I like an element of chaos in music. That feeling is the best thing ever, as long as you don’t have too much of it.
- Jeff Beck
Considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time, and often called a guitarist’s guitarist, Beck influenced generations with his innovative sounds melding blues, jazz, and rock. He has cited major influences such as Les Paul, Ravi Shankar, Chet Atkins, Django Reinhardt, and Steve Cropper.
Beck won eight Grammy Awards and ranked fifth on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists. He was inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: as a member of the Yardbirds in 1992 and as a soloist in 2009.
Beck joined the Yardbirds in 1965 when he replaced Eric Clapton and appeared on several Yardbirds’ albums, leaving the group in 1966. In 1967, he formed the first iteration of the Jeff Beck Group which included vocalist Rod Stewart and guitarist-bassist Ronnie Wood.
In 1973 he formed the supergroup Beck, Bogert & Appice with former Vanilla Fudge members Carmine Appice and Tim Bogert. With 1975’s Blow by Blow, he went on to a solo career. That album was produced by Beatles collaborator George Martin and achieved platinum status. 1976’s Wired and his 2008’s Performing This Week… Live at Ronnie Scott’s also went platinum, with seven of his albums reaching gold status.
Beck was highly in demand as a collaborator, working with Buddy Guy, Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, and more. His most recent album was 2022’s 18, a collaborative project with actor-musician Johnny Depp. It features two original tracks and covers of songs by The Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye, The Velvet Underground, The Everly Brothers, The Miracles, Killing Joke and Janis Ian.
RIP Jeff Beck (1944-2023)

All throughout June, Black Music Month is being recognized nationally.
In honor of the month, here are five Black musicians who are considered pioneers of their genres.
Robert Johnson: Considered the “King of the Delta Blues,” Robert Johnson is considered one of the originators of the genre that went on to serve as the basis for country, rock, pop and more. Known posthumously as one of the greatest blues performers of all time, Johnson’s recordings such as “Sweet Home Chicago,” “Love in Vain” and “I Believe I’ll Dust My Broom” have been covered by musicians such as Elmore James, The Rolling Stones, Muddy Waters and more.
Although Johnson’s recordings are limited to just 29 songs taped from 1936 to 1937, his staple guitar sound combining lower rhythmic elements and higher melodic licks alongside slide guitar helped pioneer the Delta blues sound.
Juan Atkins: As a part of the “Belleville Three,” Atkins is recognized for his role in developing Detroit techno. Known for helping coin the term “techno” as a way to describe his music, Atkins first formed Cybotron alongside Richard “3070” Davis in 1980.
Influenced by Afrofuturism-inspired funk, German synthesizer musicians such as Kraftwerk and Italian disco, Cybotron’s sound combining synth and a drum machine with beats similar to the New York sound helped provide the foundation for Detroit techno. Also inspired by the Chicago house scene, Atkins has had a career spanning over 40 years as part of groups such as Model 500.
Sister Rosetta Tharpe: As the “Godmother of Rock’N’Roll,” Sister Rosetta Tharpe pioneered the genre and helped influence musicians such as Little Richard, Odetta, Mavis Staples, Tina Turner and Bob Dylan, amongst others.
In her teens, Tharpe had already played with legendary musicians such as Duke Ellington in New York City before touring with gospel legends the Dixie Hummingbirds. Also known as the first gospel singer known nationally and the first gospel artist to record with a company, Tharpe pioneered rock’n’roll as well with the help of her Les Paul Custom. With her electric guitar, she helped create its custom sound through techniques such as her hammer-clawed guitar plucking and fast-paced playing, helping bring the swing sound and traditional melodic elements to rock’n’roll.
DJ Kool Herc: As the “Father of Hip Hop,” DJ Kool Herc’s 1973 block party is known as the place of the birth of hip cop culture. With his innovative“Merry-Go-Round” technique using two turntables and a mixer to create breakbeats, Herc laid the foundation for what would develop as the hip-hop genre. The musician also helped bring the toasting technique, which originated from Jamaica, to his sound, debuting his use of the technique at the famed 1973 party. From toasting, eventually, emceeing and rap would develop.
Sam Cooke: As a soul icon, Sam Cooke’s contributions to the genre influenced a variety of artists such as Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin and more. Considered the “father” of the genre and the “King of Soul,” Cooke’s career began with his work as part of the Soul Stirrers. With the group, Cooke, as lead singer, helped bring gospel music to the younger crowds. Eventually, Cooke shifted to the pop music sphere and, from 1957 to 1964, had 30 top 40 hits on the Billboard charts, including “You Send Me” and “Cupid.” Cooke also took part in the civil rights movement, recording “A Change is Gonna Come” as the anthem of the movement. The song was preserved by the Library of Congress in 2007 for its impact.

We are 100 albums down into the Rolling Stone 500 greatest albums list. I thought I might offer some thoughts so far since, quite obviously, I disagree to some extent with this stupid idiot list. The most important thing to note is that making an objective greatest albums list is futile. What criteria determine that they are the greatest? Most popular? Most influential? Most artistically valid? There are simply no criteria that are subject to the baleful whims of subjectivity. Once the subjective is embraced then making this list is easy, just put anything you like on it. But that clearly isn't what Rolling Stone wants. If it was then they would not have revised it twice. No they want to be as inclusive and diverse as possible. They want some sort of objectivity, but they are limited by their perception. The qualia of any given rolling stone editor is one in which the only mark of significance is popularity in the west, the only influence that matter is influence over white western artists. If they were to be truly honest with themselves the list would just be Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band repeated 500 times. But there is no room for honesty in the wretched hearts of music critics.
The thing that is most obvious is that, although they do mix in a few women and Latino artists, the only marker for diversity they understand is blackness. The overwhelming prominence of Motown and Stax artists on the list is so obviously the result of them simply not knowing that many black artists from outside their comfort zone. So they double dip again and again, choosing albums like Al Green's Greatest Hits and Marvin Gaye's Here My Dear. They could of course be choosing some Asian artists, J-Pop and K-pop have been very popular and influential and City Pop is even surfacing as a popular hipster genre in the west. Why ignore these? It's because they don't see any music that didn't hit the UK or US as being culturally relevant.
There is another marker for diversity though. One that I think is almost more offensive to have ignored if only because this is a music publication talking about music. Genre. Rock, prog, punk, funk, disco, pop, R&B, Hip-hop, all represented here. But there has only been one metal album and literally zero electronic music. No house, techno, drum and bass, jungle, juke, dubstep, riddim, trance, there are so many subsets of electronic music that should be represented here. Show me Jeff Mills, Juan Atkins, Carl Craig. Show me Aphex Twin, Autechre, Plaid. Orbital, The Field, Shpongle, Laurel Halo, Alec Empire! For the love of God show me anything! But what would old men who suckle upon the cock of John Lennon know of electronic music. Electronic music is fundamentally black, and it only really goes on to heavily influence other black music. The reality of all that Motown on this list is that it influences white people and is therefore valid. Keep that in mind and the list becomes easier to understand. If you see anything other than a cisgender white male artist on here then you can safely assume they must have been influencial to some other cis white guy.

NOTES: Full HD stageshot filmed from the front orchestra! This is fairly better than the other stageshot, including less heads, more facial features, but one major head that's sometimes filmed around whenever the master isn't wandering downward. Great video quality overall and it includes full Act One and Act Two starting at Beetlejuice's entrance after Girl Scout through Curtain Call!

Beetlejuice - Broadway - March, 2019 (Preview) (StarCuffedJeans's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Alex Brightman (Beetlejuice), Sophia Anne Caruso (Lydia Deetz), Kerry Butler (Barbara Maitland), Rob McClure (Adam Maitland), Adam Dannheisser (Charles Deetz), Leslie Kritzer (Delia Deetz/Miss Argentina), Kelvin Moon Loh (Otho), Danny Rutigliano (Maxie Dean), Jill Abramovitz (Maxie Dean/Juno)
NOTES: Previews! This is probably my most obstructed bootleg ever. When I could get zooms they’re pretty (and I’m really trying my hardest for both Sophia and Kerry - “Dead Mom” looks GREAT and is really consistent), but I would probably consider this more like highlights with how many heads keep popping up. I don’t love it, but you can keep up with what is happening and see the WILD effects they have going on here...which is good enough for now. Video starts at “Ready, Set, Not Yet” and is complete from there. And honestly this video (and this show) is worth it just for “Dead Mom.”
Beetlejuice - Broadway - November, 2019 (StarCuffedJeans's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Will Blum (u/s Beetlejuice), Sophia Anne Caruso (Lydia Deetz), Kerry Butler (Barbara Maitland), David Josefsberg (Adam Maitland), Adam Dannheisser (Charles Deetz), Kim Sava (u/s Delia Deetz/Miss Argentina), Sean Montgomery (u/s Otho), Danny Rutigliano (Maxie Dean), Jill Abramovitz (Maxie Dean/Juno)
NOTES: A few heads show up briefly and a quick video drop after the first two songs. Covers from opening song to final applause, great shot.

NOTES: YouTube rip of various clips of Dana Steingold in the role of Lydia. Highlights include Invisible, Dead Mom, Home, and curtain call.

NOTES: Full HD stageshot of this incredible show! Filmed from the rear orchestra without zooms, with a lot of head obstructions.
Beetlejuice - Broadway - September, 2019 (2) (StarCuffedJeans's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Alex Brightman (Beetlejuice), Presley Ryan (u/s Lydia Deetz), Kerry Butler (Barbara Maitland), David Josefsberg (Adam Maitland), Adam Dannheisser (Charles Deetz), Leslie Kritzer (Delia Deetz/Miss Argentina), Danny Rutigliano (Maxie Dean), Jill Abramovitz (Maxie Dean/Juno), Dana Steingold (Girl Scout)
NOTES: Beautiful HD capture of the incredible Presley Ryan as Lydia and David’s first week as Adam! Filmed from the left orchestra without obstructions with a mix of wides, mediums, and closeups. This is hands down the best video of the show to date. Starts about 3 minutes into performance (mid whole being dead thing).

NOTES: Most the first hour Act 1 is covered up or shot blind. When there’s something to see, it’s nice. The fidelity is cleaned up from the unfortunate dark ages of when it was shot, but the audio is a touch harsh.

NOTES: Nicely filmed from the balcony with a good balance of close-ups and full stage shots, although a little shaky at times. This is the first (and so far, only) video with Kiril Kulish in the role of Billy. Unfortunately about 15 minutes of the show is missing due to battery issues. What's missing is: Grandma's song "We Go Dancing", the scene between Dad and Tony, the beginning of "Deep Into The Ground", and the scene between Mrs. Wilkinson and Dad discussing Billy's ballet. It appears the filmer was trying to conserve battery power and was trying to focus on Billy's scenes. DVD has been enhanced with main menu and thumbnail images for access to the various songs. A-

They are the same capture it's just the DVD Menu shows the capture date as 3-11-2011 while the poster at the beginning says 3-7-2011 A nice capture of this hilarious original show. A very solid and funny cast. Nikki does a fantastic job acting and vocally. On wide shots there can be heads on the sides, but nothing that really obstructs the action. During Broadway previews, less than a month before the official premiere. So there are differences from the Cast Recording. Very nice video of the show however a bar can be visible in wide shots but it doesn't interfere with anything.

NOTES: A fantastic capture of the second tour cast. This is the first known dvd of the 2NT, and the cast doesn’t disappoint. David and Cody are strong leads with great voices and comedic timing. Pierce is perfect as McKinley. Tallia also does a great job; she has a strong belt and does an endearing rendition of Sal Tlay Ka Siti. This is a very nice capture with no obstruction or blackouts, and only a bit of washout in superwide shots of high-contrast scenes. The video is very steady and the sound is excellent as usual. It’s filmed in 16:9 with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. Includes curtain call.
The Book of Mormon - Sweden - 2017 (Highlights) FORMAT:  MKV (HD) CAST: Linus Wahlgren (Elder Price), Per Andersson (Elder Cunningham)
NOTES: Act 1 and first few minutes of Act 2 (until Spooky Mormon Hell Dream) only. Vertical; filmed from a mobile phone. Camera wanders a lot. Lots of washouts and no zooms but audio is clear quality.

NOTES: Workshop all staged on barebones sets. Very interesting changes from the eventual Broadway version, including a much different “All American Prophet” (a squaredaney number called “The Bible is a Trilogy, Too”) This version is far less polished and focused but incredibly interesting to see for fans of the show.

Breakfast at Tiffany's - Broadway - March 9, 2013 (Lanelle's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Cory Michael Smith (Fred), Emilia Clarke (Holly)
NOTES: Shot in between a great deal of heads. Be warned, this production contains nudity during a bathtub scene. The production strays away much from the film that made it so popular.

20/04 Monday 3. Thief
Things get violent and spicy in this, so definitely rated M. It’s a serial killer AU. Hope it’s fun! @bend-me-shape-me, @helianthus21, @pray4jensen
“No! Please, you don’t have to do this!”
Castiel rolled his eyes as his latest victim pleaded. Cas leaned against a chest in the storage facility basement he was using, crossing his arms, even putting one ankle over the other. He licked his bottom lip.
“You done yet?” Castiel asked, as the man sat there, tied to the chair, blubbering.
His name was Marvin Atkins. He was thirty-seven, he had a membership at a gym that he used quite frequently, his favorite topping on pizza was broccoli, and he worked for a business firm. He also had yet another handy fact about him that had made Castiel so interested in him in the first place — he was six foot three, and had green eyes. Men like that were hard to come by. He only saw a man more beautiful than that every once in awhile, when they’d meet up to talk about their kills.
He felt his dress pants start growing tight as he thought of Dean Winchester.
They weren’t exactly boyfriends, but they weren’t enemies. Dean’s type was guys who fit Castiel’s profile; Castiel’s, Dean’s. It had only been a matter of time before they’d find each other. At this point Cas couldn’t even remember who had tried to kill who first. But now they were used to the whole bondage and roughing each other up thing. They just used it to get pleasure out of each other.
But even then, Castiel was sure he had a soft spot for Dean Winchester somewhere inside him. He’d never admit it, but if he didn’t, why would he even be doing what he was now?
Castiel shook his head, tisk-ing. “Marvin, Marvin, Marvin… This isn’t about you,” Castiel said. He got off the chest, and came forward. Already with one hand in his pocket, he was fingering the rubber ball and duct tape that he had. “This is about something so much bigger.”
Marvin’s wild eyes grew even more panicked, and white was practically all Castiel could see. “What? Like the mafia?”
Castiel tilted his head. “Hmm… Close. Valentine’s Day.”
Marvin just stared at him in confusion, seemingly forgetting how panicked he was. That was, until Castiel approached, getting in his personal space. His victim was shaking, sweating. Tears built up in his eyes.
Castiel fought with him to get the rubber ball in his mouth, clamped around his teeth, and then he kept it there with duct tape going around his head. A make-shift ball gag. Cas had learned that particular trick from the last time Dean had taken him captive.
Cas took out a silver-colored blade, the metal seeming to reflect back pure light from the old swinging bulb up above and the spotlight he’d placed on his victim.
Castiel rubbed the sharp edge against the man’s cheeks, slicing, spilling blood.
His victim cried, struggling.
A powerful rush of sensation filled his gut. It was like getting punched, while getting infused with adrenaline and pleasure all at once. Castiel’s cock twitched in his pants.
“Here’s how this is going to go,” he explained. “I’m going to carve you up, nice and pretty, and then…” He dragged the blade down to Marvin’s chest, imagining the fluttering heart in his breast. “Then, I’m going to take this. Your heart. I know someone who’d want it.”
Castiel started cutting, and he reveled in Marvin’s muffled screams.
oOoOo
Castiel didn’t know where Dean lived, but he knew where he was staying for now. He was in a motel on the outskirts of town, and the motel provided hot tubs, so he could imagine Dean was living it up. They were also a good place to keep bodies if you didn’t want to make too much of a mess.
When Castiel knocked on the door he knew was his, it opened just a crack. He could see one of Dean’s beautiful eyes peer out. Blood dripped behind Castiel’s back from what he held in his hand. He should probably keep it out of the light, but no one was around anyway. Besides, the blood on his clothes would be what they noticed first, not that he was holding something behind his back.
“Talk quickly,” Dean snarled out, the tense way his lips shaped the words showing those lovely white teeth of his. Cas had a twinge of sensation in between his legs, imagining those teeth against his skin. He worked his own tongue around his mouth, realizing he wanted to bite Dean. “I have a gun to the door,” Dean went on. “Right next to your head. Either we can make this ugly, or really ugly.”
“Dean, I’m just here to say Happy Valentine’s Day.”
Dean frowned, a picture of total confusion.
“What?”
Castiel pressed against the door to come in, and then tossed Dean what he’d been holding. It slipped from Dean’s hand, but he caught it again before it hit the floor. This made him have to drop his gun though, and when he came back up, Castiel was holding it under his chin.
Dean held the bleeding heart up, studying it, even with metal glinting against his flesh.
“Valentine’s Day, huh, Castiel?” Dean asked. “Who’d you get this from?”
“I stole it,” Cas responded, drawing in close, breathing heavy now that he was near Dean.
“I didn’t know you were a thief.”
Castiel lowered the gun, but brought it down, pressing it against Dean’s pelvis. He rutted against it.
“Neither did I. But I can assure you, the man who had it, won’t be needing it anymore.”
Dean cracked a smile, and then pulled Castiel in close, even as the barrel of the gun now threatened to go into his jeans.
“Well, I’m all yours. Who’s turn is it to play victim this time?”
Castiel kissed Dean, bit his bottom lip, and pulled, making sure it bled. He groaned as he tasted it.
“I do believe it’s yours,” Castiel told him.
“Well, fuck me.”

2020 NFL Trade Deadline Tracker: Kwon Alexander sent to Saints, Desmond King goes to Titans
The 2020 NFL trade deadline (Tuesday, Nov. 3) is almost here. The league has already seen a few trade offers accepted, but more are on the horizon. CBS Sports is tracking all of the news and rumors and providing a one-stop shop for readers. The most recent updates are at the top.
Chargers send DB Desmond King to Titans
Los Angeles is sending Pro Bowl defensive back/kick returner Desmond King to the Titans in exchange for a sixth-round pick, according to NFL Media and ESPN. King, who is in the final year of his deal, has recorded 24 tackles and one sack in six games this season.
Saints acquire former Pro Bowler Kwon Alexander from 49ers
The New Orleans Saints are sending a conditional fifth-round pick and linebacker Kiko Alonso to San Francisco in exchange for Alexander, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The two teams play each other in Week 10. The Saints are attempting to win at all costs, while 49ers general manager John Lynch was eager to get a big contract off the books.
These two teams are still in the hunt for their respective divisions.
CBS Sports insider Jason La Canfora notes that Marvin Jones is the receiver that has been made available by Detroit but questions if Golladay might also be had at the right price.
“Things have been tense between him and the organization for quite some time; he’s been brooding over not getting a new deal, and that came to a head on Saturday when I’m told he was not at the facility when he should have been,” La Canfora wrote.
Golladay, 26, is in the final year of his rookie contract. He has recorded 20 receptions for 338 yards and two touchdowns while missing two games with an injury.
Reserve linebacker Robert Spillane has played well post-injury to Bush but Pittsburgh has seen a past without solid linebacker play and it was not pretty. They bolstered their Super Bowl contending roster in the form of veteran LB Avery Williamson. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday night that the AFC team acquired Williamson and a 2020 seventh-round pick in exchange for a 2020 fifth-round pick. Williamson goes from the NFL‘s lone win-less team to the lone undefeated team; a reversal of fortunes overnight.
Williamson has 59 tackles and one interception this season.
Saints steadfast in claim that Michael Thomas is unavailable
The potential availability of New Orleans wide receiver Michael Thomas is a rumor that has gained steam in recent weeks for whatever reason. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport says that the team has no intention of moving the star wide receiver despite punching a teammate in practice leading up to a Week 5 contest against Chargers.
A trade of Thomas would leave New Orleans with a dead cap hit of $27 million in 2020. The number dips down to $14 million following the 2022 season.
Bengals’ Carlos Dunlap sent to Seattle
The Seahawks acquired disgruntled edge rusher Carlos Dunlap from Cincinnati Wednesday in exchange for offensive lineman B.J. Finney and a 2021 seventh-round draft pick, according to SI.com’s Albert Breer. Dunlap has vocalized his unhappiness by posting the team’s defensive rotations and promoting the sale of his home on Twitter and more. Dunlap has 18 tackles, one sack and two pass deflections this season.
The Bengals may not be done at the deadline. There are a few other veterans that could be on the move. There is more on that story below. ESPN’s Adam Caplan also notes that the Seahawks may not be done acquiring pass rush help.
Ten trades that can aid contenders in a Super Bowl run
CBS Sports’ Patrik Walker mocked up ten trades that could help contenders make a Super Bowl run. Is it possible that the Patriots could be buyers and sellers ahead of the Nov. 3 deadline? Walker has the Patriots moving a big-time player while also adding a brand name wide receiver.
Not every team is a contender though and the deadline could still be interesting for lower-tier teams. CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin explored one trade that each team should make in the coming days.
Everson Griffen dealt to Lions in exchange for pick
It did not take long for Dallas to find a viable suitor for edge rusher Everson Griffen. On Tuesday, it was learned that Detroit was acquiring the former Viking in exchange for a conditional 2021 sixth-round draft pick. He is due to receive roughly half of his $6 million salary from the Lions. League COVID-19 protocols prevent Griffen from playing this weekend so his first action with his new team will come Nov. 8 against … Minnesota.
Miami has turned the keys to the castle over to rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa but that does not mean the AFC East contender is prepared to give up on their season nor recently demoted second string quarterback. Head coach Brian Flores states that the team has no intention of trading Ryan Fitzpatrick.
The veteran led the Dolphins to a 3-3 record and second place within the division.
Shopping list for three NFL teams
The CBS Sports team has been compiling needs for multiple teams across the NFL. Rather than reading a generic list of players available, indulge in a more team-centric approach:
Cleveland Browns Las Vegas Raiders New England Patriots New York Giants Philadelphia Eagles Washington Football Team
Players that could be available at the deadline
CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin constructed a position-by-position list of 75 players that could be on the move ahead of the Nov. 3 trade deadline. Some of the notable names include Saints quarterback Jameis Winston, Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green, Texans edge rusher J.J. Watt and Patriots cornerback Stephon Gilmore. For the full list, check out CBSSports.com.
Cowboys make DE Everson Griffen, DT Dontari Poe available
CBS Sports’ Patrik Walker confirmed that Griffen and Poe have been made available to other teams in a potential trade scenario. Griffen signed a one-year, $6 million deal with Dallas prior to the season and would be owed roughly half. CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan notes that the 32-year-old has played 56.43% of Dallas’ defensive snaps and totaled 20 tackles, six quarterback hits, and 2.5 sacks. CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin laid out five potential destinations for Griffen with Seattle being the most likely.
Poe signed a two-year deal worth $8.5 million, but there is a reasonable out in the contract after this season. It is less likely that he is moved at the deadline.
Ten trades that should happen before the Nov. 3 deadline
CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin proposed ten trades that would be win-win situations for both teams involved. What would A.J. Green look like on the Packers? It may not cost as much as you might think. Read the explanation behind that trade:
“At this point, why shouldn’t Green Bay take a swing, even if it eventually means losing Green in 2021 free agency and hoping for a compensatory pick? Aaron Rodgers has done very well operating with just Davante Adams and/or Allen Lazard, but with the latter hurt and No. 12 clearly positioned to take the Packers on another run, he deserves the gamble,” Benjamin wrote.
Romeo Crennel attempts to assure Texans they won’t be traded
The Texans are off to an unexpected 1-6 start to the season. Bill O’Brien has been fired in favor of veteran coach Romeo Crennel. Crennel, who likely has little authority over personnel decisions as an interim head coach, attempted to reassure his players that they will not be traded.
“So, with this situation the way it is, I think that it might be more on their mind this year than it would be any other year. I’ve talked to them and tried to reassure them that I’m not looking to trade guys, but human nature is human nature.”
CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora believes it is time for a fire sale in Houston. The team has struggled with the likes of edge rusher Whitney Mercilus, J.J. Watt and others. If the team is going to be bad anyway, they might as well re-coup some of the picks flushed down the drain by O’Brien.
Bengals DE Carlos Dunlap attempts to sell house on Twitter
There has been no mincing of words in regard to Dunlap’s frustration. He has posted the team’s edge rush rotations on social media and is now attempting to sell his house on Twitter. The message is clear: trade me. CBS Sports’ Jeff Kerr wrote about the veteran’s frustration upon being demoted.
In addition to Dunlap, defensive tackle Geno Atkins, wide receiver A.J. Green, wide receiver John Ross and cornerback William Jackson could also be on the move. CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin explored potential destinations for each of the disgruntled AFC North talents. The Bills were a staple.
Atlanta has already pressed the reset button on their leadership structure with head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Thomas Dimitroff being shown the door. The mindset will not trickle down to the players, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who notes that the team has no intention of trading Ryan or Jones.
The Falcons have gone 25-30 since that fateful 28-3 collapse against the Patriots in Super Bowl LI.
Patriots searching for receiver help again
New England drafted N’Keal Harry in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft and traded a second round pick for Mohamed Sanu. Neither has been the answer that the team had hoped. The Patriots are still alive within the AFC East but the outlook grows more bleak with each passing week. The team’s upcoming game against Buffalo could determine whether they are buyers or sellers by Nov. 3. As it stands, Bill Belichick is exploring options on the wide receiver trade market, according to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora. Two of the team’s top five receptions leaders are running backs. Draft tight ends Devin Asiasi and Dalton Keene have a combined one reception.
Texans expected to trade at least one receiver, other veterans
CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora has reported that the Texans are a popular team in trade conversations. The organization’s sluggish start and obvious eyes to the future have potential playoff contenders scouring their roster. La Canfora states rival executives believe Houston will trade at least one receiver, Will Fuller, Brandin Cooks and Kenny Stills, by the deadline. They are also gauging the market on edge rusher Whitney Mercilus, who has three years left on a four-year, $54 million deal signed in May of 2015.
Running back Duke Johnson and tight end Darren Fells are other names that have drawn consideration.
Vikings looking to shed cap space, rival GMs aren’t eager
Minnesota has made a series of poor salary cap decisions leading up to the ultimate errors: re-signing Anthony Barr after he attempted to leave for New York and doubling down on Kirk Cousins. Now, they find themselves in a position to discard players because their season has not gone as expected and they are up against the salary cap wall.
The team has already traded edge rusher Yannick Ngakoue but more moves could be on the way. CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora had the following to say about the team’s activity: “Multiple executives who have been in contact with the Vikings believe the team is eager to move several more high-priced veterans who likely do not fit into the team’s long-term plans.”
The names most often mentioned are safety Harrison Smith, left tackle Riley Reiff, safety Anthony Harris, tight end Kyle Rudolph and wide receiver Adam Thielen.
Bengals more engaged in trade talks than the previous year
Defensive tackle Geno Atkins, cornerback William Jackson, wide receiver A.J. Green, wide receiver John Ross and edge rusher Carlos Dunlap have all made it clear that they are open to a change of scenery, according to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora. The Bengals were very unwilling to trade veterans last season — an absolute mistake, says the writer continually beating a dead horse — but La Canfora notes that NFL executives are “detecting a vibe that is not quite as trade-averse” in Cincinnati.
Giants trade Markus Golden to Arizona in exchange for draft pick
On Oct. 23, the Giants agreed to trade outside linebacker Markus Golden to the Cardinals in exchange for a 2021 sixth-round pick. Golden, who actually began his career in Arizona, had just 1.5 sacks in seven games with the Giants this season. It was a priority to bolster the pass rush following the loss of Chandler Jones for the season.
Philadelphia and Julie Ertz’s husband have been at odds over his contract for some time. The matters were only exacerbated by new deals for Travis Kelce and George Kittle this offseason. Ertz was recently placed on injured reserve, which means that he can not be traded. SI’s Albert Breer reported that the team attempted to trade the player before placing him on said IR. Prior to the injury, he had recorded 24 receptions for 178 yards and one touchdown.
Breer added that wide receiver Alshon Jeffery is also on the trade block, but it is difficult to fathom anyone would want to take on that contract in relation to his limited production.
Minnesota trades Yannick Ngakoue to Baltimore for draft picks
Less than two months after acquiring the pass rusher from Jacksonville, Minnesota shipped Yannick Ngakoue to the east coast in exchange for a package of draft picks less than they initially traded to the Jaguars. The Maryland native, who has recorded five sacks this season, is headed home in exchange for a 2021 third-round pick and a conditional 2022 fifth-round pick.
Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta hinted that the Ravens may not be done making moves. The acquisition of Ngakoue is clearly a move to slow down Patrick Mahomes, who is sometimes flustered by heavy pass rush, and the Chiefs offense. CBS Sports’ Patrik Walker graded the trade acknowledging that Baltimore fleeced their trade partner.
New York traded Willis and a 2021 seventh-round pick to the 49ers in exchange for a 2021 sixth-round pick. The capital gain is marginal at best but general manager Joe Douglas is cleaning house in the Big Apple. I explored some of the other Jets players that could find interest in their services at the trade deadline.
New York trades Steve McLendon to Tampa Bay
The Jets sent the defensive tackle and a 2023 seventh-round pick to the Buccaneers in exchange for a 2022 sixth-round pick. Tampa Bay had recently lost Vita Vea to an injury for the season.
It was later revealed that McLendon played for the Jets after finding out about his trade to the Buccaneers. A car was waiting for him after the game and he immediately drove to Tampa.
