LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
February 15, 2024
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
Today House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) canceled tomorrow’s votes and sent the House of Representatives into recess until February 28.
Before recessing, Johnson refused to take up the national security supplemental bill the Senate passed early Tuesday morning, providing aid for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan and humanitarian aid for Gaza. Johnson said the House must “work its own will” rather than vote on the bill at hand because the measure did not include border security measures.
Yesterday, Johnson told House Republicans that the House will not be “rushed” into passing foreign aid, despite the fact that Ukraine’s desperate need for ammunition is enabling Russia to regain some of the territory Ukraine’s troops reclaimed over the past year.
But is it a rush? President Biden asked for additional national security funding in October 2023. A majority of lawmakers in the Senate and the House support such a measure, but Johnson bowed to the demands of MAGA Republicans and said he would not bring such a bill up for a vote unless it contained border security measures to address what they insisted was a crisis at the southern border of the U.S., apparently banking on the idea that such a compromise was impossible.
But Democrats were so desperate to pass the Ukraine funding they see as crucial to our national security that they agreed to give up their demand for a path to citizenship for the so-called Dreamers, those brought to the United States as children and reared here but now stuck in citizenship limbo. So, after four months of work, Senate negotiators produced a bill that offered much of what Republicans demanded.
Once it was clear a deal was going to materialize, Trump demanded it be shut down, likely because he has promised his base that on his first day back in office, he will “begin the largest domestic deportation operation in American history,” and a new border measure would both undermine his campaign message and stymie his plans. Although the border patrol officers union endorsed the Senate national security measure that included border security provisions, Republicans killed it.
Senators immediately went to work on a national security supplemental without the border measure, passing it with 70 votes on Tuesday morning. Johnson indicated he would not take it up, right about the same time that Trump renewed his attack on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization that underpins U.S. and global security.
“House Republicans are…siding with Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and Tehran against our defense industrial base, against NATO, against Ukraine, against our interests in the Indo-Pacific,” the White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said yesterday, and President Joe Biden has repeatedly warned that “[f]ailure to support Ukraine at this critical moment will never be forgotten.” But Republicans, too—including Trump’s vice president Mike Pence—are begging House Republicans to pass a version of the measure.
Perhaps to pressure Johnson, House Intelligence Committee chair Mike Turner (R-OH), who is a strong supporter of aiding Ukraine in its fight against Russia, yesterday released information about “a serious national security threat,” urged all members of Congress to view the intelligence, and called on Biden to declassify all information relating to it. That threat appears to be antisatellite weapons Russia is developing, but they are not yet operational. Senators Mark Warner (D-VA) and Marco Rubio (R-FL) of the Senate Intelligence Committee expressed concern that the disclosure might have revealed intelligence sources and methods.
And now, rather than taking up the national security measure, the House has recessed.
National security and border measures are not the only things the House is ignoring. Since this is a leap year, putting February 29 on the calendar, the recess will give the House just three working days to pass appropriations measures for the 2024 budget before the stopgap continuing resolution to fund the government expires on March 1.
The appropriations process is so far overdue that it threatens to become tangled in that for 2025, which is set to begin March 11, when the White House is expected to release its budget proposal for the year.
While they have been unable to make headway on these measures, on Tuesday night, Republicans in the House of Representatives voted to impeach Homeland Security secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, blaming him for an increase in migrants at the border. Johnson has named as impeachment managers a number of Republican extremists, including Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), Andy Biggs (R-AZ), Clay Higgins (R-LA), and Harriet Hageman (R-WY).
As Jake Sherman and John Bresnahan of Punchbowl News reported: “This is the most chaotic, inefficient and ineffective majority we’ve seen in decades covering Congress. It started this way under former Speaker Kevin McCarthy and has gotten worse under Johnson.”
Trump and his MAGA supporters are demonstrating their power over the Republican Party. Trump is trying to install hand-picked loyalists, including his daughter-in-law, at the head of the Republican National Committee, where she vows that “[e]very single penny will go to the No. 1 and the only job of the RNC—that is electing Donald J. Trump as President of the United States.”
When Trump was in office, his team installed loyalists at the head of state parties, where they have worked to purge all but Trump loyalists. MAGA Republicans are continuing that process. After Senator James Lankford (R-OK), a reliable conservative tapped by Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to negotiate a border measure, produced one that favored Republican positions, right-wing provocateur Benny Johnson called those like Lankford “traitors…spineless scum” who must “be criminally prosecuted.”
That demand for purity appears to be radicalizing the House as Republicans inclined to get things done, including five committee chairs, have announced they will not run for reelection. Meanwhile, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene yesterday said that British foreign secretary David Cameron, who is urging Congress to pass Ukraine aid, “can kiss my ass.”
But the MAGA agenda is falling apart in the courts. True the Vote, the right-wing organization that insisted it had evidence of voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election, has told a Georgia judge that, in fact, it has no such evidence. Their claims provided the basis for the arguments about voter fraud highlighted in right-wing pundit Dinesh D’Souza’s film 2000 Mules.
Today a grand jury convened by Special Counsel David Weiss, whom Trump appointed to investigate Hunter Biden, indicted former FBI informant Alexander Smirnov for making a false statement and creating a false and fictitious record about Hunter Biden. Smirnov has been a key witness for Republican allegations about Biden’s “corruption” since Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) released Smirnov’s unverified claims about a year ago and other MAGA figures spread them. Matthew Gertz of Media Matters noted that Fox News Channel personality Sean Hannity’s show highlighted these allegations in at least 85 separate segments last year, including 28 monologues. Now a grand jury has grounds to think Smirnov lied.
Trump’s personal problems also continue to mount.
Today Judge Juan Merchan confirmed that Trump is going to trial on his criminal election interference case, with jury selection beginning on March 25. Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg has charged Trump with 34 felonies for falsifying business records in order to hide critical information from voters before the 2016 election. Prosecutors say that Trump defrauded voters by illegally hiding payments he made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to keep her quiet about their affair before the election. As Andrew Warren put it in The Daily Beast, the case “is about a plot to deprive voters of information about a candidate for president—information that Trump and his allies believed to be damaging enough to hide.”
And yet Trump’s MAGA Republicans are calling the shots in the House, and their refusal to support Ukraine threatens to empower Russian president Vladimir Putin and thus to lay waste to the rules-based international order that has helped to prevent world war since 1945. Conservative pundit Bill Kristol noted earlier this month that “politics is often a stage on which people act in bad faith. Still, the demagogic opposition of House Republicans to the border/Ukraine bill, when they've all said the border is an emergency and that Putin should be stopped, is just about the baddest bad faith ever.”
The implications of that bad faith for the country—and the world—are huge.

A second Trump administration would make the first one seem like a festival of human rights and democracy.
High on the list of groups targeted for repression is the LGBTQ+ community. And Trump could accomplish his homophobic goals simply by packing his administration with extremist Christian nationalists. No new laws would be necessary. And with the power to appoint federal judges, including SCOTUS, his decisions could withstand legal challenges.
By contrast, Joe Biden is the most LGBTQ-friendly president in US history. Those who claim both parties are alike probably are afflicted with political dementia.
President Biden's Pro-LGBTQ Timeline

Pro-Trump members of the LGBTQ community are analogous to something like "Gazans for Netanyahu". If they enjoy persecution, let them go to Russia or Iran.
It's almost always easier to prevent dictatorship than it is to get rid of it after it's in power.

Thinking about something with the Adrestian titles and Houses -
We know from Nopes’ books how House Varley had two roles, the head of House Varley and to be the Minister of Religion.
Ditto for House Bergliez, it is supposed to be an important House in itself, but the current Head of House Bergliez is also the Minister of the Military.
Leopold had two sons, the eldest one we never see is set up to be the next Head of House Bergliez, but in Nopes, Leopold gives Jar- I mean, the holy weapon to Caspar, calling him the next generation of Bergliez warrior. In CF, he is ultimately appointed to be Minister of War.
Also, if I remember correctly, one day an Aegir became PM, and then said Aegir made PM an inheritable charge??
The Book from the Library about Imperial nobility is interesting on that topic :
A house of counts that has inherited rule over the Empire's domestic affairs, particularly those relating to administration, finance, and the judiciary.
A house of counts that has inherited rule over the Empire's Ministry of Military Affairs.
A house of counts that has inherited rule over the Empire's Ministry of Religion, whose main responsibility is to maintain amiable relations with the Church of Seiros
A house of dukes that has inherited rule over the Empire's Ministry of the Exterior.
Ergo, from what I can gather, Adrestia had several roles and positions that were, in theory, accessible to all “Prime Minister”, “Minister of Religion/Head of the Southern Church”, “Minister of War”, “Minister of Finances” etc but those positions ultimately came to be locked to families : on paper everyone can become the “Minister of War”, but in reality, it’s always a Bergliez who has that title.
And at the time that book was written, the title of “Ministry of the Exterior” etc became something that is inherited.
What does it mean ?
I guess that from a system where people became nobles and received titles based on their engagement, knowledge and will to serve the people, Adrestia ultimately became the current hereditary one - you will get a title if you are born as the son child if the current person who is holding that title.
But it’s actually surprising how we don’t hear more about intrafamilial feuds - bar the Varley one that led the Empire to kick the Southern Church away - take the Bergliez current situation.
Leopold calls Caspar, in their Nopes paralogue, the next great warrior of House Bergliez, so Caspar would most likely get the title of Minister of War from him (something Supreme Leader gives him in the CF endings). But Caspar’s brother is still the Head and Leader of House Bergliez, so what happens next when each of them has a kid? Would Caspar’s kid have a right or a claim on House Bergliez, or could Caspar’s nephew/nieces could become Ministers of War, or is it something only reserved to his own children?
This is also where Bernie’s story doesn’t make any sense, unless we assume Grégoire is completely stupid - Bernie is, afaik, Grégoire’s only child. He planned for her to marry Ferdie, thus to become part of the Aegir family (or maybe he wanted to merge their two families?) but if Bernie becomes Ferdie’s wife, then who would inherit Varley’s two titles - Head of House Varley and Minister of Religion?
In a way I think the way Adrestia was depicted, it’s actually a good thing the BE gang don’t have siblings, unless mentionned, otherwise the lack of political drama might have been even more glaring that it is now.
And yet, right now, we are still supposed to believe a dynasty that has spanned for 1100 years as the ruling force of the most powerful state on the continent has no heirs - not even bastards or branch families - save for one person?
Meh.

👀👀👀👀🤔🤔🙅🏻‍♀️🙅🏻‍♀️_ In a major revelation, Candian local media reported that China is now opening illegal police stations across the world to promote its vested interests. Citing the reports of local media, Investigative Journalism Reportika, said that the President Xi Jinping-led Beijing government has opened numerous police stations in developed nations too. The report found that checkpoints have been opened in many countries around the world, including Canada and Ireland. The media investigation revealed that Fuzhou— a sprawling industrial and transportation hub— established informal police service stations affiliated with the Public Security Bureau (PSB) across Canada. Surprisingly, the checkpoints are located in major areas of the country, with three in the Greater Toronto Area. Citing the Fuzhou police, the report claimed the Chinese officials admitted their station overseas. Some claimed it has already opened 30 such stations in at least 21 countries. Interestingly, Fuzhou is not the only city that extends its footprints beyond the country, but other Chinese cities and provinces also operate their stations beyond their limits. Moreover, the report revealed that countries like Ukraine, France, Spain, Germany, and the UK have such arrangements for Chinese Police Stations— most of the leaders criticise the Chinese for human rights violations. In the Global South, the presence of these stations can be seen in Brazil, Ecuador, Argentina, Chile, Nigeria, Tanzania, Lesotho, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, Cambodia, Brunei and even Japan. #deepstate #trump #wwg #qanon #wga #maga #illuminati #pizzagate #thegreatawakening #newworldorder #draintheswamp #wakeup #truth #agenda #q #nwo #covid #obamagate #pedogate #mkultra #fakenews #kag #savethechildren #conspiracy #usa #darktolight #redpill #adrenochrome #g #pedowood https://www.instagram.com/p/CjHKRrPsH6h/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
May 21, 2023
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
MAY 22, 2023
The list of 500 banned Americans that Russian president Vladimir Putin released on Friday makes it clear that Putin is openly aligning himself with Trump and today’s MAGA Republicans. The people on the list are not necessarily involved with U.S. policy toward Russia; they are Americans who are standing in the way of the Trump movement’s takeover of our country.
Notably, one of the names on the list is Georgia’s Republican secretary of state, Brad Raffensperger, who refused to “find” the 11,780 votes Trump needed to win Georgia in 2020 and thus take the state’s electoral votes from Democratic winner Joe Biden. Also on the list was Michael Byrd, the Capitol Police officer who killed Ashli Babbitt as she attempted to break into the chamber of the House of Representatives, where more than 60 representatives and staffers were holed up, on January 6, 2021. Others made the “500 list,” according to the statement, for being part of “power or law-enforcement structures directly involved in the persecution of dissidents in the wake of the so-called ‘storm of the Capitol.’”
Since Trump’s attempt to overthrow the will of the voters on January 6, 2021, his supporters have imitated the language and the laws that enabled Putin to destroy representative democracy in Russia and Viktor Orbán to undermine liberal democracy in Hungary.
Attempting to set a new kind of imperial Russia up as a challenger to the liberal democracies that have held the majority of global power since World War II, Putin in 2019 declared liberal democracy “obsolete.” At a time when his own economic and social troubles at home threatened his continuing hold on power, he lashed out at democracy’s emphasis on equality before the law, saying that immigrant rights, gay rights, and women’s rights undermine “the culture, traditions and traditional family values of millions of people making up the core population.”
Like Putin, Orbán cemented power with attacks on immigrants, LGBTQ people, and abortion rights while claiming to be shoring up traditional religion. Not surprisingly, both Putin and Orbán have praised Trump, with the overlap between the former U.S. president and the autocratic leaders becoming more pronounced as Trump’s followers work to undermine U.S. support for Ukraine in its fight to push back Russia’s invasion and in the Conservative Political Action Conference’s decision to hold a second meeting in Budapest, Hungary, this month.
That overlap is also visible in the anti-immigrant, anti-LBGTQ, and antiabortion legislation spreading through U.S. states dominated by Trump loyalists.
When Trump was in the White House, his team worked hard to put loyal supporters into power in state Republican parties before the 2020 election, possibly aware that he was likely to lose the vote and would have to turn to loyalists to steal it for him. (Recall that on October 31, 2020, Trump ally Stephen Bannon told an audience that the plan was simply to say he had won, and now, in a lawsuit filed last week against Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, Noelle Dunphy alleges Giuliani told her of the scheme on February 7, 2019.) Packing the state parties with loyalists did indeed pay off: according to a study by Nick Corasaniti, Karen Yourish, and Keith Collins of the New York Times, at least 357 sitting Republican legislators in battleground states used their official positions either to discredit or to try to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
Radicalizing the state parties has continued since Trump left office, strengthening his base in state legislatures. Those legislators are now advancing the illiberal Christian democracy embraced by Putin and Orbán, using the same language and politics of fear to pass laws that explicitly reject the principle of a nation based in the idea that is central to democracy: that everyone is equal before the law.
The attempt to demonize immigrants has been central to the Trump base since he announced his presidential campaign with the statement that “the U.S. has become a dumping ground for everybody else’s problems” and went on to say that Mexican immigrants are “bringing drugs…bringing crime. They’re rapists.” (In fact, undocumented immigrants are less than half as likely as native-born Americans to be arrested for violent crimes or drug offenses.)
Republicans have refused to consider bipartisan legislation that would fund immigration courts and border security, and instead have hammered on the idea that immigrants are “flooding” our borders. They fought to keep the pandemic-related Title 42 in place, insisting that its end would create, as Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) put it, an “Imminent Invasion.” When, in fact, the end of Title 42 led to a 60% decrease in unauthorized crossings, Greene still pushed forward, calling for Biden’s impeachment for his handling of immigration issues.
This same antidemocratic extremism explains the anti-trans, anti-drag, and anti-LGBTQ legislation, all of which are an attack on equality before the law. A March 8 article in Mother Jones by Madison Pauly exposed how the wave of anti-trans legislation passing through Republican-dominated state legislatures is written and pushed by well-funded Christian activists and organizations who argue, like Orbán, that they are protecting children (although 86% of trans or nonbinary young people have reported the attacks on them are affecting their mental health, and nearly half have seriously considered suicide).
Advocates for those laws inaccurately claim that they are protecting children from genital mutilation, but as Nancy Goldstein of the Texas Observer pointed out, the American Academy of Pediatrics stands behind gender-affirming care. Dr. Joshua Safer, the executive director of the Mount Sinai Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery in New York City, explains: No other countries “are reconsidering the use of hormones and surgeries as first-line treatment for transgender children because hormones and surgeries are not first-line treatment for transgender children…. First-line interventions include mental health intakes and social adjustments…. Puberty blockers sometimes follow.” Those treatments are reversible if a patient changes their mind.
Nonetheless, the rhetoric of demonization is working: Brian Tyler Cohen reports (with video) that “Christian” pastor Jason Graber recently called for the execution of all LGBTQ people as well as the parents of transgender people: “They just need to be shot in the back of the head and then we can string them up above a bridge.”
Goldstein points out that the language of demonization Republicans are using mimics that of the “southern strategy,” by which Republican leaders from President Richard Nixon onward solidified their base by creating the idea that Black Americans threatened the well-being of white people. That strategy, too, is ongoing in the Republican Party. On Monday, May 15, Florida governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill that defunds any state college or university with a diversity, equity, and inclusion program and that bans courses that “distort significant historical events or include a curriculum that teaches identity politics,” a reference to courses that acknowledge racism or sexism. Texas, Tennessee, North Dakota, Iowa, and Ohio are considering similar legislation.
The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), a Latino civil rights organization; Equality Florida, a gay rights advocacy group; and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) have all issued advisories warning against travel to Florida. “Florida is openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals,” the NAACP said. “Before traveling to Florida, please understand that the state of Florida devalues and marginalizes the contributions of, and the challenges faced by African Americans and other communities of color.”
With its antiabortion legislation, the MAGA movement is also signaling its abandonment of the idea that everyone should be equal before the law. Since the Supreme Court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision last June, fifteen states have banned or severely restricted abortion rights. On Tuesday a supermajority of the North Carolina legislature, established when Tricia Cotham, a Democrat who ran on abortion rights, switched parties, overrode the veto of the Democratic governor Roy Cooper to ban virtually all abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy.
In Sumner County, Tennessee, these antidemocratic Republicans have taken over the county government and, as Christina A. Cassidy wrote today in the Associated Press, promptly changed the county’s official documents to say that operations would be “most importantly reflective of the Judeo-Christian values inherent in the nation’s founding.” They are trying to shape the county, including election rules, according to their ideology.
It is these same MAGA Republicans who are threatening to force the United States to default on its debt for the first time in our history, with catastrophic consequences, unless the Democrats agree to protect all tax cuts and slash the domestic spending that protects ordinary Americans. It’s important to remember that the global autocratic movement is not solely about creating a traditional religious society; it is about destroying democracy to concentrate wealth and power in a small group of men, usually white men, who will dominate the rest of us.
For all the talk of House speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) negotiating over a budget that Republicans will then approve before they are willing to raise the debt ceiling, he has never had the votes of the extremists that he needs to make that happen. They are demanding that the Democrats dismantle the government programs that protect ordinary Americans in exchange for agreeing not to blow up the world economy.
And so, the battle over democracy has come down to the debt ceiling.
Today, Biden told reporters that he would not agree to the extremists’ demands. “We put forward a proposal that cuts spending by more than a trillion dollars, and on top of the nearly $3 trillion in deficit reduction that I previously proposed through the combination of spending cuts and new revenues,” he said.
“Let me be clear,” he said. “I’m not going to agree to a deal that protects, for example, a $30 billion tax break for the oil industry, which made $200 billion last year—they don’t need an incentive of another $30 billion—while putting healthcare of 21 million Americans at risk by going after Medicaid.
“I’m not going to agree to a deal that protects $200 billion in excess payments for pharmaceutical industries and refusing to count that while cutting over 100,000 schoolteachers and…assistants’ jobs, 30,000 law enforcement officers’ jobs cut across…the entire United States of America.
“And I’m not going to agree to a deal that protects wealthy tax cheats and crypto traders while putting food assistance at risk for nearly… 1 million Americans.
“And it’s time for Republicans to accept that there is no bipartisan deal to be made solely—solely—on their partisan terms. They have to move as well.
“All four congressional leaders agree with me that…default is not—let me say it again—default is not an option. And I expect each of…these leaders…to live up to that commitment.
“America has never defaulted—never defaulted on our debt, and it never will.”

We have difficulty seeing reality when it's beyond our experience and coming into view ever so slowly. But what's happening to our country is clearer tonight thanks to Heather. It's a slow-moving government takeover — governments of all size and type.
Republicans have been nibbling away for so long but now are taking bigger and bigger bites, gobbling up democracy. Is anyone at this point doubting they indeed seek to kill the federal government and create conditions ripe for authoritarian rule?

Oklahoma's not OK.
Tumblr media
January 1, 2024
Too many of our states are being systematically ruined by Republican rule. Take, for example, the no-longer-so-great state of Oklahoma. According to the Oklahoma Policy Institute, here are only a few of the state's problems caused by GOP mismanagement:
• With an aging population, unfunded pension obligations, and an outdated tax system, Oklahoma will struggle to provide adequate levels of funding for core public services. • Oklahoma’s health care system reflects the challenges of a rural, high-poverty state, and we rank among the unhealthiest states in the nation. • Oklahoma provides fewer resources to common education compared to other states. • Oklahoma’s criminal justice system is in a crisis. Prisons have grown increasingly costly and overcrowded.
Two of the main forces behind Oklahoma's decline are Governor Kevin Stitt and State Superintendent for Public Instruction Ryan Walters (both pictured above basking in malevolent mediocrity). Neither is particularly qualified for his job. Stitt, elected governor in 2018, used to run a mortgage company (Republican voters are suckers for self-promoting entrepreneurs). While Walters taught high school history for a grand total of eight years prior to being appointed by Stitt to Oklahoma's top education position.
Both are dedicated MAGA culture warriors. Last month, Stitt issued an executive order banning diversity, equity and inclusion programs at the state's public colleges. Of course, Superintendent Walters quickly followed up by announcing new administrative rules targeting DEI in the state's K-12 schools.
In addition, Walters wants to amend the teacher code of conduct to ban educators who engage in certain activities like performing in drag (apparently a pervasive threat in Oklahoma). He's also proposing new rules to “ensure that prayer and Bible verses” are protected in schools.
Meanwhile, corporations like Volkswagen and Tesla are shunning Oklahoma as an undesirable place in which to do business. Panasonic, for example, even passed on a deal in which the company was to have received $698 million in subsidies if it invested at least $3.6 billion in a battery plant and created 3,500 jobs within four years. Panasonic chose Kansas, instead. State representative Mickey Dollens is right when he says,
You can incentivize a company with nearly $1 billion to move here, but they're still turning us down, and in my opinion it's because of the extreme conservative social issues, and policies that continue to get passed in the state.
With abortion, DEI, school libraries and religious domination receiving lots of attention from Republicans and the needs of its citizens receiving hardly any, Oklahoma is slipping further into the middle ages, rendering its future prospects depressingly n.g.
