They left me no choice.
The animation industry is an absolute trash fire right now, and TBH... I don't think it's going to recover. Not in a form I recognize, anyway.
I could go on all day about the self-hating monster that is the Animation Business, but I've said it all before. Right now, none of the major studios are making much of anything, and almost all of what they are making is "library content". I'm currently doing storyboard revisions alongside a number of other former producers and directors, and I'm lucky to have the work. Once all of the mismanagement and the mergers get sorted, though, there should be plenty of room for more mismanagement and mergers. And the A.I. Don't forget the A.I.
It seems that I either give myself over fully to the souring corporate teat in the hopes that I can pretend that I still live in a world where "the grind" matters. Or I take a risk and make one big push to do... something.
First up:
Billy & Mandy vs. The Entertainment Industry:
This is my interview/reality/documentary show on the making of The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy from stem to stern. I'll be talking to as many people as I can who worked on the show about all sorts of different parts of the process. We'll definitely get to voice actors, but the first segment is probably going to be about Billy & Mandy's pre-history and the Big Pick Weekend.
The Upward Expedition:
This is my pick for my indie show. I have a bible. I have a decade of ideas. Time to sit down and tell a story. I want to get some screen sharing going at some point. I'll definitely share artwork as well as the trials and tribulations of getting from There to Back Again.
I'd love to get a Discord server going and provide a place where people can talk about the stuff I'm making (and the entertainment industry in general). I still have enough Billy & Mandy swag left that I'm sure I'll factor that stuff in as well.
In the immediate future, the funding goes to securing a space to do the interviews and probably to banking money for voice actors. I'm still deciding on my update schedule, but it should start in earnest next week.
I'm excited. Pretty scared... but also excited.
More updates to come. Definitely let me know if there's anything specific you'd like to see on the Patreon!
As always, thanks for sticking around!

Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy Theory: Grim is Baron Samedi
Tumblr media
This theory was originally posted on Reddit in 2019 by a now deleted user, and I only read it a few months ago but I've been obsessed with it ever since.
Essentially, it goes something like this: in the show, Grim has a Jamaican accent. Something that was improved by his voice actor and became a staple of the show. But the deleted user proposed this is just one sign of several that point to Grim being a Caribbean death spirit, maybe even Baron Samedi himself. See his points, and some of my own, under the cut:
The keypoints are:
Grim is mischievous and can be quite the trickster, depending on the episode.
Grim has a Caribbean accent.
Grim loves sweets and other simple comforts that mortals enjoy.
Grim would naturally identify himself as "The Grim Reaper" because that's what two American children would understand, and likely the name "Samedi" wouldn't register with them.
Note that these are his points, not mine. I have a very limited understanding of Vodou, Voodoo, Hoodoo, Juju or you. People who actually know the culture may be able to reinforce these points or debunk them.
Some additional points I would add myself:
Baron Samedi is something of a "Grim Reaper" himself, said to guide souls to the underworld when they die.
Samedi is associated with magic. Grim's magical abilities and trinkets are regularly used in the show.
Samedi is characterized as rude, boisterous and crude. Traits that Grim shows in certain episodes.
Samedi is said to bargain in exchange for his services. Grim's first episode is all about bargaining with Billy and Mandy for the life of Billy's hamster.
Samedi is said to be into mortal women. Grim has had a few flings throughout the show.
This is the clicker for me: the first time Grim meets the pair, he challenges to a game of limbo:
Tumblr media
This is a pun. But Limbo comes from the Jamacian word Limba, which means "to bend." Limbo competitions happen prominently in the Caribbean islands. Note also that the limbo board is up of two totem poles with very Tiki-like skulls.
Again, I could have gotten a ton of things wrong, and if I did I hope someone will correct me. But the way it looks now, this theory seems pretty solid. I think you could make a good argument that Grim is meant to be, at least partially, based on Samedi.

I needed to find the “how to draw eyes” stuff for a B&M thing, but I mailed out the originals in 2020. It turns out CN didn’t keep any designs or design reference from anything pre-Adventure Time in the Great Purge and I thought I was going to have to redraw everything. Thanks to Warburtonlabs circa 2014, I don’t need to!
I always found that artists who didn’t directly work on the show had a lot of trouble with Billy’s and Grim’s eyes. It took me a while to figure out that they look really weird if you don’t leave space for their technically nonexistant eye-whites.

Today is @maxwellatoms' 50th birthday, so I decided to put apart my mental issues aside to do something for that, just like I did for the 40th (see here). This time I decided to make something based on that cancelled project he worked for during the 2010's: "Dead Meat".
Sorry for not being active around here, but since I deal with some mental issues, I don't really like Tumblr so much (I find it very complicated), and no one actually cares, I'm not here so much.
Happy birthday Max!
