#lupin III vs detective conan: the movie

The Lupin III vs Detective Conan crossover TV special and movie had lots of fun moments overall (honestly, having Lupin III's Looney Toons physics in Conan's world is an experience lol).
But! I can't stop thinking about that moment in the movie where Lupin's gang returns the Detective Boys back to Agasa's house after the kids managed to find Lupin's hideout. Conan yelling "You are grounded!" to the kids (and Professor included) before storming off to track down Lupin was somehow peak comedy for me hahah
I mean, it's funny to think about a seemingly 6-7 year-old saying to three other actual 6-7 year-olds and a middle-aged grown man that they are grounded in the most 'mom is very disappointed after you completely disregarded her warnings' authoritative tone. It makes me wonder if Conan's Japanese VA (who is a middle-aged woman) has kids herself because that line sounded extremely well-used-practiced 😂😂😂

Being a fan of crossovers, this movie was pretty exciting for me to check out. Definitely didn't disappoint!
Lupin the III vs Detective Conan: The Movie is sort of one I wasn't sure how to feel about since I think I've only watched maybe one season of Lupin and it was definitely one of the more "modern" seasons.
That said, while I knew what to expect considering I do at least know the general direction the series takes, I feel it's fair to warn people who aren't familiar with the series to tread lightly.
To sum it up, it's, well, raunchy. There's sex jokes and lots of seeing women in provocative ways (especially Fujiko, my god that woman is the poster girl of extremely sexual women, even in this movie). Tons of cleavage. A bathing scene. It's very adult. Haha.
Which normally isn't a problem, but...I wasn't too fond of the fact Haibara got dragged into it. I just think when you're discussing certain things about the woman body and it's addressed toward a child (regardless of how old she is mentally) it feels a little wrong. Especially with an adult implyingly getting handsy with said child while making said comment.
So just...keep that in mind if you're like me and you're a little put off by it.
The humor of the series was a very good addition to this movie. I really do enjoy some of the gags of the Lupin series and it certainly delivered in this movie.
The characters were all really fun. I think my favorites were Jigan and Inspector Zenigatta.
I love Conan and Jigan's little playful banter of "being father and son". It was very precious.
By the way, there was a tv special before this one (Same name, just doesn't have "the movie" added on in the title). I would highly recommend watching it first as it provides a lot of context for the movie. Not to mention they do bring up some things from the tv special in the movie.
That said, you CAN watch the movie without the context. It's not like it's hard to follow otherwise.
I also want to say that Satou was an absolute delight in this movie. I love how she's willing to admit Lupin was her first childhood crush, but has no issues taking him down. She's hilarious and I just really enjoyed her in this movie. I kind of wish there could've been more of her.
It's rather funny to me as well that you can easily pick out which designer was doing which of the background and side characters. Like, I do think the Lupin series and Detective Conan mesh pretty well, but there are VERY MUCH artistic differences between the two that can be spotted at a glance.
Now before I add this to the rankings, I would like to note I'm not going to add a movie number to it since technically "Dimensional Sniper" is considered the 18th movie. But since this one came out after the last one, I figured I'd watch and write a little something up.
1.) The Raven Chaser (13th Movie)
2.) The Fourteenth Target (2nd Movie)
3.) The Lost Ship in the Sky (14th Movie)
4.) The Time Bombed Skyscraper (1st Movie)
5.) Magician of the Silver Sky (8th Movie)
6.) Captured in Her Eyes (4th Movie)
7.) Crossroad in the Ancient Capital (7th Movie)/Lupin the III vs. Detective Conan: The Movie
8.) Quarter of Silence (15th Movie)
9.) The Phantom of Baker Street (6th Movie)
10.) Countdown to Heaven (5th Movie)
11.) Strategy Above the Depths (9th Movie)
12.) The Private Eyes' Requiem (10th Movie)
13.) Full Score of Fear (12th Movie)
14.) The Eleventh Striker (16th Movie)
15.) The Wizard of the Last Century (3rd Movie)
16.) Jolly Roger in the Deep Azure (11th Movie)
17.) Private Eye in the Distant Sea (17th Movie)
Perhaps it doesn't make a lot of sense, but for some reason, it just feels best to give it tie status with another movie. It could just be laziness on my part so as not to have to fix the numbers, but I kind of feel like this is the way to go.
Especially since it feels almost like an unofficial official part of the Detective Conan Movie saga.
I don't really expect anyone to know what I'm talking about, I already know how confusing I must sound.
Either way, ending notes, great movie! Highly recommend when you just want a fun watch to give you a few laughs

It looks like some familiar thieves show up in the new City Hunter film, “City Hunter The Movie: Angel Dust (Gekijо̄ban City Hunter: Tenshi no Namida)”! 🌃✌️
The film will open in Japan on September 8. Anime Limited will screen the film in North America, the U.K., and Ireland in 2024.
Recently, the protagonist of City Hunter, Ryo Saeba, also showed up in a brief scene during Lupin III VS. Cat's Eye. Along with Case Closed / Detective Conan, it's fun to see several of TMS' properties linked together in this way!

I’m not saying Fujiko Mine is a gold digger, but she will take your money when you’re in need.
original reference(s) and un-halftoned drawing:

Her outfit is from the Pilot Movie (and by extension the Part 1 OP) as well as its recreation in Lupin III vs. Detective Conan: The Movie.

There's a manga and/or anime franchise about Lupin the Third, in Lupin's universe.
Throughout the franchise, there's a bunch of references to past content and meta stuff. Taken one by one they're just easter eggs, but when you put them all together, it's highly probable that there is some sort of intradiegetic biopic-ish series about Lupin III, in Lupin's universe.
The Pursuit of Harimao's Treasure: Lupin is reading a manga by Monkey Punch, implying that MP exists in his universe
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lupin III VS Detective Conan: Kogoro Mouri thought Lupin III was a comic book character and is surprised to learn that he is real
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Princess of the Breeze: a news article about Lupin mentions "TV first series", "TV 2nd series", and "[ep 2]"
Tumblr media
Green VS Red: there is a poster of the movie "The Castle of Cagliostro", and Yasuo is seen listening to Fire Treasure from the OST
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Characters are heard singing or whistling the opening theme on multiple occasions: a banker in Part 2 ep 143 “The Miami Bank Raid Anniversary” (8:44), and Lupin himself in "The Pursuit of Harimao's Treasure" (4:43) and in Part 2 ep 99 “The Scattered Magnum” (06:35), among others
Lupin's phone ringtone in "Swallowtail Tattoo" is the opening theme (30:50)
Goemon plays his music theme on the flute in "Episode 0 - First Contact" (39:40). Granted, Goemon's not the kind of nerd who would do that, but that movie is a story told by Lupin and possibly entirely made up, and he's the kind of nerd who would describe Goemon playing his own theme.
Zenigata's phone ringtone in "Angel Tactics" is his own theme (41:18); he and a couple of ICPO officers are also listening to the full song with lyrics version of Zenigata March on the radio in "The Columbus Files" (1:17:10)
And last but not least:
Part 6 ep 17 “Win or Lose in 0.1 Seconds” : Linfeng's large collection of Lupin III figurines (they could be custom made; but they could also be mass-produced)
Tumblr media
and "Dragon of Doom" (01:16) : plushies of the whole gang in a claw crane machine, which are definitely mass-produced.
Tumblr media
In conclusion:
"We heard that you liked Lupin III, so we put Lupin III in your Lupin III so you can Lupin III while you Lupin III !"

Hmmmm, other than the Rave X Fairy Tail special I can't really think of any anime crossovers on the top of my head.
Oh, Cyborg 009 x Devilman
Tumblr media
One day I'mma get totally fucking good at remembering to come back to asks sooner rather than later but I could have sworn I already had. Anyways, a whole month later post One Piece x DBZ x Toriko week..
Tumblr media
Another crossover I remember is Lupin III VS Detective Conan. It was for a special and for a movie, which honestly is just semantics 'cause they're basically both movies, but the latter has actually been dubbed so it would be pretty cool if Toonami were to ever one day air it.
And then there's Gundam and Hello Kitty.
Tumblr media
I'm super cereal.

It's the second Lupin episodes so here are a few new things to mention.
In Magical Princess Minky Momo (魔法のプリンセス ミンキー モモ), the Lupin character's name is spelled ルピン (“Lupin”), to create a separation with the way the name of Maurice Leblanc's character is usually transliterated into Japanese -- ルパン (“Lupan”). It also creates a distinction from Lupin III (ルパン三世), which is spelled the same way as the literary figure.
The younger figure I think is supposed to be a reference to Shinichi Kudo (工藤 新一) from Detective Conan (名探偵コナン), which is also sometimes called Case Closed in the English-speaking world. Incidentally, Kudo and Lupin III actually did appear together twice. The first was a made-for-television film (ルパン三世VS名探偵コナン) and the second was a feature film (ルパン三世VS名探偵コナン THE MOVIE).
Also, I LOVE when Momo transforms into Catwoman!

That screenshot from the Lupin III vs Detective Conan movie always reminds me of this Ghostbusters scene

Note
Not sure if this would be on topic or off topic, but if any of you seen the Detective Conan vs Lupin the III movie if you remember that last scene before the ending.
If you don't mind spoilers here is a YouTube link to get you up to speed.
Now it maybe 3 years late but imagine that happening for the Semi Finals.

Oh hey, didn’t know there was an actual crossover!
Also good job op for predicting the semifinals!

Jesus Christ, just when I thought Raven Chaser couldn't be topped!
Detective Conan Movie 20: The Darkest Nightmare is EXACTLY the sort of watch I would direct anyone to that would like something that's not only fills the craving for more Black Organization content, but is a really good watch if you love Akai and Amuro.
Such an exciting watch and a very good "what if" scenario should the "NOC" list get released to the organization.
This is probably going to sound weird, but I actually have really adored Gin from the very beginning, so not only getting more screen time of him, but getting to see him being his malicious and sadistic self was simply delightful!
And honest to god, if you thought Irish was an interesting addition, I think you'll really love Curaçao. She just gets a lot of development from the movie and I am forever disappointed that she's never going to be a canon character or have her story expanded on since she's just a one off character from the movie.
I just have so many emotions about this movie, but simply saying, I just loved it. I loved it and I fully push giving it a watch if you're a fan of the series. It is one I sincerely emphasize not to skip out on!
Anyway, once again I'm being obvious here with my ratings, but you know, oh well.
1.) The Darkest Nightmare (20th Movie)
2.) The Raven Chaser (13th Movie)
3.) The Fourteenth Target (2nd Movie)
4.) The Lost Ship in the Sky (14th Movie)
5.) The Time Bombed Skyscraper (1st Movie)
6.) Magician of the Silver Sky (8th Movie)
7.) Captured in Her Eyes (4th Movie)
8.) Crossroad in the Ancient Capital (7th Movie)/Lupin the III vs. Detective Conan: The Movie
9.) Quarter of Silence (15th Movie)
10.) The Phantom of Baker Street (6th Movie)
11.) Sunflowers of Inferno (19th Movie)
12.) Countdown to Heaven (5th Movie)
13.) Strategy Above the Depths (9th Movie)
14.) The Private Eyes' Requiem (10th Movie)
15.) Full Score of Fear (12th Movie)
16.) The Eleventh Striker (16th Movie)
17.) The Wizard of the Last Century (3rd Movie)
18.) Dimensional Sniper (18th Movie)
19.) Jolly Roger in the Deep Azure (11th Movie)
20.) Private Eye in the Distant Sea (17th Movie)
I admit, I struggled a little. I loved Raven Chaser and kinda wanted to keep it at number 1, but in the end, I know in my heart, I did like The Darkest Nightmare just a tad more, so oh well.
Both are great movies though and both deserve high praise. They were EXTREMELY well done.
And once again, I am thanking the movies at least for bringing back characters from the organization that are just never seen anymore in the original series. Kir, Chianti and Korn are just so great to see. God I really missed Kir in particular. I wonder if she'll ever return in the main series again.
The pessimistic part of me says most likely not, but we'll see.
