#love marriage bangla movie

really love the blog it’s cool to see so many desi queer people, i just gotta say that from what I’ve seen on tumblr the desi queer scene (like many other things) tends to be heavily dominated by north indian hindi speaking folks. idk it just makes me really uncomfortable when all we can ever discuss is. “what if we shipped the two guys from this really misogynistic bollywood movie” “mahabharat but make it ✨gay” (as if making it #representation like some bloody anime erases a couple millennia of caste and gender based oppression) (also the fact that we’re not all hindu cough cough)
enjoying media is cool and all. great. you do you. idk this sounds whiny but it’s just really disappointing that we’re more focused on infighting and squabbling over which identity is which and which ship is valid and less on civil rights (and no i don’t mean gay marriage* for the love of fuck) (also whatever advocacy i do see is so overwhelmingly assimilationist oh my god)
*theres more nuance to this ofc but marriage still remains an overwhelmingly patriarchal and casteist institution particularly!!! in desi folks!!! and maybe we should question that a bit (ofc gay marriage should be legal but christ people are acting like that’s the be all end all of the rights we can have)
Oh god yes sometimes queer representations do get dominated by the north Indian hindu and hindi speaking people. But it's just a statistic game at this point. We do promote all kind of discussions that come our way and we see a lot of bangla and Tamil and marathi queer representation here within our community too as there are fair number of those people here. I have my own opinions on toxic movie shipping or Mahabharata shipping but i don't largely disagree with you.
Regarding queer rights... Yess, there are a lot more rights we as queer people need to fight for. The equality doesn't end, does not even begin at marriage equality. But in a society that places so much value on the patriarchal and casteist institution of marriage, having marriage equality is a far bigger win than it would ordinarily be. We do need to have amendments in existing anti discrimination acts to include queer people to prevent discrimination in employment or housing or adoption processes.
We should definitely have all these conversations. I definitely agree it's hard to have these conversations when all the other noise is way too much.
If you do come across unique or different queer media or any queer issue that needs attention, please come and share with us. Thank you for sharing what you feel with us. I hope you feel a little lighter now.

I'm open to all genres of shows and movies, I just wondered about anything other than English movies and shows.
I watch more foreign language films than I do foreign language shows so here's a list of a few films I've watched relatively recently:
Minari (2020) | Korean & English A Korean-American family seeks a better life and moves to Arkansas in hopes of developing a farm. A story of family, marriage, conflicting cultural values between those from the homeland and children of the diaspora, and the experience of being a working class immigrant in the United States.
Bulbbul (2020) | Hindi A girl in colonial West Bengal is married off to a wealthy man, but his youngest brother has her heart. Rumors of supernatural murders spread through the village. A thriller that marries Bengali culture and Shaktism with a feminist narrative, weaponizing a spin on tradition to challenge the mistreatment of women and girls.
Monpura (2009) | Bangla A servant takes the blame for a crime he did not commit and flees. Alone in rural Bangladesh, he falls in love with a fisherman's daughter. This one is a classic tragic Bengali romance, so I cried lol
Pather Panchali (1955) | Bangla Set in the 1910's, a family in rural Bengal struggles to make ends meet. When tragedy strikes, a monsoon of burden cascades on the family. A commentary on the ugly reality of poverty which starves people of opportunities and deprives them the ability to recover from life's trials.
Pelíšky / Cosy Dens (1999) | Czech Two families suffer political and social divisions in 1967 Czechoslovakia. A witty film depicting two fathers who constantly argue about communist and nationalist politics, youngsters who just want to be "cool" and whose parents don't understand, and the conflict that would later unite them in loneliness and sorrow with the rest of the nation.
Princess Mononoke (1997) | Japanese A village is attacked by a demon who is slain by a brave young warrior. He discovers his arm has been infected by a dark disease and embarks to find a cure. A fantasy anime film seeking to address the damage greed and industry cause to the environment which later comes back to punish us, as well as addressing other issues like women’s roles in society and stigmatized illness.
I have more but this is a solid list to start I think :)

S1 E4: Saucy Deep Dives: Third Person SIngular Number
After spending the last two months watching and examining Bollywood hits, it’s been very exciting for us to introduce our audience to hits from all across South Asia. In this episode, we are thrilled to be watching a Bangladeshi favorite made by one of the most famous contemporary directors there.
Mostofa Sarwar Farooki came into the scene in the early 2000s, at a time when mainstream television and cinema largely existed either in the form of family entertainment or copy-pasted “hero’s journey” scripts made for quick consumption.
This is where Farooki came in with his more casual and approachable filmmaking. His stories revolved around the relatable everyday struggles of ordinary people. This also meant utilizing colloquial language in his cinema (which was rare, given that the media at the time would only depict formal Bangla or a standard dialectical Bangla [for rural stories]).
Third Person Singular Number (2009) was Farooki’s third movie, which solidified his position as one of the most notable contemporary directors in Bangladesh.
Third Person Singular Number is conceptualized as a fairytale-like story of Ruba (played brilliantly by Nusrat Imroz Tisha, Farooki’s partner, and long-time muse), who is confronted by the challenges of being a single woman in South Asia, after her partner (note, not husband lol) is sent to jail. Ruba struggles with constant harassment as she attempts to find housing and employment. The Prince Charming character of this movie comes to us in the form of Ruba’s childhood friend - Topu (a successful musician in Bangladesh, both in the movie and IRL), whose support helps in making Ruba feel safe. Her feelings for Topu force Ruba to engage with her conflicted relationship with her mother (who left her father for her lover) as well as her fidelity to her jailed partner.
One of the most remarkable things about the film is its deliberate focus on Ruba and how it centers her perspective - this is extremely apparent in the cinematography and Farooki being able to employ the feminine gaze aptly. The first half of the movie depicts at length the various ways in which women become victims of sexual assault - be it at home, in public, or in professional spaces.
There's this one scene in particular, where Ruba becomes hesitant to go to the police station as she recalls a news story from a couple of weeks ago where a woman was r*ped at one. A male gaze retelling of this would tell the audience through action - a flashback where the woman is facing violence, or perhaps when Ruba was reading the paper, or conversing about it with someone. But in this story, Farooki chose to make this woman materialize in front of Ruba and tell the story herself. Not only giving voice to an unnamed woman who had met a horrible fate, but also creating a moment of emotional connection between the two women. It humanized what is often just reduced to news headlines, statistics, or water filter conversations. There are hints throughout that she is an unreliable narrator. Resulting in the (spoiler alert!) the fairytale-esque second half of the movie. Fairytales, historical romances, and fan-fictions often serve as great mediums for social commentary, particularly on the dynamics of power (esp. geared towards women). The fact that the only escape available to Ruba from her bleak reality is an absurd Prince Charming figure speaks heavily to the harsh reality of the real Rubas of the world. For them, her ending would not be a possibility.
The use of space in the visuals of the film was also noteworthy, with Ruba being shown to feel trapped or caged in the company of predatory men (even including her own partner, whom she feels stifled by later in the film). This is often done through the use of close and medium shots, along with physical obstructions in the shot. Meanwhile, her relationship with Topu is shown to be much more affectionate and easy-going; this is depicted with a wide shot of the beautiful kashbons of Bashundhara. Not only was this technique used to remark on the state of Ruba’s mind (which is rare given that male directors rarely highlight women’s perspectives), it also commentated on the wider issue of South Asian women and how they are often made to feel small and struggle to find space (be it physically or metaphorically).
This beautiful work with space is further used to remark on the silence of the other women in the film (notably, Ruba’s cousin, friend, and mother). Unlike Ruba, the only woman with a voice (and the narrator, of course), these women are often seen in the confines of layered cage-like homes (with distinct obstructions like columns, furniture, etc. present in every layer). These characters, like their real-life counterparts, often exist in the crevices of their own homes and are stifled by the domineering presence of the patriarchal structures and insecurities around them.
The two noteworthy women characters (aside from Ruba) are her cousin and her mother. Both of whom we know very little about. However, in their fleeting moments on the screen, some of them make attempts to defy patriarchal structures around them in small but significant ways – Ruba’s mother by being courageous enough to follow her heart and leave a marriage and her cousin by helping Ruba despite her mother-in-law’s objections.
Another interesting thing is that despite Topu being Prince Charming, his character was given depth by not making him entirely selfless and sacrificial. Topu’s expectations were conveyed to the audience in a subtle but effective manner, using scenes like his outrage in the forest after Ruba backs out of having sex with him (though sex was never mentioned, only alluded to), as well as the ever-awkward buying condoms at a chemist shop (an entirely silent and secretive transaction, btw).
Ruba’s character in the film is shown to be determined, independent and tenacious even while she struggles with the oppressive realities of being a woman under patriarchy. One of the focal points of the movie is her strained relationship with her mother (who passes away, leaving no possibility of redemption or reconciliation ). The film uses an interesting technique of showing Ruba’s internal demons manifesting as younger versions of herself, hypothesized to be metaphors for her id (6-year-old Ruba), ego (present Ruba), and superego (13-year-old Ruba) as she battles over her feelings for Topu and consequently her feelings of resentment for her mother. Though her relationship with her mother is significant to Ruba’s evolution as a character, very little is shown of her mother and her motivations. Despite trying to give Ruba some semblance of closure with her mother at the end, the film falls short in creating multiple well-written women to enhance the story and the emotional connection to the characters.
We’ve also had the pleasure of having Raidah of Raidahcal on this episode. She does wonderful work addressing contemporary feminist issues in Dhaka, Bangladesh. While we all had different takes on the movie, it was wonderful to have Raidah’s unique insights and perspectives. Be sure to check her out. We’ve also had the pleasure of collaborating with her on her podcast Raidahcal in an episode exploring feminist economics – we would love for you to check it out as well!
She also asked us a question that made us pause a bit: Why are men given passes for not portraying women's realities accurately just because they are creating sophisticated art?
And this made us realize that there is a very thin line between centering a woman's perspective in a film, versus presenting an intrusively voyeuristic gaze to watch her struggle. Ultimately if the author of the art is not able to distinguish the two for everyone watching the movie, is all that nuance pointless? This ambiguity within the film became more clear to us as we left our own echo chambers and were faced with a wonderfully challenging guest and the realization that the film is sometimes as good as the viewer wants it to be.
Even on our Sauce Meter, this film fared better than some of our previous takes. Here’s a breakdown of our scores.
1. Is there at least one character who adds a nuanced representation of a diverse South Asian identity, without stereotyping and tokenization?
Ruba, the protagonist of the film is a complex, well-rounded character and a woman – the film also uses an unfamiliar perspective by centering the story around the experiences of a woman vs a man (which is considered the default) – but she is one of the few non-male characters that get significant screen time, so not full points.
0.5
2. Are the primary characters (especially women and marginalized characters) portrayed with agency, individuality, and motivation?
Despite Ruba being limited by the sexist nature of the social structures around her – notably her struggle to find housing and employment as a single woman, she is shown to have agency and individual motivation – she is also shown to want autonomy and finds ways to assert herself despite inhibiting circumstances.
0.75
3. Are women and marginalized characters shown to be cognizant of their identities and how they exist within the social context?
Taking half a point off because there are limited representations of women and other marginalized characters, but the glimpses we get into other women apart from Ruba all seem to be painfully aware of how their choices and abilities are limited by oppressive patriarchal structures. Notably, her cousin despite having limited control over her life and household still tries to help Ruba, and Ruba herself has several moments where she points to the tribulations of being a woman in society.
0.5
4. Do the women and marginalized characters have meaningful relationships with each other?
While the women’s relationships with each other are not given a lot of screen time, they remain focal plot points. In particular, Ruba’s relationship with her mother is instrumental in the evolution of Ruba’s character and arguably even her liberation, however, the movie does not do these relationships complete justice and dedicates very little time to other women or marginalized characters in the movie.
0.25
5. Does it challenge any flawed notions upheld by capitalism, patriarchy, and the caste system?
The movie successfully subverts stereotypical representations of women and even defies traditional ideas of marriage and power dynamics between men and women and for that, it gets a full point!
1
TOTAL SCORE ON THE SAUCE METER: 3/5

The film was inspired by the Balaji Sakthivel directed Tamil film Kaadhal. This is a quite similar tragic real life love story of the Priyanka-Rizwanur angle begins and ends with a rich girl marrying a poor boy much against her family’s wishes.
Krishna (Rahul Banerjee) is a diligent scooter mechanic in Siliguri and life goes on smoothly for the young man till the rich schoolgirl Pallavi (Priyanka Sarkar) sets her eyes on him. The infatuation reaches dangerous levels when she coaxes Krishna to take her away from the clutches of her family, which has other plans about her future. The tone is set right from the start as instead of beginning with the two young lovers meeting, falling in love and then eloping, the film begins with the elopement, as Pallavi steps out of her house in her school uniform, leaving behind even her wrist watch behind since Krishna has instructed her not to take a single thing with her. The two rush into a shopping mall where Pallavi hurriedly changes into a young boy’s shirt, pants and cap, leaves her uniform behind and the two board the bus.

The flashback, as point-of-view narrations, between Pallavi and Krishna, are intercut with Pallavi’s don-like father and uncle terrorizing the neighbourhood in search of the truant girl. The naïve Krishna hesitantly yields to her charm and the two run away to Kolkata. Krishna's friend Ali (Rudranil Ghosh) helps them in the hour of crisis and the lovers unite in marriage. The couple consummates their union while the mess chaps hastily organize a proper wedding and elaborate reception in their own style. But her family is not going to give up so easily on the daughter they dote on. The family tracks down the couple that has eloped and eventually separates them. Pallavi agrees to marry another man in order to save Krishna's life after he is being beaten by her father. While she believes this decision is best and moves on with her life, she one day while on the road with her husband and daughter runs into Krishna who was suffered permanent brain damage from his beating.

Ben is back on the market: Affleck and Shookus split again
Ben is back on the market: Affleck and Shookus split again Ben is back on the market: Affleck and Shookus split again https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Ben Affleck has called it quits once again with his on/off girlfriend Lindsay Shookus, according to multiple reports.
The Justice League star had reconciled with the Saturday Night Live producer in February, and made their reunion official by hitting the red carpet together last month at the New York premiere of his movie Triple Frontier.
However, it appears the couple has split for a second time after struggling to maintain the romance between Lindsay’s base in New York, where she shares custody of her daughter with ex-husband Kevin Miller, and Ben’s home in Los Angeles.
Affleck’s ex Shauna Sexton spills on dating older men
'I HAD A PROBLEM': Ben Affleck says alcoholism 'is part of my life'
Saturday with the exes: Ben Affleck meets up with Lindsay Shookus AND Jen Garner
“She has a kid and an ex-husband and a job in New York and Ben has his family and a job in L.A., and while they love and respect each other, they just realized it wasn’t going to work,” a source tells People.com. “They really gave it another solid try.”
And it seems they remain on good terms following the break-up: “They will always have love for each other,” the insider adds.
Ben, 46, and Lindsay, 38, first began dating in the summer of 2017, in the actor’s first serious romance since ending his marriage with Jennifer Garner, the mother of his three children.
They were together for a year until August 2018, shortly before Ben checked into a rehabilitation facility to address his alcohol issues.
He went on to enjoy a fling with Playboy model Shauna Sexton, even whisking her off to Montana for a weekend getaway in early October, although they ended up splitting days later as the actor/director continued to work on his sobriety.

Amber Heard details alleged Johnny Depp attacks in response to lawsuit
Amber Heard details alleged Johnny Depp attacks in response to lawsuit Amber Heard details alleged Johnny Depp attacks in response to lawsuit https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Responding to his $50 million defamation case against her, the actress, who was married to the Pirates of the Caribbean star for 15 months before she filed for divorce in May, 2016, claims Depp repeatedly hit her, ripped out her hair, and almost suffocated her.
Depp filed his suit earlier this year, revealing he took offence to a piece Heard wrote for The Washington Post, in which she described being the victim of domestic abuse.
She did not mention her ex by name, but he claimed she insinuated he was the abuser, insisting Heard’s allegations were “a hoax”.
Heard, 32, has now responded by going into lengthy details about the former couple’s alleged fights in court papers exclusively obtained by the New York Post.

“About a year into our relationship, I began to witness Johnny abusing drugs and alcohol…,” she writes. “On some occasions, when Johnny simultaneously used both illegal narcotics and prescription medications I have had to get him medical attention (sic).
“Whenever he was using, I worried for both of us. He would become a totally different person, often delusional and violent. We called that version of Johnny, ‘the Monster’.”
Heard went on to claim her ex would often “not remember his delusional and violent conduct after he came out of his drunk or medicated states”, adding, “Because I loved Johnny, I had believed his multiple promises that he could and would get better. I was wrong.”
Recalling a private jet flight from Boston to Los Angeles in May, 2014, the actress claims Depp appeared to be drunk.
“On the flight, Johnny ordered the flight attendants to give him an oxygen tank, and drank heavily,” she writes. “Johnny’s handlers told me that he was upset that I was filming a movie with a romantic scene with James Franco the day before.
“Soon, Johnny began to throw objects at me. Instead of reacting to his behavior, I simply moved seats. That didn’t stop him. He provocatively pushed a chair at me as I walked by, yelled at me, and taunted me by yelling out the name ‘James Franco’.
“At some point, I stood up, and Johnny kicked me in the back, causing me to fall over. Johnny threw his boot at me while I was on the ground. Johnny continued to scream obscenities until he went into the plane bathroom and passed out locked in the bathroom for the remainder of the flight.”
He allegedly apologized later via text, writing: “Once again, I find myself in a place of shame and regret. Of course, I am sorry. I really don’t know why or what happened. But I will never do it again.
“My illness somehow crept up and grabbed me… I must get better… Again, I am so sorry, so sorry… I love you and I feel so bad for letting you down.”
Heard goes on to claim she locked herself in a room a month into the marriage, during a heated argument with her husband over his alleged use of the drug ecstasy during a bender in Australia.
“The argument heated up, and Johnny pushed me, slapped me, and shoved me to the ground before I retreated to a locked bedroom,” she writes. “(The next morning) I went downstairs to find that Johnny was still awake, and that he had stayed up all night, having taken about eight MDMA pills. He was also drinking again. We got into a fight that Johnny made physical, and I barricaded myself in one of the rooms. That didn’t stop Johnny from busting through the door of the room I was in…”
Heard alleges the incident dragged on and left her completely terrified: “In one of the most horrific and scariest moments of this three-day ordeal, Johnny grabbed me by the neck and collarbone and slammed me against the countertop,” she states. “I struggled to stand up as he strangled me, but my arms and feet kept slipping and sliding on to the spilled alcohol and were dragged against the broken glass on the countertop and floor, which repeatedly slashed my feet and arms.
“Scared for my life, I told Johnny, ‘You are hurting me and cutting me’. Johnny ignored me, continuing to hit me with the back of one closed hand, and slamming a hard plastic phone against a wall with his other until it was smashed into smithereens. While he was smashing the phone, Johnny severely injured his finger, cutting off the tip of it… Once I was able to get away, I barricaded myself in an upstairs bedroom.”
Depp, she claims, was hospitalized for his finger injury, while she states she was left with “a busted lip, a swollen nose, and cuts all over my body,” adding, “I still have scars on my arms and feet from this incident.”

In the new court filing, Heard also claims she lashed out at Depp in March 2015 because she feared he was about to attack her sister, Whitney, and Johnny “picked a fight with me” during a trip to Thailand and Malaysia in August, 2015, adding, “While on the Eastern Oriental train… he started hitting and pushing me against a wall by grasping my throat and holding me there. I remember being afraid that Johnny might not know when to stop, and that he might kill me.”
There were other alleged violent moments in December, 2015, and Heard resolved to leave Depp for good and filed a request for a domestic violence restraining order after he allegedly attacked her in May, 2016, when he allegedly threw a phone in her face “as hard as he could”.
“Johnny grabbed my hair and started to slap, shake and yank me around the room while I continued to scream,” she states.
Depp and his representatives have yet to respond to his ex-wife’s latest filing, but in his defamation lawsuit, his lawyers declared: “Mr. Depp never abused Ms. Heard. Her allegations against him were false when they were made in 2016. They were part of an elaborate hoax to generate positive publicity for Ms. Heard and advance her career.”

Comic Chris Rock poked fun at Empire star Jussie Smollett while presenting an award at the NAACP Image Awards Saturday night.
“They said no Jussie Smollett jokes,” Rock told the audience at the ceremony, eliciting laughs from the crowd.
“Yeah, I know, but what a waste of light skin. Do you know what I could do with that light skin? That curly hair? My career would be out of here. I would be f—ing running Hollywood.”
He goes on to say, “You’re ‘Jessie’ from now on, you don’t get the ‘u’ no more. That ‘u’ was respect, you ain’t getting no respect from me.”

Smollett, who was recently arrested for disorderly conduct in Chicago after allegedly staging and reporting a fake assault, he was a no-show at the event, despite being nominated for best supporting actor in a drama series.
Though he was charged earlier this month on several felony counts, the charges were dropped last week and his record wiped clean.
Ironically, Smollett ended up losing to Jessie; Jessie Williams won for his work on Grey’s Anatomy.

Celebrities flock to India for extravagant wedding of billionaires’ children
Celebrities flock to India for extravagant wedding of billionaires’ children Celebrities flock to India for extravagant wedding of billionaires’ children https://ift.tt/2Bbwb8q
NEW DELHI — In a season of big Indian weddings, the Wednesday marriage of the scions of two billionaire families might be the biggest of them all.
The bride, Isha Ambani, is the Ivy League-educated daughter of industrialist Mukesh Ambani, thought to be India’s richest man. Forbes estimates his net worth at over $43 billion.
The groom, Anand Piramal, is the relative pauper. His father, industrialist Ajay Piramal, is thought to be worth $10 billion.
The wedding is being held in Mumbai on Wednesday but festivities began weeks ago, starting in September with an engagement party at a lakeside Italian palace. Over the weekend, thousands attended pre-wedding parties at a 16th century palace in the Indian desert city of Udaipur, where videos shot by partiers showed Hillary Clinton dancing with Shah Rukh Khan, one of India’s biggest movie stars, as former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry danced just a few feet away.
In this Sunday, Dec. 9, 2018 handout photo released by Reliance Industries Limited, former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stands and Nita Ambani, right, visit a curated showcase of traditional Indian crafts and art forms on display ahead of the wedding of Isha Ambani, left, in Udaipur, India. A highlight was a performance by Beyonce, who sang “Crazy In Love,” among other hits, with a band backing her up and a series of costume changes that included at least one India-inspired outfit.
“Beyonce Lights Up Udaipur,” the Times of India shouted in a Tuesday headline.
Indian weddings are famously elaborate, driving many families into debt with expectations that they invite hundreds or thousands of people, and arranging professional song-and-dance shows.
Among India’s rich, weddings are displays of almost unimaginable wealth, with guests flown in on chartered jets from around the world and celebrities paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for brief appearances. In 2004, a daughter of Indian steel baron Lakshmi Mittal held her engagement party at Versailles.

The Indian media noted that the actual Ambani wedding, in Mumbai, was expected to be a relatively small affair, with just 600 or so people in attendance. More parties will follow the marriage ceremony.
Antilla, the Ambanis’ 27-story Mumbai home, has been strung with lights for the wedding, looking like a small skyscraper at night. The family is said to have reserved hundreds of hotel rooms for their guests.
Indian grooms traditionally ride to their weddings on horses, but Piramal arrived at the Ambani home in a classic Rolls Royce, with marching bands playing alongside.
The Ambani fortune stretches across a range of industries, from petroleum to chemicals to mobile phones. They control the conglomerate Reliance Industries. The Piramal family businesses include pharmaceuticals and real estate.
The competitiveness of India’s wintertime wedding season is growing more extreme, according to Archana Dalmia, a social activist in New Delhi.
“A farmer might commit suicide because he can’t save enough money to get his daughter married,” she said.
The extravagant wedding of Indian actress Priyanka Chopra and American singer Nick Jonas earlier this month — attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi — was straight out of a Bollywood film.

So-called dowry deaths — brides killed when their families fail to meet in-laws’ dowry demands — constitute a substantial share of all female homicides in India, a 2018 United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime report found.
While opulence has always been a feature of Indian weddings, families used to hand down bridal saris as heirlooms. No more, Dalmia said.
“This generation is very different. Priyanka Chopra will never be able to wear it again and she won’t be able to pass it down,” Dalmia said.
