It’s with quiet amusement that Meg watches that unmistakable green glow fill Zag’s room. The flash is brief, the perfect complement to the red drapes and tiles, and she thinks it’s unfair that she has to walk here when Thanatos can simply appear.
He isn’t surprised, but he didn’t expect her here; his usually solemn expression slackens, first to process her presence, then to take her in. She raises an eyebrow and relaxes further into the plush lounge chair. She claimed it for her own long ago. It was Thanatos who said its blues and golds looked out of place in Zag’s room without her.
“He told me he ran into you,” he tells her, making no effort to even dare suggest he’d rather be anywhere but floating in the center of the room. Ever so formal.
She pulls up one leg to create enough space for him to sit. “Should be in Elysium by now.”
It’s all the invitation he needs. He glides to her and sits beside her with all the grace Nyx bestowed him. Perhaps death should be heavier, but the seat barely sinks under his weight. “On his way out. He was almost to the champion when I met him.”
He always looks softer in profile—ominous to those who don’t know him, or only know of him, especially still holding his scythe; reserved and guarded to those who know him better. She presses her outstretched leg to his back and says, “Won’t be long, then. Aren’t you off the clock?” He looks at her in question, and she nods toward his other hand. “You’re still carrying your scythe.”
“You’re still holding your whip.”
She smirks. “It isn’t strictly for professional use.”
He laughs softly, but he doesn’t set the tool aside.
Thanatos isn’t effortless to read. He requires a careful eye, a tuned ear—attentive and intimate knowledge to see the tension in the set of his shoulders beneath his hood and pauldron, to see what he hides in his expression. She sits up and turns his face to her with her whip, and he doesn’t resist. Reserved and guarded he may be, but he knows when he’s been seen. “You’re tired,” she whispers.
His smile is one of resignation. “Is it truly that obvious?”
She scoffs.
She swings her outstretched leg over him, stands, and takes his scythe. It’s both lighter and heavier than she expects it to be, a weight he needs to learn to set down every now and then. Perhaps Dusa could help him learn some restraint.
His skin is so much colder than Zag’s. His jawbone, sharper. She rubs her thumb over his cheek and brushes a strand of hair out of his face. He looks at her so differently than Zag looks at either of them. Zag melts in their hands, eager and flustered and so alive it’s palpable. But Thanatos is patient and calm, steady no matter how she touches him or speaks to him. She trails her fingers down his jaw and lets them linger on his chin before she pulls away. “Come here,” she says, and he follows like a guardian.
