my acotar unpopular opinions
taking this time to come out as an acotar reader. yes i've read all the books and i've spent way too much time thinking about it. i enjoy the books in the sense that i enjoy hating on many of the characters and loving a few of the others.
be forewarned inner circle fans. you will not like this.
rhysand is not a 'morally grey' character. he's a rapist and a groomer. he sexually assaulted feyre utm, he groomed her (reminder that she was 19 in acotar), and he withheld important medical information from her. 'you'll always have a choice' my ass.
nesta telling feyre about her pregnancy was not a bad thing. why do people act like it is? 'oh she did it to hurt feyre' hurt her by doing what? revealing the lies that her beloved husband had woven? revealing the fact that she'd die giving birth? the fact that rhysand told literally everybody but feyre?
mor is not the champion for women everyone thinks she is. this i will give to sjm it is truly impressive to make a character like women and still be a pick me. i'm not even going to go into her whole weird ass relationship with her dad (i still don't understand why she wouldn't just kill him. 'oh rhys needed the army' rhys is supposed to be the most powerful high lord ever. either admit he's a fucking loser or give me an actual good reason for this) or the fact she's seemingly incapable of doing anything to help the women in the court of nightmares, but everytime she was mentioned, i had to let out a heavy sigh and rub my temples.
on a similar topic. i liked eris. like a lot. out of all the acotar characters sjm has written, eris is by far my favorite.
the inner circle needs to sit the fuck down. they are the most hypocritical bitches i've ever met. they like to think themselves high and mighty. reading them make fun of lucien's band of exiles while their name is literally 'court of dreamers' was the most infuriating thing ever. and then they have the gall to be insulted when called out. don't dish what you can't take.
out of all the inner circle, the only one i don't hate is azriel. this is simply because he is the only one who hasn't opened his big fat mouth and done something bad (except if you maybe count his whole thing with elain). cassian is on my hit list. it's on sight with cassian.
nessian is sjm's worst ship and i will stand by that. lucien/nesta could have been so much. 'nesta would have ripped lucien apart' and cassian was your first choice? not even azriel was considered? like be so for real right now. sjm didn't see the potential of lucien/nesta and i will forever mourn that.
sjm is a terrible writer. i'm not saying this to be mean but she seriously just sucks at it. that being said i admire her ability to still make millions of dollars off her shitty writing. as a woman, i am rooting for her. as a reader, every day i wake up a shoot a prayer to the heavens begging the gods to not let sjm write any more books from the inner circle's pov.
lucien/elain is better than azriel/elain. argue with the wall.
eris/azriel is better than azriel/elain. you can kiss my ass.
NESTA/ERIS IS BETTER THAN RHYSAND/FEYRE. i know this because i have been enlightened.
feyre is a victim to rhysand. that being said, she is also a major bitch. both can be true because these things are not mutually exclusive. i wish she could make friends outside of the ic like nesta did, but i know that's unlikely.
feyre's pregnancy storyline was completely useless and went against her whole character.
acomaf retconned everything about tamlin and feyre's relationship in order to make more money. idc.
tamlin gets a ridiculous amount of hate. rhysand is hypocritical. so tamlin locking feyre in a house because she wants to ride out with him into potential danger is terrible and abusive, but rhysand locking nesta in the house of wind for... *checks notes*... having sex and spending money on alcohol is helping her? what?

This is a wild Elucien headcanon…
but please imagine Lucien being in a really dangerous situation with the Autumn court, like something happened and they have him as a prisoner, or unable to leave.
And Elain is there listening to how Lucien could potentially be held captive in a cold cell or even tortured.
And shes there when Eris says the only way to save him is if he has real ties to the Night Court or if he officially becomes a member, and the only way to do that is if he gets mated/married to someone from there, not anyone, but the High Lady’s sister.
And everyone is outraged with what he is suggesting but Elain is suddenly quiet.
And she suddenly says “I will do it” and everyone gapes at her, some try to talk her out of it (possibly Feyre or Nesta) but Rhys just nods.
And they send notice to the Autumn court that they cannot harm Lucien because he is a Night Court citizen, but Beron doesn’t believe it, he demands that Elain goes there so he can determine it.
Chaos, outrage, but she agrees, and she obviously doesn’t go alone. She convinces herself that while she doesn’t owe Lucien anything, she is tired of the bloodshed, the loss, and if she has the power in her hands, she will act. That is all, she couldn’t care less about him. She convinces herself she would be this worried for anyone that is close to her sister, it’s not because shes worried and scared and petrified of something bad happening to him.
They’re in the Forest House, they bring out Lucien who is luckily generally unharmed but Elain looks at the binds in his wrists and her whole body reacts to the sudden urge to protect. Beron takes one sniff at them and knows it is true. They’re mates. But Beron says an unfulfilled mating bond is not valid (listen idk about these fae laws bear with me) they need to marry. Elain declares that was the plan all along. Lucien is shocked. (I just imagine what must be going through his head seeing his mate stand before Beron in the same room where Jesminda was killed)
They let Lucien go with his mate but they have to stay in the Forest House until everything gets resolved. Elain and Lucien are shoved into a room, no more chains on him, but he doesn’t understand any of it.
Both of them are standing awkwardly in the room. Lucien is staring at her as if she has grown ears, still shocked, still reliving moments, furious at them for being so dumb as to risk themselves for him. He supposed he really was a big asset for Rhys to have done this. But her… why was she here? Why did she put herself in this position?
“Did they make you do this?” He says through his teeth.
She muses on what to say. “No” she gets offended with the assumption that she can’t make decisions for herself. “I agreed to this and came on my own free will”
“Why would you do such a thing?”
“Because I’m tired of people dying, I wouldn’t forgive myself if I could have done something” A silence and for some forsaken reason Elain has the need to add. “This doesn’t mean what you think it means”
Something irks at Lucien then, and the awoken nerves on his body make him respond to that. “And please tell, Lady, what do I think it means?”
Elain clenches her fists. “That I’ve changed my mind about you… about this” She signals between them. “This is just temporary, out of necessity”
Lucien just stares at her.
“I never entertained that you did, I can assure you.” It is easier to turn on her, on this beautiful female that is putting herself at risk for him, than to be hurt at the continuing rejection from her. “You’ve always just assumed that I’m some brute fae that wants to steal you away, let me tell you now that we’re speaking frankly, that its not the case. I can’t control the pull from the bond, but I have no interest in pursuing a female who doesn’t want me”
That sends Elain to retaliate. “What about the gifts then, was that not pursuing?” She cocks her head arrogantly.
“I was bringing them to Feyre as well. That was me being polite, but guess you don’t know the first thing about that”
“You are one to talk about politeness when I’m here risking my life for your neck and this is how you treat me” She takes one step closer.
“I never asked you to do it” He mirrors her and steps closer with his broad hands clenched in fists.
“I will just let you die next time then”
“Fine by me, as long as I don’t have to endure you shoving it on my face”
“Asshole”
“I’ve been called worse” A sly, angry smile creeps at one corner of his mouth. She suddenly realizes they’re breathing on each other’s face.
“And all this time I thought you were a gentleman” She summons her anger to keep focused.
“You will learn I can be a gentleman, Elain” Her name on his lips, for the first time. “But I can be so much worse too”
His breath is hot on her face, their hearts already beating fast.
“You admit you were pretending then, to win me over”
A sharp breathy laugh from him. “If I wanted to win you over, I would not have tried to be gentle”
Her lips form a thin line as she holds herself, the pull, his words, the sudden effect of his mismatched gaze intense on her face.
“You shouldn’t have done this” He says quietly, roughly, his eyes showing something beyond just annoyance, she sees the fear in them. She pushes it back.
“What’s done is done” She says. “We will pretend, see this through, and then we’re done”
“Alright, dove”
She’s startled. Her nostrils flare. She ignores the outrageous pet name he just used on her. “I’m going to take a bath, I suggest you do the same, you stink” She begins to walk away and stops herself “I mean after I’m done” She frowns as she strolls away.
He watches her with sudden amusement.
He’s scared, hes pissed and hurt. He’s tired. But something inside him sparks, and he can’t really put a name to it.
Oh he’s not alright.

The Pro Elain tag is literally full of Elriels... Please fill it with Elucien... I want to see then mad (even if they are already mad unprovoked)
IT IS MY SOLEMN DUTY TO RECLAIM THE PRO ELAIN TAG FOR ELUCIENS, AKA THE REAL PRO ELAINS IN THIS FANDOM 🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡 After "letting his scarred fingers touch her immaculate skin," "one moment, and maybe a taste, and that would be it," Azriel absolutely grosses me out. After Azriel said this:
“There is an innate darkness to the Dread Trove that Elain should not be exposed to.” Even after Elain said this: “You can’t have it both ways. You cannot resent my decision to lead a small, quiet life while also refusing to let me do anything greater.” When Azriel said this in the bonus chapter: "I'll defeat him with little effort." When Elain said this: “I am not a child to be fought over.” There's only one man with which Elain will achieve her true potential. Lucien Vanserra. ELUCIENS. WE. ARE. THE. REAL. PRO. ELAINS!!

This is more of a rant than an actual question but I need Lucien to KNOW he is not Beron's son. I will never be able to reallistically believe he is as smart and clever as SJM has hinted at if he DOESN'T know! Plus, if Lucien is Helion's Heir he'd have to have SOME day court powers and he'd probably had to hide them in Autumn and how would he do that if he didn't know he was helion's son/not Beron's son?? I've never bought the theory that eris and his mother "binded" his powers, i truly think he's hiding them on purpose just like Aelin buried her fire magic so deep inside her when she was afraid of it
I feel like he knows he's a bastard, actually! I think there's a lot of hints to it. When we see this thoughts in ACOWAR we see him think about his mother and that he kept some things about her a secret because they were personal and irrelevant.
"I am Lucien. Seventh son of the High Lord of the Autumn Court." And a whole lot of nothing. He'd told the shadowsinger all he knew--of his surviving brothers, of his father. His mother...he'd kept some details, irrelevant and utterly personal, to himself.
His might be that he knows LoA had an affair, but it could also just be about the abuse she recieves from Beron. But we later discover secrets his mother has been keeping. And I also think "a whole lot of nothing" is interesting to say too, because saying he's the seventh son to Beron is "a whole lot of nothing".
And we also understand how the High Fae magic develops in their youth because of Mor. He probably had his Day Court powers develop as his Autumn Court powered developed, but LoA and Eris might have told him to suppress it.
I don't think he has had the room to explore his Day Court powers. He keeps a lot of things suppressed. And when he breaks free from Hybern's spell at the end of ACOMAF to get to Elain, that was a sudden, in the moment thing fueled by his anger and the mating bond. We don't know his thoughts and feelings about that moment and how he was able to free himself, so it's hard to say.
And I think Lucien is smart enough to figure out that Beron mistreating him might be for a deeper reason. And he does have darker skin than his brothers. Yes, that's technically a retcon because there's signs that this wasn't what SJM intended in ACOTAR because he's decribed to look like Beron UTM, but anyways lmao.
I don't think he knows he's Helion's true son though, mostly because SJM will want the dramatic reveal! He could fully think that LoA had an affair with a random Day Court male. I do have theories that it could be possible Lucien knows Helion is his father based on how the High Lord's powers transfer to the next person and how the heir has to hide their powers--we see this with Rhys and Tamlin.
I feel like there could be a lot of signs that he knows he's a bastard, but think SJM has retconned a lot of stuff surrounding Lucien and his true heritage so it's hard to come up with actual theories. She said that she didn't go into Lucien's full backstory until ACOMAF, so honestly, a lot of potential "hints" in ACOTAR are a bit irrelevant now. But I'm also pretty cynical of SJM tbh lmao and I enjoy coming up with headcanons to fix the holes she left.

Could Vassa Be Immortal After All?
Tumblr media
A Firebird Theory
(WARNING: HOFAS SPOILERS BELOW)
While reading CC3 I couldn’t help but notice a plot element regarding curses that brought me back to Vassa in ACOTAR.
In HOFAS we learn Jesiba's mysterious backstory and all this talk of curses- I couldn’t help but to meditate on our favorite firebird. Jesiba unveils that she has been cursed in Chapter 38:
Tumblr media
And also elaborates that there were unintentional consequences of the curse:
Tumblr media
Jesiba obviously holds a strong grudge against her cursor but is able to use the curse to her advantage.
Tumblr media
So Jesiba, similarly to Vassa, was a mortal, cursed unwillingly by an immortal male figure. The curse made her immortal in turn. This has me thinking- what if the same has happened to Vassa? More from Ch.38:
Tumblr media
I also find the passage in ACOWAR really interesting, in which Feyre is describing her perception of Vassa the first time they meet:
‘Only a few years older than me, but ... young-feeling. Coltish. Fierce and untamed, despite her curse.’ (ACOWAR chapter 79)
Could this be because although Vassa is, let’s say, age 28- she actually stopped physically aging when she was cursed at age 20? Perhaps it's just Feyre noting that she's a spicy pepper. Who knows.
I recently went down a rabbit hole of Slavic lore and I’m so intrigued by Vaasa’s storyline in the upcoming books. Most folks are aware that SJM has taken her story directly from Slavic mythology- and there are loads of potential breadcrumbs in the fables of:
Ivan Tsarevitch in which Ivan, the youngest of several malaligned brothers, sets out on a quest to free a firebird from a dark sorcerer who also entraps other princesses (often Koschei the deathless).
Princess Vasilisa in which an archer finds a firebird’s flaming feather and gets roped into a quest to deliver a lost princess. Hello Elain’s vision regarding this exact imagery: “I saw a feather of fire land on snow and melt it.” (ACOWAR)
Swan Lake in which Princess Odette (Vassa) is cursed into a swan form by an evil lord and can only take human form between midnight and daybreak. Only a faithful vow of true love can break the spell. If her true love makes a vow to the wrong woman (Elain perhaps) the princess dies instead. Could something as powerful as a male (Lucien) breaking his mating bond to forge a destiny with Vassa be the key to breaking her curse??
Who knows.
Will Vassa be immortalized by Koschei's power touching her and chaining her to the lake? Will Lucien be the key to deliver her from her curse as Ivan was in the fables?
Tumblr media
I don't know. But regardless of Lucien's heart, I myself am a Vassa acolyte. I'm so enraptured by the beautiful myths surrounding this lore, and am so intrigued to learn what becomes of Vassa as a heroine in her own right. Her character and story have so much magical potential!
In the words of Yakov Polonsky’s poem:
And in my dreams I see myself on a wolf's back
Riding along a forest path
To do battle with a sorcerer-tsar
In that land where a princess sits under lock and key,
Pining behind massive walls.
There gardens surround a palace all of glass;
There Firebirds sing by night

Thinking a lot about Brennan saying in the Calamity wrap up how he made sure that Zerxus had a moment where his value of redemption helped them. And how Laerryn’s scientific advancement also helped stop a bigger calamity. Because he didn’t want people to draw the hard lines of “redemption is stupid and doesn’t work and wanting to progress to new heights is dangerous” I think back to what Brennan said about how in that one instant it failed. But in another, it succeeded.
And how that relates to this journey from C2 to C3. I’m obviously not the first to point out the glaringly blatant parallels and similarities in Essek and Ludinus. The amount of them are insanely high. But the contrast is also very clear. Essek ends as a great friend to the M9, Caleb’s lover, redeemed in the eyes of our focus characters. Ludinus is currently trying to blow up the fucking moon and kill the gods.
So there’s that recurring idea of something going right in one instance. And going terribly wrong in another.
Where Essek had at least one thing, one person he cherished (his brother Verin, and eventually the M9) other than his goals, Ludinus has no one. Not a single person he would potentially stop what he’s doing for. No one he would feel true regret in disappointing. Perhaps someone did reach out to him like the M9 did for Essek, but it failed to reach him in turn. The ways in which these two characters contrast and end up in wholly different places in the narrative is so striking. One is redeemed and one remains villainous.
There’s this concept in C2 in which no matter how badly you fucked up, if you stop and try to be better, there is hope and a path forward for you. It’s with Essek and Caleb. Astrid and Eodwulf. Molly/Lucien, who get to start again with Kingsley.
C3 with Ludinus is exploring the flip of that. The instance in where this doesn’t happen. In which someone refuses to stop. To keep barreling down that destructive path. Ludinus is the culmination of every stopgap failing. He is what Caleb feared Essek would be, what he could have been. It’s interesting to get the “We’re not so different you and I” villain but the PCs aren’t the ones he paralleling.
But in a way it kind of wraps back around to Brennan’s statement in that these are choices narratively for the audience to ponder. The connections are there for us to see and reflect on. I don’t know if this means anything really but I find it quite intriguing.

So I had a hilarious moment in Skyrim where Neb and Lucien started fighting, because Neb had presumably been hit by friendly fire from an attack by Lucien... But hey, given the ice spikes, I would have said Tally but maybe Neb needed a reason to bash an Imperial.
Tumblr media
Taliesin : ...Should someone tell him it was me, or? Lucifer : Nah.
So here it is, after a few blows of the sword, Lucien, determined not to let himself be done, retaliates with great blows of magic.
Tumblr media
...Which sends Nebarra flying into the ashes, for the first time.
Tumblr media
But Nebarra is stubborn and does not let himself be dismantled for "so little". After all, he's fighting an Imperial, he's already fought a number of them two decades ago. It's about his honor, I suppose.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But racial slurs don't sit well with Lucien.
Tumblr media
He remains polite but his gaze is worth all the speeches in the world. Obviously, Nebarra, blood heated by the fight, continues on its momentum.
Inigo : He shouldn't go after my friend Lucien. He has become a very powerful mage. Maybe he'll even turn him into a Mudcrab, eventually.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...And Nebarra, once again, took a tumble head over heels in the ashes, catapulted away by the impact of a powerful spell.
Tumblr media
Seeing the Altmer struggling to get up and climb to meet Lucien who was quietly regenerating his life, Xelzaz asked him, a little pity in his voice, pointing to the bloody wound that smeared his shoulder.
Xelzaz : Do you need help with that gash, Nebarra ?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...before rolling again in the ash, under the jaded gaze of the Argonian.
Xelzaz : *deep sigh*
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Apart from a few small cries of pain, Lucien did not open his teeth, but in his eyes you could read the determination not to let himself be walked on. Maybe even Lucien really realized his potential, his ability to really fight?
Tumblr media
Lucifer : ...Your last words ? Lucien seems fine. Remiel : Do you think we should help Neb? Xelzaz : No.
Tumblr media
Remiel : Do you think they have a long time yet? Night will soon fall. Auri : I find their fight very entertaining. Remiel : True, but I wouldn't want us to be surprised by vampires. Xelzaz : If Nebarra only knew when to stop...
Tumblr media
Taliesin : Wow, that was low. Even if for him this fight is cathartic, it's far from delicate...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lucien : My mother fought in the great war too! I won't put her to shame!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Inigo : Nice one my friend ! I think you broke your throwing record !
Tumblr media
Nebarra : *hand clenched on the hilt of his sword, unable to get back on his feet*
Tumblr media
Lucien : *after quickly healing himself* Ah ! That's was exhilatating ! Should we go back to Raven Rock ?

I like the potential of elucien but they currently have no chemistry. How do you think Sarah will go about their story?
For Elucien it's really as simple as forced proximity. Put them in a situation where they're forced to spend "two weeks alone together" (quote from ACOMAF) and I'm 100% certain that we're going to see exactly why SJM mated them. Heck, give me a day with them alone together, no sisters hovering near by, Elain having no choice but to speak directly too him without the heavy shadow of recent loss hovering over it and we'll see it.
I think some in the fandom are confusing Elain's physical attraction to Az as proof that she has chemistry with him but when physical attraction is used to build romantic chemistry between characters it will always result in a shallow love story. Lucien did find Elain to be the most beautiful female he'd ever seen so I'm not saying attraction can't be there but when you have characters giving into that attraction before something deeper has been established, true chemistry is going to fall flat. Having Az tell us he's avoided Elain for a year while she's still recovering from trauma doesn't call to mind that he's someone she was able to lean on, it doesn't make me believe that he feels anything for her because she could have used his friendship during that time (since she wasn't asking for distance) but he chose to stay away.
It calls to mind desperately crushing on someone in high school, where you watch them from afar, hoping for the day you can be together, and then finally you get your wish but you realize you actually don't know this person at all. You're infatuated with the idea of them rather than the real them.
I'm not saying Elain and Lucien have any sort of wild on page chemistry right now but it was kind of difficult for there to be any while she was mourning the loss of her humanity and Graysen. And though there was a little bit of hope that she was ready to move past that by the end of ACOWAR, she regressed in the novella Likewise was zero chemistry on page between Nesta and Cassian in ACOFAS, when she chose to push him away after the war.
Characters can't have chemistry when they are ignoring their possible love interest, you actually have to see them talking.
As far as how Sarah will go about their story, I think there are a few options.
Right now we have already had Elain volunteering to help with the Trove, Rhys saying that Elain is capable of more than they've given her credit for, that gardening results in something pretty but involves one getting their hands dirty along the way, and Elain saying she'll do whatever is needed.
The options are limitless because of the above.
The issues they currently face are:
Beron allying with Koschei and setting his sights on Spring.
The NC reminding us that they need Springs army as an ally but that Tamlin is even worse after the announcement of Feyre's pregnancy.
Koschei preparing to call Vassa back.
Koschei trying to get his hands on the Trove to free himself so he might rule their world.
The NC could decide they need to utilize Elain's Seer powers and send her to Day Court to help her train her powers. They don't seem very knowledgeable on Seers so Helion's library's might be the best place for her to learn how to train her powers.
The could decide a marriage alliance between themselves and other courts might benefit them and Elain could volunteer to marry Lucien because she's so over the concept of love and men after Graysen and Az's rejection that she's decided she'll simply focus on helping the courts rather than marrying for love (the concept was introduced in SF after all and SJM carried it out an arranged marriage trope in HOFAS).
They could send Elain as an emissary "spy" to the Spring Court. Not in the shadows or anything, just acting as their courtier, where she would gather information on the situation there, to be sure Lucien's reporting has been unbiased.
Elain could end up dreaming of the drums of Calanmai and find herself pulled to Spring on her own.
They could send Elain to the continent to retrieve Mor since Feysands daemati range does not work that far and have Lucien accompany her.
Or something SJM imagines up! I don't think any of us guessed how Nessian would end up being forced together in SF.

It’s VassIAN, not VassIEN: The Correct SJM Ship
I’ve seen the argument that Vassa and Lucien (VassIEN) will end up together and it makes no sense from an SJM standpoint. Not when Vassa and Jurian (Vassian) are right there!!
1. I present to you, honorable citizens, the evidence as told by text and SJM herself:
Exhibit A. Vassa was able to see through Jurian immediately (Chapter 54 of ACOWAR)
Tumblr media
From Feyre with Rhysand; Cassian with Nesta; Rowan with Aelin, SJM notoriously writes about how her endgame couples are able to see through one another clearly. And Jurian has a history of being unreadable and even his best friend of years, Mor, wasn’t able to see through him, but this mortal queen he just met can? Seems more than a coin-winky-dink to me
Exhibit B. They are at each others throats just as SJM likes to write for many other endgame couples.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see here, SJM loves writing couples (top images is from bottom left image is from Chapter 17 of ACOWAR) who are constantly at each others throats in a good way. She even admits so in this interview and her Facebook comment back in 2016 but the specific quote is “As soon as Nesta sat down at the table with Cassian, it was DONE for both of them—I literally could not keep them from each others throats (in the best way possible)”
Exhibit C. The banter is classic SJM endgame material.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The teasing and tension is screaming from the page. SJM says that banter is a clue for her endgame couples. What more do we need?
Exhibit D. They are two people working together to build the same vision for the future of their kingdom and people and honestly the same reactions to things
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To mortals who are already working well together to build their kingdom in a good balance and have shown that they have endgame potential? Yeah it just makes sense
Exhibit E. Unreadable faces making pretty damning cases.
Tumblr media
Across the maasiverse, people have unreadable faces when they are trying to mask emotions, I.e. Rhys all of ACOMAF and Nesta in ACOWAR—ACOSF. So what is Jurian hiding? Given everything else, one could safely bet his true feelings for the Firebird Mortal Queen.
In conclusion,
Tumblr media
creds to @acourtdelaluna for her help with these points!!

"The past can hurt. But the way I see it you can either run from it or learn from it"
I desided to cintinue my old post with Lucien - Simba parallel🧡
My english is awful, I'm sorry, but I hope I can convey my thoughts🤓
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Simba changed his diet, started eating bugs and chilling with Timon and Pumbaa according to their philosophy of life without rules and worries, forgetting his roots and his past for a while, but that didn't stop him from being a lion and a king.
The same with Lucien and his rejection of his potential future, power and responsibilities for a life which was full of hedonism (the focus on the ability to appreciate the enjoyment).
Remember Simba - he ate bugs, but beyond that he enjoyed the view, the beauty of the night sky and the adventures with his new friends. This manifested their freedom from the things which Pumbaa called vanity. I think that Lucien's life in the Spring (and in the Autumn too let's be honest, he did nothing there lol) was something so close to it. In the past. Before Amaranthe and everything that she did with the Prythian and personally with him.
Epicurus stated that the main criterion of pleasure is a successful life. The purpose of life is to avoid suffering and unhappiness because this is the only way to achieve the highest pleasure. Pleasure is good and pain is evil, so we should strive for pleasure and avoid pain. I keep thinking about Lucien's love of parties. Was it because he wanted to escape the pain, or because Lucien really loved being at the centre of society? Or both, and one doesn't exclude the other?
Lucien was always running away from his past and his life until ACOMAF, where his character changed and from that book on he lost his charm and the important parts of his personality. But at the same time I think that ACOMAF was the beginning of his personal journey of character development. Step by step from one episode to another, until he disappeared from the plot and became a character of the 100th plan lol. Sarah, please, just give us his book! His story potential is more important than some members of the inner circle.
We saw Lucien finally show his power and cool Cassian down with just one word. Cassian is the most emotional person in the IC and Lucien just said "Easy" to him, without any violence, calming him and his wild instincts. And it seems like Cassian didn't even understand and notice lol. I just hope we get to see more of this in the future.
All events that he went through all his life were his lessons, making him stronger and wiser. His life with his family, Jesminda and her tragic death, the murder of his brothers, the death of Andras and many other friends, Amarathe and the UTM, his life afterwards, the loss of Feyre as his "friend", the loss of Tamlin, SA and Ianthe's harassment, the lonely journey to the continent in search of solutions and help in the war, The loss of his second home and the place he loves, the loss of his reputation because of someone else's lie, his mating with Elain and her active ignoring his existence, his life as a hermit in the Mortal Lands with his new friends, the disrespectful behaviour of everyone in the Night Court, the potential conflict with Beron and Koschei.
He has to put his past behind him and stop living with the weight of his mistakes and his past, because even if someone prefer to believe that everything were only because of Lucien's faults or inaction, that's not entirely true. And I hope that Lucien, as a character, will understand it.
The past is in the past, but we can choose how we use it for the future.
Rafiki said to Simba: "The past can hurt. But the way I see it you can either run from it or learn from it"
For his personal growth and growing up as a character, he must take the path of self-awareness. To stop running away from pain, mistakes and trials, to stop thinking that there is something wrong with him.
Lucien must to accept his past, his mistakes and himself. He must also accept his power and the responsibility that comes with it. The responsibility for the future High Lord place from which he has always run away.
He must take the path of self-knowledge. Don't run away from pain, mistakes and trials, don't think there's something wrong with him, don't shut yourself off from the world and so on.
These are all challenges that I hope will make him stronger and wiser in the future. When he comes out of the crisis, realises his place and understands what he wants and how much he has to do, a new stage of growth, awareness and a sober look at things in his life without imaginary carelessness will begin.
Morrigan said that neither Lucien nor Elain are ready for a relationships and for the bond. And I think if they will be an endgame, they could be teachers for each other.
Both of them lived their lives full of joy and happiness. Lucien was in the Spring with his friends like Andras and Tamlin and Elain was with her human friends, society, father and Graysen.
Both Lucien and Elain must stop running. They need to stop and look around them. Face their fears and overcome them. To realise their place in the world and their role. To realise their worth and that they were born for more than gardens, a successful marriage and the status of prince or unloved son.
Realise and accept. Accept as adults. Accept all consequences, accept all burdens. Accept and work with it. Without it, there is no place for anyone to grow.
There is a lot for both of them to learn from each other.
This is what it means to allow growth and healing to take place.

The Embers of Us — Snippet
requested by @thelovelymadone
CW: REFERENCES TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE & CHILD ABUSE (below the cut)
✦ ✦ ✦
Eris’s breaths cloud with every exhale before dissolving into the early April air. The rising sun will peek above the feathered crowns of the fir trees lining the far side of the river any minute.
He’s twenty-nine today. A year from now he’ll be thirty.
If his twenty-year-old self could see him right now—still in Wyoming, still single, running Autumn Crest Ranch of all things—he’d think it was a nightmare come true. But Eris has learned to love this place.
It turns out that it wasn’t the ranch he hated; it wasn’t the small town that made him feel like the walls were closing in even under endlessly blue skies, it was his father. Beron Vanserra was the rot in the roots; a poison, slow and insidious in its creeping.
Eris ran off to Seattle for university when the chance presented itself. It had been a selfish choice, a desperate one if he’s being honest, but a choice that he loves and loathes with equal measure.
Those had been four years when he’d left his mother and brothers here under his father’s fist and unprotected. Those four years had also been the first time he’d felt truly alive—truly himself—for longer than a few stolen hours at a time.
Beron died when the ranch was about to go under three years prior. Eris thinks that if he didn’t have those precious few years to learn and live the way he wanted to, he would have failed his family when he inherited the ranch. Instead, he turned things around.
It is still a “working” ranch by all technical definitions but their cattle herd is mainly for show. After all, tourists come to Starlight Creek from all corners of the world to get an “authentic” experience at Autumn Crest Ranch.
Does it make him a sellout? Potentially. But Eris would rather take the judgemental looks from the other ranchers in the area than be unable to provide a comfortable life for his mother and brothers.
And there’s the added bonus of this: of the sun climbing and setting fire to the treetops, of Cinder and Vulcan chasing after a rabbit, of Candy’s warmth seeping through his jeans into his calves as they walked parallel to the gravelly river bank.
It’s these moments that fill him with an inundating sense of peace, of home, and Eris marvels that this is the same land he grew up on. In the absence of Beron’s shadow it’s a different world: one where his mother is often smiling and never concealing bruises, one where Lucien does his homework at the kitchen table and Maddox can read a novel in the living room instead of hiding away so as not to be noticed.
In this world, Eris flies a Pride flag right below Old Glory and flips the ground the finger whenever he leaves the house and sees it on the pole. He hopes his father is rolling over in his grave at the fact that his ranch is more successful in the hands of his bisexual son than it ever was when he was alive and throwing slurs at the TV whenever a man appeared on-screen that didn’t match his definition of the word.
In this world, Eris’s home and family are flourishing and he wakes up looking forward to the day ahead. When this is already so much more than he’d ever imagined for himself, what more could he want?

eluzriel | E | essentially pwp but there's some espionage and getting together
There are secrets Elain's lovers have been keeping from the rest of the Night Court, but some truths Elain simply didn't disclose that come to light during her first intercontinental spy mission to Rask - such as reaching a decision about maintaining casual relationships separately, or perhaps committing to something bigger.
When both Azriel and Lucien are sent after Elain to ensure her safety, everything comes out in the open.

“Our dove seems to have fluttered away.”
Azriel startles at the sound of Lucien’s voice. He whips around, hair an even more disheveled mess than he went to sleep with and eyes muzzy with sleep as he squints at his unexpected bedmate. It’s almost cute, how relaxed the spymaster has been, to not automatically note Lucien’s presence.
What’s not as cute is the lethal dagger Lucien knows is clutched in the Illyrian’s hands under his downy soft pillow, watches Azriel’s golden brown and black painted biceps ripple with a choice …
Azriel relaxes his hand and his arm and casually flips his hair from his eyes. “Where?” he asks succinctly, voice thick with sleep.
Lucien’s body melts back into the mattress — he hadn’t realized he’d been tensed for a fight — and he forces himself to look away from the undeniably attractive male before he gets carried away. He’d stirred before dawn to find Elain missing and Azriel still out cold. The bond had been dim, but full, a sure sign she was busy working.
The only one awake in the room, his thoughts quickly turned to the evening. Those thoughts took him to highs of arousals and lows of the uncertainty around the plethora of unanswered questions that still remain.
“Off to solve the world’s problems, I’m sure.”
“Brat,” Azriel huffs. “She didn’t have to lie about going back out.”
“You wouldn’t have been too distracted to enjoy last night’s activities if you were worried about mission prep?” He tries to keep any judgment from his tone, because Cauldron knows Lucien would have been challenged to pay attention knowing his mate could be facing potential danger.
Azriel stretches his wings lazily, uncaring that he cuts into Lucien’s space to do so. If Lucien isn’t confused, Azriel looks damn well relaxed.
“I guess,” he grunts his agreement, and then his cold hazel eyes slide to Lucien.
“You care for her deeply.”
“Of course. I know I was only a distraction to warm her bed at first, but I have tried …” His eyes squint against the vulnerability of what he's saying. To Lucien’s continued surprise, Azriel doesn’t back away from it. “I have tried to earn her affection beyond that.”
One uncomfortable truth for another then. “I can relate. Do you understand what it's like to try to prove yourself to a female who doesn't accept ‘Cauldron blessed fate’ as a good enough reason?”
Lucien laughs to himself, but he's unable to look elsewhere in the room. Unable to be torn from this male’s gaze that seems to be a beacon under the canopy of his stretched wings. It would be easier, to look away, to make the moment feel less exposing … But what they're sharing with each other in words, they’re also sharing by remaining in bed beside each other, as naked as when they'd fallen asleep in it.
Azriel’s shadows tuck and roll and twist atop their master’s wings, happy to have a barrier against Lucien and the power that always radiates around him like a second skin whether others can see it or not. They’re cutting shapes through the filtered morning light in their intimate space.
Outside of the intensity of the emotions running high the night before, Lucien feels a twist in his gut to be under that stare. Not only is Azriel intimidating as hell just from sheer body count, but his otherworldly beauty hadn’t been flattery but a true compliment.
Being naked under the same sheets as this male …
Only practice catching his breath after waking beside Elain has prepared Lucien for this moment.
It helps there isn’t a mating bond tying their instinctual sexual urges together.
“This is weird,” Azriel says, breaking the moment and angling onto his side so he can better assess Lucien. Wings folded back, his shadows eek around them to peer cautiously at Lucien in their wispy states.
Lucien shrugs. “I’ve woken up in odder configurations. This must be rather tame compared to the infamous youth you and your brothers shared?” Elain had told him this would be important, to assure Azriel.
A more detailed note would have been helpful, if Elain had planned to be away for a while though. He’s shooting from the hip when all his mind can focus on is the strain not to get an erection while Azriel continues to casually flex his powerful wings this way and that like a dog’s crooked ear. Morning light shines through the membranes like stained glass windowpanes of magenta and pink hues, some oranges and yellows.
Like his own personal sunrise.

I've always wondered about the shift in Elain and Lucien's relationship towards the end of ACOWAR and into ACOSAF. While it might seem like a retcon (which it was haha), upon my re-read, I noticed how short the span of time was.
Amidst the confusion of seeing Graysen enter the battle, fighting alongside the fae he once despised, a clear revelation emerged – love could indeed triumph over the mating bond.
Contrary to expectations, it wasn't Graysen who sought her out in the aftermath. Instead, it was Lucien.
Lucien, with urgency in his steps, ran towards her, expressing genuine concern for her well-being. Elain, reciprocating the concern, observed his bloodied state and asked if he was alright. In that moment, she smiled, recognizing the potential life she might have faced with Graysen. Following Lucien, peering into his face, she invited him to live in Velaris, seizing the opportunity for some much-needed alone time together.
The next day, with Lucien by her side, seeing Graysen collaborate with creatures they had committed to kill for the new treaty, Elain must have felt the weight of Lucien's low snarls and realized the true meaning of having a mate. Graysen's presence, contributing to the building of the new world, might have reignited Elain's hope of giving their relationship a chance, anticipating that Graysen, with this shift, might change his mind.
He left without a single word to her, and yet Lucien's decision to stay behind and help, despite the hatred towards his kind, conveys a profound message.
"He doesn't even know me," she said in ACOSAF.
So how could someone who didn't know her for long understand her better than someone she had planned to spend the rest of her life with? How could someone she'd been with for at least a year be surpassed in understanding by someone who knew her only a matter of weeks?

Jesus I need to vent because I saw someone say Eluciens are anti Elain because she is currently uncomfortable with Lucien.
And they were saying Feyre was right to be uncomfortable with Rhys at first because he was a villain and Nesta “never hated Cassian”. But that Elain is uncomfortable with Lucien because she doesn’t like him so that makes it different.
First of all how the fuck do you know WHY she is uncomfortable towards him and how does it make it different from her sisters? We don’t know a single thing that’s happening in her head but I can assure you, it’s not as simple as she doesn’t like him, and we have CANON evidence that she at least was curious and concerned about him, he even made her smile in a truly devastating moment.
She could be reluctant for so many reasons, his connection to her traumatic experience, her powers, wild attraction, guilt, anger, not wanting to let the mating bond win, fear, not wanting to commit to something so big again, fear of vulnerability, him seeing right through her façade, etc etc. As this person said Lucien isn’t a villain, but that doesn’t mean the only possible explanation is that she doesn’t like him.
AND WHY can’t I be a Pro Elain and a Pro Elucien just because Elain is “uncomfortable” with him right now, it doesn’t mean it’s because he disrespected her or did her wrong, the opposite is true actually, and also ELAIN IS NOT A REAL PERSON.
This take is so stupid, these are characters in a novel which hasn’t even finished yet. We do not know what Elain’s motive is, and if you believe its a simple as shes not attracted to him let me ask HAVE YOU READ ANY OF THESE BOOKS?
Being scrutinized for seeing her potential with the character she is reluctant about is like saying you are anti every single female character in a reluctant allies/enemies to lovers/arranged marriage trope because she is uncomfortable with them at first. Make it make sense.
The real Anti Elains are the ones who do not care about the character’s growth and arc, who are advocating for her to change her WHOLE personality and romanticizing the moments in which her wants and needs are not accounted for (like when certain characters speak on her behalf and limit her on things she explicitly said she wanted/didn’t want), and wanting her to stay put in a place where she is not valued as an individual. Thats an actual anti. Believing she could be happy if she got to know the goodest flaming red head in existance that happens to be her mate and that embodies all that her as a CHARACTER has been written to like and appreciate and who has never done wrong by her IS NOT.
Be fucking for real and get off that high horse.

Due Time (Part 2)
Eris x Reader
Summary: Anon Request: can we get a pt2 to due time with eris?
Warnings: None.
Word Count: 846
_________________________________________
As soon as he hears the beautiful cries of his daughter as she is welcomed into the world he knew two things:
That he’d lay down his life for her without a moment’s hesitation.
He had to kill his father.
He supposed he could get you and the babe out of the Autumn Court, but that could be a feat even more dangerous. A potential heir to the throne of fall raised in another.
His father would stop at nothing to ensure that his child was raised in the same way he was, and Eris was not about to let that happen.
He didn’t want that for her, he thought as he held her close, pressing promises into the tiny hairs on her head. He didn’t want that man anywhere near her.
“Do you have a name?” the nursemaid asks, tucking in the blankets around you as you watch your mate hold his daughter close for the first time.
Eris had been by your side the entire time. Neither of you had wanted any of the other family members around during the birth, opting to ward the room thrice over so that none of them could get in.
He’d wanted you to have the babe out at the Foxhole House, the home the two of you had built together, quiet and quaint like the life he’d always wanted, but it wasn’t an option as his father had far better care for you.
He was lucky that you were someone his father had at least approved of your courting, otherwise, things would be a lot more serious.
She was the same nurse that had patched him up as he grew. She patched up everything from his skinned knees to his more severe punishments from his father. He couldn’t think of anyone else he’d want to deliver his child.
He tears his eyes away from the sleeping babe in his arms to meet your soft, exhausted eyes. You nod to your mate and his heart aches in his chest, a small smile as he speaks softly, “Her name is Maude.”
She gives him an encouraging nod filled with pride and he has to blink back the tears from his eyes. Every female in this room has seen him go through so much, knows the real him, and he promises to his daughter that she will always know the true Eris Vanserra.
You invite his family against his wishes because they have to see the child at some point, but Eris keeps an eye glued to your daughter as the Lady of Autumn cries over her. Crying over the fact that there is finally a girl in the Vanserra family, and also crying because she knows that her husband would’ve been so harsh on a daughter of their own had they had one.
His dumber brothers make terrible jokes and he clutches your hand tighter with his own. He will never leave you or Maude alone with them as long as he lives, and he’s done an amazing job at doing just that.
He can see the ideas already brewing in his father’s eyes as he looks down at the tiny babe in his wife’s arms and Eris tenses, wants so badly to get his father out of here, get them all out of here. He feels like they’re already corrupting his daughter just by looking at her. He hates it, he hates them. He has to do something about this.
And as he looks around the room, at his parents, his surviving brothers, he can’t help the pang in his chest at his youngest of kin not being here for this moment. He is the only member of his family that he actually wants here, save for his mother, but Lucien can’t because of his Gods awful father.
You feel the twin pain in your own chest and run a soothing thumb over his hand, his amber eyes leaving your daughter quickly to catch the soft look on your face, letting him know that you understand what he’s feeling and giving him a subtle nod to let him know that Lucien will be meeting her soon.
Your daughter has some lungs on her and he knows that she is a force to be reckoned with. You take the crying babe into your arms as the nursemaid ushers the rest of the Vanserra family out of your chambers so that you can feed the child and get some rest.
He sits next to you, rubbing your daughter's head. He can’t get enough of her already and you know that it’s going to be hard to separate the pair, but you don’t mind. He loves the smell of her, the way she looks, the way she sounds, her eyes, a complete mirror of your own.
He lies his head on your shoulder and you lean against him, admiring the teeny babe in your arms.
“I promise I will protect you with my life,” he whispers down to her, and to you, a kiss on your temple, “The both of you.”
