Flowers are often used as a metaphor for the female characters in the Apothecary Diaries. And for the first time, we, the viewer, are given the direct comparison to which flower is meant to represent Maomao: wood sorrel (also known as “cat’s foot”).
Tumblr media
It’s a flower that can treat poisons. A flower that is used to enhance the beauty of the courtesans by painting their nails. A flower with a name associated with cats. A flower that, in hanakotoba, represents maternal tenderness. It’s also one of the flowers that Lakan specifically associates with Fengxian, and by extension, Maomao herself.
In the first opening—aptly titled, “Be A Flower”—the wood sorrel is the only flower that gets special attention. The other flowers are shown together with other varieties, but only the wood sorrel is shown by itself, and more than once.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see it again in the second opening, with an infant being held by a parent, while flitting between images of Lakan and Fengxian’s backstory.
Tumblr media
It’s such a simple flower, too. Small, unassuming, but full of diverse uses and qualities, be they medicinal or ordinary. A very fitting flower for Maomao, and what she brings to the story.

Please do not read this if you haven't read the manga/light novel, spoilers:
Considering how reluctant Maomao is about everything linked to court drama, there is something really really funny about thinking the apothecary diaries might be the backstory to how she became an empress.

summary: the kind of gift(s) you receive from your special someone at Ensemble Square! tags: established relationship, fluff, slightly suggestive at some points, gn!reader - you/your pronouns characters: the main cast, teachers, and anzu! a/n: I wanted to post something for Valentines, so here's a little headcanon sort of thing! If a character's name is in bold+italics that means I just think that's something they'd definitely do. I see other people do it with these types of post so why not :)
Something to Eat
(Purchased) Chocolates
It’s a classic, right? You’re their valentine, so you’re definitely getting Valentine's Day chocolate - there will be no objections! It’s something they picked out with your tastes in mind, even if you’re not the biggest sweets fan, they want to participate in the holiday festivities with you!
Aira | Chiaki | Eichi | HiMERU | Hinata | Hiyori | Hokuto | Izumi | Jin | Kaoru | Kohaku | Mao | Midori | Ritsu | Shinobu | Sora | Tori | Tsukasa
Something Homemade
Chocolate, cookies, maybe even a cake… or are sweets not your thing? No matter what your tastes are, they wanted to make you something with their own hands! While it might not be as tasty as something bought at the store, they wanted you to taste all the love and effort they wanted to put into this little gift for you!
Adonis | Anzu | Hajime | Hinata | Kuro | Madara | Mika | Natsume | Niki | Shu | Tomoya
Something to Wear
Purchased Jewelry/Clothing
It had caught their eye in the store window one day… and that night, they just couldn’t get it out of their mind. The way the piece would compliment your skin… it was meant to be yours. So they purchased it, made sure to wrap the box with care, so that you knew exactly how much thought went into this gift. The price doesn’t matter - you’re worth whatever it cost, and then some.
Akiomi | Arashi | Eichi | Hiiro | HiMERU | Hiyori | Izumi | Kaoru | Keito | Makoto | Mao | Tetora | Tori | Tsukasa | Yuzuru
Handmade Jewelry/Clothes
It could be a little Kandi Bracelet with beads that match your favorite colors, a knit hat to keep you warm for the rest of the winter, or maybe even an ornate pendant with a tumbled stone picked to specifically match your eyes. No matter what, it was made both with love and you specifically in mind. The joy of gift giving comes from the idea that you’ve gotten a piece of art that exists for no one but you - a little sign of just what you make them feel.
Anzu | Arashi | Hajime | Hokuto | Kuro | Mika | Nazuna | Rinne | Shu | Tomoya | Tsumugi
A Charm
Maybe it’s a bit cheesy, but this isn’t an unexpected gift. You had gotten the initial charm bracelet from them early on in your relationship - each new addition for a milestone or special memory that the two of you have shared. It doesn’t matter if you wear it… the bracelet is like a little memorial to your relationship, a timeline of how the two of you have intertwined together.
Aira | Anzu | Arashi | Hiiro | Hinata | Kanata | Keito | Mayoi | Midori | Natsume | Nazuna | Ritsu | Subaru | Tomoya | Yuzuru
A Piece from Their Own Closet
Is this a lazy, last minutes gift? Oh no, it’s anything but. There’s a sort of satisfaction from seeing you wear something that belonged to them. Maybe they’re a tad possessive, maybe they want you to know that you’re as much a part of their life that they view their own belongings as yours… All they know is that when they see that piece on you, it makes their heart beat a bit faster.
Adonis | Chiaki | Hajime | Hiiro | Izumi | Jin | Jun | Kaoru | Koga | Kuro | Madara | Mao | Mayoi | Mitsuru | Natsume | Rinne | Tetora | Yuta
A Plushie
Purchased
You can’t deny how cute it is… Whenever you’re feeling lonely, be sure to snuggle with your new friend - and imagine your beloved is there with you! Either one of your favorite animals, their pet name for you, or maybe one of your favorite fictional characters… I mean, who wouldn’t love a nui of their oshi, after all?
Akiomi | Aira | Kanata | Leo | Midori | Nazuna | Ritsu | Shinobu | Souma | Tori | Yuta
Won from a Crane Game
It may not be as perfectly tailored to you as something they went out to buy, but… they worked really hard to get you this gift! Taking you out to the arcade, proudly announcing that they won’t stop until that plush is in your arms, where it belongs… plus, you get the fun memory of your little arcade date as a bonus!
Anzu | Chiaki | Hiiro | Hinata | Jun | Kohaku | Makoto | Mitsuru | Natsume | Shinobu | Shu | Sora | Subaru | Tetora
Handmade
Even if it won't be the same quality as the commercial stuff, it's just as sweet! They even included a little embroidery with your initials, so that there's no mistaking that this plush is yours. Every stitch was filled with the love they feel for you - resulting in a plushie that there will never be another one of.
Hajime | Kuro | Mayoi | Mika | Rinne | Shu | Sora | Tori | Tsumugi
An Experience
A Shopping Trip
Giving a gift can be hard… and they’re the type who wants to give you something you’ll 100% want and use… so- they’re taking you out! Maybe it’s to buy an outfit that you get to pick out, or just a whole date where they’re spoiling you with everything you wind up being interested in… either way, they’re going out with you to buy you your gift this year.
Akiomi | Arashi | Chiaki | Eichi | HiMERU | Hiyori | Ibara | Izumi | Keito | Makoto | Mao | Mika | Mitsuru | Nagisa | Rei | Tori | Tsukasa
A Special Dinner
The way to someone’s heart is through their stomach… but why stop at chocolates? Either at your favorite restaurant, the most exclusive place in town, or a personal and private home cooked meal between the two of you… They’re the type who wants to give you something special, a memory to look back on even after Valentine’s Day is over, and maybe the start of a tradition for the two of you.
Adonis | Akiomi | Eichi | Hiyori | Ibara | Izumi | Kaoru | Keito | Leo | Nagisa | Niki | Tatsumi | Tsukasa | Wataru | Yuzuru
A Couple's Class
You're going to try something new together! It could be learning to cook a brand-new dish together, making some sort of pottery, or maybe painting something. Not only do the two of you get to experience something special, but you get to take something with you to remember the special day by.
Anzu | Keito | Kohaku | Madara | Makoto | Mao | Mika | Mitsuru | Nagisa | Natsume | Rei | Rinne | Shu | Sora | Subaru | Tatsumi | Tomoya | Tsumugi | Yuzuru
A Trip to Somewhere Special
From the Art Gallery to the Amusement Park, you're going to be going on a special date at a place that the two of you will love. Looking at jellyfish at the Aquarium, attending the symphony, petting bunnies at the Zoo's petting zoo, or checking out the brand new archeological exhibit at the Museum… no matter what it is, it’s something to make your eyes light up and so they can see that perfect smile of yours.

THE STEAMBIRD || 11/8/23 - 11/18/23
Xiangling goes to Fontaine. She comes back, but she comes back with deep fried Romaritime Flowers. Xinyan eats one. Probably dies. She then tries to get Yanfei to eat one. Yanfei is hesitant.
STORIES UNDER CUT !
REVERED WANMIN CHEF - DEEP FRIED FONTAINIAN MENU?
Xiangling Mao, the daughter in the father-daughter duo of cooks for the Wanmin Restaurant.
Miss Mao, upon returning from a trip to Fontaine, returned with new ingredients, and was ready to experiment with new flavors!
The young chef, upon returning to her homeland of Liyue, went back to the kitchen and immediately deep fried the ingredients she had at hand. Being a bushel of Romaritime Flowers.
Xiangling, upon finishing her most recent masterpiece, rock and roll star, Xinyan, while passing by, offers to try the new dish. Xinyan pops it into her mouth whole, and her face begins to turn a bright red, with steam pouring out of her ears.
Yanfei, popular Liyuean legal advisor, having been watching the whole ordeal, gapes at Xiangling, asking if their friend is okay. Xiangling simply shrugs it off with a smile, saying that Xinyan is naturally fine since Miss Mao only used a few shakes of Jueyun Chili spice rather than a full bottle.
Yanfei then hesitantly picks up a deep fried flower and considers eating it.
Xinyan, with garbled speech (assuming she may have burnt her tongue eating the deep fried Romaritime Flower), encourages Yanfei to eat it. This only further discourages the legal advisor from eating the deep fried flower.
Outrider Amber, a member of the Knights of Favonius in Mondstadt, perhaps by coincidentally being in Liyue, pops in. Seeing the threatening figure of the deep fried Romaritime Flower, plainly tells Yanfei not to eat it. Yanfei, however, is beginning to be tempted by perhaps the crispy texture and savory aroma wafting from the deep fried flower.
The outrider, not exactly phased, simply shrugs and tells the legal advisor it’s her choice. Xiangling presses Yanfei, looking her deep in the eyes, saying she knows that Yanfei wants to eat it.
Munch it.
Crunch it.
Consume it.
Savor it.
Swallow it.
Yanfei has second thoughts again soon after. She desperately wants to eat the Romaritime Flower, but upon seeing the raggled figure of her friend, Xinyan, sprawled out on the floor, practically burnt, she is concerned for what would happen if she ate it.
Xinyan emerges, speaking up that she’s fine. Xiangling, with a serious look in her eyes, nods at Yanfei, saying she knew Xinyan was strong.
The Mondstadtian Outrider looks at Xiangling, perhaps a tad bit concerned for how Yanfei will fare after eating the deep fried flower. Amber concernedly peers at the trio, saying that perhaps maybe the rock and roll star will be able to endure, but how about the legal advisor?
Xiangling looks the golden eyed outrider, a serious look in the chef’s own wide amber eyes. With a sincere expression on the chef’s face, she uttered one statement, gripping the outrider’s shoulders.
“Granny aint raise no weak bitches. Yanfei can handle it”
The granny in question, being Streetward Rambler, or more commonly known as Madame Ping.
Madame Ping, perhaps also coincidentally passing by Wanmin Restaurant, encourages Xiangling, telling Yanfei to not only eat the deep fried flower, but to also do a backflip eating it.
Yanfei is intimidated. Very intimidated. Under pressure, she blurts out that she admittedly does not know how to do a backflip.
Amber tells the legal advisor to perhaps ask Xiangling to teach her, but Yanfei backs away, saying that Xiangling is even scarier of a teacher than Xingqiu.
BONUS: EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH CHEF MAO HERE
Sayu tries to figure out the secret to being tall. Various peoples offer their input.
SHUUMATSHUBAN NINJA TRIES TO UNCOVER THE SECRET TO BEING TALL?
Young Shuumatshuban Ninja- Sayu- longs for one thing.
Height.
The young ninja, at a loss for how to grow taller, resorted to a final method. Releasing a poll on her blog.
Luckily for the Shuumatshuban member, people all across Teyvat answered the call.
Madame Faruzan, elder for the Akedemiya Darshan of Haravatat, had.. quite the input. She simply and blatantly told the young ninja that there is no way to advance in height besides nature's course. If it were the opposite, Faruzan admits that she would make herself grow taller to spit on “Hat Bastard”(Hat Guy of the Darshan of Vahumana,) from above.
Hat Guy scoffs, saying that Faruzan definitely thinks about him 24/7. Madame Faruzan is appalled. Upset. Frustrated. Mad. Angry.
Sayu thinks the two are flirting.
Takuya, newest member of the Arataki Gang, tries to genuinely give- how the boss of the Arataki Gang(Arataki “Numero Uno” Itto) has dubbed her- the “tanuki” tips. Sayu says she will take them into account.
Doctor Baizhu, of the Bubu Pharmacy, gives tips to Sayu also, telling her to visit the Pharmacy’s resident zombie- Qiqi- a visit. To play together, of course.
An odd bard by the name of Venti, quite notably an Anemo vision wielder, tells the girl that he, Venti, lets the wind decide his height. Naturally she is confused, calling him a “poetic bastard.”
Perhaps she learned this style of language from Madame Faruzan?
The alleged twin of the bard says it’s in the genetics. Odd. Hm! Perhaps this is another situation like Il Dottore and his segments? Maybe a secret prototype? Oh well! Stay tuned to the Steambird to find out!
Webttore blew up a microwave trying to microwave milk.
PEEK INTO HARBINGER LIFE - FATUI MICROWAVE FLARE-UP
The Fatui, despite occasionally being written up as an evil organization, does itself have its own silly shenanigans.
One of this week’s shenanigans being how one of the Dottore segments/clones blows up a microwave.
Because of course it was the Dottore segment! Truly the ambassadors of chaos.
Webttore, one of the segments in question, was the culprit. He had been trying to microwave milk. Which was reasonable on its own. Except the segment ended up microwaving the milk for approximately 420 seconds.
7 MINUTES.
Half of the milk evaporates.
The Fatui then get a new microwave. But Webttore then destroys it again

ok wild question but im oh so curious on who do you think would keep short hair when in femstars i feel like long haired shu is the most befitting of her character (and desperately wished og shu also had long hair bc like. dude is missing out. we know what you are, itsuki!) but with certain characters i feel like still having semi short hair if not outright their originals would fit them (ilke eichi for example i can imagine only having slightly longer hair or keeping her hair the same as her og counterpart)
idk i'm just so curious to hear others thoughts :]
HMMM..... TBH I LIKE ENVISIONING MANY OF THEM WITH SHORT HAIR! ill go in order of unit;
eichi and yuzuru are two characters i like to picture with short hair! shoulder-length for eichi would be cute, and yuzuru keeping that hairstyle would look beautiful i think !!
i think maos hair would remain the same, and maybe subaru would have Relatively short hair, although i think itd be a little longer than canon at the very least
chiaki has a messy short bob that she puts into a ponytail! and kanata keeps her canonical hair due to her backstory. i can see tetora rocking short hair aswell, but im a bit torn bc i can ALSO see her growing it out so HMMM.....
ive alr talked abt alkaloid but tldr; hiiro and tatsumis hair lean short
everyone in eden keeps their canon hairstyle! butch lesbians (and hiyori) unit!
mika has two short pigtails!!
the twins have roughly the same hair length (maybe a tad longer) but hinata has pigtails and yuuta has her new canonical hairstyle
everyone in crazy:b has the same hair length as canon, except rinnes is slightly longer and kohaku has two pigtails ontop of her original hair
rei and kaoru have their canonical lengths, koga has whatever the fuck u call this
Tumblr media
nazuna keeps her canon length!
keito has a really short bob (like down to her chin, maybe a little longer) and kuro keeps her canon hair but with a sort of mullet situation going
leo has the same hair! (aswell as arashi do not FUCKING change arashis appearance i SWEAR TO GOD DO NOT UFCKING CHANGEH T
you know my switch hcs.

Chapter 6 | Grasslands Pt. 2
After that, Maomao’s journey was peaceful (I’m not shitting you, that’s how the chapter starts xD)
We then get a bit of inner monologue about how she expected more insects.. however, Narrator-Mao explains that since it’s all grassland, there are quite a few - however, not in large numbers, at most she saw some jumping around from time to time.
She wonders if the fear was unfounded but more rationally speaking she’s relieved that there’s no locust damage in Saito(?).
By the time they arrive at the next resting place, they caught up with Lahan’s brother who’d been sent ahead. As he listens to what they just went through he goes pale, saying something along the lines of “Eh, is that true?” which Maomao, in her thoughts, sees overall as a normal reaction.
Narrator-Mao thinks back on how Chue reacted to the attack, realizing that her reaction was like she’s used to it or it’s at least in the “expected” range.
The party that had started the travel earlier consisted of one wagon, Lahan’s brother, two miliary officers - who looked like bodyguards -, three farmers - who seemed to be helpers - and two local guides.
Maomao doesn’t know how many people would be appropriate for her but she feels like two (Basen and Chue) are a lot. She then wonders if the original plan had been for one person not to be there - then remembers that she forgot to mention that they had no guide.
After the second break, it wasn’t long before they reached the village. There are houses centered around a flowing river and fields as well as trees can be seen around them. Unlike the mountains Maomao knows, the ones she spots here looks more like a raised grassland hills. (our girl and her sizes)
She wonders if the white dots she sees are sheep and that “the black thing could be a cow”. Based on the number of houses her guess is that the population is probably, at most, 300 people strong.
Like guessed by her, as they approach they’re greeted by sheep. Some are fluffy, while others aren’t after being sheared - they’re probably right in the middle of shearing season.
Even the kids appear to be hard workers, picking up sheep droppings and putting them in baskets - Basen(?) asks what that’s about and Maomao explains that it’s said to be used as fuel and is allegedly also good for spreading on the floor to keep it warm. Understandably Basen gives her a strange look, so instead of being silent she feels like adding a tad more.
Maomao then says shit(?) and Chue doesn’t miss a beat and just deadass goes “Huh, don’t you know? He’s my brother in law.” - Narrator-Mao takes note that Chue never seems to forget to provoke Basen and that her default standard when provoking him seems to be calling him “brother in law” as she does so.
The village is surrounded by a moat and a brick wall, judging by where the bandits appeared from they must come here from time to time.
Basen is then talking to someone at the entrance of the village, their messenger already seems to have arrived so they’re let in easily.
Apparently Chue called for one of their two guides - she’s smiling for some reason and Narrator-mao says that the guide is going increasingly pale.
A disturbing atmosphere can be felt around them. Behind Chue is one of the guards from the group that started travelling earlier. Chue keeps smiling and while the guide is calm, however you looked at it it seemed like she’d be lead away - Maomao then thinks “I see~”
She folds her arms as she keeps her eyes on where the guide will take Chue and Lahan’s brother is like “Hey, what was that?”. Maomao says that they probably want to haggle because they asked for a safe route yet the bandits were there.
Lahan-nii is like “Ah, but isn’t that just an excuse?”, Maomao says that it may be seen as a bit of an insult - but it seems like they’d paid extra for the route that they were specially taught about because it’s “so safe”. Lahan-nii says something along the lines of “You’re lying, right? I mean, the “roads” are nothing but grass, if you get deceived, you’re the fool.”
Narrator-Mao thinks that sure it’s bullshit, she’s just talking away anyway and as she does she hears footsteps approaching.
It’s Basen, who’s come to tell her that he heard the village chief will show her where to stay. Maomao’s like “Got it”, Lahan-nii says thank you and Narrator-Mao notes that while he’s treated roughly, he’s polite. He is the oldest son of a good family, so he probably has good manners.
Basen then looks at Lahan-nii and is like “Eh, right- By the way-..” pauses, then says “What should I call you?” Narrator-Mao’s like “even Basen doesn’t know his name” and Lahan-nii is like “Oh!”.
Lahan-nii is already all excited, but before he can get a word out Maomao goes “Lahan-nii’s fine”. She doesn’t miss a beat.
The poor guy goes “Hey!” while tapping Maomao’s shoulder with the back of his hand.
Basen basically says “Okay, Lahan-nii’s fine.” and Lahan’s brother yells “Hey, there?!” at Basen, completely forgetting his manners.
Maomao goes “Yes, he literally is Lahan’s older brother. I’m sure you know about Lakan, but his quirk isn’t so strong, he’s just a normal person so there’s no harm in him. As a potato farmer he’s an expert, so I’m leaving that to him.”
The brother then goes “Who’s normal! Who’s a farmer!” and Narrator-Mao thinks that if he’s not a farmer, then what is he? She wishes he could be a bit more proud of himself, given how much he was helping out with the giant potato field.
Basen then kinda backpaddles and goes “I understand. Since you’re a relative of Lakan-sama, you must be treated with respect.”
Maomao thinks that that’s a good point or that she likes that part - meanwhile her more honest narrator self is like “Well, all I can say is that the way he treats me is rather sloppy.”
The poor village chief then comes in with a shy “Uhm..”. He inquires if he can show Maomao around and she apologizes and says “please”. He looks relieved when they make their way to the village center.
He then tells her to use a specific house, which is a mobile tent as you’d expect to see from pastrolists. The chief goes about explaining that the tent was from people that used to live in the village a few years ago, but it’s still in use and heated. For women, the smaller tent beside it should be used.
When Maomao looks inside, it really is warm. The frame is built like a net and covered in wool felt. Inside there’s a carpet with a fireplace in the middle. There are no windows and the air seems a bit bad, but she notices a cylindrical pillar above the fireplace that seems to be used to let out the air. She also wonders if what’s piled beside the fireplace is the sheep dung that the kids were collecting earlier.
The carpet is carefully woven and showy - you can tell that even in rural areas they care about their guests.
The village chief then quietly says that he/they were saved just before the tent collapsed at one point - Maomao thinks that he must be talking about Rikuson. We then have Narrator-Mao wonder just what on earth Rikuson was up to, because he must have arrived only days prior.
She also tells us that the village chief with his dark/tan skin looks like an old man, but he’s sturdy on his feet. She’s not sure if it’s due to the heavy amount of sunlight that they age more or if, despite having settled down, since they’re wandering folk they may just have strong legs.
The man then says that it’s already late today, so he’ll go eat and rest if it's alright and that he’ll have a guard posted in front of the tent - Maomao says it is and then grabs her luggage before heading for the smaller tent.
When she takes of her shoes, she’s surprised at how soft the floor is - it seems that there are many layers of woolen blankets under the carpet. After taking off her fancy cloak, she ends up just laying down on the ground, sprawled out.
She then thinks “Ah, no..” - due to how warm it is in the tent and on the floor she almost dozed off.. but she jumps up and slaps her cheek (and here she goes judging her mans).
The next time she wakes up, Chue has just returned. She’s like “Well, Maomao-san, you seem to be feeling well.”, then narrows her eyes and also collapses onto the ground to roll around.
Maomao then ends up asking if she can check in with Chue for a second - she then goes over everything she was curious about in her mind to sum it up and somehow as she sorts her mindmaze she sits up straight, Chue follows, they end up sitting straight-backed facing one another.
Chue asks “Yes, yes, what is it Maomao-san?” as she usually does. Maomao accuses her of having been the one to incite the bandits, Chue’s expression doesn’t change at all as she asks what Maomao means by that.
Maomao admits that her phrasing was bad, so she restarts with saying that in other words bandits were assumed to be a problem. To lessen the actual damage, they were led to them, who were late arrivals - still, Chue’s expression doesn’t change at all.
Chue then asks something along the lines of what basis she has for that thought. This doesn’t seem like an attempt to annoy or embarrass Maomao, but Chue clearly enjoys listening to the answer.
Maomao goes about explaining that first of all, why were they split into an early starter group and a late starting one? Maybe they were thinking about her and wanted her travel to be as short as possible - which she can see based on the preparations they made.
However, even if they started at different times.. she thinks it’s unnatural that they had no guide with them, even though they had two hired.
Chue’s like “Huh?” and Narrator-Mao notes that while she’s good at looking at maps, if you’re visiting a new area it’s always better to have someone to guide you. The next part, I think, is her stating as narrator that someone, likely Basen, also seemed reluctant to take her with them (Not sure if her is referring to Chue or Maomao).
Second, she says, the cloak. Chue’s like “Didn’t you like it?” and Maomao’s like “It’s very warm and useful, but the one thing that caught my attention is how gorgeous it was.” Chue tries to play dense by going “What about gorgeous?” and Maomao looks at the cloak Chue was wearing.
She points out that Chue loves flashy things, so she thought if Chue had two, she’d pick the flashier one.. but she chose the plainer option. Chue takes on a playful tone as she says that sure, but she at least understands basic manners(?).
Maomao, however, argues that sure, but if she were to give Maomao something better - she thinks it would be the one given to her by the moon prince (the one gaoshun put on her ages ago where jinshi got jealous of him). She’s talked so much about the comfortable saddle that Maomao just expected it’s the same cloak, but it’s not, isn’t it?
Narrator-Mao specifies that the cloak she got felt really nice and the embroidery showed it was a fine piece of cloak.
She goes on to say that wearing something so pretty makes you like an advertisement for the fact that you’re a sitting duck ready for being hunted. That’s why Chue’s cloak is simple, because that way she’d come across as the maid of the lady.
Chue then starts chuckling, saying that from the beginning her position was that of Maomaos maid - to get them to attack Maomao she gave her a pretty cloak on purpose and put her in the later starting group for the same reason as well “Is that what you’re trying to say?”
But Maomao backpaddles enough to leave Chue blinking. “Instead of letting them aim for me, in my opinion, you allowed them to concentrate on one target to minimize the actual damage.”
She also says that, if they were to target the group in full, while their numbers would be larger, there were many more people involved that aren’t used to handling thieves - like herself, who would’ve likely gotten kidnapped for trying to pull a trick related to her work, or getting distracted by it.
The average looking Lahan-nii seems to be in good health - but he doesn’t seem like he’s used to fighting. He’d probably go timid/freeze like most people.
Maomao goes on with “If you split into two groups and let them believe the one with the least people has more money, they’ll aim for that. Two women and one man. Sure, Basen is a real monster, when it comes to his skills/strength, but he has a baby face and isn’t so tall for a military officer.”
Even thieves wouldn't expect that underneath the lid they opened they’d find a bear wearing human skin.
Chue then tries to argue that if Maomao’s hypothesis was correct, how would she lure out the thieves? However nice of a cloak Maomao was wearing, it seemed like they were ambushed - is that what’s coming next?
And Maomao’s like “That’s why you were talking with one of the guides earlier. Third: You only talked about the village with one guide.”
Maomao remembers the pale-faced guide.
Next she says that before the first team left, Chue must’ve talked with the two guides about different things. She showed one where the second team would use the waterhole. So the guide(?) could tell the bandits where to wait/take a break.. while simply pretending to check his map for their own resting place.
Narrator-Mao fills us in that she’s not sure how the guide communicated with the thieves, but that there must be a number of ways to do it.
Maomao adds that - yeah, from the beginning they hired a suspicious person who seemed to be connected to the thieves to act as a guide. Chue told everyone where to rest, confirmed where they would attack. That way, it was clear who was black or white, even though at times both guides were black. (sus is black, safe is white)
Chue doesn’t deny Maomao’s claims, instead she just says that it’s only one of the guides - the others identity is cleared.
Maomao then wonders if that’s Jinshis doing(?) aloud. Sure, she’d told him that if he uses her, he should do it properly - so it’s not like she hadn’t kinda expected stuff like this.
However, Chue argues that that’s not the case, it was her who prepared it all (esp the cloak) and Maomao’s like “Really?” and then as narrator adds that it must be unrelated then or that it’s a different story then.
Chue says that since Maomao’s smart, she’s in trouble now and Maomao replies with “I don’t know what you’re thinking, so I’m in trouble too” - they then both sigh.
Chue goes on to say that she has two requests, Maomao's like “What is it?”.
Number one is that “Chue is still cheerful, fun-loving” Chue and to please keep treating her as before - she pulls out the flags again.
Maomao honestly replies that she doesn't quite get it, but sure - then takes the flag, dangling it from her fingertips while wondering what to do with it.
But Chue reminds, she has one more request and asks if she can ask Maomao a question. Maomao's like “What is it?”...
Well, why didn't she think/believe that the cloak was a gift from Jinshi - it sounds like Chue's earnestly doubtful.
Maomao argues that, if Jinshi were to give her a gift, she thinks that it would be something appropriate. Sure, comfortable but also practical with less details.
Chue’s like “Is that what it was/is?” - Maomao says something along the lines of that it starts to look like it.
Narrator-Mao notes that Chue looks at her with an indescribable expression, but then she suddenly looks up.
From outside the tent they hear a woman apologize (the japanese phrase when they are trying to get into a place that's already being occupied) and Maomao's like “Please come in.” with the same return phrase. The blanket that serves as entrance then moves.
A middle-aged woman comes/looks inside, she apologizes again, holding reins in her hand. She then says that, as told, she prepared three goats and asks what she's to do with them now.
Chue thanks her, then says “Here's your payment”, luring her to grab the cash - Narrator-Mao thinks she must've asked for that before coming to the tent.
In her head Maomao wonders if Chue plans to take the goats with them but as narrator goes on that if you want to eat them, it's cheaper to turn them into meat - also there wouldn't be any need for three.
Chue holds onto the reins of the goats while fishing something out of her luggage, Maomao questions what's going on and Chue's like “It’s salt. Since there's no ocean/sea around here, salt is precious. Even goats love salt.” and Maomao's like “So, what are you gonna do?” because she honestly can't figure out Chue's intentions.
Chue laugh's.
“We'll negotiate. I'm a pacifist, so I'm trying to solve this peacefully. Maomao, please rest your tired body.”
Chue turns her back on Maomao, takes the goats and leaves.
| Notes | Chapter 7 is up | Masterlist
- The farm arc goes on past this - but grasslands ends here.
This was definitely a wild ride, to translate as well - no pun intended. The gist is that Chue used Maomao to lure out bandits by hiring a sus guide and a cleared guide.
I found nothing to indicate if Basen was part of the plot, or not - but I think that the line about him not wanting to have someone around might've been about Chue. Jinshi, allegedly, had no part in this at all.
If you'd like to get notified when new chapters drop, I'm open to sending dm's or tagging - just let me know!

knock knock. i bring mao thoughts
imagine sitting on mao's lap while doing whatever work or study you have to do. except the way your ass rubs against him makes him increasingly horny each passing second, and grinding against you isn't enough anymore.
eventually he whines like a puppy, "just the tip," he begs. fine, just the tip. after all, you still have something to finish first! but then he got a tad bit too excited, "accidentally" slipping in completely. even though he mutters an apology, he shifts the blame to you - it's because your hole is so warm and slippery... definitely has nothing to do with his precum coating it

answering this months late dont mind me
always a sucker for mao just letting go of common sense and just letting his instincts take over <3 let him be a bit selfish and horny

🌟⭐🌟 would love to hear more about any chapters you wanna share more about!! I love your chapters spent delving into the fade and into memories of Mao's past...
aaaAaaaa!! Can I just say every time I see your name it makes me so happy!!
I'll try and offer some thoughts below the cut ~
I thought I had a problem with abusing the Fade to drive parts of the story, but I am extremely relieved that that doesn't seem to be a problem! I suppose in my defense, with Mao and Solas being Pre-Veil denizens, Fade stuff is unavoidable lol. I think flashbacks in the Fade are my favourite thing to write because of just how easily it can toss the plot on its head. The Fade is alive in my version of DA and the possibilities are endless!
I think it's actually impossible for me to talk on any specific published chapter because I get carried away too easily and it is a tad overwhelming due to the story's length, so...perhaps instead a little about what's coming? The supply of Fade-diving and flashbacks in the future have yet to run dry bahaha.
Most recently I wrote something that I should keep quiet about but I'm dying to share! As vague as I be, I wasn't expecting to go into was the ancient history of Enso in the main story. I had always planned to write it as a separate entry so I could spend more time with plot-irrelevant details (I still might). There was also this little part of me that wanted to keep Maordrid's beginning vague (as in, I haven't stated whether she was Fade-born or Elven-born and I never will reveal that, I want people to draw their own conclusions), and there was also deciding whether to give Enso more of a form or leave the horrors up to the reader's imagination.
Despite all of that hemming and hawing, it became necessary to explore Enso with Maordrid's impending 'curse' (and then some), so…it found its way into the story and I'm SUPER excited about who is involved in it and what it means for her. Like, even with the wild origin that is emerging for her, she still remains tiny - neither a hero nor a villain, nor someone who has really left any real mark in history. Everyone else flows around her like this river of change and she sort of gets buffeted around, sometimes she is carried into the darker currents, loses her way, and so on.
That's not the only thing of course! I've honestly just been excited about the story since Chapter 111/Falon'Din's Shadow because I feel like that's where Maordrid's character really began emerging (it only took 110 chapters lol)...and all the following character interactions as well. At least for me it has been so much fun to write.
I've neglected to mention the others here, like Dhrui & Asmodei, or even Dhrui and upcoming Abelas, Yin, or any of characters with lesser roles...but they all make me very excited! I just know myself 😂if I try to talk about any of them this will end up being over a thousand words sjkfhfjk
So yea a lot of rambling! If there's anything you'd like to know more about specifically, feel free to ask more questions!! I love to interact with my readers 💚
Thank you so much for dropping in my friend!

Ugh Someone give me a Kai Rei where:
:readmore:
Everyone knows they like each other. It’s so obvious. But they’re both oblivious idiots. Who think they’re so smooth and they have things under wraps and no one knows they have a thing for the other.
And the Bladebreakers, White Tigers and Borg are all SO tired of the stares with live in their eyes. And the blushing and hiding away. And the awkwardness between the two.
(And everyone would just have a different approach at getting them to admit their feeling and pursue their crush.
Borg, minus Sergei, are more direct at pushing Kai, while Sergei is gentler and logical.
Mao crusades the rest of the team at getting Rei to open up about wanting things. That’s it’s okay to want things. And have feelings and crushes. [and Rei being confused because mao we broke up?]
Bladebreakers are a mix of both. Max is the ship pioneer. Always pull the two together and making sure they’re stuck together, even if they’re awkward and nervous with each other. Hiromi playing interference with Takao because he can be dense about their feelings and is like /I don’t get it. They both like each other. Why can’t they just date?/
And they have one BIG group chat for it. With some dumb group name. And it’s all of them updating everyone on what’s going on.
/Rei was watching Kai the entire practice today, like he couldn’t even focus/
/Rei’s hair accidentally touched Kai today, and he looked like he was going through five stages of grief that the touch was so short/
/went to the store today and Kai just stared at this tiger plush for five minutes and then he bought it. It looks just like Drigger. Coincidence? I think not/
/since when does Rei wear purple… like a certain someone we know does?/
/ever since kai said he likes long hair, Rei’s been wearing his hair down/
And eventually they’re all at a lose because why are they both so stupid!!! So dense!!
But a moment appears before them! The majestics are hosting a party. And maybe. Everyone pushes alcohol on the two. Rei being a clingy drunk and Kai being an oversharing one. And anywho one thing leads to another and the kiss. And everyone cheers. And that someone how sobers the two up just a tad.
And then, an awkward next morning where they both apologize and avoid each other both thinking they fucked up their chance. And the three teams are like our plan backfired and now they’re worse!!!!
an intervention. Where the two are forced to sit down with everyone. And it could be either max/mao/yuriy being like you two both like each other. It’s mutual. Stop the pining and date already. We’re so tired of you two beating around the bush, waiting for the other to make the first move.
Queue the simultaneous “you like me?”
And then they lived happily ever after, the end.

The vendors of Cotes Fantasci’s market town were ever busy with people— today even more so, it felt like. Looked like there must have been some small gathering of food carts for the day, which had brought even more attention to the normally abundant street, making it a bit difficult to navigate through. For Mao, however, wading through the crowds wasn’t terribly difficult in the slightest. As always, even in her wanderings, she stepped forth with purpose— wading through waves of people as she kept her gaze focused on the nearby vendors...
Until someone happened to catch her eye.
It was a girl wearing a particularly large hat— something that reminded her a tad of the headdress her sister wore from time to time. It wasn’t her hat that had caught Mao’s eye, however. She seemed to be struggling against the current of people, at first glance... no, not just that. The girl looked strained, and not simply out of frustration.
Mao wasn’t quite sure why she decided to do so (besides the sense of obligation she felt for seemingly being the only one to see this struggling girl), but she’d approach the other. And it was just in time too, for as Seles was about to fall over, Mao moved to catch her.
“Easy,” the woman would exclaim— voice low, yet clear amongst the bustling chatter all around them. “Easy. I’ve got you. Breathe.”

2x11 "Here There Be Dragons"
Bobbie's pissed. Which, yes. Be that. Good on you.
Isn't it convenient that her shuttle can't leave... I kind of like the scene where she trashes Not-Bester (Martens - who'd have thought that he's not actually as nice as he wanted her to believe...) because it sure was satisfying, but I also feel that was a little too easy. Up to that point he didn't strike me as the kind of guy who'd just hand her the (conveniently present) evidence because she roughs him up a little. And she requests asylum, which makes a ton of sense.
The Martian embassy building was something. The ... um, "aesthetics" (or lack thereof) reminded me a lot of some of my (former) uni's less welcoming design choices.
Mao wants to meet Chrisjen. The scene where she and Ghazi talk about whether that's going to turn out to be a trap was fun. I do like them. I also think Ghazi will bite the dust eventually. Narratively he's just a little too convenient to have around for her. And I do have an inkling who else she might take along with her.
Naomi lost a child once. Which would never not have touched me, but as a parent? Can we stop messing around with the kids please? I'm halfway serious btw. With the focus on the kid on the station Johnson destroyed, the one on Eros, Meng's daughter and now Naomi's, it's getting just a tad overused. I do care about adult human beings (or, sentients) as well, you know? There's no need to bring out the big guns every single time.
Venus is protoing. Ah, nice. My wife called that the second we knew Eros was going to crash into it.
Alex sling-shotting around a gazillion moons. Wonderful :)
Meng wants a gun. And he handles with the exact amount of confidence I would have. I love those details.
Someone (Mao? Martens?) mentions Thoth as another site where they've been experimenting with the protomolecule. Not completely sure, but I don't think we've heard about that one before.
And Holden just lets that scientist die. While I do get the motivation, it's too much too sudden of a character development for me at this point. Just a few episodes ago he went apeshit on Miller for killing Dresden. And, more importantly, he's trying to get her to answer questions while not keeping her from bleeding out? Yeah. Sure.

Caliban’s War, Chapters 52 & 53
Huh, looks like Bobbie’s leaving too. There has been so much talk about how Rocinanter would benefit if they had someone with Bobbie’s knowhow that I kind of assumed that the book would pull some kind of manouver to get Bobbie to join them, or at least to seriously consider it while she goes to meet her family. Although it is possible that Bobbie will end up being restless, once she’s had time to process everything that’s happened since the war between Earth and Mars started.
Another thing that I was not expecting was Holden’s mother being racist against belters. Like, we’ve been told that there’s a lot of racism and bad blood between belters and earthlings, and we haven’t actually met very many normal people who could be used to showcase that, it’s just a somewhat weird place for it come crop up.
It would be nice for the plot point to lead something, like Holden having to stand up for his girlfriend after being wrong about his parents being racist, but I’m again not holding my breath.
I do wonder if the story is starting to be done with the Protomolecule, now that Mao seems to be dealt with. Like, it wouldn’t be unbelievable for them to crop up again, they were after all a very large and very influential organization, there’s just the possibility of things getting a tad repetitive. It would feel like there’s one group of people who are controlling everything that happens, which would make the setting feel really small.
