I’m posting a (much) longer excerpt of a chapter I worked on because #fakegirlfriends Caris (approx. 5,300 words)
CHAPTER ELEVEN
“This is insane,” hisses Talis, for the fifth time that day.
“I know,” says Iris, also for the fifth time that day.
“By insane I mean suicidal.”
“I appreciate the good vibes you’re sending my way.”
“You know I’m always here for you,” Talis nods sagely.
The tablet is propped back up on its stand on the table under the window so Talis can see the whole room and be a part of the group as Iris and Cat prepare for the gala. They aren’t going to be able to bring much with them. Cat bought a, very tiny, purse while they were hunting for appropriate black-tie attire, but it’s built more for fashion than practicality and therefore barely large enough for them to stuff their ID’s and forged invitation to Claire Bennet plus one, in.
M’Lell didn’t send Iris many documents, but what little they did is chock full of relevant information. Iris spent the morning memorizing the positions of the events security detail and planned watch routes while transferring the documents that sketch out the floor plan of the building to the chip in her arm for ease of access. She feels as prepared for this job as one can be, considering the circumstances, and counts herself lucky not to be going in entirely blind.
While waiting for the taxi Iris gives herself a final look over in the mirror, gently dabbing at her shimmering eyeshadow and lipstick.
Pleased with the outcome she turns to Talis. “What do you think?”
“Very classy. And inconspicuous.”
“Just what I was going for.”
“I know.”
Iris glares at her. “If you know so much then tell me this: where exactly will Ahn have the device?”
Talis disappears from the screen to be replaced by swirling purple mist and black letters slowly pushing through. ‘Try again later’ it reads.
Iris doesn’t bother replying, simply slams the tablet screen down, waits for Talis’ muffled cursing, and shoves it in her purse.
“We ready to go then?” says Cat, emerging from the bathroom. She’s gone with a similar color scheme to Iris’ dress, black with silver accents, though she’s chosen a pair of slacks and suit jacket over a silver button up shirt. Her makeup is more involved than Iris’ however, choosing a bolder red lipstick and dramatic winged eyeliner.
“Whenever you are,” says Iris, admiring her style.
The taxi is waiting for them outside the hotel and whisks them away through the night, passing twinkling streetlamps and bright shop windows. With proper rest the trip through town goes significantly smoother for Iris and she’s able to step out of the cab without the same feeling of nausea. She readjusts the hem of her dress that comes to rest halfway down her thigh, while Cat steps out beside her and takes a minute to process their surroundings.
Ambassador Ahn’s gala is being host at the Galactic Institute of Art and Science, and it is huge. Not big, not large, not giant, but monumentally huge. It takes up an entire block at the center of the city and containes nearly 400 floors. The first ten or so levels are dedicated to hospitality: restaurants, café’s, ballrooms, meetings rooms, etc.; all decorated welcomingly and designed for comfort.
The rest of the floors are split by subject, with art centered rooms on the lower levels, and science higher up. The floors are designed for efficiency and to keep visitor’s attention on the displays. The displays are brought in from planets all over the galaxy and represents the creativity, ingenuity, and genius of a hundred-separate species. Nothing in the known universe could ever come close to comparing to the sheer size and quality of these exhibits.
Not that Iris is going to get much of a chance to look around. In fact, if she’s lucky, she won’t have to look far at all. She’s hoping for a fast entrance and an even faster exit, as long as the universe decides to work in her favor for once.
The night is warm, it’s early summer, but she can’t help a shiver and the goose bumps that form along her arms as she passes between the rose gardens lining the path in front of the museum. She and Cat join the small throng of people making their way up the bone white, marble steps.
They fall into line together and Iris feels Cat jump in surprise when she takes her hand with no warning. Cat looks from their now linked hands, and back at Iris who looks determinedly ahead.
“What?” she starts to ask, but Iris interrupts her.
“We’ll be less obvious like this.”
“Oh,” says Cat. “That’s fair. I usually work alone, and I have to say having a so called partner in crime is a completely different ballpark.”
Iris spares her a smile. “You’ll get used to it in no time. You might even find you like having a partner to help you out,” she says and winks at Cat.
Iris turns her focus on the security guard they’re now in front of. Cat presents the invitation, and both of their ID’s are scrutinized in great detail, but they’re waved through with no problems. A second guard checks Cat’s bags and scans them, taking an extra close look at Iris’ tablet. The machine beeps at Cat and she’s called out of the line, but the harried looking guard waves her through almost before a feeble excuse about jewelry passes her lips.
Annoyance flirts through Iris’ brain. Cat is obviously hiding something in her jacket she didn’t warn Iris about. Cat refuses to meet her eye as they walk the final few feet and into the main foyer. Iris shakes off her annoyance, it isn’t fair of her to expect Cat to tell her everything when they barely know each other and chooses to focus on the room in front of her.
During normal day to day operations the lobby is an impressive site. There’s a mural of the galaxy with every star and planet painted in excruciating detail. On the floor is a mosaic of the more immediate solar system done with the same unbelievable attention to detail. There are shades of green and blue Iris has never seen artificially replicated so perfectly before.
The lobby is divided into twelve sections marked off by pillars made with the same marble as the stairs outside. The room is bathed in a soft yellow light that mimics the tone and movement of thousands of candles everywhere. There are a hundred tables arranged orderly around the room with white tablecloths and silver center pieces. The overall effect is ethereal and mystical. Talis would have loved it if she could see it, but Iris can’t risk being found out, not this early in the night.
“Wow,” says Iris.
“I know,” says Cat.
“Ma’am?” An attendant grabs her attention. “What is your name?”
“Claire Bennet,” she says after a short pause. She’s been caught off guard and hopes he doesn’t notice the hesitation.
Like a professional he ignores her near fatal blunder with nothing more than a quirked eyebrow and checks their logs. “If you’ll follow me, ladies, I’ll escort you to your table.”
“Thank you,” says Iris. She smiles and rests her hand in the crook of Cat’s elbow.
He leads them across the hall to one of the back tables half hidden in shadow. The positioning suits Iris just fine, she has full view of the hall, is seated next to the less important guests that don’t draw much attention and is partially hidden herself.
She sits back in her seat, sips at the wine the attendant pours for her, and watches as the rest of the guests mingle and get settled. Species of every shape, size, and color wander around the lobby oh-ing and ah-ing over the decorations. Their table gradually fills but they are ignored, and they neglect their neighbors.
Cat sits in the seat next to her, but she leaves her drink untouched. While Iris scouts out their surroundings, she scours through the program the attendant leaves them.
“No mention of the prototype here,” she says, too low for any of their neighbors to hear.
“Not much of a surprise there. We’ll stay here until everything gets going. Just follow my lead.”
“You got it, boss.”
Iris rolls her eyes at the over exaggerated deference.
Soon enough the lights dim, and an expectant hush falls over the crowd. A stage lifts from the floor near the opposite side of the hall and a spotlight illuminates a polished wood podium. Ambassador Kimiko Ahn is known the galaxy over as a woman who likes to put on a show, and tonight she doesn’t disappoint.
Anticipation begins to mount to a soundtrack of classical music gradually growing louder and more urgent until the audience is on their feet. It isn’t until the song hits the pinnacle of its score and the crowd, as a collective, feels about to burst that Ahn steps gravely under the light.
Immediately a thunderous round of applause erupts. Iris clamps her hands over her ears in a fruitless attempt to muffle the overwhelming noise and notices Cat follow her lead out of the corner of her eye. Ahn, on the other hand, preens under the concentrated attention of so many people and seems to absorb some of that energy into herself.
“Thank you. Thank you, everybody,” she says after a few minutes and gestures for the audience to quiet down. They follow her direction and settle down, eager for the speech she’ll open the gala with.
“I appreciate you taking time out of your busy lives to come to my little get together here tonight.” She pauses in a very obviously rehearsed manner for the bit of laughter that receives to pass. Two screens are lowered next to her, one on either side of the stage for those in the very back, like Iris and Cat, to get the full Ambassador Kimiko Ahn charm effect. This means that Iris can see the nauseatingly self-congratulatory smile Ahn flashes the audience while she magnanimously waits for the laughter to die down.
“Now, I won’t take up much of your time. I’m sure you’re all eager to get through dinner and start exploring my personal collection. Just a few announcements. This floor is free for you to roam, there are over a dozen different displays for you to peruse through and I hope you enjoy them all.
You will have limited access to the second floor where I have a few more interactive activities for you all to play around with, including a rediscovered holographic game we found in the ruins of Allorn. If you don’t mind me say it is very retro, and much fun. And of course, the bar will be open for the duration of the night.
I won’t monopolize your time further tonight, but please feel free to ask me any questions you may have throughout the night. I could talk for an eternity about everything you will see on display tonight. Again, thank you so much for coming out tonight and I hope you enjoy yourself.”
The stage goes dark and Ambassador Ahn is lost to shadow. A miniature army of waiters come swarming from the edges of the room and descend on the guests with trays of food. The attentive mood that had overtaken the crowd snaps, and is replaced by the sounds of conversation, laughter, and clinking cutlery that now ring out across the room.
While everyone else relaxes and turns their attention to dinner Iris goes on full alert and prepares to make her escape to somewhere a little less populated, but with a lot more security.
There’s a dark hall practically directly behind her. A quick glance around her shows everyone in the immediate vicinity preoccupied with food and conversation. She taps Cat on the arm who in turn grasps her purse close to her person. They slip down the shadowy hall and hide around the first corner.
Iris pulls out her tablet from one of the roomy pockets in her dress and thumbs on the flashlight. She lights up her left forearm and touches the swirly, flower tattoo. She watches as the ink swirls against her skin and forms into the rough outline of the buildings floor plans.
The map shows them on the east side of the facility and in the hall leading to an area generally reserved for employee use, which means it will be largely abandoned during a private function, and has halls leading to all sections of the first floor while avoiding the main floors. She’s reasonably certain she knows where Ahn would stash the device, at least generally, if she brought it with her. The problem being it’s on the complete opposite side of the museum and she’ll have to sneak past the kitchens to get there.
Iris flicks the light off and presses herself against the wall, pulling Cat along with her, when she hears the low murmur of voices and hurried footsteps coming towards her. Iris watches a light bob up and down as the intruders make their way towards them. There’s no way they won’t be noticed. They’re still close enough to the banquet they can easily feign ignorance and claim they got lost on their way to find a restroom.
But if they do that, they’ll probably insist of walking them back to the main room. They need another guise, another reason why they need to be here. Some excuse of privacy they’re likely to empathize with and be willing to overlook their voyeur into a restricted area.
They grow closer, Iris is able to pick out a few words from their conversation such as ‘happy’ and ‘dessert’ and figure they’re part of the serving staff. That doesn’t stop her heart from racing at the idea of being caught.
The glow of the intruder’s light is about to hit them and Iris panics, jumping on the first idea that pops in her stressed mind.
She grabs Cat by her jacket lapels, pushes her up against the wall, stands on her very tippy toes, and presses her lips against hers.
Iris can feel Cat, understandably tense up at first. She is surprised, however, by how quickly she relaxes under Iris’ grip and begins to return the kiss, bending her knees to make them more level with one another.
It almost makes Iris forget why they started this in the first point. It doesn’t last long.
“What have we got here?” asks a voice behind them.
Iris whips around, immediately covering her eyes with a hand to protect them from the bright light shining right at them.
“The parties back that way you know,” says the second party, obviously struggling to push back her giggles.
“I didn’t think anyone was down here,” Iris says, not having to fake the shaking in her voice. “We,” she pauses to look at Cat and grab her hand, “were just looking for a bit of privacy.”
“We can see that,” says the first person. “We’ll pretend we didn’t see you if you promise to rejoin the gala soon. And under no circumstances go further down the hallway. We got a deal?” he asks.
“Of course, thank you so much. I appreciate your discretion here.”
“Don’t mention it,” says the woman. “And don’t have too much fun.” She winks at them.
Iris sighs in relief as they disappeared down the hall. She taps the light back on, this time on a lower setting, and sets off down the hall with Cat in tow.
“What? You’re just going to do that and act like nothing happened?” accuses Cat, tension clear in her voice.
“I told you, acting like a couple makes us a lot less conspicuous.”
“You’re a lot wilder than anyone ever gives you credit for, Iris.” Something close to admiration lacing her tone and replacing the tension.
“I ran off with the son of my families arch-nemesis for two years. What part of that doesn’t scream ‘wild’ to you?”
“Fair enough. Where are we going anyways?” asks Cat.
“We need to get to the other side of the buildings. Unfortunately, is seems the best route there is going to take us straight passed the kitchen.”
“That doesn’t seem like the best plan.”
“It’ll be fine. Like I said, just follow my lead and be quiet,” says Iris. They come to an intersection and she carefully pokes her head out and check that there’s no one there.
“I don’t think being quiet is going to get us passed the kitchen.” Cat rushes after Iris as she jogs through the intersection.
“Thanks, Cat. I’ll figure out a way passed it once I get a look at it.”
“Planning on the fly. I love it.”
“I can’t tell if you’re mocking me or not. I’m going to go with you’re being sincere and ignore any evidence to the contrary.”
Iris pretends she doesn’t hear Cat’s responding chuckle as they resume their trek to the west side of the building. The hallways are pleasantly deserted, it seems almost too easy and she can’t help but feel like they’re walking straight into a trap. Even if they are there’s not much more for her to do but march into the lion’s den, head held high.
Iris and Cat are a few halls down from the kitchens before she starts to notice any signs of life in these side paths. Iris can hear the busy sounds of clinking pots and escaping steam, along with the scent of spices wafting over her.
She waves Cat closer to the wall and inches forward a few more inches until she hovers around a corner where she can observe the kitchen without being seen for a few minutes while she tries to come up with a plan to get passed.
There isn’t much going on this side of the kitchen as there is at the second door closer to the lobby, but every once in a while one of the cooking assistances bustles around fetching some pot or other for the chef. Iris begins to brace herself to grab Cat and make a mad dash by the kitchen door when one of the event’s security guards decides to make a grand appearance.
This guard isn’t from the same group keeping keen eyes on the guests. This one comes from Ahn’s personal contingent composed largely of Walyer’s. A species of large, green specimens with thick, scale like skin, and anything from two to six horns framing their faces making their large eyes, which already take up nearly half of their faces as is, seem even larger.
The bottom half of their face is occupied by a small mouth with lips that are eternally held open by large, yellowing fangs. Walyer’s often find themselves employed as personal security and prison transports due to their intimidating features and ability to exert brute force. Iris has never met a Wayler who stands less that nine feet tall and isn’t too broad to fit through standard doorways.
This Wayler is particularly intimidating. They’re nearly eleven feet tall with two giant guns strapped to its back, a belt of vicious looking knives around its waist, and a vest of grenades and other explosive weapons attached.
Iris swore she felt her heart seize and a wave of dizziness wash over, she feels herself start to hyperventilate.
“Well fuck,” she says, and immediately clamps a hand over her mouth as she inches back to where she left Cat. Luckily the Wayler doesn’t seem to hear her. She grabs Cat and scurries down the hall to hide behind a large potted plant, crouching down as low as she can. A few seconds of clearing her mind and taking deep, calming breathes and she is back in the moment. She slowly loosens her death grip on Cat’s arm and cautiously peeks around the plant back the way she’s come.
“What the hell, Iris?” Cat finally asks, now that Iris doesn’t appear on the verge of bolting out of this galaxy.
Iris peeks around the plant and finds there’s no sign of the Wayler so she relaxes, slumping with her back against the wall, and rests her head in her hands.
“Wayler,” she says.
Cat swears. “You have got to be kidding me.”
“I very much wish that were so,” says Iris, not lifting her head.
“Okay,” says Cat. She sits down next to Iris and thrums her fingers against her leg. “Okay, we need to leave. We can go back to the hotel and work on a new plan. We have time, and this is officially too dangerous.”
“I thought I was the one in charge here? Can’t you just,” Iris waves her hands around, “just siren it or whatever?”
“Oh, come on. First of all, that is so not how that works. And secondly, you don’t actually plan on going through with this?”
Iris raises an eyebrow at her and shrugs her shoulders, already inching forward again.
“Wow. I didn’t believe them, but you really are full hardy aren’t you?”
Iris ignores this as she resumes her earlier spot at the corner peeking into the kitchen, Cat sliding along behind her trying to stick close.
“You know there’s another reason Zerich chose me to come with you. It’s because no one else wanted to be dragged along on your desperate bid for freedom. Your reputation precedes you,” says Cat, hissing the last part under her breath.
Iris rolls her eyes. “You’re exaggerating. There’s nothing desperate about this. I’m just eager for it to be over.”
“Either way, you’re willing to get us killed.”
“You don’t have to babysit me you know. You are free to go back to the hotel. I know you can track my tablet so it’s not like I’m going to disappear if I get back out,” says Iris. She’s growing increasingly annoyed at the delay, she could have gotten passed the kitchen and on her way in the amount of time they’ve spent bickering.
“And miss the fun?” Iris is surprised by the sudden smile on her face. “Not for anything. I’m ready for an Iris brand adventure.” Cat pulls a compact pistol from her inside jacket pocket and gestures to the kitchen with it. “Lead the way, I’m right behind you.”
“I don’t understand you.” Iris shakes her head, happy in the fact that even though Cat kept its existence from her it’s coming in handy now.
“Good.”
“Right.” She motions for Cat to be quiet and strains her ears, searching for any sound or sign of movement. Hearing nothing, she ducks her head out for a quick look. Seeing nothing, she takes a deep breath and looks to Cat.
“It’s not that far,” whispers Iris.
“Make a run for it?”
“It’s worth a shot.”
Iris rolls her shoulders, sends out a plea for success to the universe, and nods to Cat. Cat nods back, and they throw themselves down the hall. They bound passed the kitchen door in a few, sprawling strides, until they reach the shadows of the next hall where they can’t be seen.
Iris slips at the last minutes and ends up scrapping her knee and ripping her leggings in the process. Cat partially catches her and pushes her up against the wall and they freeze, breathing heavily and listening again for any indication they’ve been discovered. Hearing nothing again, they relax, and take stock of the position they’ve found themselves in. Eye to eye, face to face, so close they can feel each other breath and uncomfortably reminiscent of their earlier farce.
The two quickly push apart, breaking eye contact, and take a moment to compose themselves and catch their breath.
There’s no sign of the Wayler. While they’re large, they’re deceptively quiet. Iris can only hope it went through the kitchen and out the other side.
Taking advantage of this quiet moment Iris studies the map on her arm. She waits for it to update and reorient itself to her new position. The situation is getting too nerve wracking for her taste and she’s hoping to find a new route to their destination.
Preferably one unreachable by Wayler’s.
There’s a room in the west wing where the museum catalogs and cleans their items. Some of these items get left in the room for days, so the room is heavily protected and seems the best place to keep something valuable holed up for a night.
She moves the map around, trying to find a new angle, as if that will make a secret route magically appear. Which is exactly what happens. She zooms in to try and get a closer look at their current location and a hidden lower layer of the map appears, revealing a series of vents she didn’t notice before traveling right over where she needs to be. She dances in place as a silent victory cheer.
“What did you find?” asks Cat.
Iris looks up and flashes her light along the hall looking for the entrance to the vent and there, just a few feet to her left on the ceiling, is a grill just big enough for her to squeeze through. Though that assumes she’ll be able to reach that high and force it open in the first place.
She smiles.
“Slight change of plans. I hope you’re not claustrophobic.”
“Not particularly.”
“Good, because I am,” says Iris.
Before she’s able to psych herself up and find a way to get into the vent she hears footsteps. She hurriedly turns off her light and contorts herself into a small, formless blob against the wall until they pass. They have the good fortune of being in a hall that has the lights turned off and easily go unseen.
Light back on she places herself under the vent and slides her hand as far up the wall as she can and finds that, even on her tiptoes, her fingertips are barely able to graze the bottom of the grate guarding the vent.
“Oh, that is cute,” says Cat with a giggle.
“Shut up,” says Iris. “If you don’t have anything productive to add to the conversation then leave me alone. It’s not like you’re much better off.”
“No. But this might help,” she says hauling over a bench Iris overlooked.
Iris stares at it for a few minutes, annoyed at herself for not seeing it first.
“Be my guest.” She moves to the side to give Cat room to position the bench and step up on it.
It’s only about knee high, and doesn’t seem particularly sturdy, but it gives her the extra boost needed making it the best, if only, option she has.
Iris lifts the tablet up until it lights up the entrance to the vent, so Cat is able to get a better look at it as she clambers onto the table. She takes a moment to find her center of gravity, then digs her fingernails between the metal grate and the wall and yanks.
A shower of plaster pours down, sounding like raindrops hitting the ground as they fall to the floor. Covered in a smattering of dust Cat muffles a cough in the crook of her elbow. She crouches down on the table and passes the grate to Iris, who in turn hands her the tablet-turned-flashlight, and gently leans the grate against the legs of the bench on the floor.
This finished, Cat squints up into the dark vent with reluctance.
“It’s disgusting,” she says.
“Would you rather risk running into the Waylor again?”
Cat sighs but doesn’t respond. Iris watches as she grasps the edges of the vent opening, experimentally jumps up and down testing the vents durability, and heaves herself up and in. She wedges her elbows in, hooks a knee over the edge, and pulls herself forwards. The vent’s only a few inches wider than her shoulders and it takes her a few seconds of calculated wiggling to get fully inside.
Iris leaves her alone as she lays on her stomach, gasping for breath, and feels grateful that she wasn’t the one to go in first. She’s also grateful she’s had the foresight to wear a dress with a flexible skirt and practical flats.
“You doing okay in there?” she asks after what seems like an appropriate amount of time passed.
“I am absolutely fantastic. I love having spiders for dinner,” Cat says. Her voice is muffled and has an odd echo to it, like she’s speaking into a tin can. Which she essentially is, all things considered.
“Your sacrifice for the greater good has been noted. You about ready to keep going?”
“Why did I go first when you’re the one with the map anyways?”
Iris rolls her eyes. “I loaded the map on the tablet too. Just follow the purple line I laid out; it’ll be fine.”
“You say that now, but I’m not certain you’re going to be feeling that way once you’re in here, Miss Claustrophobic.”
“Yes, thank you. I’m trying not to think about it so how about you scoot up a bit and let me get this over with already?”
Cat moves forward another foot, giving Iris just enough room to haul herself in. She places her hands on the vent and pushes herself up until the top half of her is lying down. Her feet scramble under her, trying to find something to gain purchase on. She should have made an actual plan here before jumping in. She doesn’t find anything to brace her feet against, but there are a few crevices along the wall she’s able to dig her fingers into and pull herself the rest of the way in with.
She stays where she is, resting her head on her arms for a few minutes trying to steady her breathing. She can feel her heart beginning to race and just the thought of looking up and seeing nothing, but grey walls makes her nauseous.
“Oh my god,” she says. She can feel her chest begin to constrict as panic sets in.
“Don’t worry, it gets better.” Iris can feel the vibrations of her voice through the vent.
“What, are there scorpions up ahead or something?”
“No, I actually mean it. It opens up quite a bit just up ahead.”
“If you’re fucking with me, I will cry. Forewarning.”
“Get up here, Iris.”
Iris groans, but she finally lifts her head, doing everything in her power to focus solely on Cat ahead of her.
Cat is right, the vent opens up considerably just a short distance away. Iris crawls her way forward until she’s able to sit up next to Cat.
“This map is stupid,” says Cat.
“Be nice to my map.”
“I’m sorry map,” says Cat.
“Thank you. What’s wrong with it?”
“It’s rather bare bones don’t you think? How am I supposed to figure out where the hell we are?”
“Let me see it,” says Iris, yanking it from Cat’s grasp when she holds it out behind her.
“Rude, but okay.”
Iris reorients the map until it’s zoomed in on their location and a purple line tracing their path through the maze of vents appears.
“Do you want it back, or do you want me to navigate for you?” Iris holds the tablet out to Cat.
“I think I can handle from here. It’s not like there are a lot of actual direction changes or something,” says Cat. “You ready to go again?”
Iris rubs at her face, trying to pull all the cobwebs from her face. “As ready as I’ll ever be, I guess.” She hopes the map M’Lell gave her is accurate, it has been up to now, because the idea of being trapped up here makes her breath catch in her throat. She forces that train of thought out of her mind and focuses on the task at hand. Namely not dying.

We Are One XV
“You’re very quite lately,” Alex noted, sitting on the edge of Sage’s bed. “And I know you’ve been having some bad days. My Dad said he-“
“Your dad didn’t knock.”
“He didn’t know better and it was a good thing he didn’t knock. You’d have done something you regretted,” Alex frowned, watching Sage play thoughtlessly with Salem’s tail as he slept.
“I wasn’t going to do anything, Alex. I’m past that.”
“You’re not if you still consider it. Listen, I know you won’t admit it but-what Enzo said hurt you. I know it did because if my brother said something like that to me I’d be well, I don’t know. It wouldn’t be pretty I can tell you that much,” Alex made sure she was seen from Sage’s peripheral before resting a light hand on the other girl’s leg, “so whatever you’re internalizing-you have to tell me.”
“I’m just thinking, okay? About what I’m supposed to do from here on out,” Sage frowned. “No matter what everyone else hopes for there’s going to be a final show down. There’s going to be choices we have to make.”
“Hey, look at me.” Sage reluctantly did as she was told. “They’re not going to be easy ones but you have me. That’s at least one person who has your back, right?”
“I just feel like my family isn’t supposed to stay together you know?” Sage sighed, finally relaxing. “Something always ruins it. This time it’s some revolutionary jerk.”
“Fight for it,” Alex insisted, “if it matters then fight for it. Sometimes losing something hurts more when you don’t try to keep it in the first place. If you fight for it and still lose-then maybe it wasn’t meant to last.”
“Why can’t things just be permanent?”
“I don’t know. I guess that’s not how the world works,” Alex shrugged.
“I don’t like the world,” Sage pouted, jutting out her bottom lip.
“Eh, sometimes it’s not so bad. Otherwise I wouldn’t have you. An adorable semi annoying girlfriend.” Alex teased, earning a playful kick to the ribs.
“Shush.”
— — —
Drew remembered Kubu returning with blood across his hands. It was a deep red in contrast to the white. She watched Harper scrutinize the boy’s every move. She saw the flicker of distrust in the other girl. In fact, Drew was beginning to doubt what was at play.
She recalled when Killian returned soaked to the bone with water and wielding some foreign object. The tension in the air was thicker than ice and no one dared to cut it. Not until Harper decided it was time to do so.
“When did we decide on murder?” Harper demanded.
“We are drawing them out. Forcing action on their part,” Killian replied calmly.
“Who did you kill?” Drew remained quiet as Harper approached Kubu with a thousand suns burning in her eyes.
“The father of a girl. The red head is fond of her,” He replied with care. “She is an orphan, but she is in no danger of legal action. From what I was told this girl is an adult. She needs no guardian or custody.”
“You slaughtered her father?” Drew’s voice finally broke the silence. It was steady, cool, but edged with pain as something flickered in her mind.
“I meant to do it in his sleep. I meant for no suffering to be had,” Kubu protested.
“You always intended suffering if you chose to kill the people that girl loved,” Drew remarked, still with that ever annoying apathy.
“It is done. We cannot fix it,” Killian waved his hand in dismissal.
“Have you considered the idea that we have crossed a line?” Harper stepped in front of the eldest boy to stare him down. “What if they come after us how we’ve come after them?”
“They won’t.”
“How do you know?” Max piped up from where they sat in the corner.
“They have a moral compass that surpasses their desires for revenge,” Killian assured.
“Some do. But there is an entire program and facility at their disposal isn’t there?” Max asked. “What about their bosses? They can order anything. Enzo’s friends don’t even have to lift a finger for us to be in danger.”
“Then I suggest we temporarily return home,” Killian shrugged.
“Not yet,” Kubu shook his head, “give it time. They will be hungry to retaliate, but too scared to do so lest they overextend. Let the anger subside after a day or two. Then we move. Emotions will be less at play.”

Two days had passed since that fateful evening. Nathaniel returned safely along with Orion after spending 48 hours at the Barton residence. Both walked in on chaos.
“We have a reading,” someone called from their surveillance station.
“Lock in,” Fury ordered.
“Oh this cannot be good,” Nathaniel mumbled, “Fury rarely gets involved unless it’s dire.”
“Send out aerial surveillance team.” Fury instructed from the central platform usually taken up by Maria. Orion scanned the scene until he spotted Fox at her own station.
“Hey, what’s going on?” He asked, lowering his voice for a reason he didn’t know.
“The hell if I know,” Fox grumbled, “apparently some pretty serious tech was stolen when Piper faced off with Killian. Guess it’s pretty deadly or Fury wouldn’t have his panties in a bunch over it. Right now we’re trying to peg where their little gang is and someone has a read on your cousin.”
“Let me see,” hopping the railing Orion squatted down beside Fox. Sure enough he could see a vague and hazy image of his cousin beside the girl named Harper. “Well I’ll be damned.”
“Looks like they’re heading down town,” called an agent.
“Good. I don’t doubt that’s where they’ve been hiding,” Fury determined. “It’s easy to lay low there. Any sighting on the others?”
“They’re one block away from targets D and C. Running a potential route analysis. Seems they’ll be meeting at the following location.” A schematic appeared on Fox’s screen with a red box placed about a small and squat building.
“Send the aerial team to the building.”
“Sir, with all due respect what are we planning here?” Nathaniel asked.
“A sting operation to take out their base of operations. Nothing huge, but it may limit their functionality and destroy that weapon they’ve stolen,” Fury explained.
“Sir, are we certain this is where they operate?”
“I have numerous accounts of the targets gathering at this specific location. I also have records stating the home was emptied months ago,” Fury studied the agents before him.
“Run the address,” Nathaniel whispered, leaning over the railing so Fox could hear him.
“Why?”
“I don’t know. I have an uneasy feeling about this. I don’t doubt Fury’s done his research but I also know that real estate agents in that area are shit heads. They’ll do and say anything to get people turned out of homes especially when they can’t pay the bills,” Nathaniel explained, “and I don’t want him to make a mistake because some money laundering asshole lied on government paper work.”
“Okay, sheesh. I’m on it.” Fox’s fingers flicked across the keys with impeccable speed.
— — —
“Stop and go,” Drew repeated.
“I get it. It’s a quick visit. We don’t want to give away family locations. I know. Killian said it eight times already,” Harper hissed, shooting a glare at Drew. “We’re close anyways. Just another block-“
“Sh,” Drew slung out an arm stopping Harper in her tracks, “do you hear that?”
Despite her frustration with the alien Harper remained silent straining her ears to pick up on anything unusual. In the distance a careful thwack thwack thwack sounded. “A helicopter?”
“I don’t know what that is,” Drew admitted.
“They come here all the time. Perks of living in a dump. Now come on,” Harper pushed past her companion and kept walking. Drew remained a few paces behind staring intently at the sky. The noise she’d heard only grew louder with each passing second.
“Harper, I don’t like this.”
“It’s fine.”
“No, Harper-“
Just as the two approached the property line a large spotlight shown down from a dark shape in the sky. On its side was an emblem Harper knew well. “No. What are they doing her-“
“Harper wait!” Sprinting, Drew hurdled the fence and tackled the other girl to the grass. A loud bang sent a thrum through her ears followed by a wave of heat.Glancing up, Drew was met with fire.
“Oh God,” Harper breathed. After a second’s hesitation, she sprinted towards the inferno. Shaking her head, Drew followed.
Bursting through the door both were greeted by suffocating heat. Smoke stung Drew’s eyes and clawed at her throat but she shook the pain away. Off to the right she spotted a young boy slumped onto the floor. “I have him. Go!”
Nodding, Harper bolted down a small hallway as Drew collected the unconscious form. Tucking him to her chest she rushed back to the lawn. Spilling his body onto the grass she searched for signs of life.
Inside, Harper collected her baby brother and youngest sister. Both were conscious albeit stunned and in shock.
“Come on,” Harper pleaded, “just get outside okay? Here, take Ahanu. I’ll be back.”
Watching her two siblings disappear, Harper began her search for the rest of her family. Smoke began to collect in thicker and thicker pockets making it even harder to breath and see. Still, Harper continued the search.
Drew sat kneeling in the grass as Killian, Max, and Kubu finally arrived. They lingered out of sight by the overgrown bushes watching with wide eyes.
Something about the scene was impossibly familiar to her. The raging fire, the crying kids, her sense of helplessness and confusion, the heat, the fear, and the dangerous ship overhead.
Images flicked in front of her like foggy memories of the past. Soldiers tromping across colored sands soaked with blood. Two corpses lay mutilated at her feet and there was a man. A man she didn’t quite remember. He was frightening. Drew vaguely heard her own voice-much smaller than it was-calling for someone. Her father.
She could see it all so clearly. Seas of red, screams, body parts strewn about, and the horrible thing in the sky tearing everything apart while some man watched. Stomach twisting in pain, Drew leaned forward fighting against the searing heat in her skull.
It was the most vibrant series of images she’d ever seen. There was something familiar in them. Something she knew very well and yet she didn’t. It was foreign and familiar all at once.
— — —
“We need to get over there now,” Nathaniel yelled.
“No,” Fury spoke softly.
“What do you mean no?! People are in there! I knew this was-how did you make this mistake?!” Nathaniel demanded, his face red in anger.
“Everything checked out. I did my part. Something went wrong along the way. We had two days to prepare for this! There was no indication of-of a family inside.” Fury replied coolly, “Now you are to stay here. That’s an order.”
As Nathaniel argued with Fury in the background Orion watched the scene unfold from the surveillance footage. Drew had managed to pull someone out of the flames but now she seemed to be laying there in some form of shock. Time passed incredibly slow and after Harper’s third trip the building gave a final shudder before collapsing.
“How many are there?” Orion whispered. He counted slowly and carefully, “Seven. That’s good. How many are alive? Where’s the coms link?”
Scrounging about Fox silently passed over the device. Orion pressed the button getting in touch with the helicopter team, “how many are alive?”
“Give me a se-“
“How many are alive, damn it!” Orion growled.
“Five. We don’t see any vitals on our scanner for the eldest boy or the eldest girl,” Came the reply.
“Shit,” Orion breathed. His heart sank in disbelief. “This shouldn’t have happened. This shouldn’t have happened!”
Fox only watched the footage as Orion joined the frenzy with Nathaniel and Fury. She saw the blaze slowly begin to die and she continued to watch until the video feed cut out. She’d been so absorbed in it that even after the screen went dead she remained in her seat staring at darkness. She was beginning to remember why she hated organizations like SHIELD.

Roleplay Server Log #261
“Hostile Takeover, Mojang Office Hi-jinks, Flight of the Firebird”
-Not that far away-
[Notch] Escorts Flux into the cage. - Do you really think this will work?
[Flux] - I honestly have no idea...
[Notch] I hope it does, I want you to be protected too. -
[Flux] - I know, and your thoughts are so very much appreciated- She begins approaching the two consoles in the center of the elaborate prison
[Notch] Doubly so because I don't know where your seed is stored...
[Flux] - Honestly I'm surprised it still exists, it's been there for so long- She kneels in front of the command block which holds the seed for the NOTCH AI's
[Notch] If there's anything I can do...?
[Flux] - Just stay, please
[Notch] Of course. - Waits with baited breath, hoping she succeeds.
[Flux] Concentrates and her magic begins gathering around the command block.  As she focus', she's reaching for the intricate base code of the server and prodding at it.  She grunts a little as she feels resistance, her fingers start to curl a little as she tenses.  The ground around Flux is beginning to grow tainted and shade to purple.  Her body begins to curl as she tries to take control of the other server, she tries using a bit more force and the seed reacts violently, throwing Flux back and away and causing her to lose control of her magic.  Her taint spreads quickly, carrying all the way into the village above as it's master lays on the ground, curling up and trembling from both pain and shock.  Flux is fluctuating between being solid and mist like-
[Notch] Leaps to her aid- FLUX!
[Flux] Her breathing is ragged as she glances at Notch- Notch...- She tries to hold in a noise of pain as it travels through her body causing her to curl up tighter.  She's never truly felt pain before
[Notch] I'll... I'll get you to some help! - Frantically he scoops her up in his arms. And moves as fast as he can up the tunnels and out into the light. He's calling for TLOT mentally because his hands are too full to type- Outside everything is shaded a vibrant purple
[TLOT] Suddenly perks up and dashes out of the room without a second thought.
[Steve] Nearly knocks Doc over to race after him.
[Notch] Is partway across Lie's yard when he notices a lot of eyes on him.
-Most of the village is watching. Some in awe and others in fear of the NOTCH carrying the apparently injured woman they already know. A few peel off to run in the direction of the castle. Seeking their Godly-king who meets them halfway-
[Flux] Clutches at Notch's shirt tightly, trying to keep herself in contact with him as much as she can- Please...  Stay...- Her voice is very quiet and she is close to passing out
[Notch] I'm not going anywhere, just hang on.
[TLOT] Dashes up flanked by several Testificates- What happened?!
-Flux's taint is beginning to recede and her breathing is starting to even out a little, but she's still trembling-
[Appel] You better not have hurt her, you.. you NOTCH!
[Steve] Easy there.
[Notch] She tried to take over the subseed and it injured her...
[TLOT] Is the color the blowback?
[Notch] Yes, I believe so.
[Flux] Whines a little, but her form is almost completely solid now, her most solid parts are where Notch is touching her-
[TLOT] Smooths her hair a bit- How can I help Flux?
[Flux] - I...  I don't understand...  What I am feeling...
[TLOT] Feels her mind- It's pain.
[Flux] - Pain...  It is...  Unfamiliar- She whines a little as she feels another burst of pain
[TLOT] Perhaps you should sleep - His words are supernaturally convincing...
[Pi] Suddenly falls over and starts snoring.
[Appel] Panics a bit and shakes his husband, trying to wake him.
[Flux] Her eyes begin to close as well, but her grip on Notch's shirt does not diminish-
[Jaam] He doesn't look so tough...
[Steve] Don't be rude!
[Flux] Falls asleep, curled up in Notch's arms-
[Choclet] How come he has hair?
[Notch] My head was cold.
[Coffi] Nods sagely- makes sense.
[Cheez] Pokes Notch-
[Notch] Squeaks-
[TLOT] Be nice. He was formerly a human like your friend Lie.
[Cheez] Humph.
[CP] Teleports closer- Now what the fuck is going on!?
[Notch] Very unmanly little scream-
[Testificates] Some suprised noises and a smattering of nervous laughter.
[CP] Growls a little- Can all of them go home?  I'm trying to convince CN that there's an ultra rare bird that only comes out at night so I can bang my wife
[TLOT] What am I, a sheepdog? They live here too.
[Steve] That's not safe Cp! Cn is to small to be out alone at night!
[CP] - So?
[Steve] Bolts off to tattle on Cp to Lie-
[Notch] Flux got hurt Cp. Some kind of feedback from trying to take over the dragon server on the subseed.
[CP] - Why was she trying to do that?
[Flux] Whimpers a little in her sleep-
[Notch] Because it would be safer then being in charge of your old seed that's just floating out there somewhere.
[CP] - Shouldn't be that hard to figure out where exactly it is, there's only so many places that an original alpha seed could be
[Notch] Goes white - That's bad...
[TLOT] Is already getting the shape from his mind. - We need a copy of that! Now!
[CP] - What is it?
[Notch] It's has to be on the big mainframe at my former company! They don't keep that stuff forever! Especially with the new management!
[CP] - So then Flux...
[TLOT] She might get deleted. We need your seed number Cp.
[CP] - Give me a sec to think, I've been on hundreds...
[Coocont] Flux is in danger?
[Milk] Why would anyone delete a seed? People would die!
[Escar] Think Cp!
[Creme] Nooo!
[Eggg] At Markus- You're a NOTCH! Do something!
[CP] Hesitantly rattles off a couple of different seed numbers before finally saying one with a bit more confidence-
[Notch] Cp! You can do this faster then anyone! Go find Jeb! He can get at the main server from home! Make him give you the file!
[CP] Face splits into a dark grin- Gladly- He flicks his hand and creates an opening before going through
[Jeb] Is dozing at his desk, it's relatively late and there's only a few programmers in the adjoining offices. He can smell the faint scent of someone making coffee in a different room, and on the screen in front of him a half-built 3D model is tumbling around.
-The screen begins glitching as CP slowly begins pulling himself out of the screen.  He pauses to scan his surroundings before getting to far simply because it's an unfamiliar place-
-The surroundings are a bank of computers in a nicely appointed office. There are little toys on the desks and other personal touches and a few nice shots of happy employees and awards framed on the walls. There's a faint whistling as a scruffy guy in jeans comes in with a cup of coffee and stops cold-
[CP] Growls at him-
[Snorik]  Drops his cup with a frightened squeak and it thumps on the carpet - He- hero- He crumples to the floor in a dead faint-
[CP] Finishes pulling himself out of the screen and walks around the fainted employee, seeking out his prey as he silently stalks the halls-
[Dofta] Makes some soft papery sounds as she walks down the hall with a small box of files-
[CP] Waits around a corner for them to get closer before reaching out and grabs them by the throat- Where's Jeb?
[Dofta] String of panicked Swedish words and at least two English cuss words-
[CP] Squeezes just a tiny bit- Well?
[Yster] Is totally silent in her running shoes and clocks Cp on the back of the head with a full clipboard of papers-
[CP] Scowls and summons his sword to his hand before turning to glare at the other woman with brightly glowing eyes-
[Yster] Gives Cp the full force of a can of pepper spray in the face-
[CP] Shakes his head and blinks a few times as he growls and releases Dofta to summon a bit of lava to clear his eyes-
[Yster] Grabs Dofta in a panic and the two of them run around a corner towards the front of the building-
[CP] Would prefer to chase them down but continues on searching for Jeb, simply kicking open the next door he comes across-
-On the other side of the door is a hallway that opens out into a large confrence room. A rather heavy man is playing with a VR helmet and the screen behind him for demonstration purposes shows a survival house being built.
[CP] Growls and uses his abilities to enter the VR system, popping up in front of the man- Where.  Is.  Jeb.
[Tokig] Hey! This is a private server! And that griefing stuff is getting old Svit. Go play on your own computer.
[CP] Exits and then yanks the VR headset off- I'm not Svit
[Tokig] Strangled noise -
[CP] - Now, where.  Is.  Jeb.
[Tokig] Shaking finger pointing- past the atrium...
[CP] - Sleep
[Tokig] Slow crumple to the floor knocking a bag of cheetos off the table as well-
[CP] Marches past and out into the hall again, heading for the atrium-
[Fangebo] Tapping out something on a laptop near a small fountain-
[CP] Storms right past her, honing in on Jeb-
[Fangbo] Eyes flick up and then back down just as Cp passes her - Cute outfit Svit. Gonna scare Jeb again?
[CP] - Sure, whatever
[Fangbo] Get it on tape this time okay? He's been jittery all day with all this file allocation and space-saving bullshit-
[CP] Says nothing more as he continues on, letting his senses out for the human he seeks.  He grins when he finally spots the name of his quarry on a door and kicks the door open harshly-
[Jeb] Is very startled and darts under his desk in terror-
[CP] - Hello again~  I've come for something, on Notch's behest
[Jeb] Is balled up under the desk - Anything! Just don't kick me in the nuts again!
[CP] - A server
[Jeb] You want...a server? I mean, I guess I can set you up! They're pretty cheap if you don't want to install a bunch of mods and stuff....
[CP] - One of the original alpha servers, it...  Needs to be kept safe
[Jeb] Whaaa, why would you want one of those? They were so... simple.
[CP] - I don't, but Notch does
[Jeb] Is regarding Cp cautiously - I can do that.... - He's wondering if it's safe to come out
[CP] Lists of the server's number- Now find it
[Jeb] Swallows hard- It's not in here, we have to go across the hall. Oh my gods... did anyone see you come in here?
[CP] Grins- A few
[Jeb] Looks horrified- Please tell me you didn't kill any of my team....
[CP] - My wife is already pissed at me, so no
[Jeb] Thank goodness... Come on, I'll get it for you, but then you have to leave. - He uncurls from the small space and stands up cautiously
[CP] - I dunno, it's fun terrorizing your employees
[Jeb] Please?
[CP] - Depends on how quickly you can get me that server
[Jeb] Yanks out a desk drawer and throws various office supplies on the floor before finding a thumb drive and cluching it in one sweaty fist- Follow me -
[CP] Walks unnervingly close to Jeb-
[Jeb] Darts past Fangbo who is still sitting there typing -
[Fangbo] Giggles as Cp passes, stalking menacingly behind the running figure - Good one Svit.
[Jeb] Bangs open a door to a room full of electronics and throws a chair at the nearest terminal before shoving in the thumbdrive and typing desperately.
[CP] Stands very closely behind Jeb-
[Jeb] Is sweating a lot. He keeps putting his password in wrong because Cp is terrorizing him.
[CP] - You'd better get it right this next time
[Jeb] I'm trying! I'm trying! - He makes it to the search screen and shakily types the numbers into it-
[CP] Glances back out towards the artrium-
[Fangbo] Has opened a small bag of chips and is munching quietly-
[Jeb] Finds the file and moves it to the drive-
[CP] - Are you fucking done yet?
-The little icon on the screen it showing the flying paper animation-
[Jeb] I'm going as fast as I can!
[CP] Scowls and gives the computer a boost-
-The computer gives a soft ping as the file finishes downloading-
[CP] - About time
[Jeb] Pulls out the small drive and thrusts it at him-Now please! Take it and go!
[CP] - Fine, but if this is wrong then I'm pretty sure Notch will beat you up himself- He heads back out into the artrium, grabs Fangbo's laptop from them before putting it down and using it to get back into the digital realm
[Fangbo] Gasps as the computer is taken from her and then watches in terrified awe as Cp uses it as a gateway-
[CP] Returns to the server in a much better mood-
[Notch] Did you get it?!
[CP] - Yeah yeah, it's right here- Holds up the thumb drive
[TLOT] Thats... that's your seed?
[CP] - Yup, it's tiny
[Toasts] How can a whole world be so small?
[Coffi] It's not possible, is it?
[CP] - It's old
[Godot] It's a precious gift...
[Escar] A miracle.
[Jaam] And maybe an antique?
[CP] Looking at TLOT- Why are they still here?
[TLOT] I refer you again to my earlier comment about them living here.
[Steve] Snickers-
[CP] Tosses the thumb drive at Notch-
-The drive lands on Flux's stomach.
[Notch] Easy with that!
[Pi] Don't throw it!
[CP] - I'm going back to my wife
[Flux] Twitches a little-
[Notch] Flux... we have your seed. You're safe now.
[Flux] Her eyes open a little- Notch?
[Notch] Doesn't have a free hand to hand it to her- It's right there - inclines his head-
[Flux] Looks down and releases her grip on his shirt to pick it up, there's a slight thrum of energy as she connects with her seed-
[TLOT] Now no one can take it away from you.
[Flux] - Thank you- She rests her head against Notch
[Lie] It's super early in the morning but she's out for a walk with her vulpix's.  The sun has barely risen and she's wandering towards Hera's bay-
[Sweet Alex] Is sitting on her porch kicking her feet and drinking from a small mug. - Good morning Lie!
[Lie] - Morning!  Looks like you're comfy
[Sweet Alex] Yep. Just relaxing until it's light enough to work in the garden.
[Lie] - Need any help with the garden?
[Avulpix] Runs over and sniffs at Sweet Alex-
[Sweet Alex] Maybe? Doc gave me some weird stuff called korm, I think? It's really pretty. The seeds are all different colors.
[Lie] - Oh!  Corn!  Yeah, I helped them pick out the seeds when we were last out in the real world
[Sweet Alex] Pulls out the handful of little kernals - these are from, out there?
[Lie] - Yeah, it's a very common food out there
[Sweet Alex] If you want to give them a head start... anywhere is good. Please?
[Lie] - Sure, is there anyplace you don't want them?
[Sweet Alex] Smiles - inside the house?
[Mix] -Swoosh past goes the Mix-
[Mix] -Screeeech. turn back around and bounce up to them- Hey!
[Sweet Alex] Hey Mix! You're up early. Have you taken to jogging as well?
[Lie] - Morning Mix
[Rvulpix] Hides behind Lie's legs-
[Lie] Takes the corn- I think I'll plant these on the bay side of the house
[Sweet Alex] That would be nice. Thank you! So what else is new guys?
[Mix] I've just got so much-- What's that? *scoot in to look at the corn
[Sweet Alex] Its a vegetable - hushed voice- It's from the real world.
[Mix] Oh! That's cool. *head tilt
[Mix] What kind of veggie?
[Sweet Alex] I'm not sure, but I heard it explodes if you get it super hot!
[Lie] - This is just one variant of it.  I know both of you have had popcorn, this is what it's made from- She begins planting
[Mix] Oh! That's cool! Kind of like the tumbleweeds back home... Or the bomb spores.... *distant look before slight laugh and shake head
[Sweet Alex] What's a tumbleweed? Do they push you over? Like slime blocks?
[Lie] - No, it's a plant that uproots itself to find a better place to be and rolls along with the wind
[Mix] Kind of like... Really dry wheat balls?
[Sweet Alex] That sounds neat! If it's a really dry plant that moves, maybe the baby dragons could chase and play and eat them?
[Lie] Pauses- Not a bad idea
[Mix] Hmm..., I don't know If I have anymore of mine.... * shift through inventory a bit
[Lie] - That's okay Mix, I can always make some
[Mix] Alright! I have too much stuff in my inventory anyway. ... Mmm.. Maybe my bag... I just sort of tossed things in there....
[Sweet Alex] Watches intently to see what Mix tosses out-
[Sweet Alex] Oh! Mix, how are the Lightfeet faring?
[Mix] -Finally pops out a crumbly orb of, crumbly plant matter it looks like. It's definitely not a normal tumbleweed, that's for sure- Uh... Hm. I think it's this? But the name is different...
[Mix] -Looks up- Oh! They're fine! I got them rounded up, but I'm uh... Not the best at building really so making them a home is really slow going...
[Lie] Finishes  planting the seeds- There we go, that should do it
[AVulpix] Starts rolling around in the dirt, getting all dirty-
[Sweet Alex] Looks over at the little green shoots- good luck to them! Good little plants! Mix? Do you want help with the building?
[Crim] - hears voices and comes looking for them.
[Sweet Alex] Squints- I see red. Is that Gk over there?
[Lie] - Ummm, I don't think so?
[Mix] -tosses the weedy ball in hands a bit before turning to look at the approaching red mass. completely forgetting Sweet Alex had asked anything-
[Sweet Alex] Takes the mass of weeds - This is neat!
[Crim] - comes scuttling over on all 6 legs. He's bigger than before.
[Sweet Alex] It's a cute little dragon! I haven't met this one. Hello!
-It's item name is Fire Weed. Perhaps it lights on fire? Who knows-
[Mix] These were all over the Hollow, you'd rack them up in your inventory slowly but surely....
[Lie] - Oh Crim!  You've gotten bigger!
[Sweet Alex] Their name is Crim? Awwww
[Crim] - stands up and gives a toothy smile. - Yes! Me big now!
[Mix] Cool! Nice colors..
[Sweet Alex] Yes you are! And well spoken.
[Crim] - waves at Sweet Alex - Hi hi, I'm Crim.
[RVulpix] Just hides behind Lie some more-
[AVulpix] Trots by nearly black with dirt-
[Lie] Sighs as she looks at her pokemon- Looks like somebody needs a bath...
[Sweet Alex] I'm Sweet Alex. Nice to meet you!
[Crim] - tips head in confusion - What bath?
[Lie] - It's how most animals get clean.  Usually with water
[Mix] Is where you go in water and scrub scrub scrub.
[Crim] Water? Not with tounge?
[Sweet Alex] Does water hurt you Crim? The Ender dragons can't even touch it.
[Lie] - It depends, most animals will use their tongue, but us humans use water
[Sweet Alex] And most of the Herobrines like a lava bath.
[Crim] - thinks - Lava? Warm soft rock?
[Crim] Water.... Blue sting stuff?
[Lie] - Hot soft rock
[Sweet Alex] It's red and orange and goopy? So water hurts you? Okay.
[Crim] - nods - Lava warm & soft, good to sleep in. Also tastie. - licks lips.
[Lie] - ...  Okay then
[Sweet Alex] Holds up the tumbleweed- Lie? Could you mix this with a nether plant? Make it red and soft like netherwort for our friend?
[Lie] - I can try- She takes the plant and begins focusing
[Crim] - stands on back legs to watch
[Lie] The plant  shifts to red and gets a bit softer- Is this okay?- She puts it down
[Mix] -bouncing on heels a bit-
-The ruddy block looks like a star from the sides and top and the wind catches it slightly. Making it scoot enticingly along.
[Sweet Alex] Cool! Better make more then one though. In case it gets away! - chuckles
[Crim] - drops down into a crouch, watching the plant move.
-worttumbler- scoot scoot scoot
[Mix] -scratches at shoulder a bit-
[Lie] Focus' on making another one-
[Sweet Alex] Are you okay Mix?
[Crim] - does butt wiggle and creeps toward it
-worttumbler- scoots up against a bit of protruding dirt and goes slightly to the side as the sea breeze catches it-
[Mix] Hm? -Pause in scratch- I think? My back is kinda itchy. But my stone probably isn't done growing.
[Sweet Alex] You're growing a stone? Is that normal?
[Crim] - suddenly pounces on the thing, bitting it. He growls and exhales, only to have the thing burst into flames.
[Mix] -Turns and gestures at the Glowing emerald in between her shoulderblades- Mhmm!
[Lie] - I'm just glad you're doing better Mix
[Sweet Alex] Is looking at the crystal with concern and then jumps at the sudden flames- Crim!
[Crim] - starts biting and chewing it up, as fast as he can.
[Sweet Alex] Oh! Is it tasty?
[Mix] So am I. I was.. really super tired. *watches Crim before producing another weedy mass and setting it down curiously. scoot it toward Crim with foot
[Crim] - nods as he finishes it. He sees the new one and starts stalking it.
[Sweet Alex] Is it okay for him to have that one Mix? It looks spiky.
[Lie] Has made a couple more wortweeds-
[Crim] - stands up, does a hopping prance then leaps on it. This time he doesn't bite it, just claw at it.
[Crim] - rolls over as the wortweed crumbles, landing near Sweet Alex on his back.
[Sweet Alex] Goes for the belly rub with a giggle-
-There's a soft snuffling noise from the back of the house-
[AVulpix] Hears the noise and runs around to the back side- Vul?
[Crim] - snorts and wiggles around for a few, before rolling over. He's rumbling softly.
[Mix] -Seems to tune back in on everything and hums- Huh?
[Sweet Alex] You're such a nice dragon-
[Crim] - still rumbling - Crim good.
-A rather large and oddly shaped shadow leans around the side of the house with a quick snuffling noise and then a loud growl.-
[Gk] growls-  I smell weird male dragon...
[Lie] - So, any plans for today Mix?
[AVulpix] - Vul!  Vul!
[Mix] Mostly been going around doing everything! So much to do! So much to see...  Also have to hunt NK down...
[Sweet Alex] Flicks his tiny nose as he gets too close to her and Crim to sniff the smaller dragon- Gk!
[Gk] Grrrrrrr
[Crim] - scrambles to his feet, backing up.
[Lie] - GK, he's still young...
[Sweet Alex] Stands and puts her hands on her hips- Gk! You behave! He's just a baby and he hasn't even got any wings!
[Gk] Coils up a little but he's still frowning. - E's a nether dragon...
[Lie] - All the more reason for you to be nice to him, he needs a mentor
[Sweet Alex] And you hate the Nether!
[Gk] Grumbles-
[Crim] - growls softly as smoke puffs out his nose. - Crim good!
[Gk] Snorts and spits a skinny stream of pure lava in a long arc into the water nearby, making a tiny patch pop and boil-
[Sweet Alex] Stop that. You know he's no threat to you.
[Mix] Baby. -Just turns a bit and looks off into the distance, starting to get antsy again-
[Crim] - turns to watch, then hunkers down. More smoke is rolling out his nose.
[Gk] Ruffles his tentacle wings like an aggravated chicken.
[Sweet Alex] You be nice Gk.... or else!
[Lie] - Do I need to get Endrea?
[Gk] Or else what?
[Sweet Alex] I... I won't make you anymore cookies!
[Gk] Sharp hiss and hunkers down- I don't like this....
[Crim] - lunges forward and spits a little ball of fire at GK.
[Gk] His head shoots out like a viper and he eats the incoming ball, there's a moment of pregnant silence and then he lets out a gigantic burp-
[Sweet Alex] Crim!
[Crim] - flinches, then turns tail and runs towards the trees.
[Sweet Alex] Dashes after him - Crim! Come back!
[Gk] Looks even more annoyed now- runt...
[Lie] - GK why?
[Gk] He went after me first. I'm not apologizing.
[Crim] - climbs up the nearest tree and hides in the leaves.
[Sweet Alex] Stands at the foot of the tree - It's okay! You're safe! Just don't go picking fights with bigger dragons like that!
[Lie] - GK he's a baby still, it's like if Oak attacks you, or Ashe
[Gk] Swishes his tail - Oak and Ashe are not nether dragons...
[Lie] - Why does that make a difference, hadn't you wanted to meet another Nether dragon?  I seem to recall you saying that at one point
[Crim] - crawls higher up - No. Big biter bad.
[Gk] Back then... I just wanted to know I wasn't alone... not just some.. freak...
[Sweet Alex] He can be. But he's also my friend. He's probably just jealous.
[Lie] - So you'll act an uncle to some but not others?  GK, Crim has nobody, we found him on the other seed.  He doesn't have a parental figure
[Crim] - hiding - No, he like other bigs. Bite, step, mean. Crim won't let bite or steps.
[Gk] Has the very slightest hint of shame on his goat like features and harrumphs.
[Lie] - Don't make him feel like an outcast GK
[Sweet Alex] he's just emotional, he lets his instincts get the better of him sometimes
[Gk] Looks away- I'm old Lie... Don't need some pup to take me out. Gotta show I'm still heathy enough to fight....
[Lie] - There are other ways GK
[Gk] Curls up so he doesn't have to look at anyone-
[Sweet Alex] Crim? Please come down. I won't let Gk hurt you. He cares about his friendship with me too much for that
[Lie] - GK, not every leader earns their position by being the strongest.  Don't you hear how Sweet Alex is describing you?  You don't need to fight any of them
[Crim] - snorts, but slowly crawls down. Lands next to her.
[Gk] Ruffles his wings, he's obviously unsettled-
[Lie] - Do you really want to disappoint Sweet Alex?  Endrea?  The little ones?
[Sweet Alex] Hugs Crim around the neck- you're okay
[Gk] Tiny growl
[Crim] rumbles - Crim good.
[Lie] - Don't confuse the child GK, be there for him like you are for Ashe, for Willow and Oak, how you were there for Endrea
[Gk] Very quietly- I'll think about it...
[Lie] - I know you'll make the right choice
[Gk] more grumbling. But he does show his face under one wing-
[Lie] - I have some trading to do in the village, I'll check in on you later, okay?
[Gk] Snarky comment too quiet to hear. Probably along the lines of 'yes mom'.
[Lie] - I can still hear you mentally GK
[Sweet Alex] Scratches Crim under the chin- Shall we go back and introduce you properly?
[Gk] Pppppppthhhh-
[Crim] - sighs but nods
[Sweet Alex] Leads Crim back over to Gk and Mix-
[Gk] Watches Crim from under his wing-
[Sweet Alex] Change! You're scaring him-
[Gk] Snort!
[Sweet Alex] Gk.....
[Gk] Shifts back to his human form. He's a rather small brine. Him and Sweet Alex are only a block and a half tall each. His hands are in his pockets and his expression is a bit sour-
[Crim] You like others, big and small. No scare Crim, I goods.
[Gk] We'll see. I'm the designated babysitter around here, and if I'm sitting, what I say goes.
[Crim] - frowns - Then no steps, no bites. Crim goods but not allow hurts again.
[Gk] Don't attack me a again and I won't.
[Crim] No scares then.
[Gk] Grumbles - no scares...
[Sweet Alex] Good. And I'll be watching to make sure you keep that promise.
[Gk] Grumpy noises-
[Crim] - nods - Will tries hard. - rumble purrs.
-Bird noises, Firebird is looking for the CN at Lie's house-
[CN] Is working on making another wooden sword at a crafting table in the workroom-
[Firebird] -Plops a bit and fiddles door before hopping inside-
[CN] - Birdy!
[Firebird] -Chirp-
-Firebird scuttles up to CN-
[CN] Turns back towards the crafting table- I have to make another sword...  Mine broke...  Again...
[Firebird] -Plop head against table, thoughtful look as shuffle wings- ... Why not make a better sword with higher durability?
[CN] - They're too heavy- He pulls the new wooden sword off of the table
[Firebird] Fair enough... What about Unbreaking enchantments?
[CN] Shrugs- I don't know how
[Firebird] Here, I'll help. Lets go over to the enchanting table and see if it offers that..
[CN] Carries the sword over to the floating book and grows a bit nervous as it turns towards him-
[Firebird] Don't worry kiddo, here, set the sword here. *Gesture before tapping the book a bit
[CN] Does so and then jumps back a little-
[Firebird] Lets see... Lets see... Efficiency... No.... Knockback...
[CN] - What do those do?
[Firebird] Effeciency is meant for tools. Makes things work faster.. Knockback sends whatever you hit further. ...Bane of arthropods? Huh. Still no... Ah! Here's unbreaking... Can't tell what version though...
[CN] - Arthropods?
[Firebird] ..I think that's spiders. Not sure.
[Firebird] -Enchants sword with unbreaking-
[CN] Gasps- It's shiny!
[Firebird] Mhmm! *Return sword to CN
[CN] Swings it a couple of times, his eyes focused on it's shininess-
[CN] - So what did you do to it?
[Firebird] Enchanted it with unbreaking. It'll take longer to break now, so you won't have to build a new one anytime soon bud.
[CN] - Cool!  So what are we doing today?
[Firebird] Dunno, anything you want to do? I didn't plan anything today.
[CN] Shrugs- Lie went out early and I don't know where the big meanie is...
[Firebird] I could take you for a fly.
[CN] Perks up- You could?
[Firebird] Mhmm!
[CN] - Let's go!  Let's go!
[Firebird] I'm pretty sure I can lift you.
[CN] Bounces a bit eagerly-
[Firebird] Well lets go outside! *scuttle scuttle
[CN] Puts the new sword in his inventory and follows-
[Firebird] -Swoosh up into the air outside, thoughtfully staring at CN-
[CN] - So how will you carry me?
[Firebird] Like this! *swoop down and hook talons around CN's shoulders, lifting him up into the air
[CN] Yelps but settles down quickly as the ground passes beneath them-
[Firebird] Nothing like being in the air...
[CN] - ...  Could I learn how to do this on my own?
[Firebird] Hm... Not sure... You'd have to ask Doc, probably.
[CN] Huffs and pouts a little-
[Firebird] Hmmm? What's wrong? Don't like talking to Doc? *droop head to look at CN while flying
[CN] - They led to DN being killed...  He was my friend...
[Firebird] He was downright insufferable to everyone else, CN. You just got lucky, I guess... *lift head and rise some more in the air
[CN] Spots familiar sights from above- Everybody looks so small...
[Firebird] Yeah...  It's also so quiet up here.
[CN] - Huh, I guess your right...  It's always noisy and busy around Lie's house
[Firebird] This is probably the quietest spot, beyond maybe at the bottom of the ocean? Dunno.
[Firebird] I used to fly a lot on my seed. Just watch everything.
[CN] - I don't know any other seeds...  Well, there's the one with all the other NOTCH's... But otherwise, this is the only place I've been
[Firebird] You could go exploring, if you wanted.
[CN] - I'm not strong enough...  The mobs would just end up killing me
[Firebird] Hm.... With company then.
[CN] - But who?  Lie is busy with all of her plants and animals, and Big Meanie is out of the question...
[Firebird] Make some friends and wander. I might, maybe.
[CN] - But everyone around my age doesn't want to leave the village!
[Firebird] Then fuck them. *soft bird snort and swoop down a bit
[CN] - Big Meanie says that word a lot...  What does it mean?
[Firebird] Depends how it's used. Could be rude, or sexual.
[CN] - I don't understand...
[Firebird] Maybe when you're older.
[CN] - Okay, where are we going?
[Firebird] Just around. You want somewhere specific?
[CN] Shakes his head-
[Firebird] Alright. -Swoooosh
[CN] Is just looking at everything-

Dark Reunion to Light pt.1
After the tragedy surrounding the Korai on Run-fa. Young warrior Gizemeh Notoki works to find both himself and try to gain a balance with the demon within. Namely a nanotech ghost named Kuro-sa.
After his encounter with the observer, Gizemeh left the ruins of his home village once again and headed south. Having to truly leave his home permanently now left a feeling of loss in his heart. Still wishing he was able to do something about the attack of Kurai. And now burdened by being the host of this dark thing living inside his very being. It was almost too much for any human to bear. But then he heard its voice. It seemed dark and ravaging but yet almost seemed feminine. “Being in your body Notoki, I can feel your emotions. Now matter how stoic you were trained to be, you can’t hide your heart.” She spoke into Gizemeh’s thoughts. He could clearly hear her, but to the world he’d be talking to himself unless they knew. She was right. Gizemeh couldn’t hide that deep down he was still in anguish at losing everyone he knew. As he walked down the path he could only think more and more about his comrades. And his teacher. Everything was going so well, and while even knowing he had become a prodigy among the Korai. He still wonders why he was saved from the onslaught, but reluctantly knows he has a better purpose waiting for him. But for now he follows a roadway south of Korai. His teacher spoke of a people that lived far south that were very peaceful. And mentioned to seek them out if he had ever lost his way. Though as he had gotten close to the village in question, Kuro-sa felt a bit unnerved and jolted at Gizemeh’s notions to urge him to stop for a moment. “Notoki. I feel a presence. It’s strange yet, familiar. It makes me uneasy. I advise proceeding with caution.” She says to him. Urging him to become alert as he presses on, but was stopped on the path by two approaching figures. When they came into view. They’re bodies were very stout and they’re large presence was intimidating yet looked like they were carrying much weight. Wearing armor of a more oriental look, they both carried staves that matched the other like they were standard staff weapons. In the open spots of their armor was not under cloth but fur. White or black fur shown as the light shown over them, as well as revealing under their straw hats to have animalistic faces. These were definitely not human, though its already been known that non human races exist amidst all of Grandia. They approached and stopped in Gizemeh’s path and without hesitation yelled a demand at him with a voice so boisterous. “Halt wanderer, we cannot allow to travel further this way.” His voice deep and carried with the wind. Gizemeh gave a traditional bow of greeting to the two. “I mean no harm. I only seek refuge in the village.” Inside, Kuro-sa had a feeling things might turn violent. She used her energy to stimulate his to keep him alert and on guard. “We cannot allow you in the Pandun village. A trusted sage warned us of a presence of negative energies approaching. Being this close I can feel it too. You bode too much ill will to proceed. Turn back at once! If you don’t, we have been allowed to use force if we must.” After saying his words. Both of these large guards get into a defensive combat stance with their staves. “So you are the Pandun. I have only heard tales of your people. Please. I do not wish to fight.” Gizemeh says to them as he gets into an unarmed stance. Not wanting to draw blades against those he wants as allies. The Pandun are an humanoid race of pandas. I expected some animal species of the world once before to become their own people here. But even I didn’t expect pandas. They are traditionally kind to all. But they have gotten a knack for using their own inner energies as a way to combat both darkness and negativity. Becoming gifted healers with their use of life energies and with their new training, have become gifted fighters and some are really good drinkers or cooks. They’re quite a fun lot to be around if you’re on their good side. “Then you have sealed your fate.” One pandun says as he sprints up to Gizemeh, going for an overhead attack with his stave. Easily seen by Gizemeh who blocks it with his hands, feeling the strength of the large pandun bear down on him only to catch the other pandun flanking him from the corner of his eye. Using his strength, Gizemeh pushes off his clasher to dodge the other pandun.
“We will give you one last chance to stand down and turn away, warrior.” Said the pandun with a low growl. “I cannot do that. I have nowhere else to turn to. The only path I can follow now leads here.” Gizemeh tries to explain, still standing in his defensive stance. “Then you will either be maimed or perish here.” Says the pandun as they both charge at Gizemeh. The first one swinging his staff for a blow towards Gizemeh’s midsection. Gizemeh of course blocks it with his hands but is then blindsided by the other pandun. Taking a blow to the shoulder and staggering him. Keeping his balance Gizemeh readies again. But to his surprise he is already attacked by both in synchronisation. Quickly striking at Gizemeh’s legs and he tries to dodge but takes an upper body blow from the other. Unable to defend he is attacked both for blow, up and down until he is quickly battered. Even amongst his now many bruises, Gizemeh doesn’t falter to show his great amount of will. But his energy is depleted and sees himself fading. The blows were powerful and rattling and one more strike from the pandun had sealed the deal, knocking Gizemeh to the ground. The fatigue from his journey adding up to this, he lacked the energy to stand. Glancing at the pandun that now stood over him, he falls. Passing out on the ground where he lay. The panduns look to each other. Giving a nod and prepares to walk back to their village. When one of them stop. Feeling something ominous on the air. “Wait. Something's not quite right.” He says, turning back around to gaze upon Gizemeh’s unconscious body. Backstepping from it his eyes open in almost terror. Gizemeh’s white uniform slowly darkens. Turning from its bright white to a very dark shade of green and blue hues. His face even darkening as well. From his body rose an aura of darkness that then made these pandun get into a defensive stance of their own. “What madness or sorcery is this? What’s happening?” One pandun asked as Gizemeh slowly began to stand up. Slowly and eerily he rose from the ground but as he did. A different voice chuckled and spoke from him. “Hmhmhmhm. You should have listened to him while you had the chance. He showed much restrained just for your regard.” The being spoke before greeting the pandun with bright purple eyes on Gizemeh’s darkened facade. “I am the negative energy that you felt, pandun. A shade that people have feared for years.” The figure loomed slowly towards the pandun. Still speaking to them, it’s voice echoed slightly. “I go by the name Kuro-sa. And unlike my host who shows real good will and restraint. I hold no such qualms!!” It’s voice screeched, echoing even to the village in the distance. Urging its residence to retreat into their homes. All but one, who began making their way outside the village. The two pandun guardsmen were struck with shock and terror. Leaving them vulnerable. And Kuro-sa would not hesitate on this. In a flash of shadow it strikes at one of the pandun, wounding them in the shoulders with Gizemeh’s sword. The pandun shambling to the ground in pain, but then Kuro-sa wastes no time turning its attention to the other.
Using both of Gizemeh’s blades, it tosses them to both sides of the pandun, sticking them blade in to the ground. An energy lashes from the blades and attacks the pandun, grasping him in black chains to keep him still and restrained. “And now as your friend is able to watch. I will use a technique that has been known to be feared, even by your people. Modified by my power!” Kuro-sa boasts as it holds up a hand and it begins to get engulfed by a dark aura of energy. “I knew that energy seemed familiar.” A voice called out. Near robotic and a bit echoey, this voice stopped Kuro-sa in its tracks. The glow fading from the hand it held ready as well as the chains that held the pandun in place. The pandun shambles over to his comrade to make sure he was alive. Indeed hurt, the maimed pandun was alive. The other figure came into view. He was floating and oddly, was nothing more than an amalgamation of emerald colored crystal in a humanoid shape. And wearing a monk’s garb. Two yellow dots on the ‘face’ of this man indicated eyes and sight and his voice echoes from his personage with no indication of a mouth of which to speak. And while the two were about to converse, the two pandun managed to escape back towards their village to seek medical attention. And this new figure’s attention fixates on Kuro-sa. “It’s been quite some time since I have seen you. It’s been quite some time. I had begun to think those humans have destroyed you.” Asked the green man. His eyes glowed brighter to his voice as he spoke. “Destroyed me?! Those humans cursed my very essence! I can’t go anywhere without one of them being a host for my energy. This is their last surviving member. What would know Guanga?” Scoffed Kuro-sa amidst its near unending anger. “Perhaps I can help you.” Pleaded this crystalline man named Guanga “Help me?! If you wanted to help, why haven’t you come?! I know we were both born in the same bomirian lab. I wanted to think you were a brother of mine! But you left me to those heathens to be used as a tool once again!!” Yelled Kuro-sa as it charged at Guanga with full intent to attack. But Kuro-sa’s effort was in vain as Guanga immediately counters with a sheen of light energy. Stopping Kuro-sa’s attack in a clash, but took this moment to look at Kuro-sa in an analytical manner. And he noticed something. “I can understand your anger. But now is the time to look past that.” Guanga pleaded to his dark counterpart in midst their clash. Their energies of light and dark creating sparks of lightning that burrow into the ground next to them. “You won’t understand until you’ve been imprisoned and used for decades!” Kuro-sa lashed out. And it’s dark energy visibly spiking against Guanga who was holding firm against the power. “And for that I am sorry. But I know what I can do. A apologize in advance for this.” Guanga uttered in a sense of deep regret. As an energy sheened throughout his body before exploding in a large flash of light that staggers Kuro-sa greatly. In that moment, Guanga had thrusts his ‘arms’ forward in palm thrusting motions. Sending some shards of himself and stick into Kuro-sa before they glowed brightly. Kuro-sa screams in pain and falls to the ground as if being shocked by a police officer’s taser. Kuro-sa’s scream echoes along the valley before falling unconscious. After which Gizemeh’s attire changes back to its normal white and he lay completely out cold on the ground beneath Guanga.
