The Ruling Princes and Princesses of Dorne
Leaders During the Unification with the Iron Throne
Aliandra Nymeros Martell - Nora Attal
Qyle Nymeros Martell - Marwan Kenzari
there’s two potential candidates for who the prince of sunspear was during daeron i’s war so I included both of them because it made the number even.
Qyle, Aliandra’s younger brother, is one of those candidates, because we don’t know if Aliandra ever had children
Qyle would have been a bit older by the submission of sunspear which is why I went with Marwain Kenzari
Marence Nymeros Martell - Rayane Allali
Elio and Linda give Maron and Myriah’s father the name “Marence” in the game Blood of Dragons.
It’s only semi canonical though and it should be noted that we don’t know how he’s related to Aliandra.
More on all that in my “who the hell is maron and myriah’s father” meta.
If Marence is Aliandra (or Qyle)’s son, he likely would have been a bit young when Daeron’s war starts so I went with a younger face for him
Maron Nymeros Martell - Tahar Rahim
Maelor Nymeros Martell - Fu'ad Aït Aattou
I specifically looked for a mixed model for this one, and Fu’ad is French and Moroccan.
Now, obviously Maelor is a Valyrian name, but it’s close to a Dornish one as well - Mallor.
I thought, given how much Maron is said to love Daenerys as well as the story Doran tells of Daenerys teaching her son how to rule, that Daenerys had a heavy hand in raising him and perhaps in naming him as well, something virtually no other lady has control over in the series
Hence, Maelor - it sounds like Baelor, it’s a less common Valyrian name, but it sounds Dornish enough as well. Kind of a meeting of both cultures, just like their son would be.
Loreza Nymeros Martell - Leila Bekhti.
This meta here lays out why Loreza is likely her name but to sum up:
Oberyn is clearly trying to reunite his family through the names of his children with Ellaria. Elia, Obella for himself, Doreah for Doran, and Loreza probably for his mother.
Doran Nymeros Martell - Alexander Siddig
Can you believe they wasted the perfect casting choice on that nonsense?
Arianne Nymeros Martell - May Elghety

What if Elia and Doran were age swapped?
Elia is the heiress to Sunspear and Dorne.
She is educated to rule. Who she marries will be Prince consort of Dorne. In any marriage negotiations, she is the best party. As future ruler of Dorne, she cannot marry another kingdom's heir because that would mean political fusion of two kingdoms. She can marry a second or third-born son of a Great house at most, though that is very unlikely (Ned and Cat only happened because of the Southron ambitions).
It becomes highly unlikely Elia marries Rhaegar, as he is crown prince. It would mean a stronger grip by the Targaryens on Dorne, and that the line of succession of Dorne passes on to the Targaryens, possibly handing actual administration and ruling of Dorne to the Targaryens/the Iron Throne, with no ruling from Sunpear (maybe a regional governor which executes the Iron Throne's wishes). If she somehow marries Rhaegar (say the Targaryens were desperate because they couldn't find a spouse with "dragonblood"), then the unnamed Princess of Dorne has the upper hand and can impose her conditions. To prevent Dorne's assimilation into the Iron Throne, she would likely repeat the conditions agreed upon for Myriah Martell's betrothal to the future Daeron II: although Myriah is older than Maron and was meant to inherit Dorne, Maron did and it is his line that succeeded. The Targaryen line from Myriah and Daeron II has no right when it comes to the Dornish line of succession.
In this scenario, Elia is also over a decade older than Rhaegar which means that she would be considered being closer towards the end of her childbearing years and potentially having more difficulty to conceive. However, 1) bringing child(ren) into the world is one of the main "duties" of a woman when she marries into the ruling house 2) even more so when the Targaryen line is in decline (the initial reason the Targaryens seeked a wife for Rhaegar far and wide). Her being older further means she can already be married by the time Rhaegar is of age. And even if she isn't, there is no reason for the unnamed Princess of Dorne to want to marry her firstborn to Rhaegar and change everything so Elia can marry him/lose her right to Sunspear and hand it to Doran who is younger and therefore less experienced by that time.
Doran is living a secondborn child life. He can marry who he pleases if no arrangement has been made by his mother before. He can be a counsellor to Elia, ruling Princess. He can live without grieving Elia or hatching a plan against the Lannisters.
By the time ASOIAF starts, Dorne is not eaten by a "vengeance, justice, fire and blood" mantra. The whole Dornish plot as we know it does not exist.
It is not clear if Lewyn joined the Kingsguard as part of the agreement for Elia's betrothal to Rhaegar or if he was a Kingsguard before. If he was already a Kingsguard, then he ends up fighting for the Targaryens during Robert's Rebellion because it is his duty. If not and only joined the Kingsguard in relation to Elia's betrothal, then in the scenario of Elia and Doran's ages were swapped, he is not a Kingsguard and he can be living his life in Dorne as knight.

Etymology of the Martell and Sand’s Names
Doran, Dorea: Doran is an Irish and Gaelic name that means "fist, stranger, exile." It could also be an invented masculine version of the name Dora, which derivated from the Greek word doron (gift, freely given, without cost). Dorea was probably named after him.
Mellario: her name is an actual Latin adjective derivated from the word mellarius (of honey, related to honey, beekeeper).
Arianne: a variation of Ariana, which itself is a latinized version of the Greek name Ariadne (most holy). In Greek mythology Ariadne was the granddaughter of the sun god Helios, helped Theseus escape the labyrinth by giving him thread and married Dionysus, the god of grape-harvest, winemaking, orchards and fruit, fertility and festivity.
Quentyn: misspelling of Quentin, a French name derivated from the Latin name Quintinus (the fifth).
Trystane: misspelling of Trystan, a Welsh name that derivated from the French word triste (sad, sorrowful).
Elia: probably after the sun god Helios in Greek mythology or a shortening of the Late Latin name Aeliāna, the feminine form of Aeliānus (of the sun). It could also be a shortening of the Hebrew name Eliana (my God answered me, God answered my prayer) or a misspelling of the Old German name Ellia (other, foreign).
Oberyn, Obara, Obella: Oberyn is probably a misspelling of Oberon, the fairy king from from A Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare. The name Oberon is derived from the Old High German name Alberich, composed by the words alb (elf) and rih (ruler, king). Obara is probably named after him, unless she’s named after obara, the Slovene meat and vegetable stew that was usually prepared for celebrations. Same with Obella, unless her name is a misspelling of Abella, which comes from the Hebrew name Abel (breath, vapor).
Ellaria: could be a misspelling of the Hebrew name Elliora (God is my light) or the Old English name Ellerey or Elleree (alder tree).
Nymeria: probably an invented name compounded by the Greek word nymphe (young woman, bride, young wife) and the Greek name Maria, which derivated from the Roman surname Marius and could come from Mars the war god, maris (male) or mare (sea). Maria could also derivate from the Hebrew name Myriam (rebellious) which once was mistranslated to Latin as Maryam (drop of the sea). It could also be a misspelling of the Greek name Nereides (clear, unmistakable, true) which is also the patronymic of fifty sea nymphs that accompany Poseidon, god of the sea, and often help sailors in Greek mythology. It could also be delivered from the Arabic noun nimer (tiger) but I don't think it very likely.
Tyene: could be a misspelling of Tine or Tinah, both variations of Tina, which itself derivated from the shortened version of Latin female names like Bettina (diminutive of Elizabeth (God is my oath, God’s promise), Christina (follower of Christ), Constantina (constant, steadfast), Martina (follower of Mars) or Valentina (strong, healthy). It could also be a misspelling of thyme or of the Spanish verb tiene (he/she has).
Sarella: probably a misspelling of Sarah, an Hebrew name derived from the word sar (chief, ruler, prince), with the female suffix ella added at the end.
Loreza: either a misspelling of Lorenza or Lorena, both derivated from the Latin surname Laurentius which derivated from the noun laurus (laurel, laurel tree).

is it okay that this lady is in the dead ladies club?
i simply wanted the excuse to talk about the moms. i'm not including ashara, elia, or lyanna in this, because the last two are plot relevant deaths and ashara's is left purposefully mysterious I think because we are going to get some sort of answer there (not even implying "lemore is ashara" here, i think the fact that we have conflicting info on her does mean something about her baby being relevant to the tower of joy, which means howland or bran/the weirwood hivemind are going to reveal that to us. will it be a huge reveal that shakes the earth? i mean, probably not, but i do think it will be relevant).
let’s gooo-
joanna lannister is a dead mom with some narrative weight to her. all three lannisters think about how different their lives might have been, define themselves by the gaping absence of her in their life, and the fact that jaime commits more violence in the riverlands, convinces himself it’s a job well done, and of all people it’s his MOTHER who comes to him in a dream just to be like “this is your conscious speaking, you’re a fucking idiot get your life together dude,” you really feel that this is a family that was wrecked by the loss of their mother at a young age. it Is noticeable that we don’t get much of an idea of her personality compared to the men tho.
can she stay in the dead ladies club? yes, i think this is a well thought out dead mom, i simply wish she had slightly more characterization than “loving mom & wife.”
minisa whent gets less characterization, i think bc we only have cat as insight into her, so i can sort of forgive that, esp since i do think it’s noticeable that for all cat is really fuckijg busy most of the time, she does think about her mother and wonder if she would have been happier with her mother around. lysa & edmure only get to be Like That because they really had no adult taking care of them except cat who was still all but a child herself, so you can feel minisa’s absence in the characterization of her children and the damage her death did to the tully siblings.
can she stay in the dead ladies club? yes, i think this is a well thought out dead mom, although once again i wish we had the opportunity to get information on the type of person she was outside of "loving mother." i do think that minisa and joanna are meant to mirror each other in this way though - they died so young that they are forever frozen in the minds of their children as these paragons of goodness, as a reminder of where their lives went wrong, and what might have happened if things had been a little less sad for them.
what’s interesting about loreza nymeros martell is that we don’t even know what her actual name IS or her age or when she died AND YET despite how little time we spend with characters that knew her, Doran names her as an influence on him and quotes her, and this scene - “this is your kingdom” in the water gardens - is usually pointed to as one of those scenes that are The Point Of The Series. the writing around her is certainly clunky but at least you can tell there was thought put into the kind of person doran’s mother was and how she might have influenced doran's life. i also think it's notable here that we know she was up to things besides giving birth - she was a lady at court, she was friendly with joanna and rhaella, she was attempting to engage her kids to non dornish lords so she was clearly very pro-Dorne Being Involved as opposed to having an isolationist bent. we know a decent amount about her personality, and we don't even know who she marries, which is honestly kind of funny - so many of these characters only think about their fathers yet doran only thinks of his mother.
can she stay in the dead ladies club? yes, but we are deducting points for not having arianne think about her at all and also still not knowing her name.
cassana eastermont is a question mark but to be fair,,,,,so is steffon and that is kind of the point of both of them. cassana and steffon were at court, and then died, so like the other siblings of this era, the baratheon boys grew up Without An Adult In The Room except for Maester Cressen. the tragedy of Cressen being helpless to keep his boys together, and dying in a vain attempt to save what’s left of stannis and renly’s souls, it doesn’t really work if any of them have a lot of fond memories that they dwell over of cassana or steffon. and no one has any real idea how aware steffon was of the whisperings of rebellion against aerys because they’re so absent from the narrative, it’s funny that their son then became the face of that rebellion despite steffon’s targaryen mother. BUT. yeah it does objectively suck that we don’t know what cassana was up to before she had her first baby and then she dies, bc at least we know steffon was alive and doing shit, we’re just fuzzy on what. cassana begins and ends as a wife and mother, that really sucks and i wish we had gotten a single person throwaway commenting about her.
can she stay in the dead ladies club? yes, but i think if we had some throwaway lines about her, as an example, fostering at Storm's End so Rhaelle had some female company (since she had no daughters, and only the one son) and her and Steffon met and married that way, so that we know she existed before becoming a mother.
rhaella targaryen is an interesting example because we not only have several characters who remark on her and knew her, we actually get a significant amount of characterization for her. she was clearly romantic enough to entertain fantasies of running off with bonifer hasty and yet pragmatic enough to not pull a stunt like that. "mindful of her duty" as it's put, but also rebelling against her brother-husband in ways by being openly kind to rhaegar and embracing rhaenys and elia. stubborn enough to crown viserys on dragonstone. a loving mother whose loss broke viserys' mind. but...like did she have to die in childbirth? did daenerys have to have no memories of her whatsoever? would it not have been perfectly within the plot george wanted if rhaella and ser willem darry were with her, and died of a fever at the same time?
can she stay in the dead ladies club? no, i think it's really annoying and dumb that rhaella dies on dragonstone giving birth to dany. i dont think it changes the plot in any way if rhaella had stayed alive for four or five years after dany's birth, and if dany thought about her mother from time to time. it is honestly one of the my Main quibbles with this series, that dany never thinks about the women in her family when she thinks of leaders and rulers, only the men.
lyarra stark is in my opinion the most egregious example of a woman in the dead ladies club. no personality, no in canon mentions of her, no idea when she dies, george didn't even think about her until twoiaf. there were theories and mystery surrounding her and the answer was "george did not think she was relevant" and it sure is fun and intersting to look at which dead characters are irrelevant and which ones get characterization (see comments about steffon vs cassana). i get wanting most of the grandparents to be dead by the end of robert's rebellion - a lot of the point is that the sets of siblings from the rebellion era are very isolated from their childhoods, signified by the losses of their parents and especially their mothers (as motherhood and childhood are kind of intrinsically linked together). but why did she have to die before the rebellion? why does ned never once think about her? why must it always be the mother who is inconsequential while the father makes history? to throw george's own words at him, the woman is important too!
can she stay in the dead ladies club? no, there's just no reason why she couldn't have lived to the rebellion, been the Stark in Winterfell alongside Benjen, and died during the war, either of grief, shock, or potentially even after an attempt at finding lyanna herself goes awry.

Eight daughters of Oberyn Martell
Tumblr media
Since we know quite a lot about the older four snakes, my couple of headcanons are dedicated to Ellaria's girls.
Elia is commonly known as Lady Lance due to her weapon of choice, although her family mostly calls her El. It is said that her wild personality is the dangerous mix of House Uller's infamous madness and Oberyn's own proneness to trouble. It is, most likely, the reason why she is the favourite Sand Snake of the inhabitants of Hellholt. Elia is brash, cocky and adventurous. She loves travelling no less than her father does and dreams of visiting all the places he told her about. Elia styles herself simply and comfortably. Her enormous love for horse riding and jousting usually results in her looking like a sweating mess and smelling like a horse, which Ellaria tries to fix without much success. Oberyn jokes that Elia would prefer to live in the stables rather than in one of the palace rooms. She is the most capable fighter among Ellaria's daughters and a splendid swimmer. Her activities sometimes lead to her getting hurt, but Elia is very careless when it comes to injuries. She worships her older sisters, particularly Obara.
Obella is sometimes compared to her sister Tyene when it comes to the softness of their demeanor, but while Tyene's angelic face hides her deadliness, Obella's innocence is genuine. The influence of her sisters does awake her own mischievous side at times, but timidness and preference for solitude are more characteristic of her personality. These traits are what she has in common with her cousin Quentyn, and her company is the least burdening for him among the Sand Snakes. Obella looks the most like her aunt Elia out of her generation, and Oberyn happens to rant about naming the wrong daughter after his sister. She has a collection of different accessories that she wears daily, some of them are Oberyn's gifts from foreign lands. Obella prefers a bow to other kinds of weapons (although she never actually uses it for hunting), but she still carries a knife for the sake of self-defence. Her inclinations are more peaceful than those of her sisters: she enjoys reading and playing musical instruments. Obella is very close to her mother.
Dorea got her name in honour of her uncle Doran, who in turn was named after his paternal grandmother, Dorleen Toland. Much like her mother and sister Obella, she enjoys dressing beautifully and chooses the colours of her parents' houses most often. Dorea is easy-going and as prone to causing trouble as the majority of her older sisters. Both she and Loreza are known to be good at dancing. Her weapon of choice is a morningstar, which she sometimes uses to knock her beloved oranges, pomegranates and lemons off the trees. Dorea is sociable and has a honeyed tongue that, along with her charming smiles, make it easy to like her company. However, her subtle and cunning personality, integral part of her pleasant public persona, as well as the interest in political intrigues that she grew up around in Sunspear, also make her a potentially important figure in the Dornish court. According to her family, Dorea inherited it from her uncle along with the name. Despite her bastardy, there were a couple of men of high station who offered her marriage.
Loreza, affectionately nicknamed Loree by her family members, fully inherited her parents' flirtatious nature. She is amorous and therefore known to have quite a number of relationships. Piquant Dornish wine is her favourite drink since her very youth, and she drinks it regularly in small quantities for the sake of pleasure. In terms of looks, Loreza is the spitting image of Ellaria with Oberyn's viper eyes. She is good at sewing and finds the occupation relaxing. Most of the simple yet pretty dresses she wears are actually the products of her own work. In the same time, she uses her dagger no less skillfully than she does her needle, and it helps her greatly against the people who think they can take too many liberties with her. Loreza is fond of flowers, often using them for her outfits, and finds great joy in spending her time in the man-made blooming oases among the sands. Even though she has an air of carelessness around herself, Loreza is rather patient, unlike her mostly hot-headed sisters, and has a good memory. These traits make her a quick learner.

The noble house Allyrion of Godsgrace is pleased to announce the birth of Hasaryn Allyrion, first son of Lord Dastan and his paramour, Selene. The Lord of Godsgrace has acknowledged the baby boy as his trueborn son, granting him the Allyrion name. The matter of the boy’s role as heir of Godsgrace is still to be discussed with his grace, the Prince of Dorne.
Despite being away from home, the rite of the naming ceremony Namakarna was conducted at Highgarden on the first full moon after the tenth day of Hasaryn’s birth. The baby was bathed and dressed in new garments given to Dastan by his lady mother, Lady Ashara. Dastan’s immediate family and friends from the the Dornish court were invited to attend this private ceremony.
