I pray that if I'm ever in a relationship, it must be with a man who dances.

I'm not looking for a professional. I will take one who can't find the rhythm just as long as we are on the dance floor.

So many of my major family functions devolve into dance circles of women and step songs because none of their husband's and boyfriends dance with them. I spent enough time being the girl nobody asked to dance to end up with a man who won't even two-step. Hell, we can just sway singing in each other's faces.

A girl can only Turbo Time so many times, and I don't have the capacity to learn a new one.

It didn't used to be like this. The men who danced have gotten older. However, the problem is twofold. Most of the men and women just want to drink and smoke. Imagine spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on a hall and a DJ just for your guests to spend the event in the parking lot smoking weed and drinking.

Men take Mary J. Blige's advice and get your ass on the dance floor!

Ya know what, it's not even just a wedding thing. It's a club thing, too. They don't have dance floors anymore they have sections because y'all have fallen for the scam of bottle service. Guess what guys the bottle girl didn't want to fuck you she wants you to empty your wallet. How you expect to meet people in your velvet rope cubical?

Chapter 10: I Wanna Sweep You Off Your Feet Tonight

A twanging guitar and dusty drum picked up through the air and Leo’s eyes widened, grin splitting across his face and deepening his smile lines. He set his glass down and took Yuichi’s hand without a moment’s hesitation, and the rabbit felt his heart thudding against his poor ribs as the red eared slider pulled him out to the dance floor.

“Out in the country, past the city limit sign-“

Yuichi’s ears swiveled under his hat as the clamor of ranchers and farmers rose beneath an accented voice from the speakers.

“Well there's a honky tonk, near the county line~”

The bodies around him fell into a neat line, all facing the same direction, laughing at each other’s movements. Yuichi hadn’t realized Leo had released his hand and was now standing next to him, beaming at the other yokai. His hand still tingled where his barely-toughened skin had met Leo’s scarred and calloused.

“The joint starts jumpin' every night when the sun goes down~”

Yuichi glanced blankly around at the other people as they suddenly kicked out their feet in a pattern. Completely lost, he looked up at Leo, who was doing the same, except his wide eyes were on Yuichi. The rabbit blinked a couple times, uncertainly starting to move his feet just as the others around him turned on their heels.

“You’re shittin’ me,”

Leo’s voice rose above the music and noise. Yuichi glanced over his shoulder to see an expression of shock and disbelief on the other man, and he felt his face get hot with embarrassment.

“You don’t know how’ta boot scoot??”

The slider laughed and paused his movement, stepping closer to Yuichi again. The man was floundering.

“Uhm. Not… exactly?”

“Well, it’s just a line dance,”

Leo replied, humor shining in his eyes. At his blank look in response, the man’s jaw dropped incredulously.

“You ain’t never done a line dance??”

Yuichi rubbed the back of his neck with a sheepish smile.

“Uh, well—“

“Get your ass over here, cowboy.”

A strong hand pulled him closer, almost pressing into the side of Leo’s body. As the people and yokai around them turned back to face the original direction, Leo demonstrated the steps, starting by tapping his right heel out against the floor.

“A’right, first it’s right-right—“

He pulled his foot back and repeated with his other.

“Left-left—“

Yuichi struggled to follow along, and Leo simply put a hand up.

“Just watch for now, okay?”

The patience in his voice made Yuichi’s heart melt. He wasn’t sure what he’d done to earn this kind of sweetness.

“Right-left-right. A’right, you try.”

Leo gave him an encouraging smile, and Yuichi scrambled to remember the steps.

Right-right, left-left, left—no, right-left-right.

Following along, he looked up at Leo for approval. The man looked thrilled.

“There ya go! A’right, now you’re gonna turn—“

He kicked his right heel up and shifted to face Yuichi. The rabbit did the same, turning to face away from Leo, earning a proud laugh before he continued.

“Cross your step three times, then clap—“

Yuichi couldn’t help a smile as Leo smacked his hand against his left thigh in place of a clap. His right shoulder still moved as if he were going to pat his other thigh as well, but no prosthetic was present to complete the movement.

“And then same thing the other way.”

The two stepped side to side, repeating the movement Leo had just taught; crossing their ankles behind them, Yuichi wobbling a little as the fast pace briefly overwhelmed him. Leo moved so effortlessly, Yuichi excused his staring with the reasoning that he was just trying to learn the dance. He knew it was more than that, though.

“A’right, now we gonna take two steps forward.”

Leo held his left arm up, miming tossing a lasso as he dragged his feet forward, hips rocking as he did so. He glanced back at Yuichi, ever-present smile focused on him. The rabbit grinned back, face hot. Leo then scooted, kind of hop-stepping backwards in four steps.

“You ready?”

Without answering, Yuichi moved forward with slow steps, holding one hand on his hip while the other swung an imaginary lasso above his head. Leo easily caught up with another grin, and Yuichi’s eyes briefly flickered back down to the slider’s hips, because come on.

It’s sexy when he moves like that.

Leo pushed Yuichi’s white hat off his head and ruffled his hair with a huge smile.

“There ya go! Then you just repeat the kicks from before, an’ it all starts over again.”

They’d finished at the perfect time, as the chorus kicked in.

“Yeahhh, heel-toe, do-si-do, c’mon baby, let’s go! Boot scoot~”

Leo and Yuichi fell into perfect sync with the dancers around them, Yuichi more than once stumbling or forgetting the steps, but always falling back to Leo to guide him back into place. His own expression mirrored Leo’s—eyes shining, cheeks a little rosy, smile so wide it hurt his face.

But in the heat of the moment, he couldn’t bring himself to care.

Dance to the Music

Sly and the Family Stone have been telling us that for decades. Why'd y'all stop listening?

Someone pointed out that a lot of these new choreographers and tiktok dancers only dance to the lyrics, and now I can't unsee it, and it annoys me to no avail because why are you not dancing to the beat?!?!

I bet if you put an instrumental on, they'd spasm lost with no lyrics to guide them.

They're all scrambling to be the chosen line dance for Beyoncé's Texas Hold Em, and they are all failing because they're only dancing to her words. I don't know if you know this, but the way a singer sings is different throughout the whole song, so there is no way to repeat the steps for the whole song. Which is the point of a line dance!

You do know what is consistent throughout the runtime of a song? The beat dammit. It's pretty much the same beginning to end.

In conclusion dance to the mother fucking beat!!!

I say I didn't notice it until it was pointed out, but that's not true. I did notice I just couldn't put my finger on why I don't like certain dances and dancers from the last seven or so years. A part of it is that nothing is smooth anymore. Most are doing this jerky, pop and lock, robot, tick, tutting, krumping, and I hate it. They do that shit to r&b. Like, what? Make it make sense. No one matches the vibe of the song. Why are you krumping to 1+1 Rebecca?!
