One Piece FILM RED Reaction
I wanted to review this movie, but like a lot of the recent One Piece films, the movie is so unique that I find it hard to organize my thoughts into a coherent review. So, I'm just going to string together some random thoughts I have about the movie.
Spoiler warning, if you still haven't seen the movie.
Tumblr media
I heard someone call this the BEST One Piece movie. I don't know if I agree. What certainly makes it different than the other adventures is that, for once, this is a very personal story for Luffy. They're not helping some random girl on some random island, this is one of Luffy's friends, and the "daughter" of Shanks.
But, I don't think they film itself really conveys an (authentic) close friendship between them. "Oh, we used to eat chicken wings together" feels kinda random.
Tumblr media
"Oh, I've known Uta forever, and we've always been friends," comes off somewhat like a Mary Sue. (Uta is NOT a Mary Sue, but we'll get into that later.)
Frankly, I don't think this movie works nearly as well without the tie-in episodes from the anime. (Episodes 1029 - 1030). The Anime gives us more time between the characters, as well as a peak at the relationship between Uta and Shanks, and Luffy and Shanks, which is important much later.
And YET - should those episodes count at all when looking at the Film itself? That's where I'm torn.

Uta is a Japanese style idol singer, but also like youtuber. The big twist is that she's gone quite mad, and has drawn all her fans into a death cult. She crosses over into unsympathetic villainy. (That's why she's not a Mary Sue.)
Basically, she used to have a channel, where she sang for people. She was a little bit of light in the dark world of One Piece. But as they say, when you look into the Abyss, the Abyss looks into you. So, she cracked.
At several points in the movie, events are punctuated by Uta singing. But that's another one of my problems - I don't speak Japanese. I can either look at the animation, or I can try to read the lyrics, but I can't do both at the same time. This is another reason I can't review this movie, because the songs just lose me.

Tot Musica makes no sense. Oh, sure, he's really contrived explanation. But I gotta take Toei to task for not having the courage to just make it part of Uta's powers. Uta makes a dream world, and it is a nightmare demon. It would make sense that you have to beat the demon to dispel the dream world.
But, no, if you did that, it makes Uta a complete villain actively trying to kill her friends, and it makes it look like Luffy killed her.
You know what they say, review the movie you got, not the movie you wanted. So, it's a random demon, that happens to have music as a theme. The action is so frenetic and its powers so vaguely defined that it feels like the final battle is just a bunch of stuff happening on screen. It is pretty though.

Then there's the ending. Credit where it's due - Toei killed her. But that's not the ballsy part, from a certain point of view --- Shanks killed her. She wouldn't have gone mad, if Shanks hadn't shipped her off to boarding school. And just with that, it was an okay ending.
But what makes things truly next level is when you consider those tie-in anime episode. At the end of Episode 1030, Ben Beckman tells little Luffy to stop asking about Uta - "There are some things men don't talk about."
Shanks and Luffy have an understanding, they don't talk about Uta. That's why he never mentioned her before, and that's why no one will talk about Uta ever again.
It's practically META. We always complain that these movies never have an effect on the main series, but now there's a good reason why this will not be brought up again. I'd almost call it groundbreaking.

So, there it is, all my rambling thoughts about the movie. Like I said, all the One Piece movies are Unique, and this is the most unique one by far. It is really hard for me to score, but it is a really great piece of One Piece media.
There is no score. Just judge it for yourself.
