The legend must be true - one of four hundred rabbit spirits appeared in the ice cube that came to my table the other night as I began sipping mezcal. Around the third shot he spoke to me - can’t say I understood what he was saying - he had a hard guttural voice - but it sounded like a warning. By the fourth shot I realized he was describing the sex life of Mayahuel, the goddess of Agave and fertility, who had fallen in love with a mortal and given birth at the end of a cold winter to "an infinite number" of rabbits, he was one of the many hundreds. By the fifth shot he was a she and seemed in a better mood even though he/she was melting away.
