Annette Elaine McCord was born in 1969 with music in her heart. It's hard not to be when you're born in the summer of love. Her parents were young and passionate musicians, and for the first few years of her life Nettie grew surrounded by records, instruments, and family jam sessions.

When she was around four, her mother left her and her father. Nettie never knew the reason; her father was tight lipped about it, and went from gently persuading Nettie away from questions about her mother to shutting down and getting angrier in response the older she got. Eventually, she learned to drop the subject altogether.

At first, Nettie was a bright and polite girl -- a good student, a good kid, and a very talented guitarist. Even after her father put down his instruments and took on, what he called, ❝ real ❞ work, Nettie always harbored the dream of making a life out of what she loved most: music. This lead to a schism between father and daughter that only got worse with age.

By the time she was thirteen, her father had changed from vaguely absent to unreasonably strict. She tried to live up to his expectations he set -- the grades, the ever earlier curfews, the taking of her records and her musical memorabilia, not allowing her to speak with boys -- then girls -- then anyone. You're going to have a real future, he'd tell her, and she'd try -- she'd try.

Under the surface, Nettie got angrier. Her façade was growing thinner by the day. In high school, she was ostracized as the weird kid. The teacher's pet who snapped sometimes. The girl who wasn't allowed to go anywhere. The total bummer.

Until she met him.

At fifteen, Nettie was at her breaking point. That's when James swooped in -- popular, handsome, and offering her a way to cope. First it was weed. Then it was some harder stuff. Then it was kissing under the bleachers and skipping class. Then it was Nettie sneaking out her window at night and driving around in his car with the top down. It was feeling alive for the first time in a long time.

The point of no return was an argument with her father that resulted in him taking her guitar -- the one he'd given her, the one she'd had since before her mother left -- and smashing it into unrecognizable pieces. When she left home that night, Nettie never returned.

She'd hope to stay with James -- he'd told her she could. But James had his parents and his little siblings and his home had a white picket fence around it. But that's okay -- he knew someone. A friend of a friend of his older sister with an apartment in the city. Which was a room and a mattress, but it was something. It was free. And by work minimum wage jobs, she could save up for a new guitar and do a little busking to earn some tips. Try to make her way.

Nettie McCord became unrecognizable over the course of that year. She threw herself into the life of a true rocker. She played whatever club would take her at the three am slot; she started a tattoo sleeve that she never quite finished but always cherished; she collected piercings whenever she felt she needed to be closer to her body. She was determined to turn herself in a work of art, and that was the silver lining in everything. She was living her dream, finally and truly.

She was just lonely.

Eventually, James graduated. He'd be moving out -- they could make it work together. The hollowed out parts inside of her left by the people who'd left -- her family, her friends -- would start to heal. Her future was within her grasp.

She more than waited for his call. She called him -- she tried. Eventually, it was James' father who told her to stay the hell away from his son, if she was the girl corrupting his boy. Nettie was frozen, hands around the landline. She stared at her guitar, the posters on her walls, and thought of her father -- of the kids in school who whispered loud enough to hear, of James who'd promised that he was coming for her. Her mother. Of all the promises to her that someone else had broken, leaving her standing clutching the other half with the naïveté of a child.

She hung up on him when he threatened to call her father and the police, and for two weeks she barely left her room.

Nettie never knew how the fire started. She didn't know that the emergency services ruled it suspicious. She didn't know if anyone else was caught in the blaze. Hell, after her death, she didn't remember her own name. When Nettie McCord died and Ember McClain took over, there was nothing but shadows of her past -- vague memories of the boy who took advantage of her, the family who abandoned her, the people who never took her seriously. The tangible things -- her name, her childhood home, the good memories among the bad -- seemed to burn up with her previous body.

But does she need her memories ? She has a guitar, and she has power now. They'll never forget her ever again.

Chapter One

I look out windows on my bus ride to school. I wonder what lies in wait for me and my family. I may be a simple teenage girl to some but, to others, I am a girl soon to be deported back to my homeland of Cuba. I look like every other white American ( light tan skin, Long Curly Silky Black hair, Eyes Blue like the ocean). To my friends, I am Sofia Castillo but to people like I.C.E., I'm just another Cuban being shipped back there. My family has money and was accused of a crime they didn't commit. I can stay here because I am a citizen. My older siblings and parents are not. They immigrated here and got me citizenship so I could have a better life. The only downside is that I am 15 just had my quince. The only issue with that is the fact I am still a minor according to the great Estados Unidos.

Let me be clear about what I am saying, I am very grateful to the USA but I am extremely pissed off about how my family either needs to plead guilty or split up. I am brushing away droplets of water off of my face as the bus pulls up to the school. It is a private school for the rich and misunderstood. I personally don't know how I ended up here so let us start where it began.

She found Henry waiting in their office for her. She had sent him a text earlier that day after leaving Russell Jackson’s office that they needed to talk. She’d been a walking zombie ever since, her mind couldn’t wrap around what he was asking her to do.

“Hi babe,” Henry greeted her with a kiss.

Henry’s touch was the first thing to pull her out of her trance. “Russell wants me to run for President.”

Henry stared at her, that was not what he was expecting.

“Henry? Hello? I really need you to say something. I’m freaking out here and you’re supposed to be the calm one between us.”

“Well, that’s the second biggest news I’ve heard all day.”

“I know-wait what? Second biggest news? What could be bigger than that?”

Now wasn’t the best time to tell her but he couldn’t keep this secret. “Jason’s joining the military.”

“WHAT?!” No this was a joke, some new philosophy method to make big decisions or something. Shock someone with bigger news that’s fake to make her news seem smaller.

“I know. Believe my heart just about stopped when he told me.”

She saw nothing but honesty in his eyes. Oh my god it was true. Her baby wants to join the military. She started to pace around the room, shedding her jacket and pulling at her shirt. It was suddenly very hot in the room. “Why? What happened to railing against the establishment? I mean as frustrating as that was at times it sure as hell won’t get him killed.”

What was with McCord men and running towards danger instead of away from it? Why couldn’t her boys find some other purpose that didn’t involve putting their life on the line. Like father like son.

“I think what happened to Sarah affected him more than he let on. It inspired him in some way.”

Jason’s cousin, Sarah, was caught in an IED explosion overseas on a routine training exercise six months earlier. She was still in a coma.

“It should make him want to anarchy more not run towards the danger.”

“Anarchy isn’t a verb.” She stopped in her tracks and glared at him, was he really picking at her words right now. “Right, sorry now isn’t the time.”

“I know we’re a military family, you and your siblings, my brother was half apart of one. I spent my time overseas too but we can’t let him do this. You have to talk him out of it. I don’t care how big of hypocrites we are. He is not doing this.”

Henry pulled her into his arms, holding her until she calmed down. “I’ll talk to him. Okay, don’t worry. I got it.”

Maureen had been pissy when Henry called to tell them he’d be bringing Elizabeth to the McCord family reunion- but they’ve been dating for over two years, he’s had a ring in his sock drawer for over six months, and every time he looks at her, home sings loudly in his chest. His bratty, overbearing older sister can be as sour-mouthed as she wanted; Queen Elizabeth, as she had unkindly nicknamed her, was here to stay.

Elizabeth, though, is graceful and gracious as ever from the moment they arrive at his childhood home. She helps his mother around the house, she helps his father load the truck with supplies- she does his sister Erin’s hair into an intricate braid that Erin won’t stop praising, eyes alight with happiness as she gazes in the mirror. Henry watches as she captures the hearts of the rest of his family members, Maureen standing in the wings with a disproving look marring her mouth.

“Do you think she’ll ever like me?” Elizabeth asks as they pull up to the park where the reunion was taking place; they’d arrived early to set it up, the rest of the family members meant to trickle in over the next few hours. Henry parks his truck, turning to look at her and cupping her chin in his palm, stroking gentle fingers over her delicate face.

“I think she’ll always be wary of your money, and I don’t think there’s anything either of us can do about that. But I love you, and I want you here- and I know you belong here. So she’ll come around,” Henry tells her, watching as her lips quirk into a small smile before he leans forward, pressing his mouth to hers. “I love you, Elizabeth.”

“And I love you,” she replies, lifting a hand to touch his cheek gently. “Come on- let’s go help.”

Erin drags Elizabeth over to help her and Shane set up the games while Henry goes with her father to set up the grill- Maureen and his mother start to set out the decorations, deciding to wait on the food until people started to arrive. He watches her interact with his younger siblings, unable to hold in the smile watching her creates- he was so hopelessly in love with the blonde woman twenty feet away, laughing with his siblings.

As time passes, more of his family appears- aunts and uncles and cousins and family friends. He leaves the grilling to his father and goes to stand with Elizabeth- he knew that while she had grown more comfortable with his immediate family, this many new faces would be overwhelming for her. He’s stunned, though, at how effortlessly charming she is- continually amazed at the marvel of a woman he’d fallen for.

He’s pulled away by his mother, calling him over to help with something- when he comes back, Elizabeth has the baby of one of his cousins in her arms, and he has to stop in his tracks for a moment. The image of her, standing there with an infant in her arms, hits him like a ton of bricks and the want wells up inside of him like a physical ache; all he can think about is Elizabeth holding their child, a child they’d made like that.

It’s a future he wants more than anything in the entire world.

Henry files that away as he makes his way back over to her just as Elizabeth is handing the baby back, brushing her fingers over tiny little fingers with a soft smile. She leans into him, arm around his waist, and he drops a kiss to her temple.

“Henry- Elizabeth! Come on, we’re making teams for games!” Erin calls, and Henry looks down at her, grinning. He pushes her behind him a little bit, bending his knees, and Elizabeth laughs.

“Are you offering me a piggyback ride, Henry?” she asks, and he nods.

“Come on, I give excellent piggyback rides, Erin always said so,” he tells her, and she shakes her head fondly, but jumps up, securing her arms around his neck as he grasps her thighs as they loop around his hips. He began to walk, her weight nothing on his back, and Elizabeth leaned forward, kissing his ear.

She couldn’t see his smile, but she pressed her lips to the stretch of his jaw, her own mouth pulling into a smile she couldn’t deny.
