With a concentration of painters, sculptors, writers, photographers, poets, performers, immigrants, beatniks, homosexuals, communists, devil worshipers, and uncategorized eccentrics, San Francisco had tolerance for everything except people from Los Angeles. -- Mark A. Brazilian star Marta and her last chance at World Cup glory
The World Cup has been a major gap in the glittering resume of Marta Vieira da Silva’s 23-year career.
Tumblr media
If Marta comes off the bench and takes to the field for Brazil’s Women’s World Cup opener against Panama on Monday, it would mark her sixth and final involvement in the premier competition of women’s football.
Along with her six World Player of the Year awards, the remarkable feat is set to cement Marta’s place as one of – if not the greatest – women ever to play the sport. The major gap in the glittering resume of Marta Vieira da Silva’s 23-year career, however, is precisely a World Cup trophy.
Neither “Queen Marta” nor the Brazilian national team – so historically successful in the men’s game – have won a world championship, something the current squad hope to change this year in Australia and New Zealand.
Marta’s influence on women’s football in Brazil cannot be understated. The sport was illegal in the country until the mid-1980s, and Marta was Brazil’s first women’s football superstar.

Tagged by @helianskies to post 7 a few lines from a draft (but I'm going through such a dry spell everything looks like a draft to me :,) )
“Please scan the marked pages and upload them into the system,” he mumbled, closing the clasp on his briefcase and quickly glancing around Kirkland’s tidy desk. He had adored Mrs. Vieira with all his heart, wouldn’t have survived without her and her strict former schoolteacher precision throughout the years, but it was nice to see the front desk finally clear of all her grandchildren’s photos and porcelain cats. Kirkland was looking curiously at him when he finally looked up. He was handsome in his own way, with faded freckles scattered over the bridge of his nose and old teenage acne scars. Antonio’s voice came back to haunt him in his mind and Gabriel stepped back from his desk, glancing down at his wristwatch.
I'll tag @oumaheroes, @dinolil1 and @sisididis if they want to!

Today marks the 21st anniversary of the Station Nightclub Fire, which took the lives of 100 people and injured over 200. May we never forget the ones we lost and the ones still suffering.💔🙏
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kelly Lynn Vieira ~ August 31 1962 - March 1, 2003
We lived in Warwick when the Station Night Club fire happened.
Kelly was the physical therapy assistant where I was going to at Orthopedic Associates when I had carpal tunnel. She was such a sweet person. I will never forget her. 🙏💔🕯🕊
Matt and a friend of his were going to be at this nightclub, but one of them overslept and so they decided not to go.
Kelly and her husband, Scott, were high school sweethearts. She was a majorette at Case High School, in Swansea, and he was a student at Durfee High School, in Fall River. They both attended school sporting events.
On Valentine's Day in 2003, they had celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary.
After a few years as a hairdresser, Kelly went back to school, to the Community College of Rhode Island, and became a physical therapist assistant.
For the six years prior to this tragedy, she had worked at Orthopedic Associates, in Cranston.
Scott occasionally helped out at the club, and was working security the night of the Great White concert. He escaped uninjured. Kelly died March 1 at Boston Shriners Hospital.
Photographs taken by someone inside the club moments before the fire started show Kelly standing near the stage, friends said.

Hello! :) I’m interested in reading some books in (Br) Portuguese and I’m not sure where to start looking. I tend to read fantasy and romance but also enjoy contemporary fiction; would you have any recommendations? Thank you for your time!! Have a lovely day :3
Hey!! You came to the right place ;)
A cabeça do santo / The head of the Saint by Socorro Acioli (contemporary & fantansy-ish) - It's a story greatly inspired by Gabriel García Márquez because the author was his student. In this book we follow the journey of Samuel, whose mother, on her deathbed, asked him to go find his father. His destination is an almost ghost city where there's a statue of a saint. He ends up living in the head of this statue (it's separeted from the body) and starts to hear the voices of women praying to the saint. It's a really interesting and funny story.
Torto Arado / Crooked Plow by Itamar Vieira Júnior (contemporary & fantasy-ish) - This book was a phenomenon during the covid pandemic and it's now considered one of the most important novel of the century so far. It's the story of two sisters, who are deeply connected by an accident that happened during their childhood. It's also the story of a knife that connects them to their grandma. It's both fantastical and realist and it talks about women, family, spirituality, slavery and political struggles.
Tudo é rio / Everything is river* by Carla Madeira (romance) - Love it or hate it, this book left its mark. Here we have the story of a couple that is completely changed after a tragic loss and the story of the most desired whore in the city. Everything is river, everything flows, beware to not drown.
O pássaro secreto / The secret bird* by Marilia Arnaud (psychological romance - tw: rape, anxiety, depression, bullying) - This book is hauthingly beautiful. It's a family drama from the pov of the eldest daughet Aglaia Negromonte. Her life is completely changed when the secret of her father is brought to light: a daugther out of wedlock. Not only that, she's coming to live with them - bringing jealousy, envy and anger to Aglaia's already troubled mind. How can a girl move on when all her life is taken away, litte by little?
Hope you enjoy it! <3

No. 1 Cal Sweeps No. 9 Stanford At Big Row
Cal Retains Schwabacher Cup
REDWOOD CITY – The No. 1 California men's rowing team had a successful outing at the Big Row against No. 9 Stanford, taking both the varsity and second varsity eight races at Redwood Shores on Saturday and retaining the Schwabacher Cup. The Golden Bears have now won nine straight matchups against the Cardinal and extended their series lead to 70-19. Both crews remain undefeated this season heading into the Pac-12 Championships in two weeks. In the varsity eight race, Cal was able to build an open-water lead of about two seats by the 1,000-meter mark. Stanford was able to keep the distance over the next 500 meters, before the Bears made a push to extend their lead to a few seats of open water to win by five seconds in a time of 5:31.7. In the second varsity eight race, the Bears got off to a great start and built a three-seat lead in the opening 500 meters before extending it to open water by the halfway mark. Cal continued to extend its lead through the sprint and won in convincing fashion, almost 25 seconds ahead of the Cardinal, with a time of 5:41.2. "I thought both crews raced really well," Cal head coach Scott Frandsen said. "I wanted today to be an internal, positive-momentum-building kind of race and I think there was that for both crews. The second varsity got off to a really good start and got out early and just extended the lead through the rest of the race course, so I was pleased with how they performed. The varsity had a really good race. Stanford stuck with them through the middle, but we were able to win by a second or so of open water. So good results and execution of the race for the guys. Now we have two weeks to build towards the Pac-12 Championships." Results V8+ 1. Cal - 5:31.7 2. Stanford - 5:36.0 2V8+ 1. Cal - 5:41.2 2. Our body never stops speaking. To doctors, its signs indicate whether the machine is functioning well or poorly. The body can, however, say much more, as it is also our living history, the result of our encounters and of what has marked us and constituted us, even before birth.
Our body never stops speaking. To doctors, its signs indicate whether the machine is functioning well or poorly. The body can, however, say much more, as it is also our living history, the result of our encounters and of what has marked us and constituted us, even before birth.
That’s what Freud discovered, as well as that when we touch these sayings, made up from more than words, but also of sensations and image fragments, we affect the body’s life itself and its jouissance.
What, of this veritable rain of speaking that falls upon us, will count though? What will be part of us, constituting us as subjects? The very unit of the body is not given from the beginning. We need somebody, a mother or somebody who looks after us, to give it consistency, little by little. Only when I am capable of experiencing the swarm of sayings that cross this body as my own, does this body that thus far was spoken of, become a speaking body, my body.
Today, all that is used to support the unity of imaginary identification tends to be replaced with the legion of pieces of knowledge from Google, that befall children. We have reason to ask whether something has changed in the Other’s mirror.

Ketlen Vieira vs Miesha Tate
Ketlen Vieira (13-2) is riding high off of back to back wins against former champions Miesha Tate and Holly Holm. Which is wild cause you can still see how a lacking confidence in her striking is holding her back. In fact, you’d think such wins would propel her into an instant title shot but no. They were marked with such timidity on her part that she’s likely going to need one more win to get a shot at Amanda Nunes.
Vieira will face off with Raquel Pennington (14-8) at UFC Fight Night: Imavov vs. Gastelum this Saturday (Jan. 14), with the winner possibly getting themselves a title fight.

what are your favorite books on old hollywood (the era and actors)? also, did you like deborah peterson's or charles tranberg's book on freddie better?
i’m only just seeing this question now, so i’m very sorry if this was sent a while ago! i didn’t mean to ignore you, anon!
some of my favorite books are:
Dangerous Men by Mick LaSalle
Irving Thalberg: Boy Wonder to Producer Prince by Mark A. Vieira
Wide-eyed in Babylon by Ray Milland
Norma Shearer by Gavin Lambert
Life is a Banquet by Rosalind Russell and Chris Chase
i enjoyed both tranberg’s and peterson’s books equally and i consider them must-reads for any freddie fans. it’s been quite some time since i’ve read either, but i do remember that peterson was able to talk with some of freddie’s relatives, which made the book feel a bit more personal. what i didn’t really enjoy was how her obvious dislike of florence crept into her writing at some parts. it kind of took me out of the biography, if that makes sense. i think, and i might be misremembering, she implied that florence wasn’t right for freddie, like not fun enough or something lol. other than that little nitpick, i thought it was a great book with interesting stories i’d never heard before :)

"PUMA first introduced a women’s specific fit over two years ago and we have continued to refine and roll out this offering across all of our silos”, said Stephanie Vieira, Product Line Manager Teamsport Footwear, PUMA. “We feel it is important to support our female athletes with the best equipment with a fit that is tailored to the anatomical shape of a women’s foot.”
The FUTURE women’s combines the latest FUTURE technology with measurements engineered specifically for a women’s foot - such as volume and instep height, resulting in a comfortable fit that will drive opponents crazy just like Julia Grosso throughout the 90 minutes, match after match.

Designed with minimal weight in mind for maximum speed and a high-performance, the ultra-lightweight ULTRAWEAVE upper allows players to channel their inner Fridolina Rolfö when flying down the wings, with an edge that can be the difference between winning or losing.
With the return to the pitch of the KING of football boots, PUMA has introduced a women specific KING. Built to be the King of Control, the non-animal-based K-BETTER™ upper material takes the signature KING touch, comfort and durability to the next-level, whilst maximum maneuverability is achieved through a lightweight outsole with external heel counter, integrated stability spine and conical studs - to be worn by midfield maestro Ingrid Engen.

100 Days of Brazil's Foreign Ministry under Lula Had Relationship Mending and Erroneous Priorities
The foreign policy led by Mauro Vieira and Celso Amorim sends multiple nods, resumes prominence, and experiences internal pressure
Tumblr media
Celso Amorim went to Russia to sell Lula's idea of a "peace club" to Putin to stop the ongoing war in Ukraine. The trip represented the most recent wave of Brazilian foreign policy, once again under Lula's leadership. The first hundred days of the new Itamaraty ( Ministry of Foreign Affairs) were marked by multiple nods in several directions. The challenge now is to clarify what will be a priority. With the hangover of Bolsonarism —a period that separated Brazil from China, its main economic partner, and almost turned the country into a pariah— the general climate regarding the foreign agenda headed by Lula, Chancellor Mauro Vieira, and Celso Amorim is one of optimism.
However, diplomats and academics point out that, from now on, it is necessary to measure the materiality of these proposals and, of course, which will come first. "When there is a multiplicity of priorities, one can incur errors in implementing and materializing some projects", says Hussein Kalout, a Harvard researcher and member of the Brazilian Center for International Relations (Cebri). In three months, the cabinet nodded to South America, the US, China —where Lula is traveling this week—, the European Union, the environmental agenda, gender equality, and the War in Ukraine.

ANDREW LORD NAMED ECHL COACH OF THE YEAR
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fourth-year bench boss becomes first in both franchise and Greenville hockey history to receive recognition By: Mark Binetti, Greenville Swamp Rabbits GREENVILLE, SC—The ECHL announced today that Andrew Lord, Head Coach/General Manager of the Greenville Swamp Rabbits, a proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, received the John Brophy Award as the ECHL's Coach of the Year. Lord, who finished as runner-up for the award in his first season in 2021, becomes the first coach in both franchise and Greenville professional hockey history to receive the league's honor. The John Brophy Award is presented annually to the ECHL coach who has contributed the most to his team's success. The coach is chosen by ECHL coaches, broadcasters, media relations directors, and media members. The trophy is named for John Brophy, who won a record three ECHL titles with Hampton Roads in 1991, 1992, and 1998 and was inducted into the ECHL Hall of Fame in 2009. This season, Lord guided the Swamp Rabbits to a 44-23-4-1 record and 93 points in the standings, claiming the organization's first South Division Championship in over a decade with a second straight 40-win campaign. Additionally, the Swamp Rabbits earned their 30th win of the season in just 42 games, the fastest pace ever in Greenville professional hockey history. They won eight straight road games from November 14th to December 9th, a new franchise record. By holding the highest win percentage in the Eastern Conference before the Christmas break, Lord was named one of two coaches of the ECHL All-Star Team for the 2024 ECHL All-Star Classic in January. "I'm extremely honored to receive this award from the ECHL. It's truly humbling," said Lord. "A recognition like this is a true testament to the organization that we have here in Greenville. From Assistant Coach Kyle Mountain, Video Coach River Pease, our support staff in Alec Muise and AJ Smith, our players, front office, and ownership, this is a collective effort and a true reflection of our culture and determination to be better both on the ice and in the community. I'm grateful to Jeff Dickerson, our owner, Todd Mackin, Tim Vieira, our President, and everyone who made this season possible. It's a true honor, and I'm thankful for the ECHL's recognition." Over four years in the Upstate, Lord has compiled a 155-94-30-9 record in 288 games, a 0.606 win percentage. He's led the Swamp Rabbits to the Kelly Cup Playoffs each season, reaching as far as the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals in his first campaign. "I couldn't be prouder of Andrew in receiving this honor from the ECHL. It is very much well deserved," said Todd Mackin, President of Spire Holdings. "It was apparent during our hiring process four years ago that Andrew had what it takes to transform our team into one of the most competitive in the entire ECHL. He tirelessly works with his staff to build a team that's worthy of representing our community and competing amongst the best in the league. Back-to-back 40-win seasons, postseason qualification each year, and over a dozen players promoted to the American Hockey League only scratches the surface of where his career trajectory will take him. We are grateful for everything he's done for our team, both on and off the ice. I look forward to watching him continue this excellence as he pursues our first Kelly Cup Championship as an organization." Before joining Greenville before the 2020-21 season, Lord led the Cardiff Devils of the Elite Ice Hockey League to nine separate titles, including three Conference championships, two Challenge Cup championships, two League titles, and two Playoff championships. As the winningest coach in Devils history, he led the team to a 221-75-22 record across his six seasons as head coach. Before entering the coaching ranks, Lord enjoyed a lengthy professional hockey career out of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). He spent ten seasons in the pro ranks, totaling 462 games. His best work as a pro was done in the EIHL, where he scored 173 points in 216 games, all with Cardiff. "Coach Lord epitomizes what it takes to be the best at his craft. The accountability and urgency he brings to our team make us better as an organization, not only on the ice, but off the ice and in the community," said Tim Vieira, Swamp Rabbits President. "Working with him is an immense privilege. His leadership of our men on the ice and our support staff has been evident from the very first day we worked together – and this recognition is a culmination of that dedication since day one. From coaching the ECHL All-Stars, to setting team records, and elevating everyone around him, there is no one more deserving of this honor." Cal Men’s Rowing Wins National Championship
Bears Varsity Eight Caps Undefeated Season With 18th IRA Title
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The varsity eight entered Sunday's Grand Final with an undefeated record this spring, and with 1,000 meters to go at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championship, the Cal men's rowing team's hard work was showing signs of a hard-fought victory. With the win, the Bears secured the program's 18th national championship and 100th national title overall for Cal Athletics. The Varsity Challenge Cup was not the only hardware Cal took home. The Bears' second varsity eight won silver in the Kennedy Cup in a thrilling comeback.  "Really proud of how the guys raced today," said head coach Scott Frandsen. "A full team effort leading to the varsity being able to really have their best race of the year and represent the team and win. They executed their race perfectly, really happy for those nine guys and the full 60 guys on the team. This has been the goal all year and the guys did it." Like it did all season, the V8+ got off to a fast start. The top four boats of Cal, Yale, Washington, and Brown separated themselves from the remainder of the field in the first 100 meters. By the 500-meter mark, the Bears had a two-seat advantage on the Bulldogs. By the 1,000-meter mark, the Bears and Bulldogs pulled away from the rest of the field, with Cal extending its lead over Yale. The Bears' championship boat, led by Pac-12 Male Athlete of the Year Ollie Maclean, Newcomer of the Year Gennaro di Mauro as well as all-conference honorees Elliott Kemp, Angus Dawson, and Campbell Crouch, defeated a Yale boat that featured three Olympians by over two seconds, finishing with a time of 5:44.239. Cal took home their 18th Varsity Challenge Cup in a long and storied history stretching back nearly a century. The Golden Bears also won national championships in 1928, '32, '34, '35, '39, '49, '60, '61, '64, '76, '99, '00, '01, '02, '06,'10 and ‘16.  It is also believed to be the first undefeated season for the V8+ since 2001 when Frandsen was in the boat for the Bears. In the battle for the Stewards Cup, Yale, Harvard, and Washington took the early lead. The Bears began their move over the final 1,000 meters to try to chase down Dartmouth and Washington for a place on the podium but ran out of race track to take fifth with a time of 6:11.513. In the final for the Kennedy Cup, the 2V8+ was tremendous. The Bears opened the race in the lead pack but sat in fifth behind leaders Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, and Washington. At the 1,000-meter mark, Cal began its charge, moving into third and closing fast. Over the final 100 meters, the Bears took control of second and held off Dartmouth, capturing silver by over three seconds with a time of 5:54.052.
