How many works do you have on ao3? 63. i need to calm down.

What's your total ao3 word count? 747 502. i need to calm down.

What fandoms do you write for? the vampire diaries, shadow & bone, avatar: the last airbender, star wars, marvel. also, that one suez canal x ever given fic, and that one goncharov fic.

Top five fics by kudos: A Queen's Gamble (you know it's an old one if the title is capitalised lmao), make them bow., the fate makes for a lousy poet., where the heart moves the stones, nyctophilia.

Do you respond to comments? i try. i am not very good at it, but every now and then i sit down, crack my knuckles, and go about emptying my poor inbox.

What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? the end. is like ... the only fic i ever wrote that ended unhappily.

What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? see above, lol, literally everything else. i'm a wuss.

Do you get hate on fics? i mean ... not really? i would mostly classify the rude things i got as entitlement rather than hate. the impression i usually got was that those people liked my writing style, or the plot, or characterisation, or whatever--there was just one thing or several that they wanted to happen differently, and they felt the need to tell me that.

Do you write smut? looooooo, no, my ace ass would probably spontaneously combust.

Craziest crossover: i don't suppose i've ever written an actual crossover, but today i put dracula-the-historical-figure into the vampire diaries universe, so ....

Have you ever had a fic stolen? ... maybe? okay, strap yourselves: a few years ago someone asked if they could translate a fic of mine into spanish and post it on wattpad, and i said yes. (THIS is one of the reasons why i don't allow translations anywhere but ao3 anymore). they did, and they sent me the link. i linked the translation to my fic, the usual. then, a lot later, i actually went to check their post, and i realised that i wasn't credited though the person said they would. yaaaaay.

Have you ever had a fic translated? well, other than the fiasco up there, the incredible @winterandmistletoe, who made the edit that graces the beginning of make them bow., has two chapters of the russian translation of that fic up on ao3. there's also been an offer to translate The Manifesto of a Last Love into russian, but that one hasn't been posted yet.

Have you ever co-written a fic before? i have not! and honestly, i don't think i'd be very good at it. i'm a bit of a tyrant, so in an effort NOT to be perceived as such i'd probably be super lenient of whatever the other people came up with even if i didn't necessarily like it. i'm pretty particular in my tastes, and one of the things i love about writing fic is that i have nobody but myself to answer to.

All time favorite ship? ehhhhh, nooo, i can't choose between my children!

What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will? considering that tvd has had me in its claws for two years now, it feels unlikely i'll ever go back to my wips in other fandoms. you never know of course, but it feels that way. i mean. those unfinished wips don't exactly haunt me, but sometimes i remember them and feel awful about it, lmao.

What are your writing strengths? i'm told i do dialogue and humour well!

What are your writing weaknesses? ughhhhh probably action? it's so hard. oh! and my tendency to describe how a character's eyes look in every other sentence.

Thoughts on dialogue in another language? SO fun fact that dracula fic that i posted today? the one where half the dialogue is in french? i had originally written it all IN FRENCH, and then decided to take mercy on my readers and just put the english translation into italics. yeah. anyway, rule of thumb, ig: if the pov character understands what's being said, then english in italics (or if it's just a sentence or two the spoken language with a footnote). if they can hear individual words, then the language that's being spoken, without translation. if they hear only gibberish--maybe they're super unfamiliar with the language, maybe it's being spoken very fast or with an accent--then just 'character x says something in z'.

First fandom you wrote in? marvel, for my own peace of mind. star wars is the first one i actually posted for.

Favorite fic you've written? again, you can't ask me to pick between my children.

2023 Fic Wrap Up Meme

I was tagged by @nicolasadrabbles - thank you! - and I wasn't even going to do this but then I got all bored so. yeah let's go

Words Published: See this is a nightmare to count because I have in-progress fics that had some chapters posted before 2022, but ha! I've already done this math for another fic writer meme.

250,791 words in 2022. And not that anyone asked, but 233,908 words of that is just Shakarian.

Favourite opening line from a fic in 2022:

Perfect.

It’s not a word Garrus Vakarian would have associated with a person, least of all consciously. Perfect is how he would describe an immaculately maintained mainframe, or what he would scream out after a particularly well-aimed shot. It was a word he only ever said off-handedly, as an exclamation. It could be applied to a worsening situation, if he put enough sarcasm into his words. But never in his life had Garrus thought the word perfect could be used to describe another living being.

Favourite ending line from a fic in 2022:

They don't say it. Maybe it doesn't need to be said, maybe they don't know how to say it aloud, but they both know it. The soft, unspoken I love you lingers in the air between them, in that one spot where their breaths meet.

They don't say it. Maybe they don't need to, maybe they know it, maybe saying it would make it real. Real things can be destroyed so easily... Maybe it's better that it stays unspoken.

Maybe, for now, that's enough.

Fic I'm most proud of from 2022: I really don't know. I think my favourite from this year is Beautifully Struggle Every Day, but on the other hand Forever is the first time I've tried writing a long one-shot in almost 10 years after a particularly traumatic experience that befell me once (yes, I have a Tragic Backstory Connected To Long One Shots lol) and I'm proud of myself for finishing it

Longest fic in 2022: Okay so Behind Closed Doors is kind of cheating because I started it in early 2021, but I don't know how else to count this so yeah. Behind Closed Doors (95,098 words).

New Things I Tried in 2022: I've been writing some smut this year. Haven't really posted it yet but I have a bunch written. I've also been leaning more towards angst than fluff lately and I think that's more of my territory. Finding myself.

Goals for 2023: don't fucking kill myself

48. What’s the last fic you read? Do you recommend it?

Last fic I read was The Knight of Cups by @softest-punk. Highly recommend it! 🍐

30. Have you ever written something that was out of your comfort zone? If so, what was it, and how did it affect your approach to writing fic thereafter?

Oh boy, not that I can remember, no! I'm afraid my fic writing is entirely for my own entertainment and all technical growth achieved is despite my efforts and not because of them lol

On a serious note, maybe Dream's anxiety attacks and dissociative bouts in May Dream, because I'm drawing from personal experience and it can sometimes be difficult to remember those experiences to write about them, but it is also terapheutic, somehow? I've also had to write plenty of things I wasn't interested in or that I personally did not enjoy in college and even at work, so I don't plan on doing much of that in my fics.

16. What’s an AU you would love to read (or have read and loved)?

I'm a sucker for a highschool AU, but most specifically: I would love to read a Dreamling Heartstopper AU. Heartstopper is probably my favourite piece of media I've had the pleasure of finding this year (sorry Sandman!!) and I'm dying to read book 5, so I'd really like to see that :)

I think my favourite AU that I have read is, of course, the critically acclaimed (the critic is me) The Uses of Adversity by Monstrous Regiment on AO3. It was Goncharov before Gonch could ever Charov or something. In case you haven't had the pleasure of reading it, here's the author's summary:

What led Hob Gadling — at the time known as Robert Stranger, because he’d been in a permanent state of pettiness from 1889 to about 1904 and now he was stuck with it — to the dank, cold, and dark basement of the Burgess house on March of 1957 was not so much coincidence or fate as it was curiosity. Yeah. Cats isn’t the only thing it kills. Alright, wait. Back up. Let’s start from the beginning. It was 1957 and Hob Gadling was, by no action or choice of his own, sort of — it’s a bit embarrassing — a criminal master. Not mastermind! He hadn’t planned any of it. Honestly.

11.21.2022

ok SO nano uh. continues. occasionally. i definitely got distracted by goncharov!posting earlier today and it was genuinely weird mentally to sit down and be coming up with meta that had like, an actual fucking canon associated with it lol.

but!!!! today i tried writing on my phone (by which i mean. i took a nap after work, woke up thinking about this fic, and bashed out my wordcount for the day) and it went well! i think this is my favorite and most hm... grounded description of a character having a panic attack that i have ever written. i am VERY pleased with it. i am giving haiji SO MUCH trauma i simply. pour it on him gently and lovingly! sorry man.

but oh god! it's almost done! i've decided that actually for my brain i would rather hit the wordcount all in new draft material (limiting by "stage" of writing) rather than limiting by how much of the fic i touch on (and moving to revising some previous draft material that goes in this first arc). so today's bit is from post-aotake return, post-party, so a few scenes past where i think the first arc "ends" (or like, idk, where maybe some of the things opened in the first arc are resolved). anyway i am simply keeping in mind good advice i got from dorian which boils down to: well if you simply gave it some time and then reread it, you WOULD have the reader experience! astutely put and yeah i have already forgotten what i wrote earlier this month so, very effective as a reminder for me

but today i feel FINE and even OPTIMISTIC and HOPEFUL about the writing i did! this is WILD. i will say i am once again writing this post a few hours after the writing actually happened and that sure does seem to make a big difference to how i mentally perceive what i did

wow i love to observe patterns.
