Whistle Down the Wind is one of my favourite musicals that receives very little love - it is generally known as an infamous Lloyd Webber flop, but it has a lot to recommend it. It is based on the novel by Mary Hayley Bell about some children who find a man sheltering in their barn and believe him to be Jesus, whilst the adults believe he is an escaped convict. More famous than the book is the 1961 film starring Hayley Mills (Bell's daughter), which is set in Yorkshire rather than the original Bible Belt Louisiana. Fans of the film were surprised by the musical's American setting, as it is much more closely based on the book.
Perhaps most interesting, when listening, is that the hallmark of lyricist Jim Steinman, best known for writing for Meat Loaf and Bonnie Tyler, can also be heard in the music. This song, A Kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste, was covered by Meat Loaf, and features Steinman's trademark soaring vocals and suspended chords that create the dynamism of his typical rock opera style. Collaboration is key to all musicals, and the mix of Lloyd Webber and Steinman gives Whistle Down the Wind a really distinctive sound - still the strong ballads contrasted with lighter numbers that we expect from a Lloyd Webber show, but with Steinman's brand of nostalgic rock opera that is instantly evocative of 1950s America, vital in a work that is so rooted in place. Take a listen - this song requires some plot knowledge, but the original cast recording contains dialogue enough to make the plot clear, if you can handle the slightly dodgy accents!

The Triptych of Terror comes to The Last Comic Book on the Left #comics #comicbooks #graphicnovel
The fevered minds behind The Last Podcast on the Left, Marcus Parks, Henry Zebrowski, and Ben Kissel, have once more joined unholy forces with Z2 Comics for a third tome in the The Last Comic Book on the Left series. Overflowing with stories equally heretic and hilarious, this new anthology has ensnared a new batch of writers and artists to conjure more macabre and profane sequential art inspired…

I don't know if you've answered this question before, but do you have favorite Phantom/Christine pairings?
I have answered it before, but not too recently, so maybe it's time to make a big ole updated masterpost of all my favorites as of now!
Keep in mind that if a name isn't on here, it doesn't mean they're not a favorite or whatever, it might just mean I never saw them with a Phantom or Christine I particularly liked (e.g. Gina Beck is an all-time favorite but she's not on here because I never really saw her opposite a Phantom I also really enjoyed) or I preferred a slightly different pairing (e.g. I really liked Franc D'Ambrosio with Lisa Vroman but I slightly preferred the latter with Brad Little). And there may be one or two where I could not decide at all (e.g. do I prefer Kelly Mathieson with David Thaxton or Josh Piterman? I can't tell!). Anyway, here they are:
Michael Crawford/Sarah Brightman - The OG cast. It can't be helped, they both had such unique takes on the role and it makes them one of the most memorable pairings for me.
Dave Willetts/Jan Hartley Morris - His rougher take on the mold that Crawford left vs. Jan Hartley Morris's old-school, classical Christine is a winner.
Mikael Samuelson/Elisabeth Berg - I love Samuelson's slightly harsher vocals compared to Berg's operatic tones.
Alexander Goebel/Luzia Nistler - Goebel is eerie, ghostly, and unhinged at the end; Nistler has a lovely classical voice and a scared, slightly naive take on her Christine. It fits well.
Davis Gaines/Tracy Shayne - Gaines is commanding, sensual, elegant; Shayne is innocent but with a touch of maturity that brings a certain uniqueness to the role.
Saulo Vasconcelos/Irasema Terrazas - Hands! I think both were allowed a lot of freedom in the role and it's great.
Hans Peter Janssens/Ineke van Klinken - Janssens is both very nuts and very sad while van Klinken is a reserved yet steely-willed Christine who is more than a match for him.
Ian Jon Bourg/Alison Kelly - Bourg is good with so many Christines, but I loved Alison Kelly's feistiness.
Michael Nicholson/Olivia Safe - Just a fascinating pairing, and they were both understudies!
Yoon Young Seok/Hye Kyoung Lee - It didn't matter that both were speaking Korean, they were so emotional that I felt like I understood every aspect of their performance.
Brad Little/Lisa Vroman - Kind of mentioned above, but I love how well these two act together.
Hugh Panaro/Julie Hanson - Hugh Panaro is a sarcastic jokester of a man and it makes you really feel for Julie Hanson's child-like Christine at the end of the show.
Gary Mauer/Elizabeth Southard - A real-life married E/C couple brings all the chemistry!
Earl Carpenter/Rachel Barrell - Barrell is also really good with JOJ, and more spirited around him, but I love Earl Carpenter more.
John Cudia/Jennifer Hope Wills - Oh the sparks these two brought to the role! Cudia was scary and dominating but JHW was absolutely able to hold her own against him.
Simon Pryce/Julie Goodwin - The voices of these two!
Marcus Lovett/Anna O'Byrne - Leroux-accuracy heaven.
Jeremy Stolle/Samantha Hill - Again, I've seen these two give fantastic performances with multiple performers, but I really do love what they bring to the show together.
Tomas Ambt Kofod/Sibylle Glosted - Very detailed, nuanced performances in a production that was full of it.
Jonathan Roxmouth/Meghan Picerno - There was fire between these two! Roxmouth was intent on bending Christine to his will but Picerno was so fiercely independent that you knew he could never succeed.
Jeon Dong Seok/Son Ji-soo - JDS is a swoon-worthy Phantom while SJS brought lovely expressions to the role.
And I'm sure there are many others...

The Director/Hubert (Interliminality) tag: 📺
All of my inserts use any pronouns while i usually default to he/they for them
My Eto Ranger self insert is Cabbage! He's shipped with Kirinda/Lydia. he's a...janitor i suppose? its his job to keep the ship and common area clean. he's super antisocial but enjoys speaking to kirinda while cleaning because it's less stressful than talking face to face with a living person. He falls HARD for that robot and their relationship begins before kirinda gets his physical body back but cabbage certainly enjoys the goofball regardless of form
My One Piece self insert is Karma! He's shipped with Law and sometimes the heart pirates in general as a polyship. Hes the user of the ryu ryu no mi model chameleon. He joined the crew a little after Sabaody after stowing away. He's kind of a menace but hes their menace. hes really bad at his job because he doesn't have the skills to utilize his fruits powers correctly. Law unfortunately sympathizes with them having childhoods that parallel at points. I do not have a self insert that i ship with Deuce. I have delusions about being Ace and we were partners
My GoBB self insert is named Eddie! Theyre an anteater who was made to work with disabled children and theyre shipped with Banban! I hope that doesnt sound weird I was in and out of sped classes as a kid so I wanted to reflect that.
My Kamen Rider self insert is Jules! They're shipped with Kaito and are a member of team baron. They dont really have any lore yet except for hardcore yearning lol. Might make them a rider too?
My Supernatural self insert is Voltaire!!! Hes shipped with Rowena hes a nachzehrer and certified menace. His ass should be dead but free will keep him alive bc hes Rowenas little play thang and keeps her slightly in line. Not by much. His heads so empty only thoughts of his pack and beautiful older women
My Bugsnax self insert is Sunnie Cuteloop theyre a magician! They heart Shelda we love faking magic. Two dif kinds of magic but you know.
My Pokemon self insert is currently unnamed and shipped with Olympia! They're also a magician I swear im not unoriginal I just do magic irl. They're the child of Hocus from the Oblivia region but moved to Kalos to pursue their career. They want to separate from their father and aim to be a better magician than he ever was.
My Invader Zim self insert is Tiere Ley a vortian scientist. They've been with Lard Nar since before the war but didn't officially get together till the Resisty was formed.

Is Marcus Lovett on the to-stream list? I recently found a gif where he’s on his knees during “you try my patience” and that’s not something I’ve seen any other Phantom do.
yep, he was requested last week

We stand Victorious! 27August 2023.
Tumblr media
It was a #longday. But we weren’t the only ones having one of those. On paper I’m guessing Martha’s Vineyard USA to Portsmouth UK was just another booking but I take my hat off to all those involved in the logistics team for pulling it off. DDD to Portsmouth was bad enough!
A great line up at the festival, it was only a shame Ben Howard and The Vaccines were on “another stage”. 😝
The weather was a great British summers day, forecast was overcast all day and 17 degrees, I dressed for all seasons and woken up today with sunburn 🥵.
7 performances to enjoy before The Sons joined us. I won’t go through all the details as it will take the 9 hrs we watched for.
Summary of events:
Courting. Punk indie band great lead singer had the crowd going from the start.
Hard fi. Old skool indie rock band haven’t done a festival in 11 years. Hard Core fans came out.
The Go! Team. Sang songs across their 7 albums. 7 very talent musicians and great energy.
Dylan. hardcore set of young fans, think UK’s answer to Taylor Swift. All the moves and great performance. Dylan came down to do an impromptu meet and greet along the barrier post performance.
Sea Girls. Not what I was expecting but a very pleasant surprise. Oozed stage presence and that rock punk persona. Great skill at balancing on the barrier for 2 songs.
Sigrid. Norways Taylor Swift. Again great energy and her last festival this season. I surprised myself with knowing more of her back catalogue than I thought.
Ellie Goulding. Pop veteran. Such strong vocals and again I knew so many of her songs. Two blasts of the canon guns and everyone was happy.
Showtime:
2120hrs. We did it! OMG how can it be 4 years 2 months since my last Mumford gig. Would I still be able to bounce in all of the right places? Strong opening, Babel, LLM, Roll away. Paparazzi pleasers. The family of Rich, Nick and Dave reunited. Chris on drums, Matt on banjo.
All the feels came straight back, guiding light, below my feet. It felt like they had never been away. Not much banter, “pleased to be home doing a UK show”. “Our makers and friends all over the lineup”
A short Ditmas run down the sides of the alley and barriers. So much energy.
The new stage backdrop showing live action screen footage of the lads is excellent, really grabs you in and the laser light show during snake eyes is something else. Believe had pyros but no ticker tape as Ellie Goulding used the budget allocation. 😉.
It looked and felt like the lads were having a great time, the crowd sure were. Overjoyed to see and hear Delta again. There was much love in the audience for them. The UK have missed them. Just leaves you wanting more! The bounce was joyous.
The journey home. Take the shuttle bus they said, ease all your travel woes they said! On the way into the festival easy peasy, on the way out…. Who could have predicted a RTA in Pompey (Portsmouth) blocking all bus routes… plagiarising a fellow queuers song “we will wait, we will wait in queue”. A most pleasant 2hr wait along the seafront enjoying a stunning moonlit sea, various Isle of Wight ferry crossings, The Beach Club music providing all the vibes, the local chippy had never been so busy at 1.30am!!
Loved it. X

Lottie Mayor, a British stage and screen actress, singer, television presenter and voiceover artist, accompanied by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber on the piano, performs “Whistle Down the Wind” at Webber’s 50th birthday celebration held at the Royal Albert Hall London (1998).
“Whistle Down the Wind” is a powerful and evocative song from the musical of the same name. It has captivated audiences around the world with its emotive lyrics and haunting melody. The song explores themes of hope, faith, and the enduring power of love. Through poignant lyrics and beautiful harmonies, Whistle Down the Wind transcends the boundaries of language and touches the hearts of listeners.  The core meaning of the song revolves around the idea of finding solace and redemption in the face of adversity. It speaks to the belief that even in our darkest moments, there is always a glimmer of hope. “Whistle Down the Wind” reminds us that love and faith can provide us with the strength to overcome challenges and find peace in the midst of chaos.
The musical premièred in 1996 at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C., and a concept album was released in 1998 and has been revived several times since then and toured extensively.  A reworked, and more successful, production opened in the West End at the Aldwych Theatre on 1 July 1998, starring Marcus Lovett as The Man and Lottie Mayor as Swallow. It ran for 1,044 performances and closed in January 2001.
“Whistle down the wind Let your voices carry Drown out all the rain Light a patch of darkness Treacherous and scary
Howl at the stars Whisper when you're sleeping I'll be there to hold you I'll be there to stop The chills and all the weeping Make it clear and strong So the whole night long Every signal that you send Until the very end I will not abandon you My precious friend
So try and stem the tide Then you'll raise a banner Send a flare up in the sky Try to burn a torch And try to build a bonfire Every signal that you send Until the very end, I'm there So whistle down the wind For I have always been right there
Howl at the stars Whisper when you're sleeping I'll be there to hold you I'll be there to stop The chills and all the weeping Make it clear and strong So the whole night long Every signal that you send Until the very end I will not abandon you My precious friend
So whistle down the wind Let your voices carry Drown out all the rain Light a patch of darkness Treacherous and scary Every signal that you send Until the very end, I'm there
So whistle down the wind For I have always been right there.”
