Dons will represent Latvia at Eurovision with his song "Hollow."
The man has an absolutely stunning voice. The ballad has nice progression and dynamism. However, the production is a bit plodding and the subject matter is not something I find relatable. So, this one goes in the box of perfectly quality songs that just don't click with me at all.
The aforementioned subject matter is the concept of selling out, and how he would rather do his own thing than be bogged down by other's opinions. But like, he doesn't have some crazy unique sound or artistic vision to go with this statement. It's a very standard radio friendly ballad, and the staging at Supernova was uninteresting. I don't get the impression from this that he has much to lose if he did sell out. So without a personal story that's easily identifiable, or a relatable in-road to a general be yourself message, it just kind of comes across as overwrought to me.
This staging needs an overhaul.The blue short-sleeve jumpsuit is a decent alternative to the standard black suit most balladeers go for. But there is really not much going on here. A little bit of fog on the floor, cloud LEDs, and some light cues don't really bring the song home. I think this is one where I want a story. Words in the background giving context for hardships he's experienced in his career. Maybe something like what France did in 2019 where they invited a deaf dancer and a plus-sized dancer to highlight the way they had been marginalized but were still pursuing their dreams. I just need something that makes this song connect in a way that it hasn't yet.

Llega el final de la Supernova 2020 y con ella la elección de candidato para el Festival de Eurovision 2020 por parte de la LTV (televisión pública letona) donde finalmente la victoria ha sido para Samanta Tina y “Still Breathing”.

A snappy Vidbir Review

Hello spicy sisters!! We are quickly marching into our second ever Super Saturday of the 2022 season and oh my god I am not ready for this. Last week’s Supernova/X Factor Israel double watch was sure an emotional rollercoaster (i.e. sobbing at Raum’s lacking live while screaming at Michael Ben David’s win).
Today, I can’t wait to for... Supernova again! That is in 3 hours though, and I’ve made my stances on those entries. (BTW Coco’nuts robbed I will not forgive the LTV jury for this). So instead, let’s soapbox about the other NF I’m gonna watch - Vidbir!
I’ve heard good things about the annual Ukranian selection, and even with the absence of a production partner and a downscale of size, this edition still lives up to its predecessor’s reputation.
Let’s get the duds out of the way first. I love me a simple piano ballad (see: me suckering over Aminata last post), but I find there to be a stunning lack of wow factor in Barleben’s Hear My Words. As a last minute replacement for LAUD, the song fits right into the lineup, but just really lacks any excitement for me. Can’t exactly say I find any either in All Be Alright by Cloudless, which rings as a prodding rock song lacking any highs and lows.
Aaaaaaand that’s where my dislikes end, unimaginably saccharine gushing over the rest coming right up.
If you want some chill, groovy 80′s tunes that pull you into a world of driving down a vaporwave sunset street, then look no further than Our Atlantic’s Moia liubov. Admittedly, it took a little while to grow on me, but now I can recognise it for the absolute tune it is. If you want some club music about not forgetting one’s roots to dance to instead, Wellboy and his song Nozzy Bossy is right up your alley, and oh my god I did not expect this song to illuminate me with such sunshine.
Move over Cyndi Lauper, because ROXOLANA is giving “GIRLZZZZ just wanna have fun” a whole new meaning with her hypnotic house track. Before I’d listened to this, based off popular reception alone, I honestly imagined this to sound like a standard empowerment girlbop with a twist, and boy, oh boy was I glad I was proven wrong. It brings a refreshing, bouncy sound to the table which I really enjoy.
Belarusian NF alum Michael Soul also brings something similarly intriguing with his seven deadly sins inspired urban track Demons. Reminiscent of good job nicky (but like, not really?), this song features a haunting combo of Michael’s chilling falsetto vocals with very synth-y instrumentals, giving this song a very “you’re meeting a Bibical angel in front of a decrepit bar at 2am” vibe. Kinda crawls on your skin but hey, why not?
And finally, we cannot neglect to talk about the big hot favourites: Alina Pash with Tini zabutyh predkiv/Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, and Kalush Orchestra with Stefania.
Both songs share some commonalities that give them their well deserved hype: they both incorporate traditional Ukranian sound, they have lyrics in Ukranian, and they discuss our elders (Alina does this in a general sense while Kalush Orchestra sings about a mother, Stefania).
While I love both, what sets Alina’s song apart from Kalush Orchestra’s is her almost preacher like choral singing that sets a very grand tone for the song, giving a very #girlboss energy, if you may. Many have commented on the out-of-placeness of the English parts (especially the rap), but I feel that it works to Alina’s advantage: it makes the message universal and hence, cuts deeper at first glance. The rap does feel awkward on first listen, and some parts feel so heavy-handed that it kind of falls flat, but my ultimate judgement is: I have no choice but to stan.
That’s not to throw shade to Stefania though; it’s a very genius song. It blends electronic and traditional musical elements very well (fitting since Ihor from Go_A which also utilised that stylistic choice is also in Kalush Orchestra), pairing it with nostalgic vocals and powerful raps. This results in a song where you can feel the melancholic longing for the past and a sense of gratitude the vocalist has for his aging mother, something I’m sure a lot of us can relate to. Even if you don’t understand Ukranian, the “mamo, mamo” parts of the chorus is sure to invoke some underlying emotions within you.
And that’s it for Vidbir! It’s my first year watching so I am very excited for it. Very curious to see who wins and whether the show will live up to my very unrealistic expectations. Oh, and given the current... uhh imminent threat of doom in global affairs, I sincerely hope that every Ukranian feels safe and at peace, and that they can enjoy the show without fear and worry looming over them.
