Animal of the Day!
Deepsea Lizardfish (Bathysaurus ferox)
Tumblr media
(Photo from Ocean Conservancy)
Conservation Status- Least Concern
Habitat- Indo-Pacific Ocean; Atlantic Ocean
Size (Weight/Length)- 60 cm
Diet- Fish; Crustaceans; Other deepsea lizardfish
Cool Facts- The deepsea lizardfish lives up to 3,500 meters below the surface. This makes them one of the deepest, living, apex predators. Their bodies are relatively flat, allowing them to lay flush against the ocean floor. When an unknowing fish swims past, the deepsea lizardfish uses its enormous, tooth-lined mouth to snare prey. Their massive pupils help the lizardfish to see the smallest flashes of bioluminescent light to spot food. Like the majority of ocean life, deepsea lizardfish are threatened by overfishing of their prey and rapid ocean acidification.
Rating- 13/10 (Yes, this is from Earth and not 4546B.)

Alrighty last time went well, so bugblr and ocean lovers - what is this thing I found a few years ago? It was roughly two knuckle lengths long, on a west coach beach, and very smooth to the touch. Clingy little legs, just an absolute Thing! It’s been a minor mystery of my life I’d love to get solved, but if not? I’ll be fine

Smoked some of my oil pen today (I really must do this more often; a thing I say every single time) and then when I got home I had to learn all about sea stars and how they move, due to an analogy my mind came up with whilst thinking about how hard it is going to be to peel myself off the internet to pack my belongings for the move.
That sentence was:
“I will be taking a break from the internet, which I’m not sure how I will accomplish, since peeling me away from Tumblr is like pulling a reluctant sea star off a glass window.”
“Wait how do sea stars even move?”
They do The Wave constantly.
They suck up water through a tube that looks like a butthole, which leads to a ring canal around the centre of the sea star’s body, then the water goes from there to the arm canals, and it squeezes water all over to scoot around (verrrrrry slowly on rocks and sand) the water inside its arms and its lil feet just move water around to move! It’s got seawater inside it 24/7 and is super weird to read about with absolutely no exp except high school on learning how a sea creature moves besides a fish.
Let’s see it in motion! Because I’m still having trouble picturing it via words alone.

This is friggen amazing. And the way they eat is the most metal thing I have ever heard of.
ALso, here’s ZeFrank talking about them.

Animal of the Day!
Monterey Sea Lemon (Doris montereyensis)
Tumblr media
(Photo from iNaturalist)
Conservation Status- Unlisted
Habitat- Western North America coast
Size (Weight/Length)- 10 cm
Diet- Sponges; Carrion
Cool Facts- Looking like a mixture of a lemon, a rabbit, and a slug, the Monterey sea lemon is not as cuddly as its appearance. Sea lemons, hence the name, have an extremely acidic and fruity taste that wards off possible predators. These sea slugs have sandpaper-like tongues that can saw through sea sponges as they travel across the ocean floor. Their bright yellow coloration comes from the chromatophores within the sponges they eat. The two ‘ears’ at the front of their head are actually used to taste and smell for carrion to snack on. Monterey sea lemons are hermaphrodites and can mate with any other sea lemon they encounter, both getting pregnant. Releasing two million eggs each, these abundant fellows aren’t disappearing any time soon.
Rating- 13/10 (Nudibranch supremacy.)
