Maxfield Parrish’s lush coloristic effects with extraordinary detail and academic perfection were first broadly recognized by the American public in the 1920’s and they rewarded him with an unrivaled national popularity. 

Parrish was introduced to the works of the Old Masters and Pre-Raphaelites at a young age during extended stays in Europe, whose techniques, subjects and sentiment he would incorporate into his art. Parrish began experimenting with landscapes in the 1890s, painting and sketching around Cape Ann, Massachusetts, and introducing landscape elements into his magazine and book illustrations.

‘Hilltop’ is a masterful depiction of this relationship between light and shadow, which shows an idyllic environment inspired by the picturesque area surrounding Parrish’s home near the Connecticut River between Vermont and New Hampshire. 

His models recline in classical poses, rays of light puncturing the verdant leaves of the oak before landing across them. They are luminous in the golden light. Paired with the artist's meticulously layered, Old Master-inspired glazing technique that enhances the colours, the scene jumps from the picture plane — transforming the American landscape into an idealised paradise. 

Nothing is left hidden, yet everything appears as if in a dream. Parrish chooses a perspective that does not shroud our gaze, nor filter our vision. 

His work influenced that of other notable artists: Vasarely, with images that bordered on Op Art; Andy Warhol, who collected his work, with repetitive, reproducible Pop Art prototypes; and the great American illustrator, Norman Rockwell, who said that Parrish was his idol. The Realist, Photorealist and Superrealist movements owe their directions to his legacy. He was revered, but nearly forgotten, until his rediscovery when he was in his 90’s in 1964.

currently consuming: uhhh cough syrup because though I'm COVID negative now I still have kind of a nasty cough?

currently craving: this sick simple dinner I make where I cook like an italian seasoned chicken breast in a pan and then add in cherry tomatoes with olive oil and garlic and cook until they burst, then add some honey-infused goat cheese

Landscape. Parrish brought together a harmonious group of elements: a nude figure with panpipes who gazes longingly at a castle perched on a craggy cliff across a lake. Parrish’s skillful lines and details gave his work a photographic quality and made him an incredibly popular painter and illustrator. But color was his secret weapon. He achieved his trademark luminous color, seen here especially in the lake and trees, by building up layers of colored glazes on the surface of the painting. It is said that at the height of his career, one in four American homes had a Parrish—usually a print, illustrated book, or magazine cover. Size: 70 1/2 x 129 1/8 in.
