Chocolate Milk with Extra Syrup

A McCord Family drabble.

Ally didn't want to get up. Not today, not when her best friend was in the hospital, not when she felt completely responsible for all her pain. Everyone kept telling her it wasn't her fault, but how could it not be? So instead of getting up and going down to breakfast she closed her eyes again and hid under her covers.

She wasn't sure how long she'd been asleep when she felt a gentle hand caressing her shoulder and a warm body pressed against her. She turned to see her mom laying on top of her covers with a strange expression on her face. Elizabeth wrapped Ally in a tight hug and kissed her forehead. It reminded Ally of thunderstorms on the farm, of nights she was scared and wandered into her parents bedroom, of feeling safe the second her mom wrapped her arms around her. But somehow, today, today it didn't feel quite right.

"Hey noodle," her mother sounded worried and Ally couldn't help but feel guilty. "Do you want some breakfast?" Ally pulled the covers tighter around herself and Elizabeth's brow knit into tight crease.

Henry had told her not to push, but she was afraid. She wanted her little girl to be alright, she wanted her to smile and laugh and not be weighed down by fear and regret. She knew food wasn't going to make that all happen, but right now it seemed like a very important first step. So she pressed on.

She leaned forward, stroked her daughter's head and whispered conspiratorially, "dad made your favorite pancakes."

No response.

She leaned in closer and began to stroke Ally's back over the covers.

"With chocolate chips and blueberries." She felt Ally shift and the faintest hint of a smile ghosted across Elizabeth's face.

Elizabeth wrapped her arms around Ally and whispered in her ear, or at least what she assumed was Ally's ear.

"And vanilla ice cream with caramel on top."

Ally's head appeared from under the covers. "And chocolate milk with extra syrup?"

Elizabeth smiled at her daughter. "Whatever you want baby." She kissed her on the forehead and squeezed her tight.
