not questioning that, but I think you're unintentionally helping stereotypes spread by making a character look at another once and immediately be able to tell she's latina (Katrina). Since Latin America are 33 countries with a great diversity, it would be impossible to know for sure unless you're referring to the Mexican stereotype. 1/3
And that's okay, don't get me wrong, I'm all for representation and Mexicans are latinxs too, but maybe use "Mexican" instead of latinx? Otherwise you're just perpetuating the stereotypes, and you did the same thing twice in your story through two different perspectives (Virgil and Kaimi right after meeting Katrina). I'm latina, but not Mexican, and that was the only thing keeping me from fully enjoying the fic. It was amazing, but that kept making me feel uncomfortable. 2/3
I hope this doesn't come off as rude, because I don't intend it that way, and I really liked the story apart from what I just pointed out, I just wanted to talk to you about it. Have a nice day! 3/3
Hey there!  Thank you so much for reaching out; I know it can be daunting to approach someone like this.
I wrote Powerless in third person omniscient intrusive, where the narrator will often interject with things the characters don’t know (like talking about how Kaimi and Katrina didnt notice sand on the floor) or snap to focus on someone else’s POV in the same scene (like when Patton thinks about how he knows Logan and Virgil have been lying to them).  While I can’t tell you exactly what I was thinking while writing this scene (I wrote it over three years ago :p), it was likely just another example of this – where mentioning that she’s Latina is more for the audience’s benefit than an example of Virgil/Kaimi’s thoughts, especially since I introduced/intended her as a one-off reference to Dreadnaught by April Daniels.  (Where the local vigilante is also a cowgirl Latina).
Still, it’s not my place to say what is / isn’t okay when it makes someone else uncomfortable, so I’d love to modify this.
I don’t quite see how calling her “Mexican” instead of Latina would solve the issue, since this would also fall into the stereotype you’re discussing.  (I am Mexican-American and can 100% tell you we do not all look the same) But especially since the character is actually El Salvadoran and Pinoy (as discussed in the author’s notes / when she visits her parents).
Would you prefer her introduction to focus more on her appearance?  Something along the lines of “There, reclined on the concrete lip of the roof, lazily puffing on a cigarette and taking in Virgil with half-lidded eyes, was a muscular, sharp-featured woman dressed like a cowboy.”?
Again, thanks for reaching out!

More Florist/Tattoo Artist AU Headcanons
I want to talk about this more. So, for the characters themselves:
Patton is a white, cis man and gay, has sleeve tattoos, many covering his back and a few on his feet and calves
He is about 6 feet tall, has a strong built, a little gut and somehow never manages to be clean shaven, even after he shaves
Patton comes from a very religious Christian background, but his parents cut off all ties with their community, as the little twelve-year-old tried to ran away one Sunday evening after church, because he could never be a good son because he liked guys
His mother died when he was nineteen and that threw him in a depression, where he also started cutting
He dropped out of college, started therapy and became a tattoo artist, which eventually led him to the little town they’re all in today
The others are under the cut because this got too long, sorry^^
Logan is a trans man and gay, he is not sure what ethnic group his parents exactly belonged to (some mixture from the middle east and east Europe (probably Poland and Czech Republic), both had been born in the US)
He is 5’ 4’’ tall, has a slim build and often wears shirts which make him look a little boxier, (also, he cannot grow a beard which he despises despite not even wanting to have facial hair)
His parents and older sister were rather uncaring when he came out as trans and he eventually just cut ties with them when he went off to university with a scholarship. There he worked hard and eventually financed himself to get gender therapy and along the way top surgery
He has not talked to his family in years, but found out over an old friend of his that his parents had passed away which left him with mixed feelings
Janus is a black, cis man and gay, has a big birthmark under his left eye and a strong limp on his left leg from a badly healed broken leg, when he fell out of a window back when he was around eight
He is 5’ 8’’ tall, some fat rolls on his hips and has started to go bald, which he covers with a bowler hat
He is the youngest of at least nine siblings (I haven’t decided yet) and his oldest sister had a kid around the time when he was stuck at hospital with his broken leg
His family lives several generations under one roof and the little baby boy of his sister was often brought to him when he had to stay inside and rest his leg after the accident
He often played and cared for him and as they grew up, Janus became more and more of his care figure until Virgil finally asked him to help him open a pet store/rescue after which Janus became Virgil’s business partner
He always loved jazz and theatre and got a saxophone when he was around ten and plays it ever since
He’s pretty talented, practices often and loves it and if it was not for the harsh music industry, he might have considered a career as a saxophonist
But he is happy in the pet store, supporting his nephew and playing in a bar every Friday and playing in a local theatre group
Virgil is also black, not certain of what gender is but runs with he/him for the time being, doesn’t get behind sexuality either (might be aspec) but is very certain he’s aromantic
He takes after his father and is 6’ 6’’ tall, lanky and is quite fit because he jogs regularly
He early on had problems with social anxiety
First, his family had trouble understanding this, since he behaved just like the other kids at home and had no trouble talking and playing with his cousins or aunts and uncles
When his grandmother then witnessed him having a panic attack when he was twelve in a grocery store after being unable to answer the retail worker if he wanted a bag for the groceries, her attitude changed immediately and she had the whole family help him out
(Btw Virgil’s grandmother/Janus’s mother is awesome)
He didn’t go to college but volunteered at an animal rescue for a year
After that he brought up the idea of opening a pet store to his grandmother and somehow the family started looking around for a space for Virgil to start and help him getting the money to start up
Through the whole part he had always had Janus to his side and he is very glad that he didn’t have to move into a new place without anybody he knew
Remus is an American-Mexican, cis man, polyamorous and pansexual, and somehow everybody thinks he is older than he actually is
He’s 6’ 1’’ and rather slim and most of the time is a little paler than looks healthy
He has a collection of beanies; the orange one he always wears in the shop and actually likes having quite a colourful closet, and once dreamt of becoming a fashion designer
He has lost part of his hearing in a car accident he and Roman had when they were 17
They had run away, because they had come out as queer, which their parents did not approve of
After the hospital stay, they were brought to a foster family and decided after they turned 18 to both take an apprenticeship as florists
Flowers and gardening were always a passion of Remus and it helped him to work with plants to feel less isolated
When they were finished the apprenticeship, they got a van, in which they lived and sold flowers and bouquets from for some months until they managed to get a room from which they could start a business
They did this for a few years, while getting more and more a hang of how to live alone and make their business work, so they could afford a better store and location
During all of it Remus has a lot of intrusive as well as suicidal thoughts
Roman is Mexican-American, possibly a nonbinary man (he’s not quite sure), and gay
He’s 6’ 1’’ and a little chubby as he is the one in charge of cooking and tends to stress eat after many years of not having enough food at hand
People always find him charming and he is a great salesman and huge flirt (which will be Janus’s demise)
He loves theatre and singing and always hoped he could get to Broadway but let his dreams wait after the accident where he decided to stick to his brother and make a career as a florist
He likes the job well but is not truly fulfilled with it which he denies constantly
He is rather co-dependent on Remus and keeps on smiling and working to get both of them to a better place, not really taking care of himself
He was the driver when they had the accident and despite that Roman still finds driving very calming and when everything gets too much will enter his car and just be gone for a while driving around
He does not touch his handy during driving and will have it on silent on the back seat
@varthandi look what you did! Look! Are you proud? I hope you are proud🥺

TOP 10 FAVORITE SUPERHEROES
THANKS FOR TAGGING ME: @superkingofpriderock
Tumblr media
01. OGON BATTO (ALSO KNOWN AS: OGON BAT, GOLDEN BAT, FANTASMAGÓRICO, FANTOMAS AND FANTAMAN)
Originated in the medium of kamishibai (japanese street paper theater) in 1931, and later having expanded to the mediums of three live actions movies and one anime series in the 50s and 60s, Ogon Batto is a supersheroe created by Suzuki Ishiro and Takeo Nagamatsu. A being from ancient Atlantis who was sent forward in time 10,000 years to battle evil forces threatening the present day, he lives in a fortress in the Japanese Alps. His superpowers include superhuman strength, invulnerability, and the ability to fly, and his weak spot is dehidration.  Ogon Batto has an evil counterpart known as Kurayami Bat (暗闇バット "Dark Bat") and his main enemy is Dr. Erich Nazō (ナゾー), the leader of a crime syndicate bent on world domination, who wears a black costume and mask with bat-like ears, a red eye and a blue eye. To some of the brazilian audiences, he is kown with the name Fantomas, trough the 1960s dubbed anime series.
Tumblr media
02. THE WONDER TWINS
Characters created for the cartoon Super Friends by the creative team of Hannah-Barbera, the twin brothers Zan and Jayna’s dinamic worked like this: They would punch each other’s hands, fusing the rings they used, and say “Wonder Twins: Activate”! So, Zan would take the form of anything water related (vapours, ice, etc.) while Jayna would take the form of an animal. The reason they are on the list? If you say “Super Gêmeos: Ativar” (portuguese for Wonder Twins: Activate) to anyone who was a child in Brazil during the late 1990 and early 2000s, we will know what are you talking about, and sweet childhood nostalgia will manifest.
Tumblr media
03. EL CHAPULIN COLORADO
Remember the mexican actor dressed up as a bee in The Simpsons? Yup, he is a parody of this little fella. Writen and acted by the comedian Roberto Gómez Bolaños in the 1970s to be a superheroe that represented the latin american audiences, El Chapulin Colorado is a guy who, despite being very bumbling and frightfull, always appear offering the services of his shrinking pills, his vinyll little antennas, his bionical hammer, a book containing a story that he feels has a relevant moral and his friendship to anyone who is in need and says the phrase: “Oh! Quién Podrá Defenderme” (Oh! Who Can Defend Me).
Tumblr media
04. STATIC SHOCK
Virgil Hawkins is a fourteen-year-old honors student at Dakota Union High School who gains his powers by a mutagenic gas explosion, dubbed "the Big Bang" by the media, which grants numerous residents of Dakota superpowers; those affected are likewise dubbed "Bang Babies". Virgil lives with his widowed father Robert Hawkins, a social worker and the head of the Freeman Community Center, and his sister Sharon Hawkins, a university student and hospital volunteer. His mother Jean Hawkins died a few years prior, the victim of a stray bullet while she worked as a paramedic during a riot; her death causes Virgil to develop an intense fear/hatred of guns. This guy deserves his movie, Hollywood!
Tumblr media
05. ASTÉRIX AND OBÉLIX
Created by the team of french comic artists René Goscinny and Alberto Uderzo, Astérix and Obélix are the two greatest warriors from a undomitable village of celtic gauls, who resist the invasion of the romans led by Julius Caesar with the help of a powerfull  magic potion made by the druid Getafix. Astérix is the little man, whose greatest strenght is on his inteligence, cunning and witty. Obélix is the big man, gentle and innocent, who wants nothing in life but to eat delicious wild boars, find the love of a good lady and punch some romans in the face. The dwo has been around not only in comics, but also in animated and live action movies, and show no sign of slowing down and stopping to have adventures. They even have their own theme park in Paris!
Tumblr media
06. JUSPION (ALSO KNOWN AS JASPION)
Kyojuu Tokusou Juspion ("Megabeast Investigator Juspion") is the fourth in the Metal Heroes series of Tokusatsu shows. The series revolves around space orphan Juspion and his eccentric android assistant Anri, who are sent by old wizard/scientist Ejin to destroy Satangorth and his army of Megabeasts (kyojuu), as prophesied in The Galaxy Bible. He has a giant robot at his disposal and is followed around by Team Pet Miya. While it was a success in it’s native Japan, when it was broadcast here in Brazil in the 1980s, it got extremely popular, being a mark in the surgence of geeks for japanese pop culture in the country.
Tumblr media
07.  JIRAIYA
Sekai Ninja Sen Jiraiya ("World Ninja War Jiraiya"), also known as Ninja Olympiad, is the seventh Metal Heroes series.  Jiraiya (real name:Tōha Yamaji) is an elite ninja warrior from the Togakure style of Ninpō. His mentor and foster father Tetsuzan Yamaji, the 34th Grandmaster of the Togakure School, has trained him for the day the ancient Yōma Clan will return. Sure enough, the clan, led by Oninin Dokusai, arise with their army of evildoers in order to seize Pako, a mysterious treasure which came from outer space over 2000 years ago which is said to have power equiparable to the Sun. With the help of his family, and an army of international ninja heroes, Jiraiya must stand tall against the evil ones. If Juspion started the phenomenon of interest in japanese Tokusatsu heroes on brazilian audiences, Jiraiya consolidated it. To the point that “Virado no Jiraiya” (Turned into Jiraiya) has become a popular brazilian, meaning that someone is mad at something. The fact that his actor Takumi Tsutsui constantly comes to visit Brazil also helps a lot in the popularity of the character.
Tumblr media
08. THE CHANGEMAN
Dengeki Sentai Changeman (Blitzkrieg Squadron Changeman) is the ninth Super Sentai series, running from 1985 to 1986. In order to save the world from threat of invasion by the Great Star League Gozma, a special force called the Earth Defense Force is set up. One day, the Gozma launch an attack on them and have them on the ropes. That is, until the Earth itself grants five officers the power of the Earth Force, which lets them become the Changemen. Before the Power Rangers came to dominate the world’s pop culture, there four five Super Sentai that received a brazilian-portuguese dub and broadcast: Changeman, Flashman, Google-V and Maskman. Changeman was the first, and is my number one favorite.
Tumblr media
09. THE BLACK PANTHER
Guys, is The Black Panther. Do i need to say more? Ok, i will a little something: If you didn’t watched this film, go do it. Righ now!
Wakanda Forever, king T’Challa.
Tumblr media
10. ZORRO
Really, that mark says everything. Is freaking Zorro! He is one of the reasons the superheroe genre is what it is and is what we know. Without him, probably a lot of those guys wouldn’t have existed.
