Far From Orbit
In which Anakin is obsessed with the holonet and Obi-Wan is exhausted and embarrassed.
─── ❖ ── ✦ ── ❖ ───
Obi-Wan and Anakin were like brothers. Obi-Wan raised him while he himself was still being raised. Obi-Wan was not much older but old enough. It was something he could handle. "-At least that's what they tell me, you often prove them wrong." Obi-Wan signed.
"That sucks bruh." Anakin shrugged, "They lied to you. Ain't cool at all fam." Anakin shook his head, pulling out a lollipop. "Lying ain't the vibe."
Obi-Wan raised an eyebrow then rolled his eyes. "Come on, let's just get this over with." He guided Anakin into the council room.
"Master Obi-Wan, padawan Skywalker." Yoda spoke.
"Yoooo-" Anakin waved. Obi-Wan's head shot down in embarrassment, sighing as he patted Anakin on the back. When he looked up, he felt his face flush at the sight of Yoda's curious expression.
"The sunglasses, he insisted on wearing." Obi-Wan began to explain, "As for the lollipop-"
"Worry not, Obi-Wan." Yoda inturrupted. "Padawan Skywalker, brief your mission, you will." Anakin's head shot up
"I gotchu." Anakin smiled, taking off his sunglasses revealing a little bruise. "Aight, so there we were, straight vibin' and live, laugh, loving, but then-"
Yoda's attention shifted from Anakin to Obi-Wan, Obi-Wan whose jaw had dropped and was flooding with fear and embarrassment. Obi-Wan who was shaking and using all his strength not to inturrupt.
"-then Obi yo-yo was all like, 'No! My feelings,' 'n' up and passes out on me? But I'm very reliable so naturally-"
Yoda looked to Mace Windu and cracked a smile, not just at Skywalker's report but Obi-Wan too. They did believe Obi-Wan capable of training a padawan, but they did not make mention of this. Obi-Wan had always been a nervous little thing, the two knew, he always wanted to be exactly what everyone else wanted to see. And as Anakin failed to fit the mold others wanted as Obi-Wan had, he fell apart.
"I knew I couldn't handle it on my own, but my home boy was up and was woke-"
Obi-Wan face-palmed, his face a bright red as he turned away from Master Yoda. Feeling his stomach twist and turn, he felt so embarrassed. He wanted to cry, so uncomfortable was he that ants were eating him alive. But he couldn't say anything, all he did was grit his teeth as breathing became a little harder.
"-Boom! Successful mission report, down and done, dog!" Anakin put the sunglasses back on, spun in a circle and crossed his arms, striking a super cool battle pose. "The drip is real with you Master Windu, so cool." Anakin complimented him, getting a laugh out of Windu and other council members.
"Very good, Padawan Skywalker." Yoda smiled, entertained by the young boy. "Master Obi-Wan, anything to add, have you?" Yoda looked up and he found the young Jedi clenching his stomach with a look of pure distraught. He was terribly tense.
"No-" He whimpered, feeling a lump in his throat and his face burning. "T-that's all." Obi-Wan's voice squeaked as he tried so hard not to cry. Anakin recognized that sound, he had grown to fear it, his head shot up to look at his master, completely oblivious to his master's dismay until now.
"Master Obi?" Anakin grabbed Obi-Wan's robe, tugging on it slightly. "-are you okay?" He whispered not so quietly. Obi-Wan looked down and cracked a nervous smile, trying so hard to be okay. It was okay, they weren't in trouble. Anakin did what he was asked and everything was okay. His smile twitched as tears started pouring out and Anakin's expression changed instantly. "D-did I do something wrong?" This whisper was true.
Obi-Wan let out another squeak as his heart and mind raced, he couldn't think and he couldn't breath, he couldn't move and he couldn't speak, but everything was okay. Everything was okay he didn't understand why he wasn't okay. Why wasn't he okay? He didn't have any reason not to be okay, so why wasn't he okay? Why couldn't he just be okay? I just want to be okay I don't wanna feel like this-
"Anakin," the friendly voice of Mace Windu spoke, Anakin didn't even notice he had approached until Mace was taking Anakin out of the room.
"Obi-Wan." Yoda spoke, "Lively, Anakin is, but he did what he was asked, did he not?"
Obi-Wan looked up, then looked for Anakin. Looking at the door and realized they had taken Anakin from him without him knowing, without his permission. They took Anakin from him, on instinct, Obi-Wan turned to head out the door to go get his padawan, but Yoda's voice made him stay. "H-he did." Obi-Wan forced out.
"Yet you are upset. Failed, he did not." Yoda looked at Obi-Wan, with patient and understanding eyes. But it was those same eyes that drove Obi-Wan insane.
"I- that's not-" Obi-Wan shook his head, "I can't do this!" He screamed suddenly. "I thought I could do it, Qui-Gon told me I must and it was a task I took upon myself. I thought I could do it, I thought that I could train a padawan but I don't know what I'm doing Master Yoda, I don't know how to deal with him crying for his mother in the night, I don't know how to handle him constantly getting himself into trouble, I don't even know how to get him to take bath!" Obi-Wan screamed but those screams soon became crys and he fell to his knees, "I can't- I can't even-" He shook his head, holding himself as he tried to figure out how he was failing.
The eyes of the council saw through Obi-Wan everytime he stood in front of them, he knew it was only a matter of time until he no longer could hold it in. This was not the first time he'd broken down in front of them, he was so incapable of holding it all in. He hated that about himself. "I'm sorry." His whispered after he stopped crying, for five minutes, he had cried and he hadn't stopped. All he did was cry, for that's all he could do. "I'm sorry." He whispered again, shaking his head, afraid to look up.
"Training a padawan is hard Obi-Wan, but not impossible" Master Mundi spoke suddenly, "You are training a Jedi while raising a child, if you need help, it does not mean you have failed, it simply means you need help."
Obi-Wan ran his hand through his hair as he let out a sigh, then wiping his eyes. He let out a heavy breath as he scanned the room with watery eyes, "I... I've been gone too long, I need to go back to Anakin, i can't leave him alone for long unless I tell him, he needs to know I'll be back, he'll, he'll freak out unless he knows when I'll be back of else he'll lose sleep waiting-" Obi-Wan muttered as he got up, shaking his head and wiping his eyes as he turned to leave.
Yoda looked to his fellow Jedi, concern filling as they knew it was best to let Obi-Wan simply leave. Leave he did. "Obi-Wan!" Anakin ran towards his master and gave him a hug. "I'm sorry if I got you in trouble, I didn't mean to, I don't know what I did-" Anakin cried. Obi-Wan shook his head, shushing Anakin as he picked him up.
"You didn't do anything wrong Anakin, you did great." Obi-Wan spoke softly, wiping Anakin's tears away. Anakin frowned, sensing the sorrow in his master. He wanted to keep asking, noticing the puffiness and redness of his master's face. But perhaps he'd said enough. Instead, he laid his head down on Obi-Wan's shoulder as they headed down the hall.
Anakin tugged tightly on his master's robes, wanting to say something, wanting to mention that fact he'd heard all his master had screamed, that he heard all his master's crys. That he'd caused. He wanted to be a good padawan, he wanted to be a Jedi. He wanted to do good, to go back and free all the slaves, to free his mother, he wanted to do so much good. But he didn't know how. Anakin looked up, "Master?"
"Anakin?" Obi-Wan stopped, looking down, Anakin scanned his master, trying so hard to think of what he could say to make it all okay, to promise Obi-Wan he'd never make him cry again, to be better, but all he could say was,
"We're gonna be okay."
