so so interesting which kh characters believe in fate and which don’t. so interesting that nearly all of khux is person after person saying ‘ok but there’s gotta be a way out of fate right like There’s a way out?’ and there is not even a little bit. so interesting that xehanort believes so much in fate above all else that he’ll travel back in time to be the catalyst for the worst parts of his own life. so so interesting kairi in melmem telling xehanort that he’s the one that ruined her fate. Man.

Ok not gonna actually put my replies on someone's post bc that's RUDE (and it's not borne out of ill will I genuinely like discussing this stuff but idk if that is appropriate here!! I don't know this person!! I am bad at knowing when to open my mouth!) but I really liked the theology of vespertine? I didn't take it as things done in the Lady's name are Valid Religious Actions, nor did I take it that both good and evil come from the Lady. Its clearly based off of Christianity, and i thought the questions it asked about theodicy were quite interesting (and perhaps my favourite bit of the book, and why I found it so moving).
It was less that the Lady causes xyz bad thing to happen, and more that the Lady /allows/ xyz bad thing to happen only so that ultimately some good can be brought out of it. Which, imo, is very in line with a Christian view of theodicy, esp in the Pauline epistles (and Job, and obvs the Gospels). Evil is brought into the world by human action, but that human action is allowed to happen (BC free will) and ultimately is transformed toward the Good. That doesn't mean that ppl aren't shitheads who claim that their evil is divinely sanctioned, nor that hurt people do not (understandably) blame the divine and lash out in their hurt. But that ultimately, for whatever ineffable reason the inexorable will of god PERMITS evil to occur, knowing in divine wisdom and grace it will be transformed to the Good.
That's not a comfort. Not really. I think it is frightening and terrifying and awe-inspiring and horrible all at once. I have my own personal feelings on the subject. I just think it's an important distinction, and fwiw much closer to my own reading of the book. Its the same sort of troubling not-answers to questions of divine providence, grace, and the will of god that the sparrow duology examines (in a much less harrowing way, albiet, the sparrow is heavy).
Idk man I think I'm just fascinated by theodicy and conceptions of evil in non dualistic universe where evil exists despite an omnipotent and all-good divinity. I think the Augustine Brainrot got me.

The way fanon clings to the depiction of cartoonishly abusive Willis despite the fact that it was a shitty retcon in the first place and is also no longer really true because rebirth sorta re-retconned it. The idea that Jason has nothing but contempt for his father is something that was not true before new52 and is also not currently true. There’s elevendy million posts/fics/discussions about (rebirth) rhato 25 but somehow nobody seems to remember that part of the reason why Jason took out Cobblepot the way that he did was because he was spiraling over Willis and wanted revenge for his ‘death’. Like remember when new52 made Rose Wilson fully white for a little bit? Me neither we should all forget everything that happened in that era <3

I realized there are people watching snw that are like just watching without knowing any tos plot points. Like I get not wanting to watch tos (it has rough moments) but it is amazing how you’d experience it from that perspective.
Like imagining being like — oh so what becomes of Spock and tpring? Will Sam Kirk die next season? Or chapel? What’s with this time travel episode?

I'm looking forward to getting to forge of darkness but ngl the path to ascendancy books are taking too much of the mystery away from the malazan series - like it's cool to see kellanved and dancer goof about but it feels like it's just checking off names people recognise, even when it contradicts stuff we know about Whiskeyjack and Dujek (for example) just to have them be there at the start?? I'd much rather each book skip ahead a decade or something, and focus on stuff we barely even heard about before, not just "oh you remember that really cool thing we hinted at? yeah here it is laid out pretty prosaically".
Idk if it's Ian Esslemont, bc from the two (2) of his empire books I've read I really enjoy his writing style and think it meshes well, but they're just kinda draining a lot of the magic out. Things like the Tiste Edur and K'chain Che'malle are talked about as slightly niche but common knowledge, and it's just a bit lame?

Book recs!
Follow private Investigator Carlisle Hsing as she pursues two cases on two different planets. Her world features data implants, symbiotes, AI, and a climate as deadly as the criminals.
Try if you want something that’s not romance. Traditional sci-fi but light reading.
