there's literally 3.000< hectares affected by the fire in Achinech (esp: Tenerife), including forests, and white people complain about their fucking holiday homes
Tumblr media
this also happened with Benahoare (esp: La Palma), people worried about tourism, locals lost their homes, soils, even lives, but people were complaining about their ruined holidays and how long would take to make the island "vacation friendly" again.
Massive tourism KILLS.
Leave the canary islands fucking alone.

When owls find their way onto isolated islands lacking any terrestrial predators, they have a tendency to take up that role for themselves – evolving longer legs and shorter wings, and specializing more towards hunting on foot. From New Zealand to Hawaii to the Caribbean to the Mediterranean to Macaronesia, leggy island ground-owls have independently happened over and over again in the last few million years—
—And, unfortunately, they've all also become victims of the Holocene extinction, their fragile island ecosystems too easily disrupted by human activity and the arrival of invasive species.
The São Miguel scops owl (Otus frutuosoi) was found only in the Azores on São Miguel Island. About 18cm tall (~7"), it was slightly smaller than its relative the Eurasian scops owl, with longer legs, a wider body, and much shorter wings.
Its wing proportions indicate it would have been a poor flyer, instead primarily hunting on foot in the dense laurisilva forests. Since there were no terrestrial mammals or reptiles on São Miguel at the time, its diet probably mainly consisted of insects and other invertebrates – and it would have in turn been the potential prey of larger predatory birds like buzzards and long-eared owls.
All currently known subfossil remains of the São Miguel scops owl date only from the Holocene, between about 50 BCE and 125 CE. It's likely that it was extinct by the 1400s, following the settlement of humans in the Azores, destruction of its forest habitat, and the introduction of rodents, cats, and weasels.

Usnea articulata
String-of-sausage lichen
We often use dichotomous keys to ID lichens, and when trying to ID an Usnea and I get to the section describing a lichen with inflated, sausage shaped lobes, I know exactly which MFer they're talking about--this guy! U. articulata is a fruticose-filamentous lichen that grows in long, beard-like clumps draped over the branches of large, old trees. The surface is greenish gray in color, and can be smooth or covered in short spinules. The stems often become inflated and then constricted, giving them that distinctive string-of-sausages look. Internally, it has a thin, tight cortex, a wide, loose medulla, and a cartilaginous central axis running through the center. This distinctive little weirdy is very sensitive to air pollution, and so has a very limited distribution restricted to old growth forests in isolated regions of Europe, Africa, and Macaronesia. And with urbanization and pollution bungling up its habitat and restricting its range more and more, it is on the IUCN Red List in the UK and Italy.

Plant of the Day
Friday 21 April 2023
This amazing fern, Culcita macrocarpa (tree fern, cushion fern, mattress fern), was growing in the entrance porch of the Edinburgh Botanic Garden, Scotland, welcome building. This large perennial grows primarily in the shade of the subtropical forests in Macaronesia, northern Portugal to north-western and southern Spain.

Drakonidae
Tumblr media
Here are all the drakonid dragons for my Dracones Mundi project! Of all the dragons these have the most basic dragon bauplan: four legs, sometimes wings (wings for both males and females in firedrakes, for just the males in the azi and long), and a long body shape with a flexible armour of overlapping osteoderms. This is just one of eight dragon families in the project (the others being armoured dragons, beast dragons, wyverns/flying serpents, birdlike dragons, wyrms/serpents, sea serpents and feathered serpents).
The drakonids are split into three groups: the firedrakes, the azi and the long.
Firedrakes
Tumblr media

The Glitterdrake (subspecies - Emerald glitterdrake, sapphire glitterdrake, ruby glitterdrake, gold glitterdrake, amber glitterdrake, purple glitterdrake, rose glitterdrake, dark dragon, pocket dragon, moon dragon, sea dragon. Found throughout Macaronesia)
Long
Tumblr media
Druk (subspecies - common druk/Bhutanese druk, jade druk, Himalayan druk, Tibetan druk, Nepalese druk, bailong. Found in Bhutan and throughout the Himalayas)
