one thing about lon'qu is that he is actually just so fucking funny all the time

One of the things I really like about YTTD is that it made me like the characters I'd normally dislike. I'm talking about Gin and Kanna in particular, actually. Yeah, I can hear it - "What?? What's there to hate about those two?" Well...

I don't normally like the "kid sidekick" characters in these kinds of stories. This is for a lot of reasons, so I'll just go over them. First, it's because I'm deeply uncomfortable with the idea of a child even being in a murder death kill game (the scientific term). Either they're protected by the "no child deaths" rule, in which case there's no tension... or they are going to die, which is absolutely horrible. (People frequently misunderstand what makes a story "dark" and how that makes it good - child death may be dark, but it isn't fun to read about. I'll only accept it if done really well.)

Second, I find these characters kind of annoying. Not because I'm a child hater or something, I love kids and I think everything they do is awesome, but because they're just kind of... bland characters. Normally their only personality traits are "cute" and "useless", which... isn't exactly the most thrilling or engaging of characters. I certainly don't want them to die, but I'm not particularly like "wow i love this character!"

Both Gin and Kanna also have separate traits that I normally dislike. Gin is the "weird gimmick" character - I was immediately put off by the "roleplaying as a catdog" thing, because I think gimmick personality characters aren't particularly interesting either. Kanna is the "cries and is always upset" kind of character (at first), which I dislike not because I hate sad people, but like I said, these characters tend to be very one-note and bland, which is possibly the worst thing you can do with a character. (Hell, for a tangent - YTTD managed to take Mishima's fairly one-note gimmick of "haha he's evil looking but actually nice" and stretch it well so I actually liked him too.)

So I wasn't particularly thrilled, as I said, with these two at first. But over the course of the story, I grew to become really fond of the two of them. Gin turned out to be not just a gimmick character - he has a lot of heart and bravery, best shown in the climax of 3-1B where he willingly walks into a deathtrap so that no one else has to. That's one courageous little kid! And, yeah, his gimmick is still a little weird, but it feels like a natural part of his character now. (The reveal in Ch3 that he's autistic made a lot of sense to me; I actually knew a kid who had the same "can't leave the house without the right outfit" problem.) Gin is basically, behind Sara, the emotional heart of the group now and I love it.

Kanna took a while for me, but her growth was amazing too. She went from a scared, crying little girl to... a scared little girl who understands her own weakness and strives to overcome it. Watching her redeem Sou was without a doubt the best plotline in the entire game so far for me. In addition, her overcoming her destructive desire to die for other people was extremely wholesome. All of this came to a head in Ch3, where Midori mocks her for the fact that her brother is now dead too. The old Kanna would have cried or something, but instead Kanna stands up to Midori and admits her weakness, always needing people to look out for her... but she's going to become stronger so she won't need that help anymore. And she knows that her siblings are watching over her as she grows as a person.

Both of these characters started out as my least favorites and now I love them so much. Thank you, Nankidai.
