Hey Mike! Huge fan of your work, and if I can gush for a second, that one-shot in Hill House ep. 6, HOLY FUCKING SHIT. I was practically jumping out of my seat when I first watched. Hill House may be my favorite piece of horror media. Well done, sir.
To my question, I'm curious if you've seen the film Possum directed by Mathew Holness. If so, I'd be very curious about your thoughts! You can cut the atmosphere in that movie with a knife, and how shots linger on that damned puppet, shivers. Big shoutout to the prop team on that one. The first horror film to give me nightmares in ages.
Cheers!
I absolutely loved Possum. I was so impressed with it that I started to research who made it, and was pleasantly shocked to discover it was Matthew Holness, as I was also a huge fan of Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. I was amazed that those two things could come out of the same brain.
I praised Possum as loudly as I could on Twitter, which led to Matthew responding. We started writing back and forth, and then met on a zoom, and I offered him a role in The Haunting of Bly Manor. He played Miles and Flora's doomed father, the brother of Henry Thomas' character. His performance is absolutely excellent.

I'd love to find a way to support him as a director, as well, and over the years we've tried to find a project that Intrepid can produce for him. Matthew is brilliant, and Possum is exceptional.

Scene redraw of the film Possum (2018).
I love a good mix of psychological horror and body horror, the film hits it right. Absolutely adored Joseph Avery’s concept art and illustrations of the film’s poem.

And I quote... "Parts of Madeleine have been found under a car park in Milan" (mystery somewhat solved...?)
Amazing ep of Off Menu as always, worth listening to even if you aren't a Garth Marenghi fan but as one, it's great. Definitely need to read his books.

Hey Mike, i have a question about Bly Manor. I was very surprised to see Matthew Holness as the kids' father. Had his casting anything to do with his work as Garth Marenghi?
Oh, absolutely. I'm a massive DARK PLACE fan. It's one of the funniest shows I've ever seen.
Tumblr media
In this case, I had just seen Matt's movie POSSUM, which is amazing. It is so dark and psychological, not at all what you'd expect from Garth Marenghi. It was one of the bleakest, most insidious horror films I'd seen in a long time.
Tumblr media
I reached out to him on social media just to say how much I admired the movie and we started corresponding. I was so fascinated that the same man behind Garth could also make something so poetic and haunting. There's really nothing he can't do, his sensibilities truly run the gamut.
When we began casting for Dominic Wingrave, he was just in my mind and I couldn't shake the idea that it might be a fascinating fit. I asked if he'd be interested and he said yes. I LOVE his performance on the show. He's very, very good in it. He plays the character as a good man whose broken heart gives way to simmering rage. I absolutely adore his scene with Alex Essoe where he confronts her about the affair he's just realized has been happening. He takes it in directions I never expected and proves his prowess as a fine dramatic actor.

I loved working with Matt. We've stayed in touch over the years, and I really hope to work with him again. He's a terrific actor, a wonderful writer and a profoundly talented filmmaker. I very much hope to collaborate with him on something again soon.

‘Can you spy him deep within? Little Possum, black as sin. Bag is open, growing wider. What's inside it, man or spider? Little boy, don't lose your way. Possum wants to come and play.’
