"We flatter our men with our pain. We bow before them. We make ourselves dolls for their amusement. We lose our dignity in corsets and high shoes and gossip and the slavery of marriage. And our reward for this service? The back of the hand, the face turned to the pillow, the bloody, aching cunt as you force us onto your beds to take your fat, heaving bodies!"

Poor Things 🤝 Penny Dreadful
Bella Baxter and Lily Frankenstein
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bella from the Poor Things book asserts that her husband fantasized her life story based on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, so here we see quite a few similarities between her and a version of the monster's bride
fast learners; everyone just thinks they're dumb because apparently there's a belief that when you're resurrected you're supposed to be a clean slate
gaslit and gatekept, but still girlbossed
everybody in their milieux hates when they take full agency of the fact that they can be fierce and sexy and unhinged
forging their path from dying of grief to living unbound to it
both of them lost a child: one to their mother's death before they were born and the other to their mother being barred from coming home when she wanted to keep them warm
both of them don't necessarily hate men for starters and consider recommitting to a traditional relationship with a man but men really are like that, so ehh here we are
women's rights means understanding women's wrongs
in essence both of them, being white women living in Victorian England with extra add-ons, may stand for a feminism that hasn't discovered intersectionality just yet — a feminism raw and pale and inapplicable to more than just their own
all this being said, I think they could be friends

You know, I've been thinking and Lily's feminist revolutionary arc would have been a lot more interesting if instead of having Dorian as a partner she had chosen Caliban.
Since the beginning of the series Brona considers Dorian to be unreliable and as Lily she has the memories of her mortal life so the reason why she thinks it's a good idea to trust Dorian for something as important as the revolution she wanted to start never really convinced me. Sure Dorian's features were tempting and he's an immortal being like her, but everything he does is for the purpose of entertainment (a trait he doesn't hide, by the way) and he's just not sentimental enough for Lily to manipulate him to follow her even against his will. Their union was doomed to betrayal the moment Lily decided to involve herself in "mortal matters".
My point is that Caliban is sentimental enough to be manipulated and vindictive enough to be convinced of purposeful murder. He doesn't own Dorian's fine house, but with the right encouragement he would walk with Lily through the dark streets of London recruiting whores, abandoned souls like both, for a just cause, the oppressed rebelling against the oppressors. She doesn't have to love him, in a way I don't even think Lily loved Dorian at some point, but he would have been a better partner for her purposes if she wanted a sidekick so bad.
Of course, part of the appeal of her speech came from the good life she offered to these whores while delivering her speeches, but Lily has a way with words and is so true to her speech that I doubt she wouldn't manage to convince those women to her cause. Maybe she had a little more trouble convincing them, maybe she didn't get as many allies so quickly, but she would fight for it and get whatever help she wanted with it. With the right words Caliban could gladly follow Lily to hell and she is very good with words. They really would have been together what the Victor in the book so feared they would be.
(Of course, for this to work I would cut the entire subplot of Caliban remembering his mortal life, because honestly I thought it was just to fill a space, and make Justine the "daughter" he wanted to complete this completely dysfunctional family and with that cut whatever sex thing with the girl please, either you treat the girl like a daughter or a lover otherwise you're doing the same thing your creator did to you for God's sake!!!)
