This film depicts the story of a village people who suffered form the turmoil of fighting between the left wing and the right wing about the time of the Korean Conflict (1948-1953) The village people may represent all the Korean people who suffered during the Korean Conflict However, the main theme of this film is not the fight of ideologies, but humanism itself, which Director Im considers one of the most important things in human beings. This film attempts to look into the confused Korean modern history form a bird' eye view In particular nationalist Kim Bum-Woo is an example of the typical Korean intellectuals who suffered in the whirlpool of ideological fighting during that period. This film shows us four different situations. One is the situation of a nationalist (Kim Bum-Woo) The second is the situation of a leftist (Yum Sang-Jin) the third is the situation of a rightist (Yum Sang-Goo), and the fourth is the situation of a girl shaman (So-Hwa). Tumblr media
I finished watching Cheese in the Trap a couple of days ago. First of all, I am so in love with this drama, it’s excellent. It has everything - romance, humor, mistery, great acting, which is the most important, and character diversity. It’s pretty much dynamic, which makes it easy to watch, and not only that but 1st ep is more than enough to make you addicted…
It’s unbelievebly realistic. A lot of characters actually remind me of people I know and people in my life. Do I even have to say that Bo-ra and Eun-taek are amazing friends anyone would die to have.
Tumblr media
I personally have never met people like these two, and honestly I hope with my whole heart that someday I do (god, pls make it soon.)
Tumblr media
Obviously they have a special place in my heart when it comes to this drama, they’re so pure. I am sure all of viewers fell in love with these two ever since ep 1.
Seol is such an amazing character. Strong and independant, she’s a real fighter. I don’t mean she does martial arts, but the way she works so hard to make her life better, the effort she puts into everything she does, makes her a hero of the show.
Tumblr media
She doesn’t have much, but people envy her because of her determination and strong will to finish her studies, because of her great scores (grades), she’s a perfectionist. In all that aditude towards life, she kept her soft side intact, and she’s not the kind of person who would use another to reach her goals.
She’s one of the good ones, a bit of an introvert, but kind, reliable, and so fluffyyyyyy.. I’ve already mentioned how I aways wanted my baby sister to be just like her (if I had a baby sister, but I don’t.)
Two of the most irritating charaters are definitely Son Min-soo and Kim Sang-cheol. They are both Seol’s classmates, but Sang-cheol is her senior who seems like he’s never going to finish his studies. Min-soo is a very shy girl who admires Seol, but eventually ends up cosplaying her lol
I really really really can’t stand those two. And I will ignore Seol's stalker because that guy is so fake to me, I can't even describe it. They put him in the show to literally make the episodes longer...so I won't be talking about him, that whole character is just absurd.
While I’m still at less prefered characters, I have to mention Baek In-ha played by amazing Lee Sung Kyung.
Tumblr media
I don’t care what anybody says, she’s one of my favourites ever since the beginning. She is hilarious!
Tumblr media
Ok, I admit that materialism is not the greatest trait, and neither is neuroticism, but if you seriously think about her, she’s been through hell. Both she and her brother. I cannot judge a person who’s been abused ever since early childhood, and if the worst thing she’s capable to do is max out a credit card, then go for it, idc, money is here to be spent and the man who took these siblings in is filthy rich. Anyways, she’s hilarious, and behind that neurotic facade is a person full of love and despair.
Tumblr media
Plus her fashion sense is to die for!
Ok, and now about Yoo Jung. The weirdo. Definition of an introvert. Son of that guy who took in In-ha and In-ho. The best student at uni. Extremely popular. Handsome. Powerful. Every girl wants to date him. He’s actually an anti-hero. I would dare to mark him as a bad guy. And honestly, I am a sucker for those kind of guys. He would kill for Seol if he could.
Tumblr media
That’s what I love about him. And I have a feeling that’s what Seol loves about him too. What he seeks from his loved ones is devotion, honesty, unconditional love. If murder was legal, he’d do it for those he loves. And boy can he hold a grudge… But when you sum it up, drama makes you see that people were asking for it. Not all the time, but mainly that was the case. They did incredibly stupid things, and he was sick of it. The only thing he did which actually made me dislike him is framing In-ho to get the beatings of his life and a completely crushed hand which was the ultimate punishment for a great piano player like In-ho. That is so cruel I cannot imagine why would anyone who ever loved somebody like a brother do such thing to him. Often I thought he’s actually a psychopath, for his lack of empathy… I don’t know what to think of him… I like him more than I don’t.
Tumblr media
He’s got a lot of characteristics I’m crazy about but a lot of those which I’d run away from right away too.
I know there was a big fuss about the ending… I didn’t mind it personally. Could they make it a bit better? Yes. Definitely. But it wasn’t too bad in my opinion. At least Jung finally opened Seol’s email after passing by her on the street and I have a feeling that’s a new beginning for them. It would be nice to work on that and make a season 2. There’s a webtoon for all those who want more, if I’m not wrong. Comment bellow if you want to add some info about that.
For the end, I’ll say something about my favourite character. Baek In-ho.
Tumblr media
He’s loud. An extrovert. Fighter for justice. Hardworking. Honest. Righteous. Extremely handsome. Has a painful past. But then you find out he’s also an extremely talented pianist. He acts tough but he’s as soft as a marshmallow. He looks like a bad guy but wouldn’t hurt a fly. His emotional intelligence is super high. I understand why Seol never fell for him though. Girls like her never do. It’s like a natural order of things… Well, Seo Kang-joon did a great job playing Baek In-ho. And I am so happy he got a satisfying closure. He diserves it.

Prison Playbook: The unparalleled in its genre
Tumblr media
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Writing this review makes me nervous, to be honest. The drama is so good, and I'm afraid my review won't give justice to how good it is.
The story revolves around Kim Je-hyeok, a baseball superstar who was imprisoned over excessive self-defense. It follows his life inside the prison and how he survives living there.
Tumblr media
The plot alone will tell you that this isn't your regular Korean drama. Like the director's (Shin Won-ho) past works, the most notable is the Reply series, this drama centers more on life and friendship. The representation of characters is realistic. This one doesn't have an eye-candy and extremely wealthy oppa. Or a cutie cheerful female lead or the badass fashionista main character. This one has an average looking-guy named Kim Je-Hyeok (Park Hae Soo), who is mighty in the baseball field but quite dense in other aspects of life. His character is similar to Taek of Reply 1988. Park Hae Soo's performance is admirable. The transition from being calm and simple-minded to temperament is remarkable. The love interest, played by Krystal, whose performance is equally pleasant, is the perfect representation of a college student. No fancy outfits, no good-looking son-of-wealthy family running after her, no prolong unnecessary love triangle. Jung Kyoung-Ho, who played Lee Joon-Ho, best friend of Kim Je-Hyeok, performance was terrific. The chemistry between him and Park Hae Soo as best friends is effective and impressive. Good thing I don't see posts that people are shipping their bromance.
The secondary characters are unique, and each has their own personality, which is evident and consistent throughout the story. They have their own stories that reveal their own depth. Among them, Lee Kyu-Hyung, who played Han-yang, stole the spotlight. He stood out the most with his exceptional acting and good chemistry with the rest of the cast. Kudos to him!
The casts were great, but Lim Hwa-young can do better. Her acting is a bit bland, and she's lagging behind the others. But in all, I couldn't imagine other actors playing their respective characters. They were able to radiate the emotion from the small screen to the viewers.
Some will think that this drama is too heavy and dark. They are not wrong, but they are not right either. Thanks to their unique characterization, comedy comes naturally out of it. I can guarantee that you're going to love the humor, and you can especially look forward to Kyu-Hyung's character. I wouldn't spill so much about it as I don't want to spoil and lose the charm of this drama.
Of course, it's not just all laughs. This drama is a rollercoaster of emotions. You'll laugh, cry, get shocked and mad. Just when you thought everything is fine comes another storm. Every end of the episode will have you at the edge of the seat. I'll bet that you couldn't help but click for the next episode because you couldn't wait for what will happen next. There are lots of heartwarming and tearjerker moments as well without the overly-sugar-coated dialogue. The script is more beautiful because it is realistic, and one can reflect on it. There are also great rare shots in the drama, which are surprising and refreshing.
Overall, Prison Playbook is a sensational drama with a great script, plot, casts, and production. So, do yourself a favor and watch it now!

Sopyonje // 서편제 (1993) Directed by Im Kwon-taek // 이권택
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Based on Lee Chung-joon's novels (Namdo people) and (light of sound) (Sopyonje) was released in 1993 in Seoul and had more than 1 million admissions, creating a "national craze."
This movie is about a family devoted to Pansori (traditional Korean folk music). Yu-bong is every patriotic; he loves his culture and customs more than anything and is tormented by recent events in Korean history, unwilling to abandon the things that have defined Korea throughout the years. He travels with his foster daughter Song-hwa, and Dong-ho. Yu-bong, despite his friend's advice for him to let go of the past and to embrace the future, is determined to pass his knowledge of Pansori on to Song-hwa and Dong-bu, no matter the cost. So together, throughout the times of oppression, and during rapid modernisation and an influx of Japanese and American culture, Yu-bong, pridefully and stubbornly refuses to accept the inevitable change of his country.
Sopyonje is a representative example of director Im Kwon-taek, who has excelled in portraying the unique emotions and depth of life of Korea.

I’ll Go to You When the Weather is Nice ( aka When The Weather is Fine) Final Review
Cast: Park Min Young, Seo Kang Joon, Lee Jae Wook, Moon Jeong Hee, Jin Hee Kyung, Kim Hwan Hee, and Nam Ji-Ae
Year: 2020
Channel: JTBC
Streaming Platform : Rakuten Viki ( all the episodes are free)
Rating: 9.7/10
Trigger Warnings : Intimate Partner Violence, Suicide
Synopsis :
I’ll Go To You When the Weather is Nice is based on the book of the same name and the focus of the show is a fictional community that lives in Bookhyun Village, a small rural community located within Gangwon Province. The protagonist of this show is Mok Hae Won, a cellist, who quits her teaching  job in Seoul and moves back to Bookhyun to live with her aunt. Hae Won is a scarred and broken individual, who has spent much of her life feeling lonely and unloved. She is neglected by her mother, who went to jail for seven years for killing her husband and Hae Won’s father. Her aunt who has taken care of her since she was in high school is cold, distant, and aloof. Additionally, her time in Seoul, was marked by an emotionally abusive boss, who constantly berated her abilities as a cello teacher by claiming that she was not likable enough to teach the students. When Hae Won returns to Bookhyun, she is arguably experiencing one of the lowest points in her life. However, Hae-Won starts to see the light at the end of the tunnel , when she reunites with her former high school classmate, Im Eun Soeb, the owner of “Goodnight Bookstore” . Eun Soeb has also had a crush on Hae Won since they were in high school and is also a man as broken as Hae Won is by the difficult life he has held. What forms the crux is not only whether Hae Won or Eun Soeb will fall in love with each other, but also their own personal healing journeys as they try to overcome past trauma and insecurities. Additionally, the show also focuses extensively on the stories of supporting characters as well, most importantly Hae Won’s aunt and mother, two women who are left to navigate the same pain that Hae Won faces in their own lives.
Review:
This review is probably one of the hottest takes I’ve ever made because so many of the viewers of the show dismissed the show as boring for its slow pace. While I agree that the pace of the show is fairly slow, I would argue that this show is anything but boring, especially when you consider the fact that I managed to binge-watch 16 episodes of this show over a course of a weekend, where I had to prepare for two presentations, turn in a problem set, write a ten page lab report, and work a nine hour shift for my internship.Clearly, this is proof that this drama is so intriguing that the actual work I had to do felt secondary in importance.
Regardless, for those who embrace this drama, this drama invokes the same feeling that you have on a cold winter night, where you are wrapped in a blanket and sipping hot cocoa, while you are watching snowflakes fall to the ground one by one as they cover your entire front yard in snow. This is a drama that unashamedly embraces nostalgia and you see virtually every character in this show getting back together with someone they cared for in high school and there is something oh so satisfying about two grown adults choosing to embrace the love they had for each other when they were teenagers and see them embark on a path to continue that story. Hae Won’s and Eun Soeb’s relationship is so beautiful and heartwarming on so many levels. The way that Eun Soeb fixes the streetlight, so Hae Won can safely go back to her home,or even how Hae Won along with Eun Soeb’s mother, is the only person in the  whole town who seem to be genuinely concerned about Eun Soeb venturing out into the mountain alone. These two truly embrace fluff, but the way they do so is eloquent and cute all at the same time. Their hugs and kisses convey so much meaning in every scene. Park Min Young and Seo Kang Joon have earth shattering chemistry with each other in this series and for the love between their characters to be truly felt, you don’t feel the need to define their relationship as husband and wife or boyfriend and girlfriend. These two love for simply the sake of loving.
Underlying these layers of romance and unrequited love is also a telling story about the journey of three women ( Hae Won, her mother, and her aunt) nursing the wounds of toxic masculinity. A major focus of the show is Intimate Partner Violence and how complex the feelings of victims can be. Once, I volunteered at a domestic violence shelter, where one of the volunteers told me that abusive partners can also be the most loving and that many victims struggle to reconcile their love for their partner with the clear endangerment this person has on their very ability to live. We see Hae Won’s mother and her aunt reconcile these feelings of extreme guilt over the accidental murder of Hae Won’s father with the abuse that they have faced. The two trying to move on from a complicated and traumatic past is one of the most profound narratives that this show has chosen to focus on. The only place where this drama falters is how Hae Won confronts this issue as it is not entirely made clear by the writers whether she was aware of what was happening in her family, or if she truly was oblivious to everything because both her mother and aunt have chosen to be be distant to her.
If it isn’t already obvious, there are a lot of deep conversations that the characters are having in this drama and there is a sense of melancholy that permeates this drama,  but Im Hui and Lee Jang Wu, Eun Soeb’s sister and best friend respectively bring so much light heartedness and humor to this drama. Lee Jae Wook, who plays Lee Jang Wu, is an actor I’ve been closely following for a long time since his days on Extraordinary You, and he shines as an adorable quirky civil servant, who finds joy in living ordinarily despite going to Seoul National University (Korea’s Harvard).  Seeing his relationship with Eun Sil always left me with a stupid smile on my face. I’ll Go To You When the Weather is Nice is not a perfect drama maybe because it is too stuck in the past of these characters that some conflicts seem to be rooted in petty high school drama , but it’s still a drama that is beautiful even despite its cracks. If the entire drama can be summed up in one phrase, I would use the following quote uttered by Cha Yun Taek in the show, “ [Love] It’s when my cold hand touched your cold hand and we both become warm”. This drama in essence is about finding the warmth in our lives.
