hi!! i’m a newbie goth lolita and i’ve only ever planned basic coords that are highschool dress code appropriate for my school but still mana sama esc. It’s a hobby i’m fond of!! i wanna do a ouji/lolita theme for my prom date and i and i had something like this in mind… please leave some concrit or suggestions to make this fit more into the lolita or ouji standard (we will both have the same necklace)
i was deciding on whether i should embroider roses at the bottom of the dress or not, too..

I did it... I wore casual Lolita to work...! In celebration of the Teddy Bear's Picnic, of course~ No one pointed and shunned me, and the children's librarian and singer liked it, so my worst fears did NOT come true and it was generally super pleasant~

Constructive Criticism
One of the more interesting parts of online culture is the need to generate a reaction that brings engagement. At the point we are at on the internet all the major websites thrive on engagement to the point detriment as the “algorithm” will determine how much exposure your posts gets. In this generating a conversation around yourself only serves to help you, and in Lolita the best way to do this…

After seeing Fluffy Kawaii Jo's video about making a coord with pieces from HT, and watching Cupcake Kamisama's video on why Rockabilly dresses can't really be used in EGL, I decided to at least take a peek in my local HT.
I was honestly surprised, I feel the blouse and skirt are rather cute and I was able to go home with a coord today.
Shoes not pictured because I can't fathom putting shoes on my bed.
There are a few things I'd change with the pieces to make them better suited for lolita fashion.
I want to make lace to go along the bottom hem of the skirt, so I'll probably design a cherry lace trim to use for that, and make lace using the same color thread/s for the headdress.
I also need to make bracelets or wrist cuffs. I have my time cut out for me!
Brands:
Blouse, Skirt: Sweet Society
Hat: vintage
Basket bag: Longaberger (of all things! I felt it looked great in a few more mature sweet coords I did back in the day, and I like it here too).
Lace Choker: hand tatted by me. I'll likely make something with a better match in the next few months.
Bloomers: Some hand-me-down Taobao bloomers that were missing the tag when I got them. They're quite comfy so I hope they last me a long time.
Socks: Hot Topic. I realized after getting home that the lace is horrible- I didn't scrutinize them enough in the store. I'll make sock toppers, so in the end it won't be a deal breaker.
Concrit welcome but keep in mind that I'm also being critical of the coord, so different insight than what I've shared would be optimal.
Here's some of the problem areas I've already picked up on and am trying to figure out.
Please don't mind the black ribbon on the hat! I'm trying to tie together the shoes, bag, and hair accessory all together since not much is left of my old collection. The brown natural material of the hat and bag, the black of the hat's ribbon and my black shoes, it's imperfect, but it's a start. After I make a better hair accessory, I'll try tying a black velvet bow under the blouse's collar to match the shoes instead of relying on the hat.
I know I need at least some sort of wrist accessory. I've already raided my jewelry drawer, so I'm hoping to luck into some good jewelry.

From the same post, secrets 114.. a true portrayal of what it feels like to scroll through some of the older forums for egl fashion. followed by a small psa for my blog, as i continue to post.
Back then, roris would send in secret submissions talking about their communities, exposing 'itas' or girls they thought weren't good enough. A lot of the content includes transphobia, fatphobia and racism... while I have no intention of erasing the past, I do think it's important to leave these things buried. Lolita fashion is about, amongst other things, a sweetness that defies the bitter things we face as we grow as humans.
I believe we should encourage concrit and discussion of how to make coords look best. I don't believe this relates AT ALL to someone's weight, physical appearance or identity.
I cannot, with this mindset, repost and share with you all any of the content with girls' "outfits" being mocked. Let's be nostalgic without being blind to the faults of the time..
everyone is welcome here. I hope from the bottom of my heart you enjoy my posts.

lolita fashion zine: Revue de Rosé from Rosé Forêt (link) 🌹
If anyone has recommendations for lolita fashion zines I would love to hear them! 🌸
Got these in the mail today- they’re super cute, but unfortunately very short; especially compared to other lolita zines like Moonbow or JBTK. However the art/photos are really nice imo! I like the concrit essay in the first one too. The first zine has more essays and photos, the second more art and an interview with a jewelry shop owner. I really wish they had more content but hopefully they’ll be able to make future issues longer!

Just some post-con thoughts about new people in the lolita community.
Anime and comic conventions are a really cool environment, where wearing unique or unconventional clothing is more common than your everyday clothing.
People use this environment different ways. For many of us, it was the first time we saw or the first time we tried to wear lolita fashion. Lolita isn't cosplay, but an environment where no one is going to ask, "wow, what the fuck are you wearing?" is an environment that a lot of people use to try out lolita for the first time. And if you're at a convention, no matter how established you are in lolita, it's important to remember that for many people, this is their first time wearing lolita fashion or lolita-adjacent fashion.
I've said before and I will maintain that you should not offer concrit at a convention to someone you don't know. If you don't have something nice to say about their look, you shouldn't be saying anything about their look. A lot of people are there to have fun, try something new, and maybe see if they like this fashion. There's a lot of people in coords that they call lolita that don't even barely fit the definition.
And that's fine. It's really, completely fine.
I've once been told, "you need to ask yourself, am I acting like this person has wronged me, when in fact they are just simply wrong?" Is someone's bad lolita attempt actually harming you? Or is it just not a good example of lolita fashion?
Okay, "But they make me look bad when they--" Wow, okay, I'm sorry that your coord is so shoddy that someone else doing it badly sucks all the goodness out of your coord and makes you bad. Maybe you should make a better coord that doesn't start sucking just because someone's wearing that And Romeo replica. Maybe if you wore lolita better then you wouldn't feel threatened by someone in Milanoo.
I have no patience for that argument.
If someone is genuinely misrepresenting your art, yeah, say something. Shout out to my friend who organized an army of lolita-wearers to go up to one booth at Fanime and demand that they take the "lolita" tag off their panties that said "daddy" on them. That was quite epic. If your portrayal of lolita is actively harmful to the community that's one thing, But if someone just doesn't look 100% their best? Are they wronging you, or do you just think they're wrong?
If I was going to indulge that argument that someone's bad representation of lolita hurts you in the real world, for just a single sentence? Even if that's so, most people wearing coordinates at conventions never wear them anywhere else. So. You can't even say that they're making you look bad in the real world when you'll never see them in the real world. So maybe that argument doesn't really work anyway.
Ask yourself the effort test: Did this person put enough effort into this coordinate that they could have made a good one, if they'd been directed in the right way? Did someone work really hard on this look and just fucked it up because they didn't have a lolita mentor to steer their online fingers away from Diamond Honey's questionable things?
If they didn't, that's ALSO FINE. It's a con! People are there to have FUN! But if they did put in effort, pay attention to that. Maybe this is a person who did it wrong, and who just didn't know everything you know. Is it better for you to provide resources and help them try better next time, or to crap talk them so that they don't try next time?
If one bad coord impacts the community such to the point that it's okay to hate it just because it wasn't up to your standards, then what have you done for the community to make sure that people can achieve your standards? If a bad coord hurts you, tell me what you've done to help people not make bad coords. How have you shared the information of good coordinate-making with the newbie lolita community.
People get interested in the lolita rules and guidelines because they are interested in lolita. People stay interested in lolita because people offer them encouragement and include them. If you see someone in a bad coord and you say, "Wow, in three years, she's going to be so utterly embarrassed by that look," then don't shoot her down. Give her a chance to stay in the fashion for three years and be embarrassed about her past. Don't boot her out now.
To their face, behind their back, whatever; if you bring yourself up by bringing other people down, I have some amazing news for you, and that's that you don't have to be that way and life is a lot more fun when you aren't that way.
Or, if we want to bring back a classic:
it's okay to not like people's coords at the anime con it's okay but don't be a dick about it it's okay to not like coords, but don't be a dick about the coords you don't like.

i used to be really into lolita fashion and i still follow a couple communities occasionally but lately it's struck me as really...idk what the right word is maybe someone else will know. outfits posted with apologies or explanations for perceived inadequacies or with "concrit accepted!" attached as a way to signal that you know it isn't perfect, that you're sure someone else could do it better. "sorry for my shoes!" "i know my hair looks bad!" "am i too tall for this dress?" "i have a better petticoat coming, i promise!" like God i know it's the culture of this community and the compulsion to fit in and to do it Right and the fear of being "ita" and getting mocked on 4chan boards but i promise. I promise you can just wear sneakers. You can just wear your natural hair. You can wear what you want without killing yourself about it and bending over backwards to please people who couldnt give two shits about you either way. Like what is the point when you are so fucking afraid constantly and you always feel like an outsider and you can never enjoy what you have because you're thinking about how you could be Better no matter what

For your lolita fashion ask (thank you for putting it together btw!): 6, 7, 8, 11
Ofc!! Thank you for sharing + asking!
6. How has the way you wear lolita changed since you've been in the fashion?
Coording wise, now I'm pulling from major colors within prints instead of minor colors present! I used to pull from obscure minor accents in the prints which while fun was not always so successful, especially starting out with limited wardrobe and knowledge.
Tumblr media
(Pic from my first meet/second coord! I also finally trimmed the bangs in this wig LOL)
Unfortunately, last year I also got into the habit of not making as many accessories. I'm hoping to correct that and make more hair pieces like fascinators or canotiers, clips, and wrist cuffs
8. What are some details you wish to see more of?
Aside from more variations in cuts/construction and for my own selfish reasons, I would love to see some brown tabby cat representation! I often see black, white, tuxedo, and orange tabby but rarely a fully brown tabby, no white on the underside
11. What is your lolita pet peeve?
Seeing people give concrit that don't post any of their own lolita coords tbh! It's hard to know where they're coming from and how knowledgeable on the subject matter they really are. I notice this is even worse when someone is sharing an old school inspired coord and the concrit given is that those specific elements dont fit the rest of the look (striped socks or brown/black shoes for example, or going for a smaller petticoat and being told to get a 5-6 layer petti)
