I started vnc way back when there was only one volume, stopped, and only restarted it last week 🙈 since then, I have reread it twice and will again, once I'm done with exams, as it has turned me insane. And since no one I know reads it, I just wanted to ask what your thoughts are on my theory that the reason not 'didn't reach out to vanitas' thus leading to his death is because of Ruthven compulsion on him? Cuzco after the 'ill never set you free'thing, I just can't see noel not reaching out tonight purpose. Your blog is a joy to read through, and I love your meta!

Hello!! Thank you so much! It's always great to see another person having fun with my favorite manga :D.

My thoughts on Vanitas's eventual death are. complicated. If we keep going down the path we're on now, I honestly suspect Vanitas's death is going to be more assisted suicide than murder. IE, Vanitas asks for Noé to kill him because it's preferable to the alternative.

Per Ruthven's compulsion, I definitely think it's going to come up, and I do like the idea of Ruthven trying to force Noé to hurt or kill Vanitas, but I don't think it's going to be how Vanitas dies. In a way, I think that would feel somewhat cheap.

Noé killing Vanitas because of his oath to Ruthven would make sense on a plot level. It's a nice, logical explanation for why Noé would kill someone he so clearly adores. I can see why it's a lot of people's theory! However, that explanation wouldn't really deliver on an emotional level. It's just not interesting for Noé's characterization.

For one thing, making Noé kill Vanitas when he's not in control of himself would strip away all of Noé's agency. With VnC's opening chapter, Mochijun sets us up so that the entire time we're reading, we're asking ourselves "but why will Noé kill him?" It's a big source of intrigue and suspense. And to me, finally resolving that suspense with "It's not his fault! He was artificially forced to!" feels like a major letdown. It adds nothing to Noé's character. It's answering that all-important "why" with "There is no reason why. He didn't actually want to." I think that would be a cop-out.

Through that denial of agency, I think this ending would also risk losing out on a lot of potential character development for Noé. The core of Noé and Louis's tragedy is that Noé desperately wanted to save Louis, but the only kind of salvation Louis wanted from him was death, and Noé couldn't give him that.

Now Noé has another person close to him that is also seeking salvation through death. If Noé kills Vanitas, but he's not in control of himself when he does, that misses out on a big opportunity. Has Noé come to understand salvation through death? Has his worldview changed since Louis made that request of him? Does he have it in him to kill a loved one if that's what they ask? If Vanitas's death is forced by Ruthven, then we're much less likely to get answers to those questions.

Personally, my favorite hope/theory for how Ruthven's order will play out is the idea that Ruthven will order Noé to hurt/stop/kill Vanitas, but Vanitas will manage to snap Noé out of it in the same way Noé broke Vanitas's self-hypnosis in the amusement park. There's nothing I love more than a gay little parallel.

I can see a scenario where Ruthven's oath is what pushes Vanitas close to death? Maybe Noé will be ordered to try to kill Vanitas, and that will set off whatever horrible chain of events pushes Vanitas to ask for death that final time. But even if Ruthven does order Noé to hurt Vanitas (which is a big if), I don't think it will be what causes the killing blow.

it's all @uovoc's fault!! they told me about the anime while they were watching it for the first time, in such glowing terms i had to know what all the fuss was about. and then i mainlined the whole thing in like two weeks and spedran the entire spectrum of human emotions AND somehow came out the other side obsessed with the exorcists, which i do not think they were expecting when they recommended it to me. such is life.

I was thinking about how hug-y opla luffy is and I realised that if you strictly consider instances in which he meant to hug someone and not just hold them (so take out every single time he's picked up someone and either lugged them around or flung them across a battlefield) in the manga he hasn't actually hugged that many people at all, has he

Went skimming thru late trimax For Reasons, got caught up reading the Legato fight, realized things about the fight that I never had before & went WOW, I kind of want to write an analysis post right now!

Felt the same kind of insanity grip me, however momentarily, that fueled all my analysis posts however many months ago. Too tired to actually word things coherently right now, but...

I May or may not have a full(ish?) analysis of the Legato & Vash fight a la style of This post analyzing the Trigun: Multiple Bullets fight that got unexpectedly kind of popular. People seemed to really appreciate that one, & I even had some ppl saying it could be cool if I did that for others?

A while back, someone mentioned in the tags of my Darktail and Onestar post that swapping Sol's ShadowClan plotline with Darktail's WindClan one would have been interesting, and ngl. I actually sorta want to do that in my au... like Sol isn't Onestar's kid, but he goes to WindClan during Po3 where Onestar is probably near his lowest, hes deeply paranoid and resentful at what he was put through in Starlight and he's starting to lash out more, and Sol takes advantage of that and makes him become even more disillusioned with clan culture and StarClan. Sol coordinates the Eclipse Battle as a way to manipulate the clans into destroying one another, and WindClan is at the forefront. Maybe he even convinces Onestar that dismantling the clans is what's best for him. Idk though, throwing spaghetti at the wall here

#ngl i do not remember sol at all sdklfsdlfdf so maybe i shouldnt be talking about him rn #i like his design... and i dont remember anything he did besides steal babies #and he made blackstar atheist that one time through his raw homosexuality #skimming the wiki and hes just so bitter abt skyclan dumping him that he made it everyone else's problem. ig i can respect that #he doesnt seem like a typical rogue character where hes just born evil or whatever. hes just some guy throwing a tantrum #that being said... i feel like i can throw a bit more meat on him #i like those aus where hes midnights apprentice. and since midnight is a product of the tunnels in rv #and since sol is already associated with the tunnels according to the wiki. maybe i can connect him to the tunnel lore #i like his backstory so he'll still be a kittypet that lives with skyclan for a bit and then leaves #maybe he becomes like... a cultist for the tunnel or something. like he realizes theres something in there far more powerful than starclan #and he tries to either get the tunnels to take him and make him as powerful as the Trios and he basically becomes the spot from spiderverse #where he starts as kind of pathetic and a joke but develops into a legitimate threat. that or he tries to get the clans to join the tunnels #and he tries to sacrifice them to it? idk. again throwing spaghetti at the walls #maybe i should read the skyclan manga.... get an idea of what to do #i am not rereading po3 yet. lmao.#razorverse

Something I always think about when it comes to Diavolo in the manga and anime is his tattoos. The anime heavily simplifies his tattoos down and it makes me kind of miss the complex design that the manga's had (though I agree with the decision to simplify them and obviously wouldn't wish that on the animators lol). Mostly, I like the red streaks in the manga- it's neat.

Though I have no clue why Diavolo of all people would be okay with having extremely identifying marks on his arms... but I guess it doesn't matter since he's erased his appearance from everywhere and even when the gang got a shot of his face they couldn't trace it back to anything.

IT'S TIME! I'm super late, and I lurked in the Trigun Bookclub tag long enough, I'm committing to it!

This will be my 3rd time reading the manga this year. The first time was with my Dark Horse books, the second with Overhaul, and this time I'll be reading @trigun-manga-overhaul again. (Thank you Overhaul Team for your hard work!)

I'm not sure I can offer anything new that hasn't been covered. Maybe I'll just go off on what I liked and found interesting about it.

I'm no essayist, many have put into words what I've thought far more eloquently than I ever could. But if something piques my interest I'll try! I put (almost) all of my skill points in art and comics, so I'll probably pick out visuals or paneling.

If I'm feeling up for it, and have the time, I may color some of my favorite pages or panels. (I'm a Trigun old and this series heavily influenced my creative taste and I think it'd be a nice hommage.)

I got carried away with other things but I'm working up my vol 1 post! Excited to be here for my 3rd round. :3
