CINEMAGOOEY
I had a happy childhood - a middle-class upbringing, the ranch house in the 'burbs on a quiet street, bestie sleepovers complete with canopy beds and giddy secrets. My younger years weren't perfect -no one gets a pass from childhood traumas and tragedies. But overall it was an uncomplicated and sweet time in the 70's.
But as great as it was, I still needed escape. So I ran away from reality as often as possible in those early years, fleeing to the movies, my drug of choice.
A Saturday movie excursion was a life or death necessity for me. I would beg, cajole and bargain with my parents for ticket money and a ride to the theater. There in the solitude of a dark theater, the projector would roll and magic would unfurl like a shimmering kaleidoscope. I became lost in a land of imagination and wonder, mesmerized in a celluloid world of make-believe.
I never outgrew my love of cinema; it expanded exponentially. There's something about immersing oneself in a good story in the sanctity of of your own home or in a popcorn scented theatre that speaks to me and whisks me to my happy place. Something magic happens when we engage with cinema. The good ones either lift us up and sing to us, or wound our hearts in a sweet, interminable way. The bad ones have us shaking our heads at the fact that we'll never get the time back. Either way, movies grab us, whirl us around in a dizzying dance and then push us out in the sunlight, dazed at the experience.
Let's get into the good ones. Let's dig into some old fashioned hoopla about really great cinema.
I'll begin with one of my favorites genres:
FOREIGN FILM
J'adore foreign film. I'm never put off by subtitles and find these movies to be some of the richest, most sumptuous of all cinema. Foreign film connects us to the world. It gifts the viewer with an intimate window through which we peek into other cultures, other lands and native stories. We climb into the vivid imaginings of filmmakers, whose minds were cultivated and nurtured in exotic locales. It's a form of travel without costly airfare and jet lag, with the bonus of a good story.
Here are my top three recommended foreign films that I've viewed of late:
CLARA SOLA
Tumblr media
A stunner of a movie resplendent with gorgeous cinematography, this 2021 film written and directed by Nathalie Álvarez Mesén unfolds in a tiny village in Costa Rica. Clara, a 40 year old with mental and physical disabilities, lives with her fanatically religious mother and niece Maria, a fifteen year old who gleefully prepares for her Quinceanera. Middle-aged, curious and child-like, Clara's life is spent communicating with the family's white horse, being a pawn to her mother's money-making schemes and watching Maria's life bloom as she stands on the sensual precipice of adulthood. When handsome Santiago arrives on the scene, wooing Maria in a forbidden way, something awakens in Clara and she decides that she wants what Maria has. With bold stubbornness and using mystical powers that lend an supernatural aura to the story, Clara sets out to claim it all in her own awkward, humorous way - with devastating results. Fantastical, shimmering scenes set against a backdrop of naked poverty make this movie sing in a way that made my soul ache, and the brilliant screenplay had me laughing out loud and alternately tearing up.
Tumblr media
Amazing performances by Wendy Chinchilla Araya as Clara and Daniel Casteñeda Ricón as Santiago, Maria's boyfriend and Clara's secret crush. This should have been a Best Foreign Film nominee (if not winner) at the 94th Academy Awards. It's not easy to find Clara Sola; I had to stream it with a Criterion Collection subscription, but it's worth digging around to unearth this hidden gem.
THE ZONE OF INTEREST
Tumblr media
Buckle up. Watching this movie is like taking a joy ride with your scary older cousin behind the wheel; you want to enjoy it, but instead you feel terrified and little like throwing up. That's the point of Jonathan Glazer's chilling masterpiece The Zone of Interest.
Rudolph is a rising star in the military. His wife Hedwig cultivates a home for their children on a quaint country estate. But this is no Leave It To Beaver redux. Rudolph is a commandant in Hitler's Nazi party and Hedwig's carefully built utopia lies just over the wall from Auschwitz, which Rudolph manages. So close is their little manse to the concentration camp that the family can hear the daily horrors of screams and gunshots, and the fiery glow of the gas chambers illuminates the evening sky. To these recurring abominations, the family turns a deaf ear and a blind eye as they go about their idyllic life.
This cruel indifference is what makes The Zone of Interest so harrowing to watch.
Rudolph prizes his lilac bushes more than the innocent lives he slaughters, and Hedwig engages in chilling acts of depraved apathy: haughtily accepting a fur coat that Rudolph gifts her (booty from a Holocaust victim), and hosting her mother in the garden as a prisoner can be heard pleading for his life from the other side of the wall.
Part of this movie's power lies in the fact that the viewer never sees the acts taking place inside the concentration camp - the brutal sounds of savagery overlaying a lush, bucolic setting is enough to horrify us.
Tumblr media
The Zone of Interest won both Best International Film and Best Sound at the 2023 Academy Awards. Sandra Hüller's performance as wife Hedwig garnered her a much-deserved Best Supporting Actor (female role) nomination.
This movie is an awful reminder of mankind's grotesque ability to normalize evil with unflinching apathy - especially in the face of cultural pressure or political brainwashing. It made me squirm as I pondered the nature of humanity. I've heard it said on several platforms that this movie is not for entertainment value; I agree. Instead, it's is an opportunity to turn inward and ask ourselves: could these types of horrors happen again? And if so, what would you do?
CINEMA PARADISO
Tumblr media
Some have described Giuseppe Turnatore's 1988 Cinema Paradiso as a love letter to the early age of film. I would call it a slow, seductive kiss, beguiling us to remember the days when going to the cinema was an event.
Everything about this film is perfect - the heart-rending story centered around a small town movie theater, the lush cinematography capturing life in a dusty, Italian village and the trembling soundtrack that tugs at something soulful and primal. All this against the backdrop of cinema classics. It's a wistful salute to the Golden Age of Hollywood and a tender coming of age story in 1940's Italy.
In 1988 Rome, Salvatore Di Vita, a famous film director, learns his old friend Alfredo has died. He immediately flashes back to his childhood as an eight year old in the Sicilian village of Giancarlo, just after WWII. Salvatore's nostalgic flashback encompasses most of this sublime film.
Salvatore (Toto to the villagers), is a precocious child. His father dead, his mother overwhelmed with the everyday indignities of single motherhood, Toto finds escape at the Cinema Paradiso, sneaking in when the town priest sits alone in the empty galley censoring movies. Alfredo, the tired, middle-aged projectionist, is tasked with splicing out the offending bits before the villagers see it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Toto is mesmerized by it all and is madly curious to see how the magic happens in the projection booth. Through pluck and luck, Toto connives Alfredo into giving him a job in as his assistant and the two form a tight, familial bond that is the heart and soul of this film.
Toto is still manning the booth at 16 when he falls hopelessly in love and is called to military duty. Returning home a year later, Alfredo does something surprising and insidious that alters Toto's life forever.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In modern day 1988, Salvatore returns to Giancarlo to attend Alfredo's funeral, and is bequeathed a package that sets up the last, flawless scene in this exquisite film.
Cinema Paradiso is a beautiful reminder of days gone by and things of old that once held meaning and sway over our lives. Before television, computers, the internet and iphones, there was a place where people gathered to be swept up, escape the banality of life and become immersed, briefly, in a world larger than their own.
And isn't that what cinema is all about?

Ridership Sags, Costs Soar, but Shapiro Still Wants More Money for SEPTA
Despite exploding costs and plunging ridership, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) appears in line for another infusion of nearly $300 million in taxpayer cash.
Earlier this week, Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro vowed to increase public transportation funding by $282.8 million.
“Ever since I was a state representative and county commissioner in Montgomery County, I have supported SEPTA and the critical services it offers to hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians every day,” the governor said. “SEPTA has presented plans to address safety and cleanliness throughout their system, and county officials have entertained a willingness to step up to the plate and increase their support. As a result, my administration is prepared to make a major investment in SEPTA.”
It’s yet to be determined how much local funding, if any, Delaware Valley governments will kick in.
SEPTA CEO and General Manager Leslie S. Richards praised Shapiro’s decision. She said it would help SEPTA “address our more pressing needs and…continue [to serve] our communities.” Richards previously said SEPTA might cut services by 20 percent and raise fares by 30 percent. That would raise a Quick Trip Ticket from $2.50 to $3.25 and SEPTA Key and contactless payments from $2 to $2.60.
SEPTA funding and budget issues became a major focus for Democratic politicians after the transit agency revealed that it faced a looming fiscal cliff. It burned through $1.8 billion in federal COVID money between Fiscal Years 2020 and 2023 while generating just $1.18 billion in revenue.
That’s not counting the $2 billion in annual funding from Pennsylvania taxpayers, something independent auditors said was “the largest single source of subsidy revenue.”
An additional $295 million in taxpayer funding was not included in last year’s state budget.
And still ridership numbers continue to fall short of pre-COVID levels. In October 2023, average ridership was just 67 percent of the October 2019 number. On Regional Rail, ridership was just 56 percent of the pre-COVID average.
SEPTA’s cash crunch caused Democratic U.S. Reps. Madelaine Dean, Chrissy Houlahan, and Mary Gay Scanlon to send a letter to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg last month asking for a bailout from federal taxpayers. Democratic Sens. Bob Casey Jr. and John Fetterman signed the letter, as did Rep. Dwight Evans (D-Philadelphia). “Without strong, sustained federal support, Pennsylvanians risk losing transit access entirely,” the lawmakers wrote. “As the Department of Transportation continues its critical work, we urge you to prioritize SEPTA and Pennsylvania’s transit systems.”
Now, there’s a chance that SEPTA may get a partial state bailout, if not a federal one.
That’s music to the ears of Democrats representing Delaware Valley in Harrisburg.
“From the ‘burbs to the city, SEPTA connects us to jobs, doctors’ appointments, recreation, shopping, and so much more,” state Sen. Maria Collett (D-Montgomery) posted on social media after learning of the federal lawmakers’ letter. She expressed gratitude for their “fighting for more federal dollars to keep this critical system afloat.”
State Rep. Morgan Cephas (D-Philadelphia) hoped Shapiro would go further. She said SEPTA needed even more cash to make sure more seniors and workers take mass transportation. “SEPTA alone moves over half a million people every day to their jobs, families, school, medical appointments, and more…”
The reasons for the declining ridership vary. Numerous complaints from riders to the Better Business Bureau focus on late buses or trains. Others complained that drivers focused more on beating red lights instead of serving customers.
Crime remains a big problem for SEPTA as well. Statistics show the number of disorderly conduct and public urination and defecation cases since 2019 have increased far higher than ridership, from 213 to more than 1,300 in 2022.
Robberies jumped from 118 in 2019 to 217 in 2021, while aggravated assaults almost doubled from 46 to 86 in the same period.
That meant significant increases in SEPTA expenses. Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) statistics show SEPTA spent $1.44 per passenger miles traveled on commuter rail in 2022 compared to 49 cents per passenger mile in 2013. For bus passengers, it was $2.66 in 2022 versus $1.09 in 2013. Streetcar rail was $2.87 in 2022 and only .94 cents in 2013.
Pennsylvania Senate Majority Leader Joe Pittman (R-41) said SEPTA gets enough money.
“Supporting SEPTA’s request for increased state subsidy is a challenging argument to make, especially in light of Philadelphia District Attorney (Larry) Krasner’s inability to maintain law and order throughout America’s sixth largest city,” he said. “No amount of increased subsidy can restore customer confidence in making use of the network given the raging crime crisis Krasner perpetuates.”
The Commonwealth Foundation said the state government needs to take a new look at how it funds mass transit.
“Several years ago, state mass transit funding was moved offline into a special fund, taking a portion of sales tax revenue and Turnpike tolls to fund transit systems,” said Nathan Benefield, the Commonwealth Foundation’s senior vice president. “Unlike the General Fund, lawmakers don’t vote on this spending every single year.
“Should lawmakers examine how much state funding goes into those programs? We think they should.”
On Feb. 6, Josh Shapiro will hold his annual budget address.

Tumblr media
« Agente Burb, cosa sta succedendo?
[ John ] « ...ma...adesso come state?
[ Brandy ] « R-RIAPRIRETE IL CASO DI MIO MARITO SKIP?!
[ John ] « Arrivederci signorina Broke e buona giornata. »
[ Brandy ] « ...buona...giornata agente... »

by Kurt Schmidt:
For anyone that loves Christmas, Music, and Travelling Vienna at Christmas is a must see destination.
Christmas Season Officially starts on November 14 with the opening of the first Christmas Markets at "Rat Hall" or translated properly City Hall. Other Christmas Markets open over the next few days and by late November all the Christmas Markets are open.
Tumblr media
City Hall Market is by far the largest and most crowded but well work at least one visit. If your more in a family affair you can't beat the Christmas Market at Karls Platz. There is everything for the entire family to enjoy. The Highlight for the youngest in your family will be the Petting zoo with a very Christmas setting.
This Christmas Market might just be the easiest of all to find and get to as it is right at one of the largest subway stations in Vienna.
Tumblr media
Make sure to explorer all of Vienna there are a great many Christmas markets. Go out into the "sub-burbs'" which are only 5 minutes from central Vienna via bus or subway. And incase this your first time in Vienna the locals spell it "Wien". See below for our favorite Christmas Markets in Vienna.
Even at Christmas Vienna is a city of music. Christmas is a time between other major events in Vienna because Christmas is the Major event. Even So there are still great musicals, Chamber orchestra, plays, operas and more to see.  Before you leave get on the plane make sure you have purchased your tickets to the show you want to see. Most shows are for a small crowd and group tours can some times book them out well in advance.
Besides seeing a show, you must visit Belvedere at night during Christmas and take a picture. The cover photo for this piece is Belvedere Palace at night. During the day is also a great time to go into Belvedere Palace and see the museum.
The one thing no one tells people coming to Vienna is that Vienna is CLOSED on Sundays. Don’t plan on going shopping for anything or Eating out at local eatery on Sunday nothing will be open. If you need a day to recover or want to day to see the city on foot Sunday is the day.
While you’re at the Christmas markets make sure to get some Christmas punch or “Weihnachtspunsch”. Every Market has its own unique cup that you can “rent” or keep. You pay your deposit for your first cup, and just pay for refills. At the end of the night you can keep it or return it for your deposit back. Christmas Punch comes in dozens of flavors so if you don’t like the first one or even the second one there are plenty more to try.
Tumblr media
Another must visit location is GRABEN AND KÄRNTNER STRASS there is a Christmas market here but the Lights and Carriage Rids are the must do activity. You will also get a good tour of the local area and may find a great many shops you want to revisit during the day. Did I say? Your first trip here should be after dark so you can see the lights. Due to the Church’s location and the major subway station under it you probable be back here several times.
Tumblr media
One of those other activities you should book as soon as you have a date set for Vienne is the Spanish Riding School. You can get tickets the day of, but you will be standing and there will be columns and people in front of you. Best to book the “royal” seats which are the only seats that can see the entire show.
Tumblr media
You have plenty of choice were to eat in Vienna but if your expecting sit down service you better make a reservation.
You can get stuffed at the Christmas markets with everything from sweets to full meals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you’re not short on time, and you love to ski it is will worth renting a car and driving up to one of the ski resorts neat Salzburg. While you there you should also visit the Castle and the local Christmas market. If your not that great with navigation its no problem, when renting the car make sure to get GPS, have them put the car into English, AND most important of all ensure you are allowed to take it into Germany. That means pay for the vignette aka toll Sticker for Germany, it is a flat rate per day. Salzburg is very close to Germany, if your great at navigation and your not going to Germany you can save the money.

New from Every Movie Has a Lesson by Don Shanahan: REWIND REVIEW: Where’d You Go, Bernadette
Tumblr media
(Image: cnn.com)
For an occasional new segment, Every Movie Has a Lesson will cover upcoming home media releases combining an “overdue” or “rewind” film review, complete with life lessons, and an unboxed look at special features.
WHERE’D YOU GO, BERNADETTE
There are parallels between which filmmaker Richard Linklater always seems to operate. It was either “free-wheeling fun” or “poignant realism” with “scant middle ground.” Call them Party Linklater and Deep Linklater. The question mark skipped from the title of Where’d You Go, Bernadette can be placed in the sentence of which Linklater did we get? Welcome to the uncharted and unexpected “scant middle ground” where grandiose fiction is the party and odd eccentricity is the depth.
Neurotically charming, yet misshapen in many ways, Where’d You Go, Bernadette is wholly unique from the Texan and Hollywood outsider. The movie has the equal ability to disarm and disgust depending on your perspective or experience with the Maria Semple source material. Non-readers will float with the staccato blustering and the Antarctic kayak currents of fancy. Ardent fans will wonder where all the scintillating mystery went that gave merit to all the haphazard happenings beset on the family of narrator Balakrishna Branch, affectionately known as “Bee” and played by debuting talent Emma Nelson.
ANTICIPATORY SET AND PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:
Bee is the uber-precocious 15-year-old daughter of a pair of brilliant-minded, attracted opposites. Her father is the Microsoft-backed tech innovator Elgin Branch, played by Billy Crudup, earning industry kudos and TED Talk stages with groundbreaking new mind-to-text recognition software. The extroverted and borderline workaholic is matched by his reclusive and agoraphobic wife and Bee’s titular mother, played by Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett and her bangs. Detailed by exposition-minded video essays viewed by characters on screen, Bernadette Fox was once the toast of Los Angeles and the most brilliant architectural design savant of her generation before professional disappointment burned and stomped over her creativity.
LESSON #1: “THE BRAIN IS A DISCOUNTING MECHANISM” — Bernadette’s own explanatory observations of self-diagnosis are fueled by empirical study, plenty of science, and a side of doubting bullshit. It’s true that the brain looks for risk and signals accordingly. To call it a design flaw for danger instead of joy, however, is where you squint at the woman’s nuttiness to a degree. Still, this background and Cate’s delivery of it all sheds light on the movie’s nervous system.
For years, Bernadette has buried herself in two projects: being a mom and endlessly tinkering with restoring a huge derelict old school building into the family’s home in the Seattle burbs. Anxiety has grown into to insomnia and a racing heart during social and domestic confrontations. Her most common clashes are anything requiring Bernadette to interact and keep up with the joneses of the hoity-toity private school Bee attends (something matching of Semple’s inspiration). That judgy crowd is led by the granola and snooty next door neighbor Audrey (Kristen Wiig) and her minion Soo-Lin (TV actress Zoe Chao) who works with Elgin.
LESSON #2: DIFFERING PERSPECTIVES ON FAILING LIVES — We learn a great deal about where Elgin and Bernadette stand in a dynamite sequence of two separated venting sessions. Elgin has approached a psychiatrist (Judy Greer) about how to deal with his wife. In a different location, Bernadette catches up with an old colleague (Laurence Fishburne) that she hasn’t seen in years. Deftly constructed with surgical editing from Linklater regular Sandra Adair, his lament combines with her rant. His conclusion is help while hers is to create, showing just how far apart the two former lovebirds are now.
Outside of her impressionable daughter, Bernadette’s verbose and unrestrained external monologue is received and filtered through “Manjula,” her unseen automated text-to-speech personal assistant service. Even with the prospect of an Antarctic cruise vacation for Bee on the horizon, all of the loose threads of Bernadette’s current course are unraveling to several breaking points. Everyone can see these potential disasters coming except her and the loyal Bee who considers her mother her best friend.
MY TAKE:
LESSON #3: LOVE SOMEONE’S FLAWS — The movie presents a family that still loves the mess that Bernadette has become. Her husband, for all his worry, remains a willing confidante. The nearly unconditional love between daughter and mother is tremendous. Mom defends her daughter’s independence and the resilient girl gives it right back in the face of the catty other moms. Accepting and inspiring familial love trumps every quirk or mistake and the film forces a great many syrup-coated steps to ensure that happens.
Showing off as much if not more unstable petulance as she did winning the Oscar for Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, Cate Blanchett bring a dizzying level of detail to her characterization of depressed pizzazz and wallowing pluck and play Bernadette Fox. There is never a wasted movement or breath with Cate. This is complete immersion and her vocal and physical expressions and actions of exasperation are fascinating to watch. Sure, maybe we’ve seen this level of difficulty before from the newly-minted 50-year-old, but the capability and brilliance she brings to these odd roles is nearly second to none. Put her right there next to Meryl Streep where her dedication to any and every challenge cannot be questioned.
Across from that celebrated star of rich and storied career heights is Emma Nelson, the rookie in her first movie. Experience be damned, she becomes the emotional linchpin of the whole darn thing. Every arc of personal improvement for Bernadette lifts one for Bee and the first-timer exudes mettle and moxie. That girl is going places besides just her next year of high school.
Admittedly, Where’d You Go, Bernadette is tricky business for Richard Linklater. Semple’s best-seller is a uniquely mystery-driven collection of documents, emails, and transcripts, stuff not easy or clear to translate on screen without heavy narration or the wild visual creativity of something like Searching. Linklater and the Me and Orson Welles screenwriting team of Holly Gent and Vince Palmo bent and stripped away that hop-scotch of truth and “you never know everything” intrigue to fashion something more straight-forward and safe as a character piece narrative. In doing so, the resulting film skimps on opportunities to wreck more havoc in personal lives. The fits and spurts of how far to raise eyebrows comes out in the film’s unevenness. Luckily, the acting is steadfast and satisfying.
LESSON #4: TAKE A JOURNEY OF SELF-DISCOVERY — Critique aside, the clear goal for Linklater was to create or hone something more pleasant than a tawdry yarn of competing gossip. The third act of this movie takes a walkabout-ish excursion and turn for Bernadette and company brings aims positivity to elevate the doldrums of everyone’s downward spiral. Choose your journey to reinvigorate your soul. The Antarctica location doesn’t matter. It’s the fact you take one when you need it most.
3 STARS

The 20th Century Fox home media edition of Where’d You Go, Bernadette offers a tiny sprinkle of background on Linklater’s feature film. Tiny does mean tiny. There are only three special features and one of them is a 26-picture gallery of production stills. That’s hardly a deep dive. Someday, a talkative casual guy like director Richard Linklater needs to grace us with an audio commentary on the level with his legendary Dazed & Confused track. Until then, these vignette crumbs made the Trailer Park Content house will have to do.
The main feature is the 15-minute “Bringing Bernadette to Life.” It’s a sharp behind-the-scenes retrospective on how this project came to be with its assembled talent. The blue-jeans-casual director talks about how he was introduced to and dissected Maria Semple’s book with his trusted screenwriting collaborators Holly Gent and Vince Palmo. Linklater was captivated from the opening line of “Just because you can’t fully know somebody doesn’t mean you can’t try” while Cate Blanchett called it a “bugger” to adapt with its format of letters and emails. Richard’s goal was the show everything about the main character and not shy away from raw truths and painful confrontations.
Blanchett was the actress Linklater pictured while reading Semple’s novel and came to realize she was the only one to pull off this discombobulated lead role. The Oscar winner puts in her interview time in the feature discussing all the quirks and themes. For a fun fact, Blanchett wore Semple’s own sunglasses from when she wrote the novel. Furthermore, nice bouquets are also shared by Emma Nelson, Billy Crudup, and Kristen Wiig. Each player speaking on the main character and her wavelengths.
The second mini-doc is the five-minute “Who Is Bernadette.” For a movie about thinking and talking out loud, we get the talent thinking and talking out loud. It’s more of the same with the edited montages set to the voiceover sharing of the cast and crew. It’s not much, but the insight is appreciated, especially with Semple herself offering her stamp of approval. All in all, the special features won’t be the reason one purchases this movie. They’ll be there for the finished film itself.

Weekends are for brunch
When my German friends and colleagues ask me what food is typically Australian I generally respond with “Brunch!” My answer often gets some pretty puzzled looks. Of course, Germany has breakfast and brunch…but they just don’t do it Aussie style.
As my Aussie friends know, Australian cities and towns are absolutely packed with breakfast and brunch options. Sydney doesn’t disappoint with green smoothies on the go, acai bowls by the beach, eggs benedicts in the city, breakfast burgers in the burbs and pancakes for those who like it sweet. We wash it all down with world class coffee and the odd matcha latte.
Europe feels a little newer to the brunch game. Maybe they hibernate in the morning to avoid the cold weather. Don’t get me wrong we’ve found some awesome spots for early breakfast and long brunches on our travels. However, Munich seems to be a little bit of a late bloomer with everyone appreciating a good sleep in and opting for croissants and machine coffee from bakeries. Most places don’t open till 10 or 10.30 in the morning for breakfast, which would be a rare occurrence for a beach side café in Australia.
When we aren’t jet setting for a long weekend or enjoying the German nightlife a little too hard we set out in search of new breakfast and brunch haunts. As I’ve been here for over 8 months now I thought I’d give you a couple of my top picks so far.
LAX Eatery is the closest thing you’ll find to an Aussie cafe. As the name suggests it’s based on the breakfast menus you would find in Los Angeles and it won’t disappoint. If you like your breakfast sweet you’ll find awesome pancakes and the undisputed best French toast in Munich. If you like to start your day with healthy fats than order avocado toast topped with a fried egg and sprinkled with chili salt. Breakfast burritos, acai bowls, overnight oats and banana bread are also featured on the menu. As you can imagine we are regulars here!
For a more traditional German breakfast and a cult favourite in Munich head to Cotidianos. My favourite thing here is the alps breakfast – a lye croissant (like a baked pretzel on the outside but croissant on the inside) stuffed with scrambled eggs, goat cheese and chives. They have beautiful breads and spreads and if you are a chocoholic they serve up an XL mocha.
There is a serious lack of poached eggs in Munich. The best I’ve had are from Joon. The Stulle Avocado serves up poached eggs on a bed of rocket, cherry tomatoes, and avocado crème all on a crunchy piece of brown toast. They also serve pancakes, muesli and huge salads for lunch. You can also pimp your coffee with flavours. My personal favourite is cinnamon.
For a healthier option head to Daddy Long Legs. You can order an acai bowl or earth bowl to eat in or take away. The acai bowl comes with homemade granola. Just pick your toppings – fruits and superfoods, not lollies. Your earthbowl will be made up of quinoa, avocado, baby spinach, red cabbage, carrot and a tangy dressing and can be bulked up with seasonal vegetables, feta, an egg, or some chicken. You could also opt for a smoothie, coffee, tea or a slice of banana bread.
For everything homemade try Kaffee Küche. Translating to coffee kitchen in English this cosy little café is inviting in the cold weather and offers sunny outdoor seating in Rosenheimerplatz for summer. You’ll find homemade bagels, paninis, quiches, muesli pots, chia puddings, eggs and more. They also have you covered for teas, coffees, hot chocolates or alcoholic beverages if you are ready for a stronger drink.
Honourable breakfast mentions in Munich: Das Maria, Hungriges Herz, Morso, Tagescafe and Mahlefitz
Schönes Wochenende und Guten Apetit!
