Sophie Koner

Sophie Koner, née Schäffer (13 July 1855, London - 1 June 1929, Berlin) was a German portrait painter.

Her first painting lessons were in Paris, with Carolus-Duran. Back in Berlin, she took lessons from Max Koner, who was very popular in high society as a portrait painter. She eventually became his private student. They were married in 1886.

They painted several portraits of each other. Encouraged by Max, she exhibited one of him at the Academy of Arts in 1888. Between 1893 and 1920, she participated in numerous exhibitions there. In 1896, she was awarded a gold medal at the Große Berliner Kunstausstellung.

By the 1890s, Max was receiving so many commissions for portraits that she became discreetly employed in finishing them; adding some of the clothing and backgrounds. Following his sudden death at the age of forty-six, she began to specialize in portraits of children, to express her own personal talents. She was adept at entertaining small children while they were posing, so that even large families could be portrayed with little fuss. Her work also includes a handful of landscapes.

She died at the age of seventy-three, and was interred next to Max at the Friedhöfe vor dem Halleschen Tor [de] in the Kreuzberg district. Neither grave has been preserved.

On the marble terrace of a luxurious villa overlooking the Bay of Naples, Marciana shows a friend her ring, a symbol of Aisma's love for her. The latter is depicted in the portrait hanging behind her, inspired by the Fayum mummy portraits of ancient Egypt. At the top right of the composition, we can recognize the Boy with Thorn statue. His surprise at its beauty and the difference of its coastline compared with that of Valencia are evident in a telegram he sent to his wife on his arrival and in a subsequent letter: "Sublime Jávea, immense, the best I know for painting ... I shall be here a few days. If you were here, two months." And: "This, Xabia, has all that I could wish for and more, and if you could see what I have in front of my cottage, you’d be lost for words to praise it; I fall silent from the emotion that still grips me; imagine, my house is on Monte Carlo itself; this is all a mad dream, just like living on the sea, aboard a great ship. You made such a mistake in not coming!! You'd be so happy... You'd enjoy yourself so much! [...] this is the place I've always dreamt about, Sea and Mountains, but what a sea!" He returned there to paint in 1898, 1900 and 1905. This beautiful picture, Rocks at Jávea. The White Boat, comes from the last year of painting in Jávea. Recently, the first-year BA History of Art and Museum Studies students at LJMU spent an afternoon at the Liverpool World Museum. This was to visit the #africa collection for our Global Art History module. The museum has a very rich collection of African artefacts, and a large percentage of the objects were donated by African collectors or patrons. We considered the interesting curatorial layout of the displays, and discussed several objects in more depth. At the end of our visit, we also called in to the innovative immersive exhibition which highlights objects from the #Chinese collection.
