Fionna and Cake's early portrayal of Simon and Betty's relationship gave me the icky feelings. "This is disturbingly unethical," I had thought, "and there's no way she isn't bummed about missing out on literally everything she ever wanted to do for his sake." And yet the narrative and context clues seemed to be saying "Nono. Dead dove. These are problematic but we want you to engage with the beauty that is proposed anyway."
I'm glad they addressed that at the end. It would've been an odd blemish if they hadn't, but now it is a clever trick, you see. Very wizened.

i was thinking about fionna and cake’s version of jermaine, and drew her this morning!! i posted her to r/adventuretime and she didn’t do too bad there, so i started writing stuff for fionna and cake world lol more headcanons below the cut :)
i originally posted her under the name “jasmeen” but i think corrine would be better suited for the sibling alliteration with cake :) huge thanks to some of the users in the reddit comments who helped brainstorm some of this!! lemme know what u think lol
fionna was adopted at birth by a (human) couple, cynthia and marlowe. cynthia works in the city’s forensics department and they both own a funeral home/cemetery. they have big hearts, and have a hard time charging folks for caskets and burials. they owned two cats, corrine and cake, and fionna took cake with her when she moved out, leaving corrine at her (now elderly and retired) parents place. if corrine could walk and talk like cake in this world, she’d be running the funeral home and going after people for the money they owe her elderly parents. it’s shitty work and they aren’t hurting for money, but things in this life aren’t free, right? her true passion is sculpture, and eventually she learns to let the debts go and focus on her work.
fionna’s biological parents, milton campbell and mallory mertins, had a nice relationship in the beginning. but when mallory gave birth to fionna, she disappeared from the city with her. having always struggled with her mental health, mallory’s post-partum depression became post-partum psychosis and she left fionna at a safe surrender site in her daze. her psychosis spiraled and she was sent to prison before escaping into homelessness. milton died not long after their disappearance, after serving as a nurse for his entire career and saving thousands of lives. he even had a newly built hospital named after him after his death.
gary prince was on his own at a very early age, leaving the abusive home of his aunt georgia, uncle larry, and cousin chantal. georgia goes on and on about all the wonderful things she was meant to accomplish if she didn’t have to take in gary and his sister, and chantal goes along with it all. larry at least is sympathetic and sends money to them when he can. as a result, most of the money gary makes goes towards taking care of his special needs sister, nadine.
marshall lee was extremely close with his father, elijah, before he died. elijah wanted nothing to do with hana’s money or work, and raised their son in a small home in the forest. marshall grew up knowing how to rough it in the outdoors, before his mother took him away from that life and into a stuffy, proper one. she sold the house he grew up in and he never forgave her.
flora never knew where she came from. her favorite activity is catfishing dudes online. she hates her appearance, and feels like she’ll never truly know who she really is. after the events of the show fionna and cake, she learns all she can about fionna by stalking her online. she adopts fionna’s backstory as her own, and even commits a few instances of identity theft against her. this torments her and she hates doing it, but feels like she has no other choice. her and fionna look strikingly similar, and it has made her actually start to appreciate her own appearance and feel whole for once.
phoenix fleming hates his mother, she’s a big preacher in the local church and raised him as strictly as possible. he was barely allowed to leave the house until he moved out as soon as possible, and discovered his love for raves and DJing. he now devotes all his time to being dj flame, and his mother refuses to let him be. his next door neighbor, miss bundy, is kinder to him than his own mother ever was, and brings him treats every day.

thinking about Finn and Fern and how The Death of Legacy was essential to their story's resolution
Legacy is a repeated theme throughout the series—legacy, destiny, our ability to change and/or uphold those, whether or not it is our responsibility to do so, even when that legacy or destiny directly conflicts with our morality.
Each character confronts (and usually kills) the legacy assigned to them in one way or another throughout the series: Marceline rebels against Abadeer, PB relinquishes her place of power, King of Ooo has his own fall from grace, BMO confronts and kills AMO, NEPTR refuses to succumb to evil, Cinnamon Bun escapes the "dumb clutz" persona he held in the Candy Kingdom, Flame Princess subverts every expectation held for her and shows an immense capacity for kindness and forgiveness when expected to lash out or become evil, Ice King goes from "evil freak" to "irritable weird old man who cares about people a lot" even in spite of the fact that the Crown was imposing aggression onto him, Gunther/Orgalorg throws away another chance at unfathomable intergalactic power for a chance at the love Ice King was always searching for, Betty became a chaos god rather than accepting the fate of Simon's death because of her own summoning ritual, Jake sacrificed his role as an active father to continue raising Finn when he realized who needed him more immediately, and perhaps the biggest example of this is Sweet P, who is the Lich reborn.
And all of this is not even touching Finn or Fern.
Finn and Fern actually share a legacy of a well-known and generally respected hero (though some of that trust was damaged after the episode, "The Tower," when said tower collapsed onto the Candy Kingdom and, "lotsa folks got squished"). They share the legacy of "The last human in all of Ooo," and as "Son of Martin Mertins and Minerva Campbell," and as "Son of Margaret and Joshua," and as "Little brother to Jake the Dog and Jermaine," and as "Father of NEPTR," and as "Flame Princess' ex boyfriend," and as so much more.
but Fern has this additional legacy attached to him, this separate history where his timeline and Finn's diverge. He has the legacy of "The Sacrifice that brought back Prismo"—a sacrifice that he did not consent to making, by the way. He's got the legacy of "Finn Sword," protecting the version of himself who sacrificed him and separated him from his own Jake, who was also sacrificed for Prismo's sake. And then he has the legacy of the Grass Wizard forcefully imposed on him, this legacy of the Grass Sword's curse, of evil.
And then Finn imposes the legacy of "brother" onto him. forces him back into the old shoes of "Finn the Human, Hero of Ooo," when he's still trying to figure out what he even is now. What all of it means. It's like with the Jiggler all over again, where Finn refuses to address the underlying issue of the fact that there is no space for Fern here.
And Finn never realizes, the self-sacrificial guy that he is, that Fern is seeing all of this for the first time, is finally realizing how Jermaine must feel, because when it comes to Finn and Jake and the bond that they share, there's not really any room for anyone else. but Fern is also only a sixteen-year-old boy—why does Finn deserve to be loved and cared for by his big brother, but Fern doesn't anymore? Why is Finn the only one offering him comfort? Oh. Right. Because he feels like Fern is "his responsibility."
So Fern already feels out of place, and he recognizes that, unless Finn is gone, he will never have Jake again. And he decides that, in order to step into "Finn the Human, brother of Jake the Dog," maybe the legacy of "Finn the Human, Hero to All in Need," may have to fall.
And then we have Finn, who embodies kindness and compassion, who refuses to kill Fern, but ends up doing it, anyway. Who, because he couldn't save this version of himself, feels he has lost the legacy, "Protector," has failed to uphold the legacy of, "Brother," has maybe even lost "Hero," in the scramble.

i don’t think enough people truly understand just how tragic the story of the mertin family is. minerva was a happy mother and wife and one day she comes home to find that her husband has taken her kid, neither of them to be seen again. then, already depressed, she succumbs to a deadly virus. after martin defeats the guardian, he is a shell of his former self and feconde detatched from any and all emotional connection, knowing how easily that can be taken away and eventually gives up his life. finn is adopted by a loving family but never truly sees the same parents again and is subconsciously traumatized by water that he was stranded as a baby in for the rest of his life. they are all warped by loss and tragedy.

Well, that was a trip. Turns out that if Marcy goes evil, she can pretty much take the whole world with her. Pretty terrifying.
We had a relatively small cast of alternate characters this episode, but all of them were fascinating, down to the tragic hero that was Martin Mertins. But with the cliffhanger ending, it's hard to say what if any hope there is for the future of Vampire World. Maybe Blackrom Bubbline survives their fall and finds a new way forward. Maybe the world continues to rot away until baby Finn grows up and emerges as the hero they need. Who knows?
Regardless, we probably won't see them again, unless there's a montage of visited worlds at the very end of the series. So the future is open to speculation.
My work schedule is a little screwy for the next few days, so I'll be taking a break from liveblogging until Saturday. Cya then!

C.o.p.s writing be apon ye
The good thing about overstepping when you walk is that you can hear more of conversations that you want to join.
This was of course, a made up sentence thought up by Mel, who had not yet been noticed by the Computer Obsolescence Prevention Society. This was a plus, since the various noise was nice distraction.
Although, as soon as that was established Mel wondered if the noise was normal. As far as it could tell- Curt and Chippy might be overheating. Which was bad for well, everything sentient ever.
"Hi hi hi hi guys. Are you ok? What were you all talking about?"
"SPACE."
Mel's head tilted in a exaggerated manner. "Hm? Like- Like just the concept of space in general? Or any specific part??"
"We Are Brainstorming Our Next Project."
"Your player character is transported to a distant realm of alien technology, where the Zolarian race(descendants of what one could call house cats) need your help to ensure their survival."
"DESTROY COUNT DOGULUS!"
Chippy also chimed in, not that Mel was able to decipher what he was saying. Though this all sounded very melodramatic.
"That Is As Far As We Have Gotten. Any Feedback Is Welcome."
"Well. That does sound like a lot." Mel stared towards Bluster Blaster, who was the only one here who was taller than it. "But, I'm not sure why we need to fight them. Maybe that's just like, like me being a softie but I can't think of reasons for these guys to be dicks to each other."
"It's quite literally a cats vs dogs situation!"
"But that's just in the movies! I've known more cats and dogs coexisting peacefully than not."
"So You Are Suggesting You Save The Zolarians With What?"
"Love from the heart, of course." Mel made sure to say it in a weird tone, because saying it like that would be funny. "No but seriously, maybe it can be a talking game?"
"THE LASERS WOULD LOOK LIKE WORDS!"
"Maybe that would be cool. Even if it was just gibberish stuff!"
There was a rather sudden whirring sound after Mel said that.
"Processing- Huh. T-That Will Suffice For Gameplay."
Mel was tempted to ask Curt what that was about, how he had managed to stutter and if he was feeling ok and to please for the love of whatever's holy tell it if it was asking something they couldn't do. But then Bob started talking, suddenly and a little fast.
"Quick survey: What is a nice, plain, TEMPORARY name to attach to our intrepid protagonist- aka the average player-?"
Mel made noises in order to signal that it was thinking, and to please wait a moment.
"Well- If it helps my legal name is Melvin- if you wanna put that in."
Chippy made a noise of absolute disgust upon hearing those words come out of Mel's mouth.
"What's good about that is there are a ton of variations you can use. Mervin, Malvin, Marvin, Martin... Not Mertin though. That would be too weird for people I think."
"That'll be just fine!" The rushed tone was mostly gone by that point. "Thank you for taking the time to speak with us. Your input is greatly appreciated."

"You Are Looking At 2 Pages And 500 Words That Detail The Backstory For Our New Project."
As per what usually happens, Sam and Max were in the wrong place at the right time. Now having exclusive access to the first draft of whatever this project was. The c.o.p.s were very excited to share what they guessed was top notch writing. The others....
"So? What do you think?"
"I'm starting to think that Mel's constant presence is... affecting your guys output."
"Seriously, what were you ON?" Max grabbed a page at random. " 'The hive of machines CB-843 was powered by began to overheat as Melvin began to individually pick each one of them up.' Erm, how do you say- YUCK!"
"Did they actually write that?" Sam had a death grip on the papers now. He was reading from the beginning, which was actually an ok, if gaudy sci-fi. Then one of the feline aliens introduced 'Melvin' to the AI it was supposed to handle. Now there was all this strange talk of games devolving into the protagonist just complimenting the machine.
"It Is Only A Draft."
"We spent a long time trying to make this as best as we possibly can!"
"How long would that ?"
"Two Weeks, Twenty Two Days And Thirty Three Hours."
Sam let go of the papers. They flopped down onto the table.
"You have got to be kidding me."
Max was shaking his head back and forth slowly.
"I don't know what to think anymore."
"Me neither."
"WE GOT IT'S PERMISSION!"
"Like we care about that!" Max was harsh- he was like that all the time, not that any of them were less upset that they're getting criticized like this.
"Not that it's badly written- It's just..."
"Go on, Sam."
"Wouldn't you want it to be romancing the Zolarians?"
"Where Did You Get That Idea From?" It was like the c.o.p.s were insisting that this was perfectly fine and that there were no implications with them writing about Mel and a computer falling in love. Probably because they were.
"Sam, am I having a anyuerism?"
"Maybe. You sure nothing was meant by having Mel call the delapidated machine 'neat' and 'cool' and say that “You're doing your best, CB”?"
"Just tell us what you thought about the writing, please!"
"It was ok. You guys seem a lot more dense now."
"Burn this."
"OK WE GET IT, STOP TAUNTING US!"
Sam and Max did leave, but without returning the draft. Which the c.o.p.s needed, because it was the only printed copy.
"First Draft Has A 36% Approval Rate So Far."
"THOSE GUYS ARE JUST LOSERS."
"Not to be a downer but maybe the average consumer finds it hard to relate to CB- I meant Melvin. As unbelievable as that may seem."
"Oh Please. It'll Only Be A Few Edits To Ensure Clarity. Though..."
Curt tried not to think too hard about Mel, how it was oh so very nice to him and his friends and how warm it's body was and how it would sometimes carry & swing him around- Less he start to overheat and break something in him(putting the last time to shame). He really did try his best.
"Perhaps Multiple Versions Aren't A Bad Idea."
